  1. Amaran has something to say when he drafted Tien. Farming is an honorable calling, but the ability to Soulcast food makes fighting on the Plains paramount. Fighting is also important to the Almighty to take back the Tranquiline Halls. Speaking of which, where does Vorinism teach the Almighty hanns out any way ? Seriously though, why can't they Soulcast bacon??
  2. I don't believe enough attention has been given over to Talendel. Being one of only 2 scenes we KNOW to contain a Herald I believe the discrepancies of it deserve further review.(if this has been noted already, I apologize.) Taln's return to Kholinar has 2 distinct issues I'd like to focus on. #1: Taln's description outside the gates is remarkable. He is soaking wet, his hair is matted, and there are bits of wood and leaves in his beard. There is no mention of a storm that night, in fact the guards are specifically mentioned as being out of the guarhouse for fresh air. Far more telling is the mention of his beard. I imagine little twigs like floatsom on a pond surface. I cannot anywhere recall rockbuds having leaves , only vines, nor do I find mention of rivers or lakes any where save the Pure lake. Shinovar is described as being a verdant green valley. And such greenery requires vast amounts of hydration. #2: Delves much more into theory land, but I've been during to mention it. His Shardblade. Its too simple. Everywhere else they are Masterworks of flowing design. Even Kalak says that the Herald blades are finely wrought weapons. Taln has a long, simple, silver spike. This post has been reported for attempting to skirt the rules man! LoL. My connection to the Shin here is much more tenuous, mainly being that Sveth's blade is the only other deviation from the Shardblades we know. His is shorter, though still q long it's not 6 feet in length, and sharp on both sides instead of one. I understand the Odium-Sveth blade theory, but I thought I'd mention it.
  3. unrelated, but Jasnah Soul-casting the stone into smoke didn't break the focal stone Shardlet. That occurred with lightning on the alley thugs. The smoke DID drain the Storm-light from the gem and she removed it. Which actually raises another interesting question. Did Jasnah not touching the thugs cause additional strain on the smokestone? In relation to the topic. I believe we have plenty of evidence that Storm-light is the power source for Soul-casting. Like lithium batteries. Colloquially, people think the battery is responsible for powering devices, but it's the charge in the acid that it's actually doing it.
  4. I doubt it's the only reference, but I did find 1 reference to 99 Desolations. It was Kabsal when Shallon was fishing for info on fabriels.
  5. Reread Kalak's POV, the reference isn't there. What I did see Crysanja is reference to technology of the time. Bronze spears and ragged hides and leather for foot soldiers. What ever is causing the increase in destruction is unrelated to technology IMO. Nohadon mentions some kind of war/rebellion directly before his Desolation. Roshar is currently more divided than ever before. The Final Desolation has come. THEORY: Divisiveness increases the potency of a Desolation.
  6. I'm relatively sure, that Taravengian has the sphere, he reveals it to Sveth just before leading him to the hospital?
  7. I'll have to check the reference later tonight. It's either Kalak, or Dalinars visions mentioning #99. Maybe even Jasnah...I got a lot of looking to do. To the E reader! @Mad-rand. This is along the same lines I was thinking. Kalak mentions that" the enemy will not remain bound by this. He will find a way around this(Herald abandonment)." Our logic makes sense, except that Odium is some how bound by the Heralds in Damnation...our perhaps the Oathpact?
  8. And given that AoL Is only 150 years or so behind current day technology were still considering tech from the 1980,'1990s. Possibly modern-day. I gotta say, I'm quivering in my little space boots about the idea of a slider d dropping claymore in front of a column of advancing platoons and anti-tank mines under the treads of M1Abrhams tanks. Seriously, Allowmancy takes guerrilla war-fare to a whole nother level.
  9. I didn't read anything from the link that contradicts my statement, so I am correct? Reverse-compounding is responsible for the TLR's Soothing, and such? After all a 10x return on your Feruchemichal investment would make this particularly easy IF you know the trick to it. On aside THANK YOU Kurkistan and Phantom for attempting to educate the non computer literate. Promise I'll try to work this stuff when I'm not on a tablet.
