  1. Am I the only one reminded of Han Solo? Mercy and Hoid fighting with Shard Blades. Mercy: Did Frost tell you what really happened to your old teacher? Hoid: You killed him! Mercy: No, I am your teacher. Hoid: Noooo ... and just lets them switch on the time freezing machine. Then Destiny carries him off in a spaceship made from Aethers.
  2. Force fields. Design's fake body is made out of force fields. Yet another new Invested art.
  3. They still need the location in 3D and 2D for the CR.
  4. Correct, but that means that proto-Warbreaker postdates proto-Stormlight.
  5. We know the protagonist -> he or she does not come from an utterly unknown world The protagonist hails from an early novel -> rules out Threnody and First of the Sun for sure, possibly also Roshar, Sel and Nalthis They had to add three suns to the database -> the protagonist has to be a worldhopper Each of these clues alone is pretty useless. But together they do not leave a lot of places. AFAIK there was no Elantris Prime. (Way of Kings Prime) In fact, wasn't Roshar a later invention, postdating Taldain and Scadrial?
  6. Exactly, but to a different degree. That was my point. This dimension business is pretty seedy if you go into the details. If your touristic dream is a real dungeon where you can torture purple llamas for real, our Earth cannot compete. I will remain silent about the even more unsavory options. And the dimensions suitable for such activities will be cheaper, as the language requirement falls away. In fact for some options people are a hinderance. Do you want to offer safaris into lands of roving mammoths and roaring sabretooth cats? Take a dimension in which man has gone extinct. I wonder where the cost is. Is it the actual transfer or do they just have to make good on the high initial cost of discovery?
  7. But it would not be our Rome. You could always say that it is not the city whose streets Caesar, Ovid and Tacitus wandered, but just copies.
  8. That would be White Sand or a protoform thereof, wouldn't it? In that case I am going to hazard a guess. The cover is featuring Baon.
  9. Tin? That line of reasoning depends on aluminium being different from other metals in the Cosmere. It is not. Metals work in fabrials. It is not clear how different the effect of aluminium is from other systems in allomancy. It removes alien Investiture. It does not remove all Investiture. Spikes stay. Well, no. It does not affect metalminds. It does not affect spikes. And, it does not destroy your spirit web, which is made from Investiture. The effect on an allomancer's store of metal can be explained that way. They hold Preservation's Investiture, which is alien to the allomancer.
  10. Yes, but a fabrial is not powered by the metal. And that is a very big difference. It does so everywhere. Hence the aluminium shielding in soothing parlours. That is not the full story. It has a role in feruchemy and hemalurgy. There is a link to Identity.
  11. Yes, but it does nor depower a fabrial. The effect in allomancy is specific to allomancy, because the metal is the connection to Preservation.
  12. I cannot absolutely rule it out, but quite some coincidence Is this system close to Threnody? We then need to find a separate reason for these core aethers to come to Lumar
  13. I did not want to write interdimensional travel into the title, but that is what this is about. They have access to an unlimted number of worlds with limited access. I am leaving aside the ethical implications of interdimensional imperialism for now. What does that mean from a social and economic angle? there can be no absolute shortages of resources. If you really need some natural resource, you can source it from some dimension. some tourist destinations take a real hit. Unspoiled tropical beaches are no longer rare. Others do not. You can see the real Rome only in the real Rome. crime pays again. If you get a lot of money and manage to evade the law for long enough to buy and escape to your own dimension, you live your dream. There is a market for personal combat instructions and gear and possibly mercenaries to a far greater extent. language instruction in classical dead languages suddenly has a much larger market. They don't speak an understandable form of English? So what, speak Latin! The dimension is much cheaper.
  14. He has combat biomods which he recalls to be quite expensive. That strongly suggests that he is the real thing. In that case why did he have stuff installed he could not pay to activate? That suggests that he did that in his old job hoping to make the payments. That is something hard to do from a budget dimension.
