  1. I'm a terrible author. Most of my characters barely have any trauma.
  2. The Valiant One abruptly noticed Tam's expression. "Oh, I'm sorry." He quickly withdrew from the room.
  3. "I'll take your word for it then. Oh, were you one of the Narrators that was created by an Author that way, or did you become one later?" "I thought of that possibility." Balitan pressed another button, and the scanner turned back onto him. "However, I found that by adjusting the scanner's sensitivity, I can see the Narrative energy that makes up my soul. But even with the scanner set to the maximum possible sensitivity, such that it detects the ambient Narrative energy of this area, the sphere reads as blank." "Oh, wow." Subversion sat back down. "Is this an act of Fate? Or something Onyx did with Lore? Nothing else could affect reality so fundamentally, right? Unless there's some really dangerous threat. I wonder..." She shook herself. "Well, it... doesn't really matter. I'm sure things will clear up in time." "Oh, good!" The Dreamsmith smiled. "I apologize for waiting so long to visit you, but Omen said... Ah, later. First, I want to know how you've been! Sent out any questers? Given any sage advice?"
  4. "Yes, the structure is different. But the fundamental material they're made from might show some similarities." Balitan frowned as the scan concluded. "No, you're correct. There's no overlap." He sighed. "That leaves the impossible. That sphere is energy made without energy."
  5. I think Ishar was referring to Szeth throwing away his chance at becoming a Herald. the fifth ideal granting immortality feels just completely out of the blue, and Syl or one of the other spren probably would've mentioned it.
  6. "Yes, let's." Balitan pointed the remote, and a robot arm grabbed the Nullite and placed it into a scanner. He walked over to a computer, observing carefully the series of words and numbers running across the screen. "The scanners can detect the Ordered Darkness." He noted. "They're forming the structural model now." A holographic duplicate of the Nullite appeared. "Structural model complete." Balitan pressed more buttons on the remote, and a holographic duplicate of the Dream Crystal appeared next to it. "I'll begin the cross-reference analysis now." He pressed another button and the two holograms overlapped, data running across the computer screen. "This might take a bit."
  7. “Oh, okay!” The Valiant One nodded. “Which other Narrator should I speak to? Do you know any who make characters?”
  8. "I mean, 'Pancake' isn't that awful of a name, but I would've hated to know that Nameless was turning over in his grave on account of me taking up a different title." The Valiant One shrugged. "If you don't mind me asking, how do Narrators decide who makes characters?" "I don't think we're meaning quite the same thing here." Balitan tapped the sphere. "This is Prismite. My tests confirm it. It is identical in substance to the Dream crystal, although it seems to be much more organized somehow. However, it is... dead. Entirely devoid of power and energy. I suppose 'inactive' is a poor term. It is not that this sphere is made from Prismite organized in such a way that its energy is entirely contained within itself, or simply very stable. No, it simply has no energy." He pounded a fist on the table, shaking the sphere in the indentation that had formed to hold it. "But that's impossible! Because Prismite is energy. It's like finding hydrogen without mass, or a laser without light. Prismite without Chaotic Light energy simply cannot exist!" Balitan took a breath, calming himself. "That's why I want Nullite, or any of the other fundamental metals. While all of my tests indicate that this is Prismite, there are still a couple other possibilities. It could be that all the fundamental metals have the same basic structure, and I've merely been unable to detect the energy within this sphere because all of my detection equipment is tuned to Prismite. That's unlikely, considering all the measurements I've done. But it's possible. The other possibility, slightly different, is that all the fundamental metals are really just the powers infused onto some kind of fundamental energy sponge, a hitherto-undiscovered material that this sphere is made from. If that's true, I should be able to cross-reference scans of the Nullite and the Prismite to determine which parts of them are this metal, and which parts are of the respective fundamental essences." He took another deep breath. "If neither of those are true... then we're back to facing an impossibility. Unless you have another explanation?"
  9. "You're sure?" The Valiant One perked up. "That's excellent news. The Dreamsmith just laughed when I asked him so I thought that maybe... well, I'm glad. Good to know that I don't have to worry about upsetting any Narrators."
  10. "As near as I can tell, it is Prismite." Balitan tapped a few buttons on his controller, moving the Dream Crystal over next to the sphere. "They have completely identical structure, aside from this sphere being orders of magnitude more dense than the crystal." The ever-shifting light of the crystal reflected dully off of the lifeless sphere. "But as you can see, it is... inactivated." "Indeed. Barely anyone bothers with us once we are defeated, even if that defeat is not final." "I was just curious. You know. And..." The Valiant One hesitated. "I suppose I wonder about it because if Narrators pick names in some particularly special way, mine might get offended if I started going by a different one."
