It's a different story if you're reading the name versus meeting them face to face. Like when I first heard of the Alcatraz series I thought Bastille was going to be a dude until I found out that she's a girl. And if you'd never heard of, or seen a picture of, Alice Cooper would you have thought that they were a guy?

I do know plenty of people of Spanish heritage use both gendered names for middle names no matter the gender but I've never heard of anyone naming their son Maria. I've seen it as a unisex name myself so it's never been one that caught me off guard. What did surprise me was learning most people think it's a gender exclusive name, like Bob and Alice.

I pretty much ask because a few months back on deviantart I complimented someone's character and they blocked me for that. Had wondered if anyone had experienced anything as bizarre as that.
-
Take Robin for instance, in England it's strictly a girl only name but everywhere else it's a boy only name. Maria though surprises me because it's just the Spanish way of saying Mary. What do you have that's still one gender only?
-
There's guys named Maria!?

You ever have anyone hate you for anything that just struck you as bizarre to be hated for?

You're forgetting the Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest Poles so there's 8 poles.

Are you a North Pole or a South Pole?

State of mistborn videogame
Draginon replied to king of nowhere's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I was thinking Telltale because they do great games that are about characters and story, something Brandon excels at. That doesn't mean they're the only company who can do justice to Brandon's work, I just don't know all the companies out there since many would try to change the core essence of his works to fit their own ideas. -
Well some cultures and countries are still very gender separate when it comes to names so to the Japanese a boy being called Ichigo is as strange to them as people in the us naming their kid Apple.
-
Here's one: Names that make you go "That's a boy/girl name?" Two significant ones for me are Ichigo and Sissel. The first time I encountered Ichigo was the anime Bleach so I kind of associate it with boys more despite the name meaning strawberry. Sissel just does not sound like a girls name. The first time I encountered it was the game Ghost Trick and when I first heard after that that it was a name for girls and not guys I was just thinking a mental 'what?!' since it sounds like a guy name from a European nation.

And since I wear glasses it's quad vision!

Those matrix ones are me concerning Kingdom Hearts 3

It would've been funny if dancing had been included and trying to imagine trying to do all that at once That's unusual in my book! I can do voluntary double vision which isn't that common when I read up on it.

So would you be Arelon, Teod or Dula before becoming an Elantrian or just born an Elantrian?

I wasn't talking about the black cloud, since it was incredibly obvious like the portal on the Platinum map. I'm talking about a cloud formation in the open ocean portion that wasn't there on the original map that seems to be obscuring something in a similar way to some previous maps obscure locations using clouds, or in the case of B2W2 using ice, since it would be weird for them to make an updated edition, or sequel if it is one, and only making a couple changes after all the previous regions getting significant changes with battle frontiers and other similar locations.

Random Stuff X: Something Weird

if anyone is interested in history -
I'm wondering what's going to be different since the map isn't that different, just a couple beaches, a couple buildings in a couple towns and a ring of volcanic rock around the volcano on the far left island (I forget the names of the islands). But what's interesting is the unusual cloud bank on the bottom of the map that seems to be obscuring something so maybe something happens that causes a fifth island to appear?

Out of all the races and ethnicities Brandon has written, which would you most want to be?

In the Forests. Giant chasm creatures that could eat me aren't my thing (haven't read Shadows yet so I don't know exactly how dangerous Shades are) Would you rather stub your toe and never have the pain end or get stabbed in the eyes with spikes (which could or could not kill you depending on if they're Hemalurgic so you have a 50/50 chance here)

Wasn't really thinking of that story when this idea came to mind, but as far as I recall Quasimodo in the book isn't a very nice person to begin with since he is practically a creepy stalker to Esmeralda, who in the story is closer to being in her teens. I was mostly going off how in fantasy and video games it's always easy to tell who the villains are because they are sharper in appearance (spikes, angles), have dark or unappealing colors (black, red, purple, dark shades of 'good' colors), have demonic appearances (an actual demon, horned headdress) or because their skin color isn't completely white (tattooed with dark colors, brown). I want it where the hero himself wouldn't look out of place in a rouge's gallery of villains and the same with the villain looking like he belongs in a lineup of heroes. The only real difference between these two would just be their personalities, the hero being kind, generous, doesn't let nasty words get to him, would save others without a second thought, while the villain would be angry, save someone if it will help his reputation, belittling, looks after number one. In other words I want a fantasy story where the hero looks like a spawn of hell but the personality of a great person while the villain would be more like Prince Hans from Frozen

Random Stuff X: Something Weird

Been trying to find some footage of The Adventures of Pinocchio YouTube. Harder than it sounds since it's either the whole film (which I'm not wanting) or scenes dubbed. Did find the song What Are We Made Of in English at least The sequel is harder to find stuff for though. -
Got this story idea today. I'd been listening to some Final Fantasy music and was thinking a bit on the backstory made for Chaos in Dissidia and it's expansion pack. Pretty much there would be a hero of legend and an evil legend that would have to face off with each other. The twist would be that the one everyone assumes is the evil is the hero and vice versa. The wording of the prophecy itself would need to be carefully done since it would say how much these two forces would have similar paths presented to them, one taking the path of kindness while the other goes the path of anger. The only reason people make the assumption of who is who would be that the hero himself would have a demonic appearance but would be a sweet and kind person while the evil one would look the part of a hero but would be a total monster inside. It would interesting to show how a hero overcomes prejudice to become the hero no one was expecting and go to show that appearances shouldn't designate whether you're good or evil.

I'm not restricting myself to just the stories done by the Brothers Grimm and just going with fairy tales as a whole (after all American McGee's Grimm did stories like Mulan, Pinocchio and A Christmas Carol). It's just going to be a catchall name for the series, which I'm not sure how many stories would be used. I like twists as well, but it saddens me how most think modernizing means making it like LOTR or a nitty gritty edition. As for the magic, it would depend on the story itself but for the ones listed Cinderella would be the same magic from the fairy tale (I would have the stepmother wonder if he stole the suit and vehicle since magic wouldn't be a well known thing), Beauty and the Beast would be a curse from some magic user of the time period so it would be modernized and Mermaid, since it would be Greek mythology based, would use the magic the Greek gods used.
