What if Dalinar becomes...
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Pezhistory's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well, I'm going off of MBSH stuff, with their orb/contraption that gives you connection to Preservation. That had to do with Kelsier taking up Preservation. I highly suspect that many of the Realmatic laws that govern humans don't apply to Shards, and as such, their status as a Shard would either exempt them from the prerequisite of a connection or give them the connection. -
People you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Voidus's topic in The Alleyverse
So, here are my thoughts on the matter: Theoretically, since Spren are Splinters, and Splinters are practically miniature (or in the case of spren, microscopic) Shards, you should be able to do it. Here are the problems: A. Power-level: Good luck spiking a shard. Just saying, spren can't blast you out of existence. Shards can. You would need the help of another shard to contain the shard in the first place. B. Storage of Power: So, this would depend on what you intend to spike from the Vessel. One of the only useful ones I can think of is their Shard-ness. It might be possible to steal that part of their spiritweb that has to do with their being merged with a Shard. However, there are problems with this part: A. This is a whole different beast from stealing a bond, which means that the mentioned WoB doesn't help much, B. good luck getting a spike big enough to hold that much investiture and C. what would happen to the Shard while you are still getting this massive spike to a new vessel? I suspect that either you'd need to somehow store it in the spike (which would mean that the spike would be so big as to require another shard to manipulate it, or that the Shard just wouldn't have a vessel, and thus risks Splintering itself or going rogue. C. Part of the WoB on this subject talks about places where Spren are more tangible, and this would be where you would need to be to spike the spren. Is there such a place for a vessel? At least, a place where us mere mortal can reach the shard? -

Thanks. Probably better to mention the author than to quote the spoilers. I'll keep that in mind for next time.- 76 replies

Theory: The Evil (Threnody) is a Splinter of Ambition
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to EC11's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Actually, this made me wonder if maybe it's a splinter that is part Odium, part Ambition. -
OK, to begin, I'm about halfway through, so if I'm missing something, that's why. Anyways, Renarin found Gems cut in a specific way to vibrate when infused with stormlight, which is a way the radiants could have created a library that would stand the test of time. Now, I wonder what you would call these? The gemstone library? How about the gemstone archives? WAIT! Stormlight Archives! Literally, an archive powered and accessed by stormlight. And I'm freaking out, because if I'm right (which would really make sense) then that would be a beautiful stroke by Brandon to call the series the Stormlight Archives.

Brandon has talked about how when an Allomancer is burning metal, the metal isn't the investiture, so much as a focus or key used to access Investiture from the Spiritual Realm. So, here is my thought: Would an Allomancer/Feruchemist be able to store the Investiture into a Nicrosil Metalmind as it was flowing through him? And if he were to tap it, would it be just like if here were burning the metal then instead of earlier? Would this make it possible to get the effects of Allomancy a lot faster? Like, tapping twice as fast, so your pewter-enhancement is twice as effective? What about an Elantrian/Feruchemist? If he were to activate an Aon, then start tapping Nicrosil, is it possible that the Investiture that would have been used to create the effect of the Aon would be siphoned into the Metalmind? And if you were to tap this metalmind, would the investiture just sit there, or would it try to act as though you had just activated the Aon? Could you (once again) accelerate or decelerate the effects of the Aon? The same kind of questions could be asked of Surgebinding. To me, the core of the argument would have to do with Kinetic investiture, and whether the investiture ever passes through the body of the Feruchemist. It might be that you can store some of the metals' effects (like Pewter or Gold) because they affect you, and only you, and/or part of other metals' effects (like Copper or Tin), but only those effects directly tied to you (so, hiding your own Allomancy or protecting yourself from Emotional Allomancy, or heightening your sense of pain/touch, but not sight, hearing, etc.). Or you could store an Aon that would heal you, but you couldn't store an Aon that would heal someone else. And finally, what about an Elantrian storing the investiture fueling his body? Could an Elantrian intentionally go into a Shaod state by siphoning the investiture that would make him Elantrian into a Metalmind? If he did so, then tapped the metalmind, would he shine brighter? Or maybe if he spent a month as a Shaod Elantrian, then he'd be able to use the metalmind to spend a month as a normal Elantrian while away from Elantris?