  11. The Valiant One looked confused. "Oh, I'm sorry. I meant no offense; it's just that I thought all Narrators made characters. I mean, most people are made by Narrators, aren't they?" He frowned. "Is it really difficult to make characters? Do you... have a system, or something? Are only the best Narrators allowed to create characters? If so, I apologize for bringing up a sore point."
  12. Balitan looked at Rebus blankly. "Balancium? You mean an alloy of the fundamental substances? It's possible to make that?" Malevolence tilted his head to the side. "I see. Picking the correct goal will be difficult. I would not recommend evil. Only great evil is remembered, and once you are defeated you will quickly be forgotten." He grinned. "Besides, once I have conquered, I will be the only evil one whose memory remains. Perhaps you should set a goal of opposing me. achieving even a modicum of success before your inevitable demise would certainly be a feat worth remembering." "For all the characters you make." He explained. "How do you come up with names for them?"
  13. "How do you come up with all the names?" Shrugging uncomfortably, the Valiant One continued. "I'm certain I'd run out of them at some point."
  14. "I would imagine so. Can I ask you a question? There's something I've always wanted to ask a Narrator."
  15. "Never really met a Narrator before. What's it like?" The Valiant One asked curiously. "It is an impossibility." Balitan said in an awed voice. "Only now that it is confirmed do I realize how ridiculous my original theory was." "How is that difficult? Choosing your goals is the easiest part of planning."
  16. "Do you have anything to add to our conversation?" Asked Malevolence. "I think he will escape execution, but I doubt he will entirely escape consequences." The Valiant One cocked his head. "No. You're a Narrator?" gotcha. "Nullite tattoos? You're referring to the practices of the dwellers under that mountain? I wondered where you'd get the Nullite from." Balitan hesitated, then pulled an object out of his pocket. "There is a somewhat similar story behind my own interest in the fundamental metals." A table formed from the floor between Balitan and Rebus and he placed the object, a dull grey sphere made of metal, on it. "This appeared in my lab one day with no explanation. I have no idea where it came from, and until today, only guesses as to what it actually was." "Good planning is the mark of a true evil mastermind. If you do not know how you are going to achieve your goals, they will always evade your grasp."
  17. "That's the danger of dragging things out so long. We should've finished with this business ages ago." I suppose since they're all unconscious, we could cut to wherever they're being taken?
  18. It was hard to tell whether this was effective or not, but regardless, the group was now effectively captured.
  19. Faunus was doing her vacant-eyed stare thing again. The Shade could attempt to capture her, although any action taken against her would result in a quantum-like state of both success and failure until her Author returned to decide her reaction. Either way, she'd probably follow her captured friends.
  20. Balitan's eyes tightened. "An interesting goal. What led you to it? Did you observe some odd forms of the fundamental powers?" "Perhaps you are right." Malevolence shrugged. "Perhaps. We shall see which of us is happier, in the end." "Betrayed us. Worked in secret to find the dread Plotblades." The Valiant One hesitated. "Perhaps to use for himself, but perhaps to protect the Thread from them. After reading through the evidence... it seems his intentions may have been pure."
  21. "And do what? Sit around? Give evidence against the Wizard that I've already given a dozen times in writing, about events that a dozen other adventurers can testify better than I?" He sighed. "Besides. The Wizard... he was the one who trained me. Seeing him on trial, knowing what he's done... it hurts." "I do not seek to rule 'the world'. I wish to rule the Thread. If that means I must rule over infinity, then so be it. I will accomplish this task." His violet eyes glimmered with malice, and a hint of amusement as well. "I will admit, I also am curious about what the Thread will look like once I have accomplished my goals. Such a monumental task will doubtless change me in unpredictable ways, and my current idea of how things should be done will look quite naive to my future self, I am sure."
  22. "Yeah." The Valiant One shrugged. "Not sure what the reaction will be once they notice I'm gone. I might get thrown off the council."
  23. "Yeah. One of the witnesses' Author became inactive just after he was called up. I think they were starting a motion to have him excluded when I left."
  24. The Valiant One shrugged. "Adventuring. The trial's been stalled, and I doubt my testimony will make a difference. So I decided to go out and do stuff where I can make a difference."
  25. "Nice to meet you both." The Valiant One offered a handshake to them. Malevolence smiled at Rebus, but hatred behind his eyes. "I will discover the deep secrets of evil. I will rule this thread, and reshape it into my image. I will follow my own desires, not those imposed on me by others."
