  1. Works to an extent, nut you will not overcome inertia that way. And your gun becomes even more expensive. You will reach a point, where you better invest all those ressources in a better warhead and an alternative (cheaper) system for launching.
  2. Aiming, mobility, rate of fire, lack of novelty. AFAICT pike formations were geared to repulsing cavalry. A Thunderclast may be seen as a Rosharan equivalent, but pikes won't work against them. Against massed infantry they are unlikely to work as well. Again mobility. You won't have them in many cases. The method with ropes and hammers actually looks quite sensible as long as grenades are not an option. These will work, but again mobility. Any gun requires materials withstanding high pressures. So building a light cannon is hard.
  3. It is not just any metal. That would be impractical. They have specialised manufacturers of extremely pure alloys and pure metals. You cannot use a village blacksmith, except maybe for some steel, iron & copper. Hence targeting everything urban is a viable tactic.
  4. Ehm. A Fullborn is awesome with a supply of metals. Without metals he is a feruchemist. And he is not going to carry a steel mill on his back. Hence at some point he has to go to a small (and reducible) number of places. I will go for those. If the continent has forests it will burn, literally. Otherwise I am reduced to devastating a continent. And we are talking a war situation here. At the peak of the arms race we made thousands of warheads per year. Now it depends on how much time you give our Earth, but if it is more than a few years, the arsenal will be horrible. First you need to locate that dot. Then add it. Before you die.
  5. I don't target. Saturation bombardment and traps. I may have to burn a continent. So be it.
  6. Good suggestion. A few thousand megatons of TNT equivalent should do that. The true power of a whole planet with nuclear knowledge if it were really turned towards destruction is horrifying.
  7. It lets through light. Infrared radiation is light. Use a aufficiently large warhead. Now, it is possible that the Elantrians know an Aon for darkness or reflection. But it is not plausible that they would deploy it before the first few examples of being hit by such weapons. He is also vulnerable to extreme heat. You cannot freeze to death a compounder with enough metals. Vaporizing, however, still works. He can cool himself only until his metalminds are filled.
  8. Under this assumption whence comes the Irongate river and what has happened to the Channerell River?
  9. If you look at it from the right angle, it is what she asked for. Stormlight is not hers, it is the Stormfather's or Honor's. So it cannot get into her. Thus she stays herself unchanged to something else. One way to misunderstand her is to say that her Identity is unchangable. (Sel) She is maturing. Cultivation would not, indeed probably cannot, make something or somebody who cannot reproduce. But after that stage will have been reached, all bets are open. Indeed Lift may be quite an investment. To lose her just because your timing is off by a few decades would be inconvinient. Interpreting her wish is probably to nicely put. Finding an interpretaton useful to Cultivation and interpretable to be compatible with the wish as seen under the aspect of cultivating somebody is likely to come closer. He is still Bridge 4 and they need their cook. There is a war going on. They are on the front lines or, worse, behind them. They are taking casualties. Rock's absence need not be explained with a reason that is centered on Rock.
  10. How large a share of its continent's surface area is the Elendel Basin?
  11. The ecology of Roshar presupposes magical powers. Yolen had the Sho Del and dragons. Well, we have a crucial hint. People got from Yolen to worlds without perpendicularities. How? In the end Investiture allows you to break the laws of conventional physics. As far as we understand them. A mundane world can of course be more advanced then an invested world at some point in time. However not in the end state after contact. Now, whether a Shard in residence has anything to with it is a totally different question. At least the Metallic Arts and Awakening work everywhere.
  12. Whatever has suited Cultivation. Well, almost anything. The wish is too vague. Unless you wanted to test it by soulcasting her, we don't know. For all we know Cultivation intends her to be a weapon to capture Yelig-Nar by making her immune to being converted to a gem.
  13. For all we know Lift may be immortal. There is a war going on. Bridge 4 is the core of the Windrunners. Special reasons for absences of soldiers during a war are not needed. The inability to breathe in Stormlight coupled with the necessity to make it metabolically.
