  1. I find this particular death quote fascinating. The person seems to be glimpsing shadesmar and the cryptic while remaining aware of his or her surroundings in the physical realm. So far when Shallan has entered shadesmar she was almost completely cut off from the physical realm.
  2. Ok, I see what your saying. For some of what we know your model makes more sense than mine. But I do have one reason that's keeping me from changing my mind for the time being. Let me try to explain my thinking. As you can see, I added "stonesinew" to Taln's order, because that is one of his nicknames. Since the body focus of talus is rock and stone, stonesinew seems like a combination of those two essences. Edit: maybe you can't see it. I had to shrink the image to get it to the right file size.
  3. That doesn't answer my question. You said cryptics have a different form in the cognitive realm than the physical realm. I don't recall seeing any cryptics at all when Shallan visited shadesmar. I already saw that response. It doesn't work for me. Yes, shard blades have some strange properties when passing through things and so do Spren. To me these strange properties don't seem to be related. This point wasn't meant to be conclusive on its own, just something I thought was worth mentioning.
  4. You must be interpreting the KR table differently than I am, because from my thinking this wouldn't work. Basically, I see each Surge as aligning with an Essence. So zephyr would be the Essence of Gravity, while vapor aligns with Pressure. This would mean that the Windrunners have those two essences, while the next order would have vapor and spark.
  5. Did I miss something? How do cryptics have a form that's only visible in Shadesmar? I don't recall anything like this. Also, spren mimicking objects is a far cry from spren becoming a physical object. Another point is that although spren can appear out of nowhere, they aren't covered in condensation when they appear. No, I think that shardblades are very different from spren. The few similarities are either coincidental or have something to do with Realmatics.
  6. Ok, sorry that was a bit rash. I was on my ipad and didn't want to dig into it too much. Everything sounds ok up to this point: This bit sounds to me like you are trying to finagle your theory into working. No other spren acts like this. All the spren we have seen manifest in the physical realm, but without a significant physical form. Only Syl and the cryptics have actually demonstrated the ability to affect physical objects at all. To say that odiumspren act in such a completely different way is just odd to me. Also, I don't see how counting 10 heartbeats = measuring spren.
  7. The first chasmfiend we see, the one that almost killed, had already pupated according to WOB.
  8. I'm sorry, but this theory makes no sense whatsoever.
  9. Doesn't Kaladin's mom tell him that spren are the nature of change?
  10. I think this is an interesting discussion. I do agree that Kaladin feels the Thrill during that flashback. I don't know whether Honor or Cultivation "hi-jacked" the Thrill, but rather that the Thrill is a result of the Roshar Spiritweb interacting with any innate investiture.
  11. Hmm, interesting theory, Phantom. I like it. EDIT: Could shard of my soul be a reference to something similar to how there are bits of Preservation in people on Scadrial or how there are bits of Endowment in the people on Nalthis? The ardents teach that the Almighty used to dwell in the hearts of men, so I've always taken this to refer to his death/splintering. So yes, it would be similar, but not entirely the same because when Leras died Preservation's power didn't leave the Scadrians.
  12. Did anyone else notice that the shardblade actually cut the creatures instead of burning out their eyes?
  13. Yeah, I'm pretty doubtful of this conclusion myself for that reason. I always took ash as referencing black. Ah, good catch. With these quotes the conclusion I'm coming to is that it's just a pigmentation thing.
  14. I was wondering because all of the quotes Jasnah pulls up regarding the voidbringers seem to point to black and red skin. It might be that the ones with white instead of black are simply too few to have any quotes that mention them survive. Or it could mean that the black ones are voidbringers and the white ones are not. Or that the parsh aren't voidbringers at all since if they were some of the quotes would mention this.
  15. Yeah, Kaladin assumes it's the stormfather but we don't really know.
  16. He is associated eith the attributes of dependable and resourceful. http://coppermind.net/wiki/Ten_Essences I believe Jezrien is the patron of the Windrunners, which Kaladin is on the path to become.
  17. Ok, I see where your going now. It could work. It could aslo pose tactical difficulties. Once the forces of both sides mix on the field, the swordsmen would probably need to mix right in with them to be of any use. On another point, I noticed something in my reread today that I wanted to point out: So we have confirmation that "NCOs" are referred to as citizen officers, and that two of those ranks are squadleader and sergeant. Brightlord Matal is the new captain of the bridge crews after Lamaril's execution, so we have confirmation that captain is a lighteye rank. I stick to my guns in saying that when Dalinar makes Kaladin a captain, he is already promoting him above any other darkeye in his army and taking a political risk to do it.
  18. I just came across a passage in my reread of WoK that confused me. Shallan is reading an account of the expedition that first encountered the Parshendi, which says this: This is the first time I've noticed anything about white parshmen, but apperantly they are common in Alethkar. What significance do you think this has? Any?
  19. I'm currently on a reread, and in one of Kaladin's flashback chapters it is the Weeping, and Kaladin is going through one of his dark moods. I noticed that he describes feeling like the lack of highstorms during the Weeping causes him to feel lethargic. Here's the quote: From chapter 44, emphasis mine. I know that in the Seattle area depression is high, which is often attributed to the rain and grey skies. Is that what's going on with Kaladin, or is there seomething more going on? If this is magical in nature, than that would be a point in favor of him being able to surgebind during storms without gems.
  20. I'm pretty skeptical of the idea that there would be lighteyed grunts working alongside the darkeyed ones, especially if the darkeyed person in charge can't give orderes to them. It seems more likely that spearmen would have some kind of secondary weapon for close combat range. Or that since there are so few swordsmen that spearmen don't need to worry so much about close range, since it's basically spear vs. spear.
  21. I believe Brandon has said that the last 5 books will follow a different story arc and focus on a different set of characters.
  22. I don't think he knows about Hoid. My thought is that this statement is nothing more than Brandon putting in a sense of irony.
  23. It might also have to do the cognitive perception of innocence.
  24. Yes, but this is for people with the soulcasting surge. My impression was that the fabrials need gems attached to the setting for them to work. Of course, soulcasting fabrials are not generally used around laymen unless they have a high rank (I think), so my impression could definitely be wrong.
