    The wave of light hit. And Astral screamed out in pain. Filthy light streamed through her veins, burning her. She felt like she was being seared from the inside and fell to her knees, gasping, one arm wrapped around her waist. Though the wave passed quickly, it left the Queen of Shadows feeling raw and weak, as if her body had been scrubbed with sandpaper. To make matters worse, she felt terribly hungry, as though she hadn't eaten in days. Unable to support herself, she fell to the ground, body trembling slightly as she took small, pained gasps of breath. She rolled over onto her back, looking to the sky. That wave had proven that Xino had gotten the spear. The meant she had done her job. Xino was safe, for the time being. But she couldn't forget what the withergeists had whispered to her. She wasn't one of them. She was a majestic being, a Queen with a mission. A villain, a creature of darkness. Not a mindless, rabid minion. A thing of beauty and power. Unfortunately, it was rather hard to feel beautiful and powerful when one was lying on the ground, trying to breathe normally. To cope, she let her armor melt, turning into her signature black silken robe with silver trim. She could fight in this if she needed to. For now... she needed to rest for a minute. Even one as magnificent as she could be worn out by having such a vile substance forced through her. She was lucky to even be alive... Sophie blinked awake. Her head was ringing - she'd hit it pretty hard when she fell to the ground - and her vision was a little blurry, but... It wasn't as dark anymore. Was she... dead? The last thing she remembered was seeing that withergeist sink its teeth into her shoulder, turning her skin grey. She'd failed, hadn't she? Hadn't she known that she wasn't good enough to be a hero? Her failure wouldn't just doom Xinoehp, it would doom the entire thread. And it would probably doom her siblings on CBST as well. But... she was dead. There was nothing she could do about it. Her vision began to clear, giving way to the grey sky. The ground was hard and rocky. She groaned looking at her hands. They were their normal shade of blue. That was good. Sophie sat up, looking around with big pupil-less eyes. It was then that she realized that she was still on the mountain. She... wasn't dead after all? She rubbed her eyes, trying to make sure she wasn't crazy. But it was all real. Xino stood tall, spear clutched in both hands. He looked so much more regal with it than she had. It truly belonged to him. He was a hero. Author above, she'd missed him. But... seeing him again made her realize how foolish her daydreams of kisses and true love had been. Even after walking through the storm of withergeists, she knew she would never be brave enough to kiss him the way she had fantasized. She blushed, looking at the ground. But... she had to say something. "Hi," she muttered, shooting him a sheepish smile. "Hi, Xinoehp."

    Every time someone posts on here, I get excited that it's Xino and every time it's not. It's really depressing. THIS CLIFFHANGER (mountin-faint-er?) IS KILLING ME! Or maybe it's killing Sophie, we don't know.

    Yay, it's done! I wasn't sure if I wanted to draw Heather with her hair out of her eyes or not, but I ended up doing it this way because this is how she usually has it and it shows her personality really well, even if it was a little bit hard to shade all of her hair and I would have loved to draw her other eye... Somehow, even though I make it dark under her eyes, Heather always manages to look really pretty. And maybe that's just because there's a lot of shadows on her face anyway, but she's special. The sad thing is that those eyes are gone now. And... I actually have a lot of thoughts on this, so bear with me. Marsh is one of my favorite characters in all of literature, so I've had a lot of time to picture him. Even before he was all spiked up, his eyes carried a lot of meaning. Brandon does a good job of mentioning them. At least, I'm pretty he does. I think he mentions their hardness when he has that interaction with Kelsier when you first meet him, but I know for a fact that when he talks to Vin, it mentions whenever he looks away from her. That scene has always carried a lot of weight for me because it shows how softhearted he is. He's outwardly pretty cold and I feel like his eyes are one of the only ways he shows emotion. For Heather, it's actually really similar. Not so much for Shadow, but that makes sense because Shadow is a Sliver with a drinking problem and Heather is a broken, depressed teenager... with a drinking problem. And she is outwardly quite cold. Not cold like mean, but cold like antisocial. And... kind of mean sometimes. Not the point. I'm focusing more on a series of moments when Heather (and Shadow, actually) interacts with Star. A lot of times when Star will say something that Heather really needs to hear, she'll just sit there and stare at her. And, as with Marsh, the emotion comes out that way. Heather has the unique ability to say more with her eyes than most people can say in a speech. And that is incredible. I wasn't able to quite capture it here, but I got pretty close, close enough that I'm proud to have drawn this. But I think I might be even more proud that I've gotten to know this wonderful character. @BringerofShadows

    TVG nodded. Yes. Astral herself is especially complex. It's one of the reasons why I brought her back. She's still Star underneath it all, just the most blackened, broken version of her.