  10. I also read, Distracted, that the Everstorm, the land being destroyed, might be a means of remclaining that Investiture. However it is a theory proposed by our fellow. I would not guarantee that Odium can continue on at this point. Consider Preservation. If an Allowmancer contains more of Preservation's power, then Preservation would grow stronger with the death of each Allowmancer, the Investiture returning. I don't observe this happening, though it may be at odds with Shardic intent causing a different effect. I also wish to inquire about you're knowledge of a 2 series of books, and you're belief that the world has been dominated by evil in another series. not that I doubt you, I merely wish to fill in the gaps of my own knowledge.
  11. I feel the need to apologize if I have misled you. (Tequila is evil) when I say annotations I am refering to the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Some kind soul posted ALL of them somewhere and several of them had references to the Dawn chant specifically. ,BTW Iove the deductions, excellent way of procuring information while informing it is opinion
  12. Why don't they soul cast food, metal, buildings for EVERYONE? There is a limit to fabriels, Soul casters, and gems. Some people have to make due with the old fashion way of actually making things. LOL Old fashioned...anyway soul casting doesn't necessarily break the gem, I think it's just always a possibility. I'M going to have to read WiT on Parshendi everyone is alluding to. Phantom 'o link master. Hook a brother up?
  13. Agreed Phantom. Kaladin finds an Emerald broam and it glows green with storm light. Frankly I forget about the gem frequently as it has . Only 2 mentions in the book. Whatever is causing the glow is due to the gem, and we have no reason to believe at this point that it doesn't go dun.Remember gems can be recharged.
  14. Presumably Cultivation is doing something to hinder Odium, Rayse is the holder BTW, I agree. Now here's the thing though, according to Nohadon, he's(Odium) getting better with every Desolation, doing more damage and killing more people. Why the change of tactics? Either it's working or its not. And if it IS, Honor is dead, why stop attacking a weakened foe? Odium would more likely increase the frequency of Desolations. but the real bitch of Roshar's situation is that I don't see a level playing field like Scadrial's with equal and opposing forces. I don't think there IS a win situation, but a survive situation. Or at least a hold out until help arrives. I'm reminded of Dalinars last vision, and Honor saying it's not just about us you see#points to stars going dark# it's about them as well. I think Tanavast is/was just trying to keep Odium from moving on, a kind of rear-guard action if you will. I read a BS quote somewhere that Odium (has more Investiture in Roshar than he may have wanted), that his magic permeates the planet and leaving Roshar would be very difficult for him now. (Parentheses are my take). This would support the Rear guard theory.
  15. We technically don't even know that it has to be equipped for regular soul casters. We s assume so, because from Shallons POVs fabriels apparently have settings for popping gems in And out. HOWEVER this could just be a convenience issue. I wonder, Szeth and Kaladin don't have to necessarily be making physical contact to use Stormlight, perhaps it's a just a matter of proximity. also cutting gems down to size i.e. just cutting facets, will also produce Chip sized currency. Tangent thought why do the Parshendi beard gems (have Stormlight? Are they weathering the storms in the open?
  16. Apology accepted as itis a failing of my own I wasn't particularly concerned with the length of aDesolation so much as the interval between them. We have "Nohadon" granting us the morsel of eleven years of war. The Honor quote is much more telling, referring to a plan of action on Odium's part. But I'm not ready to get behind it entirely as it is in-world information and BS is notorious for f@¢#ing with us like that. It just seems to me, that you wouldn't try something 99x without trying a different tactic. We have yet to encounter a Shard holder who wasnt reasonably intelligent. Not even a fly runs into the glass 99x without trying something else after all.. I think you're own speculation is similar to mine however i.e. 10 man relay vs. Marathon. Ten guys Sprint faster than 1 guy jogging the whole way. I just can't imagine HOW this interacts with the Heralds/Odium. I mean what is better? A short interval interval between Desolation or a long one? In Nohadons time 9/10 people killed, in Dalinar time, no-one is ready ready for the fight, 9.5/10 dead? Really, what is the win situation for these people?
