    Neil felt the world shift around him as the Ghostblood lady (Zokora, that was her name) used her power. He took a look at the surroundings; the scattered plants, the splattered furniture, the shattered floor. He bent over and picked up one of the fallen plants- some sort of flower, it looked like- and cupped it in his hands. "You've had your home ripped apart, too, haven't you?" he whispered, eyeing the fragments of pottery on the floor. "Just like we all have."

    Yeah, it depends on the context. On stage directions, for example, italics indicate action. Oh! By emphasis I mean anything that sets text apart from its surroundings. Yes, I see where the misunderstanding was now.

    I'm confused as to what we're arguing over- I think we misunderstand each other. I'm trying to say that (1) you need to emphasize action in some way and (2) asterisks are a way to emphasize text. Do you disagree with either of those statements?

    Xino stroked his chin. "Well, I think it's obvious by now that Silence is in the other Reality. And if he's transferring between Realities, he'll need some sort of gateway. Do you think you could detect something like that, if it existed?"
