Recall Ruin. Imagine what some other Shards in situations like that might do with a steady supply of unconnected investiture...
-
Renarin wants to be a standard Alethi very much, in terms of wanting to follow in Dalinar and Adolin's footsteps as warriors. Sebarial doesn't fit in, and he owns that and makes no bones about it. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens, I just don't want it to, not least because it would be really predictable. The lone merchant in the culture of warriors being a traitor...
-
Nalthians are naturally Invested, so that may make some difference. Same thing could go for the Elantrians based on the nature of the Shaod. I don't want Sebarial to be a Ghostblood, since he's the most prominent example of a non-standard Alethi male we see in the books.

I wouldn't for a second think this is all there is to it. I believe this was already confirmed.

It has the potential to be transported easily to other worlds, and is a nearly unlimited natural resource. We know Breaths can make the trip, but those are unwieldy. If they solve the Connection problem, they could potentially move huge amounts of Investiture around. That alone has a lot of potential applications, as Mistborn proved.
-
Not just that. If fabrials can be used to mix and match other magic systems throughout the Cosmere, the sky is the limit on what the Ghostbloods could achieve.

It's definitely moving in that direction, what with his refusal to abandon Maya for a spren, even though it would make him much more combat effective.

People have gotten into the habit of thinking that Kaladin and Shallan level trauma is the benchmark for Radiancy. If it was, then pretty much no one would be Radiants.

Adolin is too precious for words. Everyone should have a friend like him. That segment between him, Veil and Kaladin really reminded me of a sitcom, though. I really hope that this isn't the last time we see the idea of mental health as an actual medical discipline get floated about. maybe one day, once the Odium problem is solved, kaladin can become the father of modern psychology on Roshar.
-
Well Adolin and Shallan are basically the only people that have Shadesmar experience so sending them makes sense. I do think there is some merit to the idea that they're also sending Adolin because Maya is getting better and they either want to use that to assist in negotiations or to ask for help.

Extremely interesting chapters here. Shallan is doing better than before, since she at least seems to have a firm grasp on who's who inside her head. Kaladin is trying more than before, since I can't imagine Oathbringer Kaladin dating someone. Lyn is a nice girl by all accounts, but dating a subordinate rarely ends well. I laughed at that scene with Hesina and Syl though. Nothing like your female relatives/friends talking about your love life in front of you. The Mink is an intriguing new character, if ever there was a proto Radiant in the making, its him... The fabrial ship is as amazing as advertised, and I love that Navani honoured Bridge Four with the name. The arms race in Roshar is on. I'd really like to see what the singers response to this will be. Seeing this chapter, the idea that Navani will become the new Bondsmith just quadrupled in likelihood in my head.

Maybe Nightwatcher or Sibling is not against being a Blade like the Stormfather is?
-
That was my take as well. Not only does it reflect well on Dalinar as a commanding officer, it also shows that the stable of Windrunners has expanded to the point where Dalinar can feel comfortable doing this. The conversation with Syl and the Stormfather was very enlightening. I think it was foreshadowing some pretty serious divisions among Radiant and spren in terms of what they should expect from each other. I'm looking forward to that conversation, since I hope it'll feed back into fixing the misunderstanding between spren and humans regarding the Rerecreance.

I got Willshaper! Just a percentage point away from being a Lightweaver though.

Speaking of children, I wonder if we''l ever get any more on how the younger parshmen and parshwomen feel about these new changes to their lives...

All of these characters were created to have plots in the story with little page time. Which is fine for them. Adolin has the most page time aside from Dalinar, Shallan and Kaladin. I find it hard to believe a reduction would mean Adolin is still getting a relevance in the plot. Thank you. You're putting words in my mouth. What I said was that less page time = Adolin's relevance to the main plot would decrease because he could not fulfill the role he already has in the story, not anything about "bad" narratives. I'm not assuming anything, I'm working off of what we have seen of Adolin's character already. What new role could he conceivably be given that would allow him to continue with the relevance he has already?
-
Considering the role Adolin has served in the story thus far, I really can't imagine how continuing on without powers will result in him continuing with the amount of page time he has been afforded up until now. I'm really not a fan of this partial bond theory. We already have 3 Radiants with powers outside the norm. In cases where a characters page time would sharply decrease, it's hard to argue against that meaning a loss of relevance to the main story.