  17. I don't where everyone pulls these quotes from ,17 th shard link somewhere I'm sure, but I could SWEAR WoB was TLR used Compounding to produce his most dramatic effects. I've also read somewhere that he used REVERSE Compounding of some sort to power his his Allowmancy. Which I assume allowed for his mass Soothing
  18. LoL this thread is seriously of topic. To the task at hand! Has any sort of time frame been established between trilogies? I imagine the Final Empire being like circa 700 AD, trilogy 2 like 2000 AD, and trilogy 3 like 2700 AD. Sazed leaving behind so much info dramatically increased the rate at which science evolved in AoL. Certainly it would have to settle down at some point, but they've got trains, sky scrapers, and mini guns only 3 or 4 hundred years after Vin. Guys, that's less than 2 centuries ago ,technologically speaking, to us. Imagine Operation Iraqi Freedom with Steel Pushers, Sliders, and Soothers...my God, IED hell... Rioting panic in the after math of a nuclear detonation...BS has alot to work with and possible alternate histories. My personal desire is to see human Hemalurgical experimentation take off (ya I'm a twist like that.. ). To date the only things we've seen are the creation of TLR knock offs, but what would happen with 2 charged spikes of pewter and a Zinc Ferring? Or teams of Interpol Tineyes? I'm not even going to wander into future fantasy land
  19. All right that last line got me to laugh out loud.
  20. Ati was once a kind and generous person. Supposedly Shard are attracted to people of similar personality of their own traits. It always bothered me that kind/generous and Ruin don't add up, but a plan to "turn a liability into an asset"? I like this. Up vote for you. My 2¢ on future sight. Honor, who isn't good at it, says looking further into the future is like a shattered window. I think a house of mirrors might be a more adept metaphor. In Ati's case 'every where I look is a monster wearing my face.' It might, just might, make him martyr himself.
  21. Up vote for last line Kurkistan You forgo Sliver though
  22. Hi there! I searched and couldn't find a topic relating to this, but if I'm reposting I apologize in advance. Wit's comments during Taln's reappearance have been bugging me for some time. Taln says "The Desolation has come. It has come, oh God and I have failed." Wit replies ends with" you my friend may have come to late." My understanding is that the Heralds coming marks the beginning of a Desolation. Why then would he be considered late by Cosmere-smart Hoid? My gut feeling says it has to do with the abandonment of Taln. My real question for everyone is how often do Desolations occur? I can't remember where, but I recall reading that they come at regular intervals but are always unexpected. I take that to mean every 50 years (or 100, number is irrelevant) one can occur but not will occur. Ahharetium(sp?) Happened 4500 years ago, and it was #99. Are we to believe this cycloe has been happening for 450 thousand years? The primary difference between Desolation #100 + #99 is the Heralds abandonment. I don't include the KR as I consider them more of an elite fighting force. The Heralds go somewhere between Desolations and elected not to. Die to our ignorance of the Oathpact I am forced to hypothesize that in place of a "relay" with 10 Heralds, Taln pulled an iron man style "marathon" which took much longer than it was supposed to. Possibly giving Odium the needed to prepare a final assault. Thoughts? Tangents?
  23. @Hoser. If memory serves correctly there are 2-3 more quotes about Dawnchant in the annotations. I think Binnut also has a point about people killing at Feverstone. Assuming noone honest survived, keeping with odious acts, the majority of a populace could quite possibly believe that the K.R. caused a massacre for unknown reasons. For instance, you're a soldier in possession of a rare and near omnipotent weapon. You killed for it. You either never being it out, or you come up with a story explaining why you now have a weapon specifically reserved for an honorable cause. My take is the soldier lied.
  24. Dalinar implies at some point that ShardPlate can be repaired with Stormlight/Gems but that it was expensive and the gems usually shatter. I note the term shatter, not break. I would also like to point out Shardbearer, that Jasnah does not use a fabriel but still Soulcasts. Her settings are merely convenient holders; and we should conclude that being attached is not a requisite, but maybe so for normal fabriels. I.e. pain fabriels etc.
  25. Hello fellow board members. Ive been on this site for some time reading different topics, and I'd like to add my 2 cents... sooo, Hi!
