  1. I brought it because I have 2 kids with autism, and it's something I started suspecting of Newt almost as soon as the movie started. Many autistics do learn to cope pretty well in social situations. They may still find it difficult to express themselves, or to make eye contact, or have awkward body language and mannerisms. Or not, depending on how well they've learned to cope and how severe their ASD is. Another common sign is highly specialized interests, often coupled with the ability to see the world differently as it relates to that interest. Newt's interest in, and affinity with, magical beasts reminds me somewhat of Temple Grandin. She is a famous autistic who advocates for the humane treatment of cattle prior to slaughter. Based on her unique ability to see how cattle might see, she was able to design corrals that basically lead cattle peaceably to their deaths, without panicing. Autistics also can experience sensory overload from sights, sounds, and sensations that neurotypical people can easily filter out. At the end of the movie when Newt is awkwardly saying farewell to Tina before he gets on the boat (and why doesn't he just apparate back to England?) he hears a foghorn and kind of cringes and turns his head in that direction. Tina doesn't even seem to register the noise. So yeah, I'd say there are plenty of clues pointing in this direction.
  2. Did anyone else get the distinct impression that Newt is autistic? Also, according to Pottermore MACUSA definitely predates the USA and is a completely separate government. so yeah, witches and wizards will follow No-Maj laws out in public, but their own legal proceedings wouldn't follow the same procedures . And there was a small bit of foreshadowing the potion that made everyone forget, but I do agree it still felt a bit unrealistic. So in general I loved the movie, not much I didn't like.
  3. Here's some more WoB from the update: So that's interesting. Would a Shardplate completely dissolve if it's drained of ALL investiture or would it just become inert? Would this be any different ifrom it's KR Plate vs. regular shardbearer Plate. Would a larkin be able to affect a Blade? Nightblood?
  4. Well, in that scene it does appear Szeth saw or sensed Kal... but that scene really doesn't involve Syl directly, so I'm not sure if it's what BWS was referring to.
  5. I can't think of any incident with Syl that is similar to this vision.
  6. Something about the Roshar Spiritweb gives extra power to ideas, creating spren, but.. Emperor's Soul/SH
  7. My theory about Syl's appearance in that scene is that she's trying to look like Shallan. She's jealous of his affection for Shallan.
  8. @Spoolofwhool Sorry for the confusion, the rest of my post after that first bit was a response to the OP rather than to your question.
  9. @Spoolofwhool, yeah you kind of need to read SH to understand what's unusual about this. SH spoilers:
  10. That Reddit WOB is definitely saying Rashek kept the old calendar from before he changed the orbit. I can't think of any other way to interpret that phrase.
  11. Slight nitpick here: The First Ideal does need to be said verbatim
  12. I don't think it's out of character for Kaladin to use a plate. Initially, he's repulsed by Shards, and he thinks the reason he's repulsed is because those Shards were just used to kill most of his squad. Now, that may be partially true for that specific set of shards, but later we see him being offered Shallan's Blade, and he does not have any sense of revulsion. But he is repulsed by every other dead Shardblade he comes in contact with. We can surmise from this that what actually repulses him is some sense of the dead spren trapped inside. I don't recall any instances of him feeling repulsed by Shardplate specifically. If he rejects Shards, it's either a Blade or a complete set. He uses that helmet in the duel without any sense of revulsion. It may be because any sense wasn't noteworthy in the face of the emergency, but I don't think so. So I do think Kaladin will end up using Shardplate at some point.

    Wit

Book 3 of Mistborn TFE? Hoid/Wit is in there.
  14. I'm used to fantasy having mysterious characters with a little too much knowledge popping up at opportune moments...
  15. I've been trolling theoryland for a direct WoB on this, and the best I've found is a direct confirmation that Shallan's memory and the strength of Kaladin's squires are their perks: http://theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=1125#40 The quote you posted from the Annotations makes me think that here, Brandon is indeed talking about using the two powers in unique and useful ways. But the Ars Arcanum is talking about something different, how mixing powers creates a unique effect, and directly compares how this works for Twinborn to the mixing of 2 Surges. The quote posted by @yata in the OP is clearly referring to the same thing.
  16. Very interesting find, @Yata! Now, why would having less powers result in the loss of the perks? Also, does he mean a complete loss or a partial loss? And @Vindicator, these perks have nothing to do with how good you are at using your powers or combining powers in interesting and useful ways. Wax's steel bubble is not his "perk". I seem to recall a WoB saying that Wax's perk has not manifested yet.
  17. I'll weigh in on this topic as well. @Djarskublar, I don't think the first method you mentioned would work. You would essentially be splicing a bunch of Breaths to pieces of human souls that were forcefully ripped from their hosts. This reminds me of Frankenstein's monster, as someone else mentioned. I think this would be even more unstable than Nightblood. And that's even assuming it would work, which I have my doubts about. Hemalurgic charges are keyed to an Identity, similar to how metalminds are. Would the Type IV Entity be able to access these charges? There are 2 WoBs that seem to contradict each other on this. I think the 2nd method is more likely to work. However, I don't think a Returned could survive using their Divine Breath for Awakening.
  18. It sounds like he means that the Heralds never had squires. Good catch on this WoB, have an upvote.
  19. @Eki Oh I forgot about that tidbit from Pattern, that makes perfect sense. As for the original topic... I highly doubt that a KR would bond Odium or a Shadow of Odium. I think it's also unlikely that all 3 Bondsmiths would have bonded the Stormfather. 3 seems like to arbitrary a number for a limit on how many people could bond a powerful spren. If there were only ever 3 Bondsmiths, it seems likely to me that it is because there are 3 spren they can bond to. My theory is that these spren are the Stormfather, Cuschiesh, and the Nightwatcher. The Stormfather is closely related to Honor, and probably always was before becoming his Shadow. The Nightwatcher seems to have a similar relationship to Cultivation. Who knows if Cuschiesh is tied to any of the Shards in a similar way...
  20. Hmm, the broadsheet text was missing right after release on my Kindle book, which I reported in the typo thread. Peter replied and said there was a update to fox this already. I'm pretty sure I updated it then and read the broadsheets on my Kindle book.
  21. Where do we have confirmation that Honor died after the recreance?
  22. It's an interesting theory, and it seems to have some merit to it. However, can someone please explain to me the rotational symmetry in the borders, because I don't see it. Both set's of borders look to me to have the exact same symmetry. If you folded these pages together, the borders would match where the pages meet.
  23. We have a WoB for that: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=1133#89 So it's not just cognitive.
  24. I don't think this is the case. In fact I'm pretty sure the theory has been debunked. This was a theory that I used to espouse which was based on the fact that one definition of Dominion is: 2. the territory of a sovereign or government. I'm trying to remember what BranDon said in response to questions about this theory, but I'm pretty sure he said it's wrong or at least hinted that it wasn't quite right
