  1. So my radioactive/electromagnetism glowy theory really only works if stormlight is an element. Molecules (as I understand them) don't decay radioactively. Again, please feel free to correct me. As for elements, it seems like it would fit in group seven or eight. (where the gases are). Maybe there's another row on the periodic table, and that's where stormlight fits in. It appears to be unreactive, which would put it in group eight. However, most scientists agree that elements >118 are too heavy to exist, but there have been attempts to make them. There is also a theory that there is a set of elements around ~140 that are stable enough to exist for a few minutes. They would be very heavy and denser than air, which would make them sink. However, that is with Earth's temperature, pressure, and composition. Did we ever get it confirmed that the body was too porous? Or it could be that gems stabilize it and human bodies allow it to decay naturally. (like an aqueous solution) Gemstones can be soulcast, they just would not be able to hold stormlight.
  2. The stormlight does decay, I think . After a certain point, there is no energy left for surgebindung and the glowing stops at that point. Like a soulcaster, for example. Maybe that makes the compound stable, then the highstorms renergize it? Perhaps all investiture glows as it is related to radiation/the electromagnetic spectrum.
  3. This post is right up my nerdy alley. So there are two things I'm seeing here. One is whether or not stormlight adheres to the traditional model of physics. The other is which state of matter it is. The first one: Aside from being, you know, a magical substance, I don't see anything majorly odd. But that could just be me. If I had to guess, stormlight seems to be a point particle (volume but very very small mass) vaguely along the lines of a photon in that it is a packet of energy. Where it fits on the electromagnetic spectrum? Maybe in the ultraviolet to gamma radiation spectrum. Radiation (sometimes) causes things to glow in the presence of certain elements because of a fabulous thing called Cherenkov Radiation. Basically, the pretty glow occurs when the particles from the radiation move faster than they normally would in a given substance (like water in a reactor). If stormlight is a very high energy particle and therefore moves a wee bit faster through water vapor- boom, pretty glow. But how do you get the colors? Adding more or less energy can make it grow more or less blue. The second one: Stormlight (to me) acts like a gas. It moves to fill a container (ish). It expands and diffuses. It can be cooled down to another state. Perhaps when blades are summoned, they are cold. Some things, like carbon monoxide (dry ice) go directly from solid to gas. This seems to be one of those. As for stormlight in the atmosphere, Brandon said something along the lines of "Roshar has a really high oxygen level, and that's why fire isn't used much." But light isn't a gas. So one of these theories being true would invalidate the other. Anyone with a knowledge greater than what I have scraped off of wikipedia, please chime in.
  4. Leona was almost done with the cake when she heard the screaming and clanging of blades. She summoned Onyx as a chef's knife, then stormed outside. The battle was in full swing. There were voidbringers. So many voidbringers. And Cassie had disappeared. To the Cognitive realm, she supposed. And a voidbringer had followed her. Nobody else had seen or reacted. And Leona was the only other one with access. "SERIOUSLY?" she yelled, gracefully faceplanting into a sea of beads, nearly impaling herself on Onyx. Now was not the time for her ankle to give out. She landed on a platform of beads. Somehow, she'd transformed them into a kitchen table. Cassie was to her left, weaponless. Onyx had reverted to spren form, but Leona had backup weapons. What, after all, was the point of being a baker if not so that one could carry numerous weapons - knives, rolling pins, potato peelers, cheese graters - all the time? She handed Cassie a chef's knife. "You're worth it. You are worth something, no matter how much you argue otherwise. Now let's kick demon butt and get out of here." Grabbing a knife in each hand, she began to fight. @AonEne

  6. 355. Give up on using a regular steel blade because it is 100% likely there is a mythical metal that will cut your sword like a knife through butter.
  7. Leona turned around from where she was rolling fondant flowers to face Cassie. "Yeah, sure!"
  8. Please write this. Bonus points if the fanfic is written by a cosmere character about another character.
  9. Asger walked towards the station. It was way too early for trains - at least for normal people, he supposed. He was far from normal, with the ability to store information in metal. Somewhat like one of those new hard-drive things. But small. What would his life have been like had he not discovered his ability? Had he not... Not what? He couldn't remember. There was probably a reason. He couldn't think of what it was. Was it that coin? Every time he tried to tap it, all he felt was loss, a gaping hole in his heart. It was probably better that he didn't know.
  10. You have Sanderfan parents? LUCKY! I'm jealous. I'm trying to get my dad to read WoT and he took a year to get through EotW.
  11. This is really good writing! There are some issues with sentence length/structure choppiness. As a rule of thumb, you want sentence length to be rolling waves, not sharp mountains. Another thing - entering right into a fantasy world with all the names, terms, and Magik (tm) is great but can be very jarring if you don't explain what those things are or how they work. Infodumping is bad, but so is leaving the poor reader with no clue what's happening. Imagery: This is super important. What are they fighting with? Where are they fighting? What does the opponent look like? What time is it? What's the weather like? Details like this can be used to foreshadow future events or add a dramatic background. Dialogue: It's a sword fight. I know there probably isn't much talking. But internal dialogue and indirect dialogue are just as effective for characterization. We wanna know who the characters are - their personalities, goals, how they tick. Supporting Characters: A lot of them are introduced here - Mother, Father, Dake, Vangil - but we don't learn very much about who they are other than their relationships to Deith.
  12. Realistically? Random peasant No. 3829472. What I would want to be? Elsecaller. Hello, soulcasted cake.
  13. I've had something similar to chouta. Basically, naan bread (think thick pita) wrapped around turkey meatballs and slathered with a Greek yogurt sauce. Not quite gravy, but still really good.
  14. Leona smiled. Ashlyn was doing the food. She was free to start on the cake. more cake? Onyx asked. Yes. More cake. why are you obsessed with cake? Why aren't you? Leona shut out Onyx's protestations and closed her eyes. A three-tiered cake- that was par for the course at any and every wedding. One layer chocolate, one vanilla, and one marbled. Concentrating, she gathered air over the cardboard cake round she'd set on the counter. The air protested. It wanted to be free, to be fluid. She clenched a fist, and it shaped itself into a squat cylinder. Be chocolate. Be cake. Opening her eyes, a large chocolate cake sat on the counter. She repeated the process twice more. By the end of it, her ring was completely drained along with most of the spheres she had in her apron, and a good portion of those in the kitchen. She pulled a tub of buttercream and a plastic container of fondant out. "Onyx, can you be a spatula?" probably. why? "So I can frost this cake." ---- "What about a rolling pin?" that's not even close to being a weapon. "Clearly you've never had one smash your fingers." fine.
  15. "Not really. But if you could narrow down exactly what Jace and Ax want, that'd be super helpful."
  16. Leona thought for a minute. "Maybe. If it's closely related to cake, like bread, I could make it. Anything else though is beyond me. Unless you happen to want a cake meal?"
  17. "One cake that has one side of chocolate and one side vanilla. Easily soulcastable. I'll do decorations by hand."
  18. Okay! "Chocolate's always good. So is vanilla? What about both?" She answered. "It wouldn't be too hard to do. You got any guess as to how many people we are going to have?"
