    Mist enveloped him, and everything went black. Cricket stood in front of Omen, next to Tam. "Now leave this place, and do not return until you are ready." This blade crumbled into dust moments after contact, and Moni stepped back out of range. She glanced down at the dagger in her hand. Nameless could make this thing change forms... This would be a lot easier with a sword.

    "Not in the sense that you mean." Omen's voice softened somewhat. "I create trials by drawing you partway into the World of Dreams. You could say that this is merely a nightmare." He took a step towards Cricket. "Now, take my hand." Moni spun out of the way, for once grateful that Nameless had instilled her with fighting skills. She slashed the ground beneath her with Endings, causing cracks to form and destabilizing the ground beneath Atreides's feet, then moved in again to strike at Atreides's blade.

    The fog around Cricket coalesced, pulling together in a rush of wind to form Omen. "No." He said with barely restrained fury. "You have failed. I will not allow one such as you to see the Dreamsmith." He extended an arm made from mist. "Take my hand and return to your world, then begone! You will not meet the Dreamsmith." Moni danced back, managing to avoid the god's sword by a hair's breadth. She ducked back towards him, swinging Endings again, this time aiming not for Atreides, but for his sword.

    "What part of 'he must face this trial alone' did you not understand? How is he alone if you communicate, giving him critical information?" "Then I will return of course." The priest snapped his book shut. "And I will do my best to secure their happy ending. Now, if you will excuse me, I have several declarations of love to catch up on. Farewell!" He vanished.

    The priest stared at her in confusion. "Why would they do that? They have professed their love for one another. At this point, their relationship will either end in utter tragedy or," He raised his book. "They will get their Happily Ever After."

    The priest shook his head, and tapped his book. "The horrors of further drama, the dangers of tragedy and death that are common to all romantic relationships. With this Plotblade, I could spare them from the worst of it if only they would agree to be married."

    "But you must!" The priest was unsettled now. "The protection that I can give following a profession of love is fleeting, no matter how heartfelt. If you are married, that protection will last indefinitely, saving you from the worst of the Thread's horrors." The priest glared at them. "Fine! If you are adamant, then leave. But don't say I didn't warn you." He turned his back and walked away pointedly. In front of Tam, Omen had stilled. The mist that made up his form was entirely motionless. "What." He asked with a voice like thunder. "Have you DONE?!" Dark mist began to rise up from the floor. "You interfere in my trial? You cheat?" Omen's form distorted wildly, swelling in size until he towered over Tam. "You insult me and everything I stand for Narrator. You should have known better than to interfere in this matter! I told you that he must face his trial alone!" Omen's voice again rumbled from all sides. "You have won nothing. You have failed this trial. You were too wrapped up in battle to see that who you thought was an enemy was actually a friend, and slew her! If you had learned from this I might have allowed you to pass anyways, but Tam then allowed you to cheat by communicating with her, thereby destroying any lesson you might have learned!" The forest around Cricket shook with the force of Omen's anger. "I will learn from this mistake. I will not allow connections to the outside world next time. For now, you have failed. I will not allow you to see the Dreamsmith." Moni cursed, dropping the useless shield and holding Endings with both hands. "One, perhaps." She charged towards Atreides, swinging the dagger towards his sword arm.

    "Young man, you should know that when you are emotionally drained it is the perfect time to get married. They tend to overfill one with emotions, you see, so when you are drained to begin, they spill out less."

    "But-but that's precisely why you should get married!" The priest's disdainful expression implied that this should have been obvious. "Now that you've professed your love for one another, the forces of the thread will unite in an attempt to rip you apart! So you must marry now, before it is too late. Now, I'll begin the ceremony." He flipped open his book and cleared his throat. "Hm, how formal do you wish the ceremony to be?" Tam's accusing gaze bored into Cricket's skull. Then her head fell back down, eyes going glassy and lifeless. Moni motioned for Perseus to stay back. "I suppose I'll soon join them, won't I?" She raised the dagger of Endings and her shield in a defensive posture.

    The priest grabs the note and reads it in a flash, then tosses it into his pocket. "Not getting MARRIED?!" The priest looked between Shoe and Beosta with an utterly aghast expression on his face. "Why? Do you relish in further tragedy and pain?" "I knew I heard you thinking something!" The priest glared at Shoe. "How dare you hug this young woman while not even intending to marry her! Disgraceful! Most disgraceful in-deed!" The priest nodded sharply. "Yes, it is quite obviously them, I believe." The figure coughed up blood, picking their head up off the ground just enough for the hood of the cloak to fall, revealing Tam's face. In turn, Moni drew Endings. "Come on then. Show me why your Blade is so feared."

    The book-holder straightened his long robes perfunctorily. "I am Galbus, a priest and professional ship finalizer. I have successfully brought thirteen ships to dock-so to speak-personally, and have assisted in the docking of dozens more." The priest's head swiveled towards Shoe. "What was that? Did I hear you thinking something?"

