  1. Childlike, upbeat, somewhat far away sounding or like it's coming from inside something. With little reverb to make it more inhuman sounding.I guess because it's a sword I imagine the voice sounding like it's bouncing off metal.
  2. It's clearly a pre-existing thing Odium modified. It has black clouds and red lighting. Red signifies on Shard co-opting/hijacking the investiture of another in the Cosmere. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/173/#e8340 Black often signifies corrupted, blended, mixed investiture https://wob.coppermind.net/events/250/#e7374 Whether it was a spren or something else is unclear. I really like the idea of the Everstorm having a spren in there, mostly because I find the idea creepy. It's a sentient storm that's been enslaved by Odium. The Everstorm was worked on elsewhere, probably on Braize, and summoned to Roshar by the Listeners. Since Cultivation is heavily invested in Roshar I don't think she can strike at Odium on Braize. Odium isn't worried about manifesting a form on Roshar during Oathbringer. It's only a projection or representation of him, but it's still something. He can act to a certain extent without fear of being attacked.
  3. Maybe all 9 were in or around Kholinar that day. Seems like there were at least 5 depending on who you think Liss is. “Have you seen me?” “No.” Brutal
  4. Are we talking like a Radiant duel or are they actually fighting to the death? If it's a real fight to the death then, as they currently stand, Kaladin would lose because he'd freak out having to fight an ally / former ally. Even though Jasnah couldn't bring herself to kill Renarin I think she is ruthless enough to kill Kaladin. If it's a duel or a fight where Kaladin isn't conflicted I think Jasnah would win because she is more experienced by 6 years or so and will use her soulcasting in ways that he's won't expect because he hasn't seen much soulcasting. Plus her plate blocks his lashing. Kaladin struggles with Amaran/Yelig-nar when Amagnar soulcasts the ground into mud and then back to stone. Kaladin can't lash her to the sky and end the fight in 5 seconds because of her plate. The Nahel bond might give Kaladin some resistance to her soulcasting, but I'm doubtful. Jasnah soulcast a bunch of Sadeas soldiers who had spren in them. Not the same as the nahel bond, but they had investiture in them to make their eyes glow red and it didn't resist her. Kaladin was able to lash a Fused to the sky and that Fused had Voidlight and is a Cognitive Shadow which is made of investiture, but the investiture didn't resist Kaladin's lashing. In general, I think the windrunner powers are more combat useful because manipulating gravity is tough to top as a combat skill. Coming at an opponent from any angle, lashing them all around, lashing large objects at them etc. Soulcasting is awesome in and out of combat, Transportation seems to allow her hurl people through the air, she appears to do this in the battle of Thaylen city off screen. Adolin sees a soldier fly out of an alleyway and then Adolin sees Jasnah in the alley.
  5. End up being Kelsier who will have a reason for doing it, whether they are the Set or people/creatures behind the Set or something new.
  6. I'm so confused by the WoB and then the walking back of the WoB seeming to clash with OB text where Stormfather is stunned that Dalinar can renew spheres. I would have thought, given there are 3 specific, very different seeming superspren, each bondsmith had a different perk along with the standard Bondsmith abilities. Now that I think about it I guess all three Spren may mess with spiritual realm things directly in different ways. Nightwatcher doesn't renew spheres as far as we can tell, she modifies people. She messes with their spiritweb, so she manipulates the spiritual realm. Sibling probably powers/is Urithiru. Implicit in that powering is that it's filing gems in the core with investiture; either with itself or stormlight. Perhaps, since Bondsmiths can manipulate spiritual aspects through Adhesion they can touch the spiritual realm and yank a bit of investiture out like Dalinar seemed to do when he activated the Oathgate. If they can all clap and make a perpendicularity I will be annoyed. Seems like a Dalinar/Stormfather/Tanavast CS thing. Only Dalinar gets to do the last clap! Besides Stormfather seemed clear that no Bondsmith had done that before.
  7. Yeah, Maya (Adolin's dead blade) and Wyndle (Lift's spren) are Cultivationspren https://coppermind.net/wiki/Mayalaran https://coppermind.net/wiki/Wyndle Perhaps the radiant spren were initially made by Honor and Cultivation modifying these pre-existing lesser spren. They are related in that way. Pre-shattering most spren on Roshar were lesser spren. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/2/#e141
  8. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm so he couldn't, but he will in book 4? Or someone else will be a bondsmith and they'll charge spheres in book 4, but not using the perpendicularity? My reading of this was that no bondsmith bonded to Stormfather could renew spheres in the past, but I guess it is that they couldn't do the perpendicularity. Or will Dalinar Connect to the other Bondsmiths and that will allow them to do it as well? Confusing.
