  1. Met my half-sister and her husband for the second time ever yesterday, and they're allies
  2. Maybe we can set up a different thread or PM for in-depth education on queerness, but this one was intended as a space for queer people to just be excited and be themselves. I'm not saying cishet people aren't allowed to post here, but it's not the best place for conversations like these last couple. If we do make another thread for such conversations, though, I will be clear from the outset: the Shard as a whole is not here to debate LGBTQ+ identities, and we will not permit transphobia or homophobia. Anyone who believes that trans, gay, or otherwise queer people are wrong to express themselves, be who they are, and love who they love is not welcome to express that opinion on this website. We firmly support LGBTQ+ people, it is not political to do so, and if anyone reading isn't aware - so does Brandon! Tl;dr if you're [general you] here to learn and grow, cool. If you're anti-LGBT and not interested in changing, the Shard is not for you.
  3. Cis and trans women are the same gender, regardless of what anyone considers. In terms of biological sex, it gets complicated, because 1. physical transitions of varying levels and 2. sex is not black and white in the first place, intersex people exist. I have found that it's often better to speak directly about what you mean - instead of "trans men can't get prostate cancer because they're biologically female/their sex isn't male", "trans men can't get prostate cancer because they don't have a prostate gland". "Biologically female/male" and "sex" have their place, but it's not very relevant to most non-medical conversations. The terms AFAB and AMAB (Assigned Female/Male At Birth) can also be useful to talk about things without making it all about biological sex. Trans people can self-describe themselves and their personal journeys however they like, but for cis people it's generally safest to either stick to what a trans person in the conversation has already used for people like them, or use AFAB/AMAB. (This is my own opinion based on others I have seen and other individual trans people may disagree on the best terminology to use!)
  4. That wasn't Ink5oul, that was the victim, I believe? Who was using all the influencer speak. It was funny, exaggerated but yeah it's all real slang you hear XD
  5. As I think on this more and continue to think it isn't as much a problem with the system itself as the way people use it, I have to throw out - it kind of sounds like people just want a different kind of platform entirely? Which is fine! I use more than one kind of website! But if you want short, fast posts with more engagement, people saying things when they agree, non-anonymous reactions with more variety, and less perceived impetus for a popularity contest - then what you want is Discord. I really like Discord, I find it very useful, and it's a different kind of communication than the Shard tends to naturally encourage. Short posts that don't say much are spammy over here, but less so over there, where conversations usually move in real time. There's a lot of socializing. The forums are a different kind of website. They tend to encourage longer, more thoughtful posts, specific topics that are revived here and there, games, and roleplays. (Though bAcK iN My dAy people wrote longer, slower RP posts that had more content in each one! They go zoom these days. Also a lot more happened in PMs that's seemed to move more to SUs, they were active before but they're thriving even more now.) Quick conversations are better suited for Discord in my opinion, while forums are better for longer-term activities or discussions.
  6. They aren't two separate genders, that's simply not how gender works. I don't need to give it thought because the answer is easy. I don't see a single merit (if you're thinking of "superstraight", that isn't a thing, it's an excuse for people to be transphobic; happy to explain more if needed). In addition to being factually incorrect, it's rhetoric used to harm trans people, and there is nothing good about it. Ben Shapiro is, in my opinion, not a good person; he spreads misinformation and hate. Many of the things he says would get him moderated or outright banned on our platforms. Please don't endorse his beliefs on this website; even the ones that aren't outright political (we discourage politics on the Shard) are often very harmful and against our Code of Conduct in other ways.
  7. Ha, fair. I don't actually know that there is anything common that would prevent someone? Like, double posts and getting spoilers wrong here and there don't disqualify you from staffdom. I guess anything that was done a lot could be a point against you, if you're consistently being careless and not making any effort to change?
  8. Yeah I've been high-key thinking Luck might be a new Power over here. Also yessss hype for Ink5oul, they speak so flatly Yeah I love how the incident reports have had a bunch of more digital stuff! Social media and things. I love epistolary and I'm so excited to see where they go from here. Episode 17:
  9. Hey! Sorry for the delay, I do follow the thread so a tag isn't needed but I take a while to get to notifs sometimes. Oooh hmm. I think kiss RPing - I adore it but commitment is hard, the writing doesn't always come nicely to my brain - marry shipping - I will ship characters (whether romantically, platonically, or various other kinds of relationships) for the rest of my life - and kill Hamilton, sorry Hamilton I love your music but irl you were just some dude so I can justify it. Thanks for the question, that was fun
  10. Salad put it very well, people not thinking that way right now is exactly why these terms are needed - how else will there be space to change?
  11. Hi, welcome to the forums! I'm really glad you had such a good experience books can be so uplifting. I want to let you know, though, that Brandon is unlikely to see this message here - he doesn't frequent the 17th Shard very often at all, and he's more likely to see something like this on reddit, though he's too busy to reply to every fan message himself even there. I'm sure he'd be happy if he knew, though!
