  1. I don't know. Brandon says that most of the time it preserves mass: But unless I'm mistaken we don't know what happens when it doesn't. The only example we have of fabrial Soulcasters being used to create something like the barracks, there were five of them working together and they took a while to make it. And that was just a windbreak, not something complex like a barracks. The Mistborn can crush them against the wall with steel, forcing them to dismiss their blade.
  2. Because otherwise it would kill people, and Brandon doesn't want that to happen. And we don't see anyone come anywhere near to making one. The closest we see anyone come to that is Jasnah soulcasting steps. It was probably thicker and heavier than anything a Lightweaver could quickly make. A normal steelpush? How do you keep going? You'd have to let the coin pass through the shield in order to do that. I'm not saying the Mistborn would use that in battle, I'm saying that they could make ludicrous amounts of money by selling them.
  3. Nameless glanced behind them, noticing that the light of the doorway they'd entered through had disappeared. "Huh. Maybe they can move stuff around." He looked ahead, noticing that the Finn that were supposed to be leading them had disappeared. "Oh. That's... not great."
  4. Where else would it go? Mass cannot be created or destroyed, only change forms. So it must've turned into smoke, turned into energy, or turned into Investiture. Still, a lot of them can't. We do not see fabrial soulcasters creating complex shapes. We know that they created the barracks, but they probably made them in sections, using multiple Soulcasters in tandem. She was trapped deep underground, not in a hallway. And what exactly is the Radiant going to do when their Shardshield gets duraluminum pushed. The Mistborn can throw a couple coins onto both the shield and the wall behind them, then duraluminum push, or even just normal push. agreed. I agree. Still, chromium will drain any amount of Stormlight very quickly, bronze will negate illusions, and Soulcasting huge chunks of stone will use quite a lot of Stormlight. The reasoning that we were given as to why there are no medallions that give all the powers is conflicting identity. Assuming allomancy medallions can be made, a Mistborn could make medallions that give all 16 powers, as their identity would not conflict with itself.
  5. "Oh. That way of spelling potatoes just got a lot less awesome." Meanwhile, Subversion was attempting to summon the shade of @Thaidakar the Ghostblood.
  6. I've applied to a couple schools in my area, but I'm going to a community college right now.
  7. Secretspren also can't detect stormlight that is only being held, or Shardblades being summoned. Converted into investiture, most likely. Jasnah can't make good food. She can make food that's edible. And even after a year of training, the Lightweavers can still only make solid chunks of food. Mistborn aren't likely to have money troubles. With their powers, they'll be in insanely high demand, if only for their ability to make Mistborn metalminds. And this isn't really "extra". If I was a Mistborn, I'd try to keep enough of all my useful metals on me for an extended fight. You don't have to keep track of all of them. If there's a whole ton of shadows that are moving all around you and suddenly they all stop moving, reacting is not hard. A Lightweaver can't make complex shapes quickly, or at a distance. We don't even see Jasnah doing that. And Duraluminum steelpushing would break through the stone.
  8. You know, college essays haven't been that bad to me yet.
  9. Evidence? They can barely consistently soulcast basic food. And Jasnah is better than her at everything. Haven't read it in a while, so maybe. Even if electrum burns as fast as Atium, it'll be easy enough to get enough of it. A pouch of beads or a canteen of metals will contain enough for an extended fight. Electrum generates one future per person, but that future changes because they can see it. Yes you'll need training to react, but all of your shadows will not simply stop moving at once for any reason other than being trapped. Easy enough to react to. Yes, but they're also not ordinary Lightweavers. Most people that were attracted after the deserters were just ordinary people. They are trained to fight using their powers, and to fight other metalborn. Out of all the Mistborn we've seen, only one of them was not a capable fighter. On the other hand, many Lightweavers have basically no real combat experience. He claimed that the arguments you were making were pointless. He did not insult your person. It may have been offensive to you, but it was not, by definition, a personal attack. Mistborn has an instant win button in chromium, and they're stronger and faster than the Radiant. @Primeival Chaos I think that bronze would detect illusions. It can detect Shardblades being summoned: And stormlight that's been breathed in: And in general bronze is one of the best methods of detecting investiture:
  10. Harmony could have turned Spook into a Kandra if he wanted. Radiants can only heal older wounds if they don't perceive the wounds as part of themselves. Divine breath is a possible exception, but it is also far beyond any amount of Stormlight. Beyond that, your only evidence for Stormlight cost being perception based, at least so far as I can tell, is that it would explain how stormlight consumption could be based on volume, and your evidence for stormlight consumption being based on volume is... what, exactly? Yeah, but Jasnah's far beyond them. And Kaza was a savant. Vin vs every Inquisitor? And also them not noting electrum as burning quickly? Atium still has to "check" the future of everything around you, even if it won't move. Electrum only has to do it for you. So every time the Mistborn gets in close they'd soulcast? they'll run out of Stormlight very quickly, if they use it that often. With something like hitting a tennis ball it'd be difficult, but with an aoe attack like the Radiant would have, every single shadow, or almost all of them, will freeze in place until the Mistborn realizes that they need to dodge. No lengthy training required. Lightweavers are selected against being from military backgrounds, then thrown into a sort-of military group, where they are trained to be spies first and fighters second. Mistborn are not selected for at all genetically or personality-wise, but are selected to be fighters because of their powers. That wasn't a personal attack.