  14. Why? Is it more miraculous than a Soulcasting or a Lightweaver? The Surge of Transportation?
  15. So, how could you trigger doomsday? Aons Make an Aon that replicates itself. Awakening "Destroy everything but yourself" - the command you should not say making Nightblood II Awakening & Hemalurgy Make an artificial spike and watch mankind mutate itself into oblivion
  16. That gives me an idea. Take a metal tube closed at one end. Bore a small hole into it near the closed end. Press hot wax into it, until a bit protudes through the hole you have bored. Press a bullet into the wax. The Soulcaster turns the wax into air with a transformation that retains mass. Bang - you have a gun.
  17. Investigate the distribution of investiture in metalminds. Cut them into unequal parts. Etch away a part of their mass. Investigate the role of surfaces by using powders as metalminds. Investigate the metals. Measure the role of impurities in the use of metalminds Time how long it takes to leach away metal reserves. Is the effect linear? Investigate Nicrobursts. Is there a loss of efficiency or an increase. Stick a ruby laser through the boundary of a time bubble. Put an electromagnet into a time bubble. What happens to the magnetic field outside teh bubble. Look at an iron compounder with a gravimeter. Look at an EEG of somebody being soothed or rioted
  18. Roshar is at war and the Knights Radiant are reforming. Although some Surges (Division being the clearest example) are weapons, we can still ask which simple weapon could be used to enhance a Surge or be enhanced with a Surge. As at least the advanced Radiants have a Shardblade I will focus on ranged weapons. Gravitation Guns would be tempting. But the choice would be wrong. The accelerations you can get are too low. A small mass will not achieve killing energies. And aim is a problem. What can be done? I would suggest a javelin in a tube. With Gravitation you cannot get high speeds, so for momentum you need mass. But accelerating a heavy object is not an issue, given enough Stormlight. So I'd use a tube preferably with holes and an open back , which has to be as straight as possible. Put a javelin into it, add a few feathered vanes to it and lash it to go forward. You can add sights to the tube. Abrasion Crossbows. Only the vanes of a bolt would need to have wind resistance. Range would be close to ballistics in a vacuum and the loss of speed small. For the other Surges however, I see no obvious path to weaponization. Any ideas?
  19. They are not. The Windrunners are. A Dustbringer with a gun becomes more terrifying. A Soulcaster who knows about TNT, let alone plutonium, is awesome. Good luck using a radar-controlled gun against Lightweavers. And so on. I see that point. The magic obviously can become ubiquitous. The mages become redundant. Any sufficiently automated magic becomes indistinguishable from advanced technology.
  20. I was following orders is the best defense you can put up on Roshar. So Dalinar, who is fighting a war with his back to the wall, will put the first ally among the Skybreakers, a surviving order of the Knights Radiant in prison? While he bears the only weapon that could permanently kill a Fused (or a Herald)? A man who could just cut his way out of his cell?
  21. I am afraid the very attempt is stupid. If your hemalurgy is that advanced, you'd better give yourself the vorpal cutting ability rather than make a bladed weapon.
  22. Gibbeting with an extremely tight cage. You have to put the aluminium so close to his skin that summoning any plate is prevented. The odds of long term survival are low.
  23. He does not have to stay in prison for long. Some Shin dude used a surge in public. How many have seen a portrait of the Assassin in White? And would recognize him on teh battlefield? Publishing that the Skybreakers are now on the other side is not good for morale. And you get a secret agent. And admitting that you are now in league with the Assassin in White is not good for the unity of the coalition. For a whole year?
  24. In combat, if just snatching any bystander to sacrifice worked, you would not use one of your fighting men to teleport. In fact Dakhor monks are expensive. You would use a soldier if willingness decided the issue. No, by all indications it takes another Dakhor monk for some sacrifices at least to work.
  25. But he means some secret society. This is too unlikely for pure chance and a single person. (Elantris) But why would he live in a lonely light house in Shadesmar? He clearly, as his words confirm, on the lookout for the resurgence of Surgebinders.
