“Whoa, dude,” Dan said, stopping when he saw Shae’s muscles, and those scars. “Yeah, I take back what I said last night. I said something last night, right?” Dan looked at Shae’s face, and saw that it had turned quite red. “Uhhh,” Dan mumbled, looking at himself. As a rule, he only ever wore trousers that he usually rolled up to his knees. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, but he never did unless it was really cold. “Well. That’s kinda, um.” His own face started turning red, but he calmed it with a trick Wereci had taught him. “Nothing happened, right?” @ShadowLord_Lith

Dan woke up somewhere he was definitely not supposed to be. On a floor. He pushed himself to his knees, eyes scrunched shut with a pounding headache to occupy his mind. His wings were thrown out to either side of him, one of them hitting a wall... so that was about how big the room he was in was... Then he opened his eyes, and looked around the room. It was small, and obviously the standard quarters for a resident of the Complex. There was a bed occupying about a fourth of the space, and someone laying on it. Dan unsteadily stood up and walked two steps to the bed. And, laying in it, asleep, was Shae. Ohgodohgodohgodohgod, Dan panicked inwardly, then thought back and tried to remember what happened last night. “You want to sleep on the bed?” Shae asked Dan as they stumbled into Shae’s quarters. ”Nah, I’ll be fine,” Dan said, and fell onto the floor, falling asleep in a half-second. Okay, so nothing had happened, unless his mind was playing tricks on him. Dan sighed, relieved, then shook Shae by the shoulder and said, “Wake up.” @ShadowLord_Lith

“Aw, thanks,” Dan said. “You have a pretty face.” His head felt weird, but good, so he drank some more and looked back at Shae. He does have a nice face, though. @ShadowLord_Lith

“You,” Dan paused as he threw back another shot, “can fight. Pssshh. That seems a little weird. I dunno. You just so tiny.” He reached over and felt the skin of Shae’s arm. “And soft, too. Sisters, did I just that you’re soft?” He laughed and took yet another shot. Oh, hell. Apparently I’m not immune like Dad. Mix between him and Ma? Who cares. “Where’re you from?” @ShadowLord_Lith

“Well,” Dan said, “that might be true, but I’d bet that being a bodyguard is more challenging physically, at least. So, what do you like doing?” @ShadowLord_Lith

“That’s your entire job,” Dan said in a deadpan voice, then laughed. “Okay, I’d kill to do something that easy. Anyways,” he tried to think of a good question to ask, “what’s your family like?” @ShadowLord_Lith

Dan got two more shots and drank them down, then leaned back in his chair and looked over at Shae. "So what do you do, usually, I mean?" @ShadowLord_Lith

"That's the point," Dan said, and got three more shots from the barkeep. He took them even faster this time, and slumped over slightly. It burned, but it was a good burn. Like wind stinging your face as you were flying. He shook his head to clear it, and looked over at Shae. "Just drink. It ain't going to bite." @ShadowLord_Lith

"You've been missing out," Dan muttered, then gestured the barkeep over. "Smallish glass of beer for him," he said to the woman, "and three shots of vodka for me. Yes, I can pay for that." The woman raised her eyebrows, but didn't say anything, just got the drinks out and put them in front of Dan and Shae. Dan slid the glass of beer towards Shae, then tossed back all of the shots in quick succession. @ShadowLord_Lith

Dan picked Shae up, flew over to the doors with a little extra effort, at a low altitude, then put Shae down and walked inside and over to the bar. @ShadowLord_Lith

"Okay, great," Dan said, not showing the smugness he felt. His Tesan half could resist alcohol to an extent that no normal human could manage, so he wasn't worried about getting drunk or a hangover. "Okay, follow me," Dan said, sliding off the table and walking out of the room, through the restricting hallways, barely managing to keep his composure as the walls leaned in on him, then out into the open. He took off over to the nearest door to the mess hall, inside of the dormitory, then realized that Shae would take forever to follow, so he wheeled back around and landed next to Shae. "Can I carry you? Uh, over to that door, I mean." @ShadowLord_Lith

“Well, uh, I’m turning seventeen today, so I thought that we could maybe go to the mess hall and get some drinks?” Dan cocked his head at Shae. “I don’t know anybody else here who is an adult, so, uh, yeah.” @ShadowLord_Lith