  15. Neither does alumium destroy Investiture. It blocks it. Scadrial does not have Cognitive Shadows in great numbers. We do not know what it would do to Kelsier. We know three effects It harms Threnodite Shades It undoes the withering effect of injuries by Shades It kills spores of Lumaran aether What it does not do is far less clear. It does not do Allomancy. I think we must assume that it does not work against the Fused or the Returned. But that is an assumption. Now, prior to TOTES the theory that silver specifically works against Ambition's Investiture was parsimonous. Now that would require that the aethers of Lumar at least were influenced by Ambition. When, where, how?
  16. Yes, but then they would know what a normal ocean looks like in the Cosmere, unless they were on an isolated world. That means that we are potentially looking at the oldest Cosmere story. That in turn raises the question of what happened to technological development in the Cosmere. Lumar has powered machinery. Where is it? There is a perpendicularity on the planet or Hoid could not be on it. This should have been exported thousands of years ago. What happened to Lumar?
  17. That it does not prevent. But then the people who know how to make shadows would know details about the Evil.
  18. They could. But what does that help us? Sure they may have been on Sel. But then you make even more certain that the kingdom of Iriis named after the Iri people whose names comes from outside. The timeline is not a problem if you say that Lumar is the fifth land. But then Hoid must be telling the story to somebody from First of the Sun.
  19. Not really. Even if you could cancel out the 300 or so years since the Iriali vanished. But those are not the problem. The problem is the length of Iriali history on Roshar. Iri was among the Silver Kingdoms, yet the Silver Kingdoms predate everything but Elantris and White Sand for sure and likely even Elantris, possibly even White Sand. You could have explained that away, if the Iriali were the original inhabitants of the Silver Kingdoms but the people now seen in Iri had taken over the Rosharan name. But then the name on Lumar could not have been Iriali.
  20. The Evil made them evavuate the main continent Nazh knows the rituals to become a Shadow abd he calls Kelsir a Shadow, not a Shade. People in Silence's time so not. Nazh cannot describe the Evil. He did not operate under the Evil. We'd know. Shardbearers and some Radiants were surely rich. As are the Returned. And the Fused are elite. Of they have a problem with fine cutlery oe jewelery we'd know. If defeating a Fused were as easy as stabbing them with a silver dinner knife, that would have been discovered.
  21. Because the Threnodites were still powerful enough to send out armies through the CR.
  22. I am sorry, but that cannot be the whole truth. The timing would be hopeless. The battle happened before the First Desolation. That was thousands of years ago. Yet the Evil had not arrived at the time of Secret History, yet Threnody already created Cognitive Shadows in numbers sufficient to make an army out of them. In this case we need to give the full quote: Sort of. Ambition changed something. Yet something else is reported to predate that. And yet other things happened so late that they must be either attributed to an unknown entity or immediate stages must be assumed. Threnody is complicated. Whence the power comes is unknown.
  23. Camouflage? He suspected to be hunted. Exactly. Hence I suspect somebody attacked him while transferring. But now that you mention it, there is an even wilder hypothesis. They were deliberately looking for dimensions with slower technological development. Probably because those with faster or equal development may strike back effectively. However, fast worlds should have the same technologies. Do we know they are from the same dimension? Are they looking for him or another version of him with minor differences, hair color included?
  24. You are making two unstated assumptions, which may, but need not be true transfers take roughly the same time, that is you cannot get a nicer and faster transfer if you pay extra this is a pursuit, not an ambush If we are talking about their dimension and the protagonist is a thief and intruder, we'll have to solve one basic problem. How did they know that he is coming?
  25. Do you need to borrow that term with this definition? The doubling of frequencies of lasers fundamentally comes from a linear relationship between energy and frequency in the physics of light, doesn't it? What I am trying to get at is that light from Stormlight is not ordinary light. If you had a relationship like E = k * f ^2, the octave would be an increase of frequency by a factor of 2^(1/2), wouldn't it?
