  1. With all the talk about the two Shallon chapters today, I have not seen any threads about Dalinar's chapters. Specifically how he is going to force all the monarchs into a highstorm vision and meet with them personally. Here is the quote for reference: I am very interested to see where this goes, how many people he invites, and the reactions of everyone. What do you think will happen?
  2. A while back I made a "secret code" based off the symbols in the Mistborn books. Similar to my Artisan's Script project, I made it before I was on the Shard, and so I have not posted it until now. I finally got some time to make the project more presentable so I could comfortable to post it here. This will be a long post so I will give you the link here first: http://aqanta.com/cosmere/mistborn_code/ The code works converting the text input to ASCII hexadecimal and then substituting one of the 16 allomantic symbols to represent the "numbers" "0-F". So for all you you who don't know what hexadecimal or ASCII is; hexadecimal is a base 16 number system, if you were to count to 30 in it would look like this: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,1A,1B,1C,1D, with 1E being 30. ASCII is basically the way that computers can store information in 1's and 0's. Each "character" (the letter kind, not the book kind) has a decimal (our normal # system) number assigned to it. The character is stored on computer as binary, but ASCII also has hexadecimal numbers (really just the decimal [base 10] number converted into hexadecimal [base 16]) assigned to each character. Hopeful that made sense, if not, hopefully it will make more sense below. The point of this is that I now have a way to represent every letter, or more specifically, every key on your keyboard using just 16 characters. I can then replace the numbers "0-F" with the allomantic or feruchemical symbols. I made the following chart to show the correspondence between the symbols and the numbers. (for those of you wondering, going from 0 to F, in order, the symbols are: Iron, Steel, Tin, Pewter, Zinc, Brass, Copper, Bronze, Cadmium, Bendalloy, Gold, Electrum, Chromium, Nicrosil, Aluminum, and Duralumin) So say I wanted to convert the word "shard" in to the code. I would first consult an ASCII table (just google it) and look up 's'. 's' is 115 in decimal or 73 in hexadecimal. Then we can look at the table above and get the corresponding symbol for "7" (bronze) and "3" (tin). If we continued on with the rest of the word it would look like this: Thus we can see that every one character of English gets translated into 2 of "Mistborn Code". To decode an encrypted message, you would simply to the reverse of the process above; locate the symbol on the chart, get the 2 digit hexadecimal code, then look it up on an ASCII chart. Because of the use of ASCII, most characters (anything on your keyboard, or an ASCII chart) can be translated into this code. While the actual interface to the website is kind-of (ok, very) bland, I have added some very cool features. In the "text" field you enter whatever you want to be translated, there is no upper limit on charters. The type box allows you to choose to use the allomantic or feruchemical symbols, or a mix of both. Going down the site, the next thing is a convert button, you can press it to get some encoded messages, but don't do so just yet! The next two fields allow you to choose a background color for the resulting message/image. I would recommend using white, but other colors are cool too. There is also a checkbox for transparency, use this with caution as it can have some undesirable effects, but can be useful if you want to put an image under the text later. The last field is a number box allowing you to choose how many characters (in this case symbols) are in each horizontal line. Do yourself a favor and only put in even numbers to make translating easier. One of the coolest parts about this project is that, unlike my Artisan's Script, you can right click on the result and save it as an image! Feel free to use this project to start sending you very own Mistborn styled secret messages! I would love to hear the Shard's feedback on this, so please let me know what you think. P.S. I seriously hope that post was not to long and confusing.
  3. I have no idea. I could see him saying that though. I personally loved the written (prose) version much better than the graphic novel (which I thought was confusing and explored less of the world) and so If there was any graphic novels beyond volume 3, I think that a text only/draft version would be very beneficial and pleasant to have.
  4. Here are my favorite theories: The non-fiction is a bit of a stretch, but I think that a Silverlight novella is very plausible. Yes, just yes.. What more can I say. Having read White Sand (the full draft version) I can easily see a squeal to White Sand, though I would be disappointed if it was only released as a graphic novel. I like it, seems like something he would do just for fun. I was kind-of hoping for the dark one, so I am disappointed to see that one nixed. The "never talked about before" probably nixes Warbreaker 2/Nightblood, an Elantris sequel, Alcatraz 6 (really wanted that one), or any other book in tSoS. It could still Silverlight novella, but I am inclined say no to that one too. My best guess is that it is a new book or novella that we probably can't guess. Hopeful a Cosmere work (a short story on Nathalis would be nice).

