Somewhere in Colorado... Sunset had come, and yet the embers of the house still burned, sending smoke into the darkening sky. Looking at it, one could hardly believe that only the day before it had been a laughing, bustling place. A home of hope, of joy, and of safety. It had been built as a haven for young Radiants, to protect them from Voidbringers and other things that would cause them harm. A Bondsmith had been chosen, to lead and to guide. Guards had been set, to watch and to protect. The Radiants themselves had been trained to withstand enemy onslaughts, if and when they came. Their protections had been extensive, and -in truth- they should have worked. They had superior weaponry with their Shardblades. They had the superior position of a defending a fortified location. And while they were fewer in number than the Voidbringers, they were far more powerful; Voidbringer Fusions were much harder to obtain than the comparative Radiant Oaths, so many never got beyond the first or second. And yet, in the end, they had lost. Despite all the precautions taken, the house had fallen, and all inside were forced to flee. Sure, they might have taken out most of the attackers in the process, but they'd lost. This was something that had never happened before. Many attacks had happened on these safe houses in the past, and some had even caused serious damage (in some cases even killing the Bondsmith), but none of them had succeeded. This battle was the first time that the Voidbringers had won. Ever. And it was all because of one man... *** Thade stood on the soft turf of the lawn, amidst bodies of human and Enlightened alike, and contemplated the battle. It had been fierce; over half of his force had perished, among them some of his greatest friends. He would never see those friends again. And it was all because of him. But even with all that had happened, he still hummed to Joy. Many had died, true, fallen to Radiant Blades or the flames. Most of them hadn't known the true purpose of the battle, and now never would. To them, it was just a battle. But he knew it was much, much more. It had all started three years ago. His memories from back then were spotty, almost non-existent, but he'd been told about what he'd been like. Back then, he'd held the surges of Gravitation and Adhesion - the powers of a Windrunner Radiant. He'd been of the Third Fusion, which, while not the highest level, was rare enough to make him at least minorly important. It was a good life. But he hadn't been satisfied, and he hadn't hidden that fact. His side was losing, after all. He'd spoken to the leaders about it, asking, petitioning, and eventually begging them to do something- anything- to stop them from getting wiped out entirely. The Council had done their best, but in the end nothing had changed. The Enlightened were slowly being driven to extinction, and there was nothing that they could do about it. Thade had tried his hardest, but he was as helpless as the rest. Until, one day, something remarkable happened. It was well known that Sha-thoexis was an Unmade, created specifically for the benefit of the Enlightened. Her effects were well known, too; a blanket of forgetfulness and distraction that hid Voidbringer and Radiant alike in the plain sight of the uninvested. Every Radiant or Enlightened that traveled alone for any length of time was sure to feel her trying to to get in to their head. She couldn't, not unless you let her in; but she was very good at making you want to let her in. And once you did, she would take erase magic from every memory in your head, shatter your bonds, and add a disbelief in Investiture that prevented you from gaining power again. Sha-thoexis's behavior was erratic, though; she took many Radiants, but she also took Enlightened, and she often did strange things like concentrating herself in some arbitrary location. This had bothered Thade. She seemed to be more than just mindless. Shouldn't she be doing more to help them? This disgruntlement had continued up until one day, when Thade had been traveling by himself, he was accosted by Sha-thoexis. No one had been around to witness the attack (and it had been inside his head, anyways) so he didn't know the exact details, but something had happened during that battle that had never happened before. Sha-thoexis had stolen his memories and broken his bond; but then, for some reason, she had replaced it, bonding with him and restoring his Enlightened status. He'd woken up with no memories and pushed back to First Fusion. He'd managed to return to the others safely (he still wasn't exactly sure how), and they had been able to remind him of the knowledge Sha-thoexis had taken. It hadn't taken long for them to figure out who his new bond was. Once they had, they were astonished and a little afraid- but most of all, they were excited. The ranks of the Enlightened had been hoping for a miracle, and this was it. He'd spent the last three years getting used to the power, figuring out how to think in order to influence Sha-thoexis. It had been only recently that he'd felt ready to test them out. He'd tried it out on a couple of lone Radiants at first, and it had sort of worked; but both were ultimately able to resist her influence and escape. They had gotten too good at resisting over the years. That was when he had the idea. If he was failing because his targets were too experience, he needed to fight those less experienced. And who better than a bunch of young, untested Radiants? So they had attacked this house. And, as he'd hoped, they'd won. Fewer had fallen than he’d hoped; managed to avoid giving up- not that it did them much good. They weren’t sure how many had escaped, but it hadn’t been many. They’d gotten five new blades from those who had fallen, but they’d also gotten the dead ones held by the guards, along with their plate- which seemed to be attached to some sort of fabrial. It was more than enough to make up for those they had lost. But, of course, the Blades hadn't been the point. The point had been to see if such an attack could be feasible, if Sha-thoexis could truly be used as a weapon against the Radiants. And it had succeeded. Thade smiled to himself and attuned Excitement. The Radiants had better watch out. Sha-thoexis was coming...

The end of the passage opened up into a larger room. A couch and a table were up against the wall next to the entrance. The rest of the room was filled with all sorts of plants- mostly native plants, but some that looked more like what grew in the rest of the Cosmere. Pheonix's shadowy companion was sitting on the couch- although, really, 'shadowy' was a poor description of what he looked like. His figure could be better defined as an anti-figure; it was defined by what wasn't there. The figure turned to look as Pheonix entered the room, followed by Zeoy. I see you've brought our tail, he said.

Pheonix nodded once. "Ah, of course. A commendable attribute, and one that deserves to be encouraged." With that, he turned and started to head down the entrance passageway. After a few steps he stopped and looked back over his shoulders. "Are you coming inside? My 'shadowy companion' is in the main room; he should be explain things better than I can."

Narrator Pheonix grinned even broader. "Good. Thanks for asking." He pushed off the wall and turned to look directly at her. "Now, what brings you here?"
-
Narrator Pheonix grinned as she opened the door. "Hello! How are you doing on this fine day?"

The pair strode down a street, turned a corner, then went through a door.