Adolin being highprince is a recent development, and we'll have to see what that changes for him. But from what we've seen of his character thus far, I doubt being highprince will mean he won't fight or anything, especially since he's effectively highprince of nothing at the moment. Which is exactly my point. The world needed Dalinar to be a politician, so that's what he became. If the world needs anything from Adolin, it's for him to be a swordsman, and the best way for him to use his world class swordsmanship is to become a Radiant. I do agree with Calderis. If Adolin does not become a Radiant, he'll definitely either be killed or he'll become irrelevant, i.e. lose his pagetime. There's no need to spend pages on Adolin if he's not in the thick of things, and he won't be if he's not a Radiant. Thus far, Brandon has positioned Adolin in situations like Kholinar and Shadesmar, but as the story continues, if Adolin isn't a Radiant, we'll see less and less of him because it would become more and more implausible for him to be in situations like that. Shallan and Jasnah were on the frontlines despite not really being warriors because their status as Radiants gives them things only they can do. Adolin doesn't have that advantage. I don't agree with you, what did I say that gives you the impression I do?
-
Again, I'm not talking about what Adolin sees himself as, or what he enjoys or doesn't enjoy. I'm talking about his profession, what he is actually doing. Adolin is a warrior. He fights for Alethkar as a profession. As I stated, Dalinar stepped back from the frontlines for various reasons, such as being a little long in the tooth for fighting and the fact he is more valuable as a general and politician than as a fighter. Adolin has neither of those reasons. I never said the only thing a person could do during a Desolation is fight, I said that the coalition would be best served by Adolin on the front lines. I also never said that if you fight without powers you'd die. As one of the premier fighters of the coalition, the best use of Adolin's skill is fighting Fused, and only Radiants can do that, ergo Adolin should be a Radiant. A Blade she can barely use. And most of the time she was on the frontlines her activities consisted of using Lightweaving or Soulcasting in a support role, not direct combat. I'll repeat, it's not what he sees his role as, but what he actually does.
-
...We've literally seen Adolin fight in war and kill people as a soldier. He is a warrior. To make it seem like he's an athlete or something is highly disingenious. Dalinar used to be a warrior. He stepped back from the frontlines for a variety of reasons, not least of which was his age. Adolin has none of Dalinar's reasons for stepping back. Adolin is many things, but his role in the story has been as a warrior. From what we've seen of Adolin's character thus far, I cannot imagine him stepping back while he can fight on the frontlines, which is exactly why I believe he should be a Radiant From what we've seen, there are precious few humans on the coalitions side who can fight on Adolin's level, and those are all Radiants already. Shallan is more a spy than a fighter though. Jasnah can fight, but that's not really the role that she has, which is exactly my point. Adolin can do many things, but his role is as a warrior first and foremost. Maybe that can change, like it did with Dalinar, but Adolin isn't there yet. We literally see him turn down a position that would require him to step back from the frontlines.
-
It's not a matter of enjoyment. Adolin is a great fighter in practical situations as well, he's not going to quit fighting because it's not all duels in an arena anymore. What Calderis said was that Adolin will either become a Radiant to better fight, he'll become sidelined, or he'll die. My opinion is that keeping a great warrior like Adolin sidelined is a waste. There are any number of people who could do tactical or background work just as well as Adolin, but a very limited number who can fight as well as he can. Adolin becoming a Radiant is simply logical. More to the point, Ican't imagine Adolin himself being OK with retiring from the frontlines.

What happens between book III and book IV?
Mage of Lirigon replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
Each highprince is responsible for their own army; Dalinar can move them around as Highprince of War, but he's not responsible for them. They aren't slaves. At worst, they sign a contract to forces them to stay for a while, not forever, and it's not like Ialai is in a position to stop them from leaving anyway. Normally true, but everywhere is in desperate need of fighting men right now. His alternative is to continue on, not really on Dalinar's side but following orders for the good of Alethkar. He doesn't like Dalinar, but he'll do that if it works out well for him. Human stupidity is limitless, but it isn't constant. Even a moron is not going do something that's clearly bad for him, for no benefit or reason and for people he doesn't like and who doesn't like him. And I rebutted those with the idea they would recruit her for her intel, to which your response was Shallan has intel too, which doesn't apply to the Sons of Honour. Only Radiant she could become is a Dustbringer, and I highly doubt she'd go out and start fighting Voidbringers. She could join the Diagram too, I guess. The only people that would believe whatever spin she could put on it are the people who would already believe her regardless, so it changes nothing. It's one thing for a highprince to admit he stole from and framed a darkeyed slave. it's another for him to publicly attack not only another highprince, but an allied nation, in front of other allied nations. No way they get away with that totally unscathed.