  9. Seems like too big of a job for max 3 people to infuse all the gems. Sibling fusing with the core seems like the way to do it. Yeah, a Bondsmith powers it in a way, but Sibling does most of the work. Also, a waste Ishar's time to be charging the tower. Ishar in present day has nothing better to do, but when he was saner I wouldn't want him powering the HVAC. Who was Urithiru made for? This poem from tWoK epigraph Ch. 36 seems to think it was made for Heralds, but I always thought it was wrong on that point. Seems like Urithiru was built soon after KR were founded, during the lifetime of Nohadon who we know didn't have the KR when he was young and he wrote the book that's incredibly important to the KR. A book in which he describes walking to Urithiru. As a young man he wore gold threads in a pattern on his forehead that formed the symbol that became the KR symbol. It's not completely nailed down, but it seems like Urithiru was made for the Radiants.
  10. Not screaming because the lesser spren are mostly mute. But, yeah why doesn't Syl care about plate? Because they protect instead of kill? I would still be creeped out if someone wore a suit made up of my cousin's corpses.
  11. Yeah, Stormfather isn't great about remembering or telling things to Dalinar. I think you are correct that Dalinar did a smaller scale thing. He succeeded in what he attempted to do early in the book, bring stormlight over from the spiritual realm. He asks if they can charge spheres outside of the storms and Stormfather is like "I dunno, let's try" so he might have forgotten in that early scene. Like Syl didn't know about the storm deflecting power "I didn't know you could do it until you did it!". Whereas in the Unity scene Stormfather is surprised and said "no Bondsmith's done that before". Bondsmiths couldn't summon a perpendicularity because Tanavast was still around, not a CS absorbed by the Stormfather.
  12. Might be the difference between creating the perendicularity and what Dalinar did to make the Oathgate work without a blade. I didn't realize what he did off screen for Kaladin was different from what he did onscreen. I assumed he did the perpendicularity again. Here is the WoB Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] Dalinar Ascends, right? Like, right then, there. Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] I have RAFO'd that. Whether he is Ascending or not is RAFO. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] Okay, because I know he kind of mentions from that, I don't know how to say his name but the older guy who has the Diagram... Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Taravangian, yeah. Whether that deserves to be a capital "A" or not is a matter of argument. It can be disputed. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] I guess my main question would just be Dalinar's now able to pull Stormlight and give it to people now. Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] He definitely can. That is a Bondsmith power, so. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] That is a Bondsmith power, okay. Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] That is specifically a Bondsmith power. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] Because my roommate was saying well, the Stormfather was surprised he could do that or was the Stormfather surprised that he was able to bridge - Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] He was surprised by what was happening to Dalinar as a whole. Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] Oh okay, that's what I thought because I was like, because I felt like the Stormlight, that would be a Bondsmith power. Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Let's say that the Stormfather and Odium were seeing something in Dalinar that, perhaps, the average person watching even who is knowledgeable about Surges would not completely understand. But he will be able to use that power and Bondsmiths in the past have used that same power. Footnote: Brandon clarified that he might have been unintentionally misleading in his answers to this question during his Stormlight 4 Update 1. Idaho Falls signing (Dec. 29, 2018)
  13. EDIT: I think the geometric lines are the strongest argument for stormlight instead of lesser spren, because it is significantly different from how the blade typically just appears out of of mist. Like they are measuring and then filling it in. Although, since it is plate, they may need to be more careful as to not crush their radiant, measure before fully transforming. My question is what is the difference between what Stormlight is and what spren are made of? Aren't they both investiture, one has cognition the other doesn't? Why would one type of investiture become an unbreakable metal while the other is breakable? Investiture gains intelligence over time if left alone. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/134/#e2253 https://wob.coppermind.net/events/181/#e3776 Perhaps Stormlight is 100% honor investiture while some spren are a mix of H+C, does that matter? Is the blade an alloy that's stronger? If so, wouldn't the blades have different strengths since the various spren have different % makeups of the two investitures? If the only real difference is cognition or level of intelligence then I think the smarter radiant spren directly forming an unbreakable metal while the much dumber secondary spren transform into the weaker metal is the simpler more straightforward method. Why does it need to be this extra step? Why would the dumber spren be the ones to take up crafting separate objects instead of just transforming to protect the radiant they are drawn to.
  14. That's a good point. I don't know that I buy my theory anymore that they had to do with the Heralds breaking. I'm thinking the unmade were previously part of a group 10 spren that represented the fundamental forces. Whether these were known as the Dawnshards I dunno. 10 is the magic number of the Roshar system and of the surges aka the 10 fundamental forces. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/74/#e9725 Odium may not have wanted the Connection spren or surge because he's not a fan of bringing things together. He turns people against each other, he splinters shards, he doesn't want to pick up any other shards because he doesn't want to connect Odium with another intent. He may just not want that spren or the fundamental force of bringing things together that it represents because it runs counter to his intent. There may be a 10th fundamental force spren that he chose not to co-opt.
