Interested in this myself, good to get a recommendation

Seems to have done the trick thanks Chaos

Ah, apologies, perhaps I was unclear. I was actually saying I see the distension working more readily than the tunnelling. Tunnelling would be a cool idea but I can't resolve it with what we know from WoB regarding objects are always in/out. Distension solves the problem neatly, and does not allow for tunnelling (at least under my understanding). So, if for example a bubble was cast outside of a tunnel of some description (let's stick with the train analogy for now). Say, someone on top of a stationary train creates a bubble large enough that it will reach under the carriage (and due to being centered on the caster, the same distance in each direction - this is a pretty big bubble!). We know the train isn't affected, as only one part of one carriage falls inside the bubbles Area of Effect (AoE for you RPG nuts ). Under the notion of tunnelling, we would now have a bubble of fast (or slow) time with a tunnel (the train) running through it. However, if this were possible, this would require that the border of the bubble be re-routed around the train with two 'breaks' (one at either end of where the carriage meets the bubble). My understanding of bubble distension would require that the bubble remain unbroken, so the border, or event horizon of the bubble would have to be 'pushed' out of the way. I guess the best way I can describe this would be like a balloon having something press against it from the outside without actually piercing - it would require a very drastic re-shaping to maintain integrity, and the edges of the bubble would not meet again on the other side of the carriage, creating another zone outside the bubble's AoE. In the case of someone standing atop the carriage, the area directly underneath the carriage would be outside the bubble's AoE due to the bubble distending around the train, rather than the train creating a tunnel through the bubble. I don't know how clear that is. I may have to draw some simple illustrations, this kind of description is something I struggle with. Please let me know if this makes any kind of sense Also, it may well be that your theory of bubble distension actually allows for the edges of the displaced bubble to meet and re-form around the object causing the displacement. Is that the case?

The steel also has to be prepared in the correct ratios for Allomantic purposes and stored correctly. Not that this makes it more expensive than precision guncrafting, but it would close the gap. And don't underestimate the power of supply/demand, competition and economic factors. Still, I feel the primary reasons for a coinshot carrying have been well established above.

Cool, let me know and I'll test for you thanks

I don't know whether distension is correct or not (seems like a better fit for objects passing into/out of a bubble) but I like the idea of the train 'tunnelling' through the bubble, effectively creating a space of normal-time within the bubble rather than distorting the bubble to keep an unbroken event horizon. (For the purposes of this example, imagine a bubble large enough to encompass the cross-section of the carriage, or if you want to get off the train analogy, could also work with a hose). Unfortunately, I don't see this working out too well, as this would require an object (let's say a javelin) passing through the event horizon to be wholly in or out of the bubble (Brandon-confirmed, as an object is ALWAYS wholly in or out) whilst also technically straddling the event horizon. I don't see a way to resolve this conflict easily.

Sorry, should have specified, mobile version of the site specifically. Turns out they do work, but are not highlighted as links, so anytime (url=link)text(/url) is used instead of a full url, I don't see it

I thought it might be useful to gave a topic for this... Anyway, first bug: links in posts don't seem to be working. This may be down to browser or OS, can anyone else confirm? WP8, IE

Consider rifling as well, a buller from a rifled barrel will fly further and more accurately than a coin

Wow, you're in for a slog Windrunner. Personal opinion, the first 5 WoT books are great, then there's a MASSIVE drop off in quality up to and including book 10. Book 11 starts to reverse direction, and 12 and 13 were excellent (14 I've yet to read, waiting for TPB so it matches the rest of my collection ). paperclip, glad to have you here and have another viewpoint for crazy speculation I feel the same about getting in on the ground floor with SA, it's a great place to be (but also frustrating in having to wait between books! D: ) May I ask which pet theory you're referring to?

Heralds, Gavillar, and other TWoK Theories
Senor Feesh replied to Oathbringer's topic in Stormlight Archive
Not to put you down at all, as this is obviously something you've considered in some detail (and I'm loathe to discard anything until we have definitive proof otherwise) but: The heralds and essences have been well discussed and documented. Someone better at forum-fu than I (and not typing one-handed with a baby in their lap) could probably direct you to the relevant threads. In the meantime, have you seen http://coppermind.net/wiki/Herald'>the Coppermind? As for Shallash's absence, you may remember in one of the Interludes, a woman going around smashing statues and destroying paintings that depict Shallash - this is believed by many theorists to be Shallash herself, although the why of her actions is a matter of much debate. The symbols on the inside cover, we actually have Word of Brandon that the large symbols represent the ten Orders of Knights Radiant, whilst each smaller symbol represents one of the powers that Surgebinding can influence (such as Gravity, or Transformation). Each Order of KR had access to two 'Surges', and each Surge is shared by two Orders (as the connecting lines on the diagram show). As for the Glyph-swords, these do indeed correspond to the symbols of the KR, this has also been confirmed. The symbol on the hardcover (under the dustjacket) corresponds to the symbol of the Windrunners, whose powers Kaladin (and for some unknown reason Szeth) currently has access to. Sorry if this comes across as a shooting down; it's just that this is fairly old ground for longer-serving members (I don't even count myself amongst that group; I learned most of this from this forum and the Coppermind too).- 3 replies