  11. Source? And she is vastly more skilled than them. Even the most skilled soulcaster we've seen, Kaza, couldn't come close to replicating her feats. You see why I don't think this argument is relevant? What? No, it shows one future. That future just changes constantly. Atium doesn't start burning faster when someone else burns Atium. If a Radiant can't summon their Shardblade while being leeched, what makes you think they'd be able to use surges? Training isn't all that necessary, just learn to dodge if all your shadows start getting frozen. You can escape in time, given the radius we've seen, and electrum is never mentioned as burning fast. even if it does burn fast, carrying enough on you to last for, say, 30 minutes won't be hard. Shardbearers, but yeah. They spar with each other and train under Radiant. We've never seen nor heard of them doing anything else. On average, more Lightweavers will not be soldiers because they attract people who are not combat-minded. Mistborn, by virtue of having their powers, will be influenced towards being utilized for combat purposes.
  12. It does not take more stormlight, it merely becomes impossible. She is above every Soulcaster we've seen, and is of the Fourth ideal. If she wasn't above the Third ideal average, Jasnah would have to be below average in skill. I think it is possible that they do not on average have the ability to soulcast as we see Jasnah soulcast. You're not changing my mind without evidence. Elend and Vin used it against every Inquisitor that they fought. And also, in counterpoint to your theory that electrum burns quickly because it does the same thing as Atium but only for you, Atium shows the future of vastly more, compared to electrum that only has to show your own future. The Lightweaver can have as much stormlight as they want. A Mistborn can leech it all away just fine. That's not what I was referring to. Soulcasting as a weapon is countered by electrum. No they don't. They train to fight regular people, as we saw in RoW. Mistborn in modern times will either be soldiers specifically chosen to be granted Lerasium or medallions, or extremely rare and in-demand for their unmatchable power. They will be fighters, especially with a cold war on the horizon.
  13. What evidence do you have for Perception working that way? Are there any cases where Perception alone made something harder? This isn't a court of law. I am making a claim that Jasnah is above average, and I have given evidence that I believe to be sufficient to back up that claim. (She's Fourth ideal, considered a perfect Elsecaller by her spren, has shown better Soulcasting feats than any other Soulcaster we've seen). You are making the claim that my claim is wrong. Please provide evidence. So you make the opposite conclusion instead? Really? So they couldn't, say, swallow a few dozen beads of it? Elend and Vin never had a problem with running out of it. You've shown no evidence that it isn't. Mistborn train to be assassins and to fight people. No they're not. Lightweavers train to be spies first, fighters second.
  14. That was after the perpendicularity. Dalinar opened it in an earlier scene, and Renarin was shocked that Jasnah was able to do that until he noticed the perpendicularity himself. Perception doesn't work that way. Just as pushing something with more mass requires more energy regardless of volume, so too would Soulcasting something with more mass. It doesn't matter how hard you think it is. How do you know that she isn't? Developing bad habits doesn't take skill, and this is all the sample size we have. Do you have any evidence that the Lightweaver's average will be dramatically higher than what they are right now? That's still just speculation, but it doesn't matter because a Mistborn will have plenty of electrum on them either way. And with soulcasting off the table, the Lightweaver only really has Stormlight and a Shardblade, and their order doesn't focus on combat. Between pewter, steel/iron, brass/zinc, nicrosil, and a Mistborn's heightened focus towards combat, they won't last long.
  15. I don't read it that way at all, but it doesn't really matter. She soulcasted a human relatively easily, but took a deep breath before soulcasting the two thieves as they were running away. Okay, so you addressed one of my points, partially. The resistance of a human's soul is much more powerful than that of a piece of paper. What about the rest of the examples? A change in the Cognitive/Spiritual explains why you don't need to use a particle accelerator, but it doesn't explain where the extra mass comes from. Or why it would be dependent on volume instead of mass. If we use the modern-day averages, then the fight couldn't happen. So we have to speculate on the average of the orders when they were at their peak, and Jasnah is clearly above that, as I have been arguing for the past however long. Shallan is better at illusions. Vathah is better at illusions. Literally every Lightweaver we've seen is better at illusions. Do you have a source that says they're not? Source for electrum burning so quickly? Even if it does, the amount of Stormlight required to pull off the stone trick is much too high to be spammed, and if Mistborn can have enough Atium for an extended fight, they can easily have more than enough electrum.