  15. I think it has to be the lesser spren given how we’ve seen them drawn to Kaladin and Dalinar and they seem to be trying to help when both display awesome new abilities in OB. I used to think the radiant spren wrangled the lesser spren, but the windspren and gloryspren help automatically in these situations and afterwards Syl and Stormather are like “why did you just do?” And the scene where Dalinar starts to get plate the Stormfather was busy getting beat up by Odium in an attempt to hold him back. Spoilers for length. These are good points. We’ve debated before, I think the spren sacrifice their cognition to make the transition to the physical. The greater cognition they have in the cognitive realm the greater presence they have in the physical realm. Radiant spren are smart in the cognitive realm. We’ve seen gloryspren and windspren in the cognitive realm and they are dumb as hell. The greater sacrifice gives stronger physical presence. The blades are unbreakable while the plate is weaker and breaks. The blades don’t break which means they don’t need to be repaired and don’t need “fuel”. Plate needs fuel only when it is taking damage. Lesser spren don’t really talk or make noise, they don’t scream alive or dead.
  16. Agreed if he says it’s fixed then that pretty much settles it. Yeah, I thought about it more I think when he says “we” he means he and Dalinar attracted Unmade through the bad things they did. That’s why they hear voices and such. One other minor thing of note, Jezrien says “I used to think it wasn’t my fault” which is the thing Odium loves to tell people. ”I drove you to do this. It wasn’t your fault.” OB ch 118 “Give up your pain ... You can’t be blamed. Stop carrying that burden.” OB ch 54 Moash hears a voice in his head. It’s either Odium or his spren. It’s more a theme than anything and it’s a very human thing to blame others even without Odium. But maybe Odium got them to feel less responsible for their actions which made it easier for them to quit.
  17. They are a Roshar system specific thing. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Dawnshard Brandon usually RAFOs any questions about them. The Stormfather tells Dalinar “He raved, speaking of the Dawnshards, ancient weapons used to destroy the Tranquiline Halls.” OB Ch. 113 Why would the stormfather call his god a weapon and why the plural if Odium was the weapon that destroyed Ashyn? Honor mentions the Dawnshards in a vision. Why we would he call himself that when he calls himself a god and The Almighty in the same vision?
  18. I want to add that the Everstorm barely behaves like a storm. Even by Roshar magic storm standards. It’s default speed is 9 day revolutions but before the battle of Taylen City it came in 5 days. Then it comes to a complete stop for the battle. Sometimes it’s loud but a lot of times it’s windless and silent except for the red lightning. “It was hauntingly silent. Those red lightning bolts didn’t rumble in a proper way.” - OB CH. 4 “Some reports of the Everstorm mention no wind, only lightning. Other confusingly reported no rain, but burning embers. The Everstorm varies greatly, even within each passing” - OB CH. 59 The Highstorms seem like a healthy mix of natural storm and magic. This is something else. The OG Stormspren summoned by the Singers with little stormspren in their hearts.
  19. Looking at Ahu’s ramblings led me to connect the Unmade to the Heralds breaking as others have and while I was writing this it clicked that the Everstorm could be 10th Unmade created from the 10th Herald breaking. OR should I say E-Vers-Torm?!?! I hid the passage above for length. It is Jezrien rambling to Dalinar in the flashback. What’s he talking about? I know the very end he is referencing the Fused torturing him. But the beginning is about the Unmade and the middle fits the Unmade since they are ancient spren, better than the Fused who are cognitive shadows of Singers. “We let them in” They let the Fused OUT, doesn’t seem right. “We attracted them” How many times have we heard ”attracting a spren” used in SA? ”Befriended them” eh, restating the last thing doesn’t tell us much. “You open yourself up to it and you pay the price” - open up to a bond like with a Spren? ”They ripped my brain out” This has to be the Fused. Is there more of a connection between the Unmade and the Heralds than previously thought? I know there is the theory that one was created when each of the nine Heralds broke their first time. I was skeptical of it, where is the 10th now that Taln broke? But Jezrien seems to be lumping them in with the start and cause of all the problems. What if the Unmade were previously the Dawnshards and were bonded to Heralds to help with the Oathpact? The breaking of the Heralds damaged these spren and allowed Odium to Unmake them. “We were made, then Unmade” Sja-Anat to Shallan CH. 84 The Unmade weren’t always as they are now and the change was a destructive one. People make oaths. The Heralds “bent” their Oaths according to the Stormfather OB ch. 38. One oath Unmade per Herald. “A champion could work well for you but it is uncertain. ... And without the Dawnshards” tWoK Ch. 75 Honor seems to imply the Dawnshards were helpful against Odium in the past, but won’t be available. “Taking the Dawnshard, known to bind all creatures mortal and voidish, he crawled up the steps made for Heralds ten strides tall apiece toward the grand temple above.” tWoK Ch . 36 A Dawnshard that was “known to” as in had already proven it can bind creatures including voidish. It proved this when it helped with binding the Fused for the Oathpact. “One Dawnshard is different from all the rest” -WoB https://wob.coppermind.net/events/226/#e4824 One is different cause it’s the one Odium wasn’t able to corrupt. He got 9 out of 10. “That matches the vision Dalinar saw, though some reports mention ten Unmade”.- OB Ch 77 There are 10 Dawnshards 9 of which have been Unmade leading to the 9 or 10 confusion. But if Taln broke shouldn’t there be a 10th now? Yes, it’s the Everstorm. Unmade we’ve seen are all corrupted / co-opted black or red investiture. The Everstorm clouds are black and it’s lightning is red. Its not spelled E-Vers-Torm like a proper Unmade, but that would give the game away. Possible that Everstorm is what it used to be called before Odium modded it. Which is why Tanavast and the Stormfather already knew its name before it came. Tanavast calls it that in the visions.