Personally, I say yes - I think each of those beads is a representation of a cognitive presence. There are so many of them because every object has a cognitive aspect, even a rock, or a blade of grass. I do wonder though - we know from the map of Shadesmar in the back of the hardcover that the seas and land in Shadesmar are reversed relative to Roshar - so when Shallan visits Shadesmar she's (presumably) in one of the seas (which seem to be made of these cognitive beads). That makes sense to me, as everything on the Rosharian landmass has a cognitive aspect. But in the oceans of Roshar, there's land in Shadesmar. We've yet to see what land in Shadesmar looks like. I wonder if the ocean has a larger cognitive presence (because the ocean is huge) and therefore forms the landmass instead of a tiny bead. But then what of all the life in the ocean - where does their cognitive presence fit it? Also, how does the relationship between objects and bead size even work? Humans would (arguably) have a stronger cognitive presence than a goblet - would we therefore have larger beads? Sorry to go OT, maybe this should be in a new topic...

I'm liking this notion! That creates a neat way to tie together these two observed effects of Realmatics.

How quickly do you lose Stormlight? An inconsistency?
Senor Feesh replied to Havoc's topic in Stormlight Archive
Completely agree with this, and with Cheese Ninja on that Szeth's inability to hold onto Stormlight for long is likely down to his lack of Spren. Also, I think using spoiler tags on any cross-series discussion is just good policy outside the Cosmere Theory board. It's entirely plausible (and I think actually likely, from reading people's into threads) that there are users who arrive here after reading only one of the Cosmere series with a desire to read others. Had someone read this thread who has read WoK but has yet to read WoA, and you'd not included tags, that would have been a major spoiler. So good on you. -
Although the quote doesn't explicitly support it, it makes sense (to me anyway) that Miles would be unable to regrow from the larger segment if the larger segment had no metalminds, as that larger portion of him would not be able to access the stored health necessary to regrow. I think the quote assumed both 'halves' had metalminds in place (which seems fair, given he seems to hide them about or inside his person quite well). Unless of course the soul is able to bridge the gap and take the stored health present in the metalminds attached to the smaller part of Miles' body, and regrow the larger segment that way. However this seems inconsistent with what we know of how regrowing Shardplate works.

Woo! Shout out for Tchaikovsky If you've not read Jim Butcher I'd recommend, I've only read the Dresden Files but I'm reliably informed his fantasy series is excellent. Also, Brent Weeks' Lightbringer is great so far (waiting on book 3). Welcome to the forum

An April Fool over on Reddit has gotten a comment from Brandon, which divulges (I believe) new WoB on the nature of Spren, which confirms some theories (and probably trashes others). http://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/1bflq6/dreamworks_has_acquired_the_film_rights_for_the/

Found it: http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=949#3 Doesn't specifically state about the speed of light; however he does confirm that the same rules of particle physics apply. So whilst planets can have different gravity/rotation/tilt etc., the general rules of physics should still apply (unless overruled by Realmatics).
-
Pretty sure Word of Brandon exists that apart from realmatics, real-world physics apply

Funnily enough, I had a similar thought when writing that post - Preserving desirable things whilst Ruining undesirable - but I suppose one could argue that Cultivation requires more than preservation; you'd actively encourage/promote certain things.
-
I would say complimentary properties rather than shared. For example, ruin wants to destroy, whereas cultivation wants to remove undesirable aspects of things and encourage desirable ones. Ergo, cultivation would be happy to allow ruin to destroy specific things.

Sorry Phantom, I misunderstood your post; I actually agree with you but thought you were arguing that a mistborn WOULD lose their other powers. That said, I didn't know that (according to RPG rules) a misting would lose their original power - I'd have thought that Lerasium alloys would be a way (beyond hemalurgy) to get more than one power without being full mistborn. Would be cool if we could get WoB on this, as I know the RPG has to be game-balanced which might make certain things non-canon. He'd probably RAFO it tho.