  12. This feels more like a culture problem than one inherent to rep for me. I don't think shaming people for upvoting things is a helpful contribution to this discussion. Let's refrain from doing that in the future. For some people it is a contest, or linked to their sense of self-worth - but that's hardly unique to reputation points. People struggling with their mental health have done this for longer than the internet has existed, and will often simply move on to doing it with something else if things change. I know; I've been there in the past, I've felt eager to get more rep because it made teenage me feel accomplished to have Internet Points. If any of the system is kept at all, people will still do this. If none of it is kept, people will still do this based on how much other engagement their posts get. Ultimately it needs to be solved at the root - their mental health stabilizing and finding other means of validation and internal self-worth - which is easier said than done, but I do believe these behaviors aren't problems caused by rep, just ones that react to it. Not everyone sees upvotes the same way as outlined here, either. It's a good way of agreeing with or expressing approval of something without making an entire post; sometimes you just don't have anything significant to say, and don't want to needlessly clutter the thread. I think rep is useful for that. I wouldn't be totally against removing the win the day thing or freezing it or something, or making numbers fully invisible and just titles show if that's possible. We can consider some of the solutions proposed in this thread, it's something to think on. I've been starting to work on a rep title overhaul, so this is one more thing to consider there. I'm not an admin so don't know exactly what our capabilities are, but I believe we do have the ability to add a few different reactions with our own chosen emojis, similar to Discord reactions.
  13. Never too late to reply! The form is still open and will remain so for the foreseeable future, if we close it we'll post about it. 1. There's not a strict requirement for this, it will depend on how long someone's been around, how active they are on both/either platforms, etc. We're not likely to bring someone on the team if they're pretty new, but nothing is set in stone. 2. You can apply regardless, diversity is one of several criteria we're looking for and we are looking for disabled and neurodivergent perspectives as well. 3. No strict requirement here (well, 13 or older, since that's how old you have to be to be on here) though we're more likely to onboard adults. Older minors have joined the team in the past though - I joined at 17 and I think Windrunner joined at 16? he was a minor, anyway - so a high schooler could certainly apply. I would encourage 13-15yos reading this to wait a while.
  14. Hey there! I've moved this thread to the Coppermind subforum; Arcanum is for discussion of the different website Arcanum. I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question, we'll have to wait for a Keeper (Coppermind-specific staff member) to come along, but I'm curious what you're thinking for the vision board? Like collecting character art and artist names?
  15. I've swapped out the tags, but in the future, you have the power to make edits like this yourself! All it needs is an account, you don't have to be an Arcanist.
  16. There was an Alleyverse Church of the Stick (older than that thread), but they fell into inactivity like many guilds did and haven't been a major power anytime recently. (Bit late to this, sorry.)
  17. The thing is, it shouldn't be implied! I'm of the opinion that we shouldn't just default to straight, cisgender, neurotypical/allistic, able-bodied, etc. as the norm. We have these words so that we aren't just saying "non-trans people" or "non-aspec people" all the time - that implies that being queer, neurodivergent/autistic, disabled, etc. is the weird thing, while "normal" people don't need any language to describe themselves because it should be assumed until told otherwise. ^^ this, imo. Any queer person can be in the closet, it's just not being out, whether you know what you are or not. Eggs are specifically trans and don't know (or suspect, but haven't accepted) who they are.
  18. If it makes you feel better, I'm pretty sure all 7,500 were there from the start, they didn't release another thousand later on. There have been no tickets released since that first drop (other than the ones Brandon is trying to fix people who had nonrefundable flights up with).
  19. A thread for The Magnus Protocol, sequel series to The Magnus Archives! I'm thinking for a spoiler policy, full Magnus Archives spoilers, and the most recent, say, two episodes to come out tagged for TMP? That sound good to people? If you're still listening to TMA, a non-spoilery place to liveblog is here. Most recent episodes: I'm really enjoying the show so far, there's been some great horror and also they've kept embracing that vibe of "we're living in a horror podcast, but we're just genre-savvy enough to find some humor". They can do incredibly funny but a bit horrifying at the same time.
  20. gesp i can't believe you forgot italics /lh Ene nodded in thanks and ate a marshmallow off the top of his hot chocolate. "How much do you know about how paradoxes actually function? Beyond just how they present, as contradictions in the world or things that would never happen. Or are extremely unlikely to, anyway."
  21. "Yeah, of course," she said, turning to face him and attempting to make a similar expression. She still held a little Stormlight - somehow she used it more efficiently now - and wasn't physically tired, but...it had been quite the day. She stopped even trying to smile, sure it just looked like a grimace, and nodded toward the hall. "Downstairs?"
  22. This is intentional on Brandon's part and a mistake on Spensa's, originating in Cytonic:
  23. Read this and my first thought was that Sigzil's pansexual or panromantic XD
  24. Yep, reporting just one will let a mod see the bot and ban it, no matter how many it's got or where
