17th Shard Astronomy Club

That's so cool! Do you mind sharing where you got it from? I've been trying to find a good source online after Amazon's went out of stock. -

Probably you'd start a new topic in the Stormlight Archives forum, unless you're using data from RoW, in which case you'd use the RoW spoiler boards.- 29 replies

Maybe. It gets slow in the middle, and some of the characters really irritated me, but overall it's an excellent series. I'd say start the first book, and if you like it, keep going. Remember, there's no obligation to finish reading a book if you don't like the start.

Aln's expression grew serious. "A plan? Unfortunately, not quite. As for what we have here...I'm beginning to see the shape of it. It's quite a lot." With a deep breath, she began to explain. "I have memories of what appears to be an alternate reality. An reality in which the old myths of the Dark Alley are not myths, but truth. I don't believe that this is a hallucination on my part. Rather... well, there are several possibilities, but the leading theory at the moment is a large-scale Forgery. You know what that is, right?" @mathiau

It took Aln a moment to realize that Poller had entered the room. In her distraction, she had neglected to face her chair towards the door, and it was only through a chance flicker in the corner of her vision that she saw him at all. "Ah," she said, "I'm sorry, did you say something?"

Kodwola looks at her. "I take it you have been speaking to the barkeep, yes? Have you uncovered the source of his anxiety? I was quite left in suspense on that matter."
-
Personally, I'm leaning towards Cultivation. My specific evidence is a bit too involved with RoW to mention here, but in general I think she's planning something, and I don't think we know what.

Aln looked up, still writing, and blinked. Folorian's words, usually just faded, were flickering rapidly, akin to someone playing with a light switch. Her brain, she realized, simultaneously viewed him as a close friend and a mere acquaintance, and her Nightwatcher bane was reacting to that. Thankfully, Folorian had thought to lightweave as well. "Yes," she replied. "It is... a surreal experience, to say the least." She gave a faint smile. "I'm trying to focus on the most important aspects of the memories, but there's much to be distracted by. In the other reality, for example, I cowrote a really fascinating paper on converting between forms of Investiture, and now I have several theories on what Investiture looks like in its most basic form, untainted by a Shard's Intent." @mathiau @Ashbringer

Most of my book collection is on kindle, but my Mistborn books are physical and quite battered. I lent The Well of Ascension to a classmate and it came back with the cover off, so that was fun. I'm not a careless reader - I don't write in books or dogear them or leave them open on a table - but I do carry them around and read them at odd moments, which can take a toll.
-
Kodwola blinks at her, looking off balance. "Ah, well. Um. Yes. I was . . . I meant . . . I am going to . . . help the rangers. But I may not be able to . . . do it on my own. Yes?" There's a hint of desperation in her voice as she finishes speaking; it's clear that she is not in her element.
-
Wola nods. "I, of course, cannot speak for my recently acquired companions, but I am extremely willing to aid you in unraveling this enigma. I am unfortunately not experienced enough in following the Goddess to be able to banish the undead with but a wave of my hand, but I may be able to accomplish a similar effect with a wave of my mace, yes? Regardless, it is unlikely that I will be able to stand against a large host on my own, so my effectiveness is contingent on the other participants in this conversation also agreeing." With that lengthy comment, she turns expectantly to the others at the table. @the others at the table (I don't remember everyone that's here)

It's a bit difficult at the moment, as our school is still mostly remote for the pandemic, but we've been able to have video calls and meet up a few times in a park with my telescope. Right now we only have about half a dozen people, and they don't show up every time, but I'm hoping that once I have a telescope that can actually see deep sky objects more people might join.- 29 replies

"I would likewise wish to receive more information. You mentioned unusual beasts, yes? And some of them are undead?" @Negative_Null

Aln awoke with a compounded sense of disorientation. Memories warred in her mind, contradictory recollections fighting for precedence. For several terrifying moments, she had no idea where she was. Thankfully, clarity returned with concentration, and she recognized her surroundings as a makeshift bed in the back room of Cassandra Adama's Metallurgic Emporium. Hand on her head, she climbed to her feet. She appeared to have risen earlier than either of her companions, so rather than disturb them, she set off to locate writing materials and a table. Aln stared at the blank paper now set before her. Some strange apprehension filled her as she reached for the pen, and she found herself hesitating. It was quite a day yesterday, wasn't it? she thought instead. "Quite a day," Pel agreed. "But an enlightening one, in some ways. You did well." These memories, she thought quietly, they're not pleasant, are they? Pel was silent. If I really try to remember them, she continued, it'll be dangerous. I won't be happier for knowing. "Would you rather live in ignorance? In a lie?" The answer to that was obvious. Taking a deep breath, Aln picked up her pen and began to write everything she could recall. @mathiau @Ashbringer

Aln nearly didn't notice Poller's approach, but a comment from Pel allowed her to turn in time to catch most of the last sentence. She tapped Folorian's shoulder to let him know the presence of another person before replying, "Oh, right, the Emporium. That's kind of you - I would be very pleased to take you up on that offer. You wouldn't happen to have any infused spheres for trading, would you?"
-
"I can tell you what I mean once we find someplace safe," she said, standing up. "Suffice it to say that the Mother of Monsters is just the beginning."
-
I'm not sure if it's still open for new people to join, since we've already got a big party, but here's the link:

"I suggest that we leave quickly anyway," she replied, "but no. The attackers of the guild were beasts from beneath the city. They didn't use explosives, as far as I know. There were mostly Barghests, and a few Executors."

Different of them have different motivations. The general idea, I believe, is that they fight to win the war, wipe out the humans, and secure Roshar for the singers. The Fused would then likely die. Some of them, I suspect, instead wish to rule once the war is done. Some are fighting only for revenge. And some, like Raboniel, are just fighting so that it can finally be over. One thing that I really loved about this book is that it made the Fused individuals, instead of a faceless horde of baddies. And, like all groups of individuals, you can't sum all their motivations up so simply.

As giving compliments is always a good thing to do, I think I'll hand one out to @mathiau for great Alleyverse roleplay. Your character's very fun to interact with, you write well, and you're very understanding of me being slow. Keep on being fantastic, please!