Resonant Frequencies and the Shattered Plains
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Andy92's topic in Cosmere Discussion
SPOILERS: First half of Oathbringer (that's as far as I am right now): The Spoilers don't touch on story points, except for a certain character discovering an ability. It's mostly about some of the stuff we discover about the Radiant and Voidbringer abilities. So read at your own risk. -
People you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Voidus's topic in The Alleyverse
SPOILERS: Mistborn Eras 1 and 2. So, yea, unsure of that one. Maybe we should make a Poll? -
Building on this: Feruchemy stores internal attributes of the Feruchemist. For example, he can store is body heat, his calories, his strength, his memories, his Identity, etc. This would imply to me that he can only store Investiture that is within him or a part of him. For example, you don't see a Feruchemist tapping someone else's strength or speed to fill his metalmind. So, to store the mists, if such a thing is possible at all, he would have to be drawing in the mists. I can see this as potentially having happened if Vin had been a Feruchemist: she might have been able to store the mists as fast as they came, thus avoiding ascension, though it would require an absolutely massive metalmind. Of course, that depends on whether Mists are a form of Investiture that Nicrosil-Feruchemy can store.

People you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Voidus's topic in The Alleyverse
It's easy. Do you want a cookie or an eclair? Same hemalurgic nutritional value, different tastes. Now, eat it, and if you feel something prick you, ignore it. There you go! You've just been spiked recruited! -
What if Dalinar becomes...
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Pezhistory's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So far, there are theories about reconstructing shards, but other than that, you have to have a connection to a vessel-less shard (ergo one where the vessel is dead) that also hasn't developed sapience, then absorb it. -

My misc/oddly specific theories
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Cyanic's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Um, it sounds like the cutting edge of a shardblade is what cuts. So her nails maybe. But remember that the handle of the sword, and the shaft of the spear weren't cutting anything. Shield was just blocking, etc. I also suspect that a "blunt" weapon like a hammer wouldn't have the soul-cutting abilities of a shardblade, though the weight/size thing would still make it an effective weapon. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes a tactic to use when fighting someone in Shardplate. So what I'm saying is that Syl in a physical human for wouldn't just fall through the earth, since her feet wouldn't be a blade. -
Resonant Frequencies and the Shattered Plains
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Andy92's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I've read it recently. And there is a scene where Shallan asks Adolin to attack a rock, proving to here (and showing Kaladin) that the rock was actually a foundation covered with crem. I'm fairly sure this wasn't central enough because it wasn't at the Parshendi home base. So it looks like the entire shattered plains could have had villages and isolated buildings, with the center being more of a city. -
The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
TES is after yes, but do we know that the scene with the Skaze is right after Elantris? I could see Hoid leaving Elantris and sticking around on Sel for another few years, then eventually stealing the moon scepter, try to use it, and only then leave Sel. -
The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
In the Elantris scene where Hoid talk to a Skaze then jumps through the perpendicularity, had he already stolen the Moon Sceptre? Was the Moon Scepter part of his attempt to become an Elantrian? -
Resonant Frequencies and the Shattered Plains
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Andy92's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Which event? If you are talking about Tanavast's death, then I guess that it only has to be after the Recreance, though I suspect that it is very recent. Like, within a couple of decades. The way I see it, Odium might have realized he was getting close to killing Tanavast, so he decided to schedule the Last Desolation after he'd splintered Honor to make his work easier. Also, the visions that Gavilar and Dalinar receive are from Tanavast, through the Stormfather. If Honor died millennia ago, then why did he tell the Stormfather to wait a couple of thousand years to give the visions? If the Stormfather has been giving out the visions for centuries, then you'd think the ardentia would have heard rumors of Tanavast's death. No, I suspect that Gavilar was the first (or maybe second) person to receive the visions and that this was because either he was the first worthy candidate since Tanavast's death, or that Tanavast had died right around then. Either way, it hasn't been thousands of years, let alone hundreds of years. -
theory on trell/set
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Supreme King Z-arc's topic in Cosmere Discussion
If there is anything in Lost Metal that would tell us who Trell is, then it can't be Odium. Why? Because according to the State of the Sanderson The Lost Metal is scheduled to be worked on between SA3 and SA4, and if we see Odium in The Lost Metal, then it would be a spoiler for the SA arc. The way I see it, the fact that Brandon doesn't seem concerned with when The Lord Metal comes out relative to SA tells us that either Trell isn't revealed in Lost Metal, or Trell isn't Odium. So, I'm on the Autonomy boat, for multiple reasons, one of which is that Odium has gotten plenty of action as a super-villain and Brandon can afford to introduce some other Villainous shards at this point in the Cosmere. -
Resonant Frequencies and the Shattered Plains
Brightlord M. Alhstrom replied to Andy92's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Honor's death is relatively recent. And if the shattering of Stormseat was anything remotely recent, then people would know that Stormseat used to be there, and a lot of the Shallan plot for WoR wouldn't make sense.