    The book-holder harrumphed loudly. "I have been sent here to perform a marriage ceremony, and I am not one to abandon such a duty. So if you would be so kind as to point me in the direction of the two people who have professed love for one another, I will happily be on my way to fulfill my responsibilities."

    The book-holder cleared his throat rather aggressively. "I suppose you are busy at the moment. By all means, ignore me."

    A man holding a large book appeared, looking confused. "Um, hello?"

    "But the adventurers who died would not be dead. Perhaps others would have died, perhaps they would have died. but that doesn't mean that I am not responsible for those deaths."

    The last figure Cricket had stabbed, the one who'd saved him-perhaps inadvertently-from a knife in the back, coughed, shifting slightly. Moni ducked the spear of light, reaching into her pack and pulling out a shield. "Not even worth using your sword on am I? Maybe you think that just because I don't kill people, I'll let you kill me?" "I... suppose I did keep the Plotblades from notice. But if I had told a few others, like my old student the Valiant One, then I could have prevented all the suffering that has since taken place. Adventurers are dead because of me and my actions."

    Omen's voice seemed to come from everywhere at once. "You have killed enough already. Look, and see what you have done." Moni walked towards him, right hand gripping Ending's hilt. "A storm? Really? That's the punishment for defying you? I guess that makes sense. Cowards like you never do want to fight people personally." The Great Wizard shook his head. "Do I look okay? I have betrayed everyone I cared for for nothing! How could I be okay?"

    The Wizard laughed wryly. "Of course I'm more tired. I've fought those who were my closest friends, been knocked unconscious, chained, and had my powers almost entirely sealed away. You could say that I've had a long day." The sword swished by Cricket, and there was a clang of metal as it deflected the dagger thrown by the first hunter Cricket had stabbed. An instant later, the figure ran into Cricket's knife, blade sinking deep into their heart. They collapsed backwards to the ground, cloak billowing around them. Moni's grip tightened on Endings. "Just try and make me pay. I don't care what you've done, you're not getting this Blade."

    The man fell to the ground dead, eyes staring sightlessly. For a moment, all was still in the foggy forest. Then Cricket saw movement out of the corner of his eye. A form rushing towards him from behind with a sword raised, almost within striking range. Moni's face twisted in anger. "I am not going to give the Plotblade of Endings to a monster like you. If you're not going to help us, then leave. I'm not scared by your threats. As terrible as it sounds like you are, I've faced far worse than you and lived to tell the tale." The Wizard nodded wearily. "Those aren't my rabbits- well, they are technically rabbits, but that's not all they are. Perhaps... perhaps I can ask for a forestallment of my judgement until I have them properly contained again?" He glanced at Selppaenip. @Ookla the Bacon

    The man screamed as he fell, blood staining the forest floor. The last hunter hesitated, eyes fearful as he backed away from Cricket. Moni laughed. "I'm no Narrator. I'm not even a Narrator's Avatar anymore, since Nameless gave up his power and died." Her hand dropped to Endings at her waist. "And I'm not going to give you this Plotblade." "That is my plan, yes." The Great Wizard continued frowning at Platypus. "What did you witness? I don't believe I've ever met you." "He is no longer afraid." The mist that made up Omen seemed to darken slightly. "And so he lashes out in anger."

    The humming cut off. "I must apologize Narrator, but I did not quite catch that. I grow distracted at times." Omen swirled mistily.

    "Who and who?" The Wizard's frown deepened. "What are you here for? They said you were a witness, yes?" The hunters reacted slowly, obviously horrified by what Cricket had done to their ally. One managed to swing a dagger at his head. Outside of the trial, Omen had started humming an eerie tune to himself. @Ookla the Inconclusive Moni narrowed her eyes at him. "Are you one of the gods who sent his people to this... Ragnorok place?"

    The Great Wizard glanced at him and frowned. "There is great darkness within your soul."

    "I don't know!" Subversion sat up, throwing her hands in the air. "I just wish it was all real! I wish that things like people's happiness actually mattered outside of how they affect the story!" She fell back against her seat, arms flopping down by her sides, dangling off the edge of her therapy chair. "I wish," she said in a small voice. "That I was real. Because..." She paused, thinking deep, introspective thoughts. "Because he thinks I'm real, maybe. I wish everything could be real like he thinks it is." "All right." The adventurer fiddled with a device, activating Platypus's invitation to teleport him to the cell. @Ookla the Arbiter

    Subversion turned to glare at Bacon. "You're not being very helpful. Don't you have some sage advice that will change my entire outlook on life?" The Great Wizard made a halfhearted attempt at an upside-down shrug. Before he could make any other response, the door to the dark room opened, light pouring in. "Er, lawyer? A witness wants to talk to you. And to the Great Wizard. Is that all right?"