  20. Yeah, Brandon wrote annotations for Part 1 of tWoK and he said Kaladin did not work without Syl. https://brandonsanderson.com/category/annotations/the-way-of-kings-annotations/ He wanted to accurately portray depression and challenge is an accurate portrayal would be them not doing much and feeling terrible all the time. Syl was moved over from another story so that Kaladin’s Part 1 chapters were bearable. I think that’s why Moashs arc in OB drags for me. He’s depressed and oppressed but there is no Syl.
  21. They do say “Travel was forbidden by word of the parent” ... “The parent is dead now” “Travel was forbidden during the parent’s last days” Ch. 116 OB They are explaining to Shallan that they can’t open the gate because the parent who told them to lock it is dead and can’t undo the command. Can’t be Cultivation or Odium. I think Dalinar can unlock it now. He may have to form the perpendicularity and then give the order.
  22. That’s his response to the oath and not the oath itself. I don’t think the oath is turn off this emotion or desire. I didn’t say beyond help, I said accept they can’t protect everyone they want to. They have to choose to protect some and not torture themselves with guilt over it afterwards or collapse and not choose in the first place. This radiant may be likening not beating himself up about the people he chooses not to save to not wanting to help them in the first place.
  23. I think they are part of a (magic) fungus or moss based ecosystem but I can’t find where I read that. Brandon said Singers are kind of similar to Sho Del. https://wob.coppermind.net/events/353/#e10319
  24. Sorry, I had to insult every character. I like most of these characters, but here is what bugs me about them. Stormfather: Grumpy, unhelpful piece of ___ Rock: Thin-air supremacist Sadeas: Climate Change Denier. Come on Toril, the red lighting storm blew the wrong way and you still don't care?! Kelsier: Smug git. Addicted to founding religions that worship him Elend: Boring Adolin: Kinda boring Venli: Jerk Gavilar: Great plan, champ. Amaram: *Shaking head* I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed. You had so much potential. Shallan: Word play is more often annoying than funny. Trying too hard. Ati: You don't need to manifest as a meat-puppet with spiders coming out of your mouth. Trying too hard. Taravangian: Reading the "diminished capacity" note regularly for 70-80 years is pathetic. It said "may have", does the Stormfather brood over every incorrect Stormwarden prediction? (Probably, he's got nothing better to do) Lirin (Kal's dad): Insufferable preachy pacifist and hypocrite. "I know war is inevitable. I just didn't want you to be part of it." - OB Ch. 7 Oh, OK, as long as only other people's kids are doing the dirty work and dying horribly violent deaths. Then he hangs his head when Kaladin summons his blade. Oh no, my son is a magic warrior man who can fly, what a bummer! Odium: Passion my ___, buddy. Also, Dalinar didn't even know the King's Drop existed until you sent the Thunderclast after it. Thought you could see the future, idiot. Kaladin: You're not a god and in the Cosmere even gods can't save everyone or themselves sometimes. Jasnah: is perfect and i wuv her and we're getting married!!
  25. Good idea! Hoid in his Stormlight appearances: Either help or don't, dude! He's in it way too much for someone who is having his own story in background that is only tangentially related to the concerns of our heroes. I know his thing is he helps where it's convenient and Roshar is a means to an end, but why bother, my man? If you're meddling this much why not do something really helpful? He shows up in Stormlight and makes coy comments like someone who already finished a book you just started. "Wait til you find out about the origin ". I can imagine him winking after everything he says. "Fortunately, it's the best type of lie ... Why, the ones I tell, of course " His jokes take too long to set up and he explains them. Every time he says "you see" I know a joke diagram is coming. (tWoK ch. 22, WoR Epilogue TWICE & OB Ch. 82)