  7. So my thoughts after skimming through this thread: While no one knows what Brandon is thinking when he reads this thread, he probably meant the story's content to be of some significance. (bolded because I don't think that the scene was only there to show off Shallon's abilities) We have lots of good theories out there, on of them is probably at least half right. ELANTRIS! - finally someone mentions a crossover from a book other than Warbreaker. My first though on the story was the girl was human, and stole something from the Parshendi, but now I think that it could be the other way around (the Parshendi stealing from the humans) White Hair - Could this be the royal locks (I see why everyone is suggesting Warbreaker crossovers now). If I remember correctly, the royal locks turn white with fear, a valid emotion when climbing an impossibly tall ("part of the sky","day to climb") wall for the first time. I like the idea of the heralds being involved. Is the story based in fact? How much is the story based in fact? What actual events lead to the telling/formation of this story and how much does the story differ from the actual event? Is the story foreshadowing for a future event, or a metaphor for character development, as some have suggested? So there is my two cents on the subject.
  8. I think that I am going to re-read all the sample chapter the weekend before the release. Then ,when I get my book at the release party, I will skim through part 1 (look at the heading, pictures, etc.), then read the interludes between parts 1 and 2. Because I value sleep, I will finish the book on Tuesday.

I think that as with his "I will protect those who can not protect themselves" and "I will protect those I hate, so long as it is right" (I wrote both of those from memory so I hope I got them right) the next oath will deal with something Kaladin has a problem with. So I personally think that Kaladin's next oath will be something like "I will let other people protect when I cannot", he seems to have an issue with thinking he is the only one capable of protecting other people. As for any other oaths, I have no idea what they could be.
  13. Good theory! I like it and it makes sense but I don't know if that is were the book is going. What I can see is "Veil" becoming more like an essence mark, having a more fleshed out background story. I just don't think that Shallon permanently becoming Veil would make a good plot element.
  14. Based on what I put here: Oathbringer Word Counts the chapters are around half the length in Oathbringer than in the other SA books. Also with Part One being the "first book" you would think that it would be longer. 12*2 = 24 + (4*2) = 32. So if you add 4 WoK/WoR size chapters to part one (for 16 total) you get 32 chapters in Oathbringer's Part One. WoR has about 17 chapters in each part or 34 Oathbringer sized chapters. So it makes sense for there to be a lot more (20) chapters before the Interludes.
  15. Is anyone else thinking of Legion here? Also I love the idea of Shallan creating more and more identities for herself and then having a serious identity crises. Hopefully one the the lightweaver truths will help here with that. I wonder what personality she will come up with next? And if she will ever tell anyone her secrets?
  16. @shadowwisp Thanks for correcting me, I could not remember if it was "physics" or "magic". But thanks for bringing up the conversation with Kriss, that's what I was going for. Also, it would be interesting to see a lightweaver manipulate radiation (other than light). Makes me wonder what other stuff lightweavers could manipulate?

  18. I remember seeing something that said that, for the most part, the surges are the same between orders, with each order being able to do something "special" by combining the surges. I think that it is kind-of like in Mistborn (specifically era 2) where a twinborn has both powers and can use them fully, but they can also do a little something extra. Ex. Wax can increase his speed when flying through the air but changing his weight (if I remember right).
  19. My thoughts on the chapters without having read any posts: Chapter 10 "Please save us Brightlord Radiant" News of Kaladin is spreading and the people respect and don't hate him (mostly). Also, really Syl, really? And the Kaladin/Shallon thing, I still don't like it or think it will happen. Chapter 11 "The Blackthorn is coming" Dalinar's past is...dark. Why was I not expecting that, after Kaladin and then Shallon...Still I did not see that comming. Overall I liked it till the end. Chapter 12 "Brightking"? Good to know that Dalinar is talking with the monarchs. I can't wait for Lift to show up in Azir and open the Oathgate. Did not expect that queen to be so...well that. We know where the Honnorblade is! Elhokar's moves were unexpected, but probably needed to happen. Also, him and Kaladin going to Kolinar to take the Oathgate? Hope that goes well. Taravangian is up to something, I don't know what, probably diagram stuff.
  20. I agree with @BlackYeti and @Watchcry, I read it as Jasnah was looking for the city to find ancient records (which she was in WoR), and that they had not found any records or anything resembling a library.