“Woah,” Dan said, leaning over and looking at what Shaehad been drawing. “That’s really cool.” He looked at Shae’s face and said, “Is this a bad time? You look really tired.” @ShadowLord_Lith

Dan had already checked and seen that Shae wasn't in in his quarters. He'd checked the high-walled, open chapel. So now he had go to into the school again. Dan walked through the doors of the school and into more complete light, since the sun was setting outside. He padded quickly through the cramped hallways and through the doorway to the art studio, breathing out loudly when the walls stopped feeling like they were falling in on him. He looked around and saw Shae sitting at one of the tables. He walked over to the table next to the one Shae was at and sat on top of it. "Hi," he said to Shae. @ShadowLord_Lith

"Yeah," Dan said, "see you." He waved at Shae, then took off and flew high in the sky, diving and spinning. The air felt wonderful on his face and wings, and he felt the tension from being in the art studio fade away as the air hit his face. He searched the skies with his keen eyes, then looked down at the fields surrounding the Complex and dived when he saw a rabbit out in the open. He plunged for a moment, then spread his wings again just as he grabbed the rabbit, rolling into his fall and holding onto the squirming animal tightly. He stuffed its neck into his mouth and shook his head until he heard a satisfying snap. He sat down and started to eat the small animal. @ShadowLord_Lith

That is also an interesting reaction. Admittedly kind of disturbing. Dan dived faster this time and caught Shae farther from the ground, then landed slower and put Shae back down. "Still okay?" @ShadowLord_Lith

“Okay,” Dan said. “I like diving too, so it’s fun on both ends. Even if it might be more frightening for you, since I’m used to the speed.” Dan picked Shae up again, and it was a bit harder since his arms were a bit more tired, but he still managed to get in the air. He beat his wings until he was a bit higher than before, and dropped Shae again. @ShadowLord_Lith

That is not the reaction I expected. But Dan was okay with that, since it meant that Shae wasn’t mad. Shae’s panting was funny, so Dan laughed again and said, “Yeah, we can do that again when you start sounding like you can breathe again.” He’s not scared. He liked it, for the Sisters’s sake! Well, at least somebody else but me does. Dan’s old boyfriend (his only boyfriend ever, actually) had been scared to death of heights and almost nearly fainted whenever he’d seen Dan flying. That had been extremely annoying, and added to the reasons why Dan had broken up with him. “Are you okay yet?” Dan asked Shae. @ShadowLord_Lith

That was a very violent reaction, Dan thought. That one time I saw that other guy drop that short lady, she wasn’t as scared. Oh, right, I have to catch him. He’s probably going to hate me, but still. He folded his wings in and dropped, faster than Shae because he trying to fall fast with his wings, and banked to catch Shae, slowly, then landed on the ground and set Shae on his feet. Dan grinned, then laughed slightly. “That’s what flying feels like a lot of the time, in case you were wondering.” He waited for Shae to scream at him. @ShadowLord_Lith

Dan thought about for a moment, then said, “Let’s test your fearlessness, shall we?” He beat his wings harder and started to notice the air getting thinner, then stopped at an altitude of maybe two thousand feet high and dropped Shae. @ShadowLord_Lith

“Stars,” Dan said over the faint wind, “are holy. The echoes of light in a dark night. That’s what my father always told me. Mind you, darkness is more holy, as are the moons, but stars are blessings on top of blessings. That’s why I’m not afraid of the dark, you see. Scary things can be beautiful, after all.” @ShadowLord_Lith

“Not as scary as I think is still pretty scary,” Dan said, a grin breaking out onto his face. Since Shae apparently didn’t mind, he allowed the expression to stay. He walked over to Shae and picked the small man up. He didn’t seem to weigh anything, but he was over a foot shorter than Dan, so maybe that was just because of the difference. I can probably fly with him for a while. “Okay,” Dan said, “hold on.” He flicked wings out, then pumped them hard enough that an updraft caught him and carried him up. He angled himself around so that the wind was under his wings, then started soaring upward, barely even conscious of the weigh in his arms. @ShadowLord_Lith