  16. "is often" "depending on those beings' emotional, mental, and spiritual states". Notice that she doesn't say humans, and she doesn't say that all stone is that hard. The stone that Stonewards and Willshapers will be using most of the time is stone from the ground, the kind that is hardest to Soulcast. That doesn't mean that some wall that's been up for a few years will be just as hard as stone that has been in place for over a hundred years. Is it? Jasnah did one casually, and the other after preparing herself. And it's even harder for Lightweavers than Elsecallers. Because she can soulcast words into a page, soulcast at a distance, soulcast humans, and combat soulcast. She focuses almost solely on Soulcasting, has had years of practice, and has the perfect intellect and personality for Soulcasting. Why would it be dependent on volume? You do realize that mass not being conserved means that you need to make Stormlight into matter, right? Therefore, the more mass you Soulcast the more Stormlight you use. It just doesn't make sense to have it be dependent on volume. I am not saying that their order is incapable of using Transformation effectively, I am saying that the average of their order is below that of the Elsecallers, and that Jasnah is above the average of the Elsecallers. Therefore we cannot assume that they will be able to pull off her feats with equal ease. Lightweavers get illusions first, and illusions are their 'primary' power. They can Soulcast, but that's not what they focus on or are naturally skilled at, in general. Since we are talking about the average, the general rule is what matters. I think we are getting unfocused. We are arguing about Soulcasting because you claimed it would be an unstoppable technique. I have given reasons that a Mistborn would be able to avoid such an attack, and you have not refuted my reasons. Unless you can, this argument isn't really releveant, because regardless of the outcome attacking the Mistborn by turning the air around you to stone would only result in a massive waste of Stormlight, as you'd have to Soulcast the stone back to air in order to escape.
  17. Unintelligible shrugged, offering Bookwyrm a bag of jafhodalheritas.
  18. No, it says stone can be more difficult, if the modifiers are in its favor. We've seen combat Soulcasting, we just haven't seen anyone but Jasnah use it. I agree, but I am not arguing that Lightweavers are incapable of replicating Jasnah's feats. I am arguing that the average Lightweaver would not have the skill to replicate her feats. I do believe that the skill a Lightweaver would to replicate those feats is higher than Jasnah's, but even if it didn't Jasnah is above the average Lightweaver in skill. Conservation of mass has nothing to do with Stormlight use, except that Stormlight will have to be converted into mass to make up the extra, which is a point against your argument. We also do see that objects with more mass take more Stormlight, as Jasnah repairing the wall of Thaylen city took ungodly amounts of it, while soulcasting people and walls took just about nothing by comparison. So mass is directly proportional to Stormlight used. What? I don't understand. Brandon's reasoning for putting it into the books has nothing to do with its actual existence. In general, Lightweavers learn Lightweaving first, and Soulcasting second. Additionally, Lightweavers generally don't train Soulcasting as much as they do Lightweaving. Therefore, the average Lightweaver will not have the skill in Soulcasting that Jasnah does.
  19. "But is was perfectly cooked! Don't you like ghoughphtheightteeaus?"
  20. Unintelligible named his sword Bslwaodred and blasted the Ghoughphtheightteeau with a bolt of lightning, then handed it to Sequence.
  21. Unintelligible batted it back at Nobody with his sword.
  22. Unintelligible threw a Ghoughphtheightteeau at his head.
  23. "I like it. Ghoughphtheightteeau. Sounds good. A much better name that potato."
  24. It can be harder than living beings, depending on their emotional state and whatnot. I'm guessing that means that at the peak of stone's Soulcasting resistance, it can be more difficult than Soulcasting a living being at the lowest point of its resistance. Walls are not anywhere near that peak. So we won't see more combat Soulcasting until Jasnah, the only person we've seen to be capable of it, becomes more of a main character. Kaladin is dramatically more skilled than any Windrunner. He can do things (like keeping up with Leshwi, holding back a Highstorm) that they simply cannot do. Jasnah is dramatically more skilled than any other Radiant Soulcaster. She can do things (like Soulcasting at a distance, Soulcasting during combat) that no other Radiant Soulcaster can do. Skill in Soulcasting is what allows Jasnah to do what she does He only started doing it after reaching the Third ideal, and he used Windspren for the Highstorm in OB too. The higher the ideal, the more Stormlight a Radiant can handle, the easier it becomes to use their powers. I don't understand how that matters. Could you explain further? Irrelevant to the argument. The hole cannot have been made by Kaza, therefore someone else must have done it. Whether or not the Sleepless did it is just speculation on my part, and has no bearing on the fact that the two holes are completely different. Not on its own, no, but Jasnah is powerful, and dedicated to bettering herself and her powers. She's been practicing with Soulcasting for years. Szeth is more skilled than the average Windrunner. vastly more skilled. Unless you think Skar or Sigzil can take him? I'm not arguing that the Lightweavers focus exclusively on Illumination, but as Kaladin focused on his basic lashings and flight more than his other powers, Lightweavers focus mainly on illusions. Soulcasting is just a secondary power to them, from what we've seen. Jasnah's first developed power: Soulcasting. Shallan's first developed power: Lightweaving. Do you have any evidence against it?