    Sophie eyed Xinoehp nervously. She could hardly see him through the massive wave of darkness. "When you throw it," Astral said, noticing the nervous look, "I'll follow it, make sure it gets to its target. I want to see Xino safe and sound just as much as you do." She continued cutting withergeists away from Sophie. "All right..." she muttered, spear splurting globs of light. A withergeist slammed against her shield and she flinched, batting it away. "Almost there," Astral encouraged. "Almost! Just run a few steps, you'll be there in no time at all!" Sophie advanced a little faster, and a withergeist grabbed a hold of her hair. She squealed, but Astral swung her sword at it, cutting the lock of blue hair along with the creature. "A little further!" Sophie felt her head lighten as she stumbled forward a bit. "Aaaand... NOW!" Sophie threw the spear like a javelin and Astral raced alongside it with incredible speed. But without Astral to protect her flank, Sophie was left open. One of the creatures landed on her shoulder and even as Sophie tried to shoo it away, it sunk its teeth and claws into her. Sophie gasped, watching her skin there turn grey, ice shooting through her veins. That was all it took. She fainted dead away, shield fading without her constant Narrational support. Leaving her completely vulnerable to any, every, and all of the withergeists.

    Sophie felt her breath catch in her throat. "Okay..." she whimpered. A withergeist flew uncomfortably close to her and she yelped, pointing the spear in its direction and spraying it with light, killing it. As she did so, she felt another one swoop to her side and she barely turned in time to chop it in half. She took a step forward, fighting awkwardly, still feeling dangerously lightheaded. Finally realizing that she wasn't doing any good, Astral's shoulders slumped. She was completely useless. And little Sophie... well, at least she was killing them. The poor thing was only barely surviving. Something snapped inside of her. Something that was more Star than Astral. Something that wouldn't stand for this. It made her sprint forward, coming to Sophie's side to guard her. "I've got your back!" she said over the ominous whispers. "You use that weapon and FIGHT!" Sophie looked up. Astral was... defending her? In that moment, she felt more like her "big sis" than ever before. "Okay," she said again, this time with just a sliver of extra confidence. When she went to spray with her weapon this time, a little more came out and she was able to advance a few steps further. "This is CRAZY!" she exclaimed, feeling a little bit of nervous adrenaline. Astral smirked. "Just how I like it."

    Astral hissed at the creatures. "Why won't you die, you creatures of darkness?!" she yelled. But even as she said it, she knew why. She was one of them. You could hardly destroy evil when you yourself belonged within its ranks. She snarled at her own thought. She wasn't... she was only trying to redeem herself. Get her rightful revenge. But villains didn't have friends, only goals and empty, cold darkness. But... she wouldn't join them. Their only goal was to destroy. She was something more. Something far more beautifully complex. She let out a scream, continuing to fight. Sophie heard Astral's scream as the temperature dropped. She shivered. Her thin dress was hardly enough to keep her warm. She looked down at the ground far below and out at the massive wave of withergeists and felt her stomach drop. Was she really doing this? She continued to climb, but the thought still haunted her. Astral was still screaming and she was a wonderful fighter. What could Sophie do against a threat like that? It was the same horrible idea as before. The idea that had plagued her since they'd left. Still, she continued, doubt tearing at her. Silently, she cried out to TVG. I need help, she begged. There was no answer, only the cold wind. A sob building in her throat, she pulled herself over the side and looked death in the eyes. She put up the half forcefield on her arm and raised her spear in a shaking hand. "You can do this," she said, voice trembling. "Come on, Sophie. You've got this..." Summoning her strength, she tried forcing power through her weapon. This time, instead of the fountain of light from before, there were only a few squirts. The crystalline substance splattered onto a handful of withergeists and they evaporated, but there were so many... Sophie began feeling light headed and overwhelmed. No! she thought. Don't faint, don't faint!!!

    Astral smiled, forming into her true self, decked in her plate and metal boots. She pulled her silver sword from out of nowhere. The whole scene reminded her of QoS. That was where she had died. Now, it was time to make up for that. She growled at the withergeists and began hacking at them, knowing that, as a being made of the same essence they were, she could not be hurt by them. Sophie climbed as fast as she could. Terror ran coldly through her veins, but not coldly enough that she would freeze. She had reached the climax and now it was time to end this thing. Her spear waited close to her in the Void, and she prepared herself to summon forcefields, just in case.

    By now, Astral was so far ahead of Sophie that she was out of sight. She growled in her head, going so fast she could barely sense what was happening. Below her, she felt Sophie's slowly fading mental signature. The girl was quite distressed. Quite tired and drained. And... more broken than she let on. Astral thought she might have felt a spark of sympathy for her. But of course, it was gone within a moment. Sophie didn't matter. Xino mattered. And right now, his doom was approaching.

    "Uh... Gotta go!" Sophie said, scrambling up the side of the mountain. There's no time for cute little... Yoda things, you gotta go save your True Love! The thought made her blush, but also propelled her onward.

    Sophie turned around and was captivated by its large, adorable eyes. "OH MY WORDS, THAT IS SO FLIPPIN' CUTE," she exclaimed. She waved a hand turning the bounty hunter into pale blue petals.

    Astral narrowed her eyes and, without warning, melted into sludge and began climbing with her usual speed. Sophie watched, mildly disgusted by the spectacle, and followed.

    Sophie's eyes widened and she gasped softly. "Oh, Author..." she whispered. Astral looked upon the mountain solemnly. "No time to lose," she said. "Let's go." Sophie stayed frozen in place, staring upwards, tears coating her eyes. "Xino..." she whispered. She trembled slightly, but moved forward on stiff feet, imagining in her mind what horrible things might be happening to him.
