What's the most interesting thing about yourself?
Extesian replied to Erunion's topic in General Discussion
I'm with you guys on this. I've never been materialistic but I did like things. And I'm lazy so I sometimes use money to make life easier. But a few years ago (I'm 37 now) I sold a third of my possessions, gave away a third and threw out a third, and moved to Prague with only the bag on my back. A big motivation was to reset my expectations of money and possessions. I loved a glorious life there with not much, and since returning to Australia that mentality hasn't left me. Possessions come and go, but memories and knowledge are three things I care about. For me, now, money is for two things: travel/ experiences, and a future family. -
Yeah @Calderis the musical analogy works better here. When you always play two distinct notes you are always also playing the chord (? I'm not a musician) that represents those two notes. When you're playing a dozen different notes in varying ways, there are too many combinations, not one distinct chord. The disharmony of Melkor.

I agree with Spool. My personal view on the mechanistic reasons is this (and the analogies I’m using aren’t supposed to be exact, but analogies). Investiture is channelled through you and, according to the focus, it takes a particular form (in the way Brandon has described it as like one of those dough machines and the filter you add to make a shape is the focus). When you persistently channel in that one form, the investiture widens that channel and you become a savant. When you persistently use two foci at once (like a surgebinder, or a twinborn) you basically have two channels of a particular shape being used and they end up, in a way, combining, to make a new ‘shape’. That new shape is the resonance and the more you keep using both powers the more that shape becomes a new investiture ‘channel’ and basically a new power. However, when you use many powers at once, many foci, there are too many combinations of ‘shapes’, too many types of ‘filters’ the investiture is channelling through, to create a new defined channel. The various powers stay in their own channels rather than creating a new one, as there’s no dominant single combination. As I said, that’s all analogy and not very refined. I’m curious to hear differing views. But that’s kind of my head-canon for how kinetic investiture creates lasting effects, both in the form of savants and in the form of resonances. That’s why I don’t believe TLR had true resonances. Incidentally @ZenBossanova I don’t believe there is a WoB stating he had some, even small. I’m happy to be proven wrong on that though. But I think the WoB coming to mind is about TLR being a savant of every metal, not having resonances?

Deep ‘neath the mountains of Sel Approacheth a new type of h.ell For Wyrn told no lies Jaddeth will arise And take up his place beside Trell A nightmare created from Breath That brings to the evil swift death. If your thoughts aren’t so pure Avoid the allure Of a black sword, with silver sheath With Honor she ruled many days Til Odium invested in Braize She knew it would d.amn her But brave is our Slammer Her prize was imprisoning Rayse

[OB] Clue to Odium's Imprisonment? (Spoilers)
Extesian replied to Obnoxiousspren's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm starting to wonder if it was an Unmade, given I've recently mostly changed my mind on how long the Unmade have been active and how long ago Aimia was scoured. Not necessarily just an Unmade, but one influencing others perhaps. The scouring of Aimia feels a lot like Odium preparing for the Everstorm. -
And to add to this, I need questions to focus my learnings. I've learnt more about the Cosmere trying to answer other people's questions than through any other means. I'm a researcher at heart so I like a book or WoB reference for EVERYTHING. The process of finding them has made the Cosmere and my reading so much more enjoyable. So no guilt necessary, I love doing it (I've just been busy lately). But I also encourage people to do it themselves, if they want, to share that benefit

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Extesian replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
But... are you having a bad day? If not, NO HUGS FOR YOU Nah I'm joking, have an obligation-free, gratuitous, open-source hug coz sometimes hugs are needed even on good days -
It's extremely subtle, in Shallan's flashback scene where she's youngest and meets Wit. There's a part where Wit (she didn't know his identity at the time) is talking with Shallan's father and drinks a vial of something. As it's ven confirmed that Hoid has used allomancy the universal view is that's the moment. I don't believe there's a WoB giving proper confirmation but it's a safe bet.

Welcome to the Shard @Steven. So a couple of points about how investiture works in magic systems. Each magic system stems from a particular Shard (or more than one Shard) investing their power in a planet, which gives rise to a magic system based on the combination of that Shard’s Intent and the natural rules of the planet itself. Once you are magic user, you can only use the investiture from the Shard that created that system, to power your magic. If you go off-world, generally, you can continue using your magic if you still have access to ‘your’ Shard’s investiture. You cannot power your own magic system by using another Shard’s investiture, without ‘hacking’ the system to enable the different ‘flavour’ of investiture to be used. For example, an allomancer can burn metals on another planet because the metal gives them direct access to Preservation’s investiture, no matter where they are. Magic systems that are end-neutral, that (typically) use investiture internal to the user, can also generally be used anywhere. Breath, for example, can be used to Awaken anywhere, as you are not accessing an external investiture source, you are using your own. The same with feruchemy. Selish magics are different as its Shards’ power is stuck in the cognitive realm, which is location dependent, so even though an Elantrian can worldhop, they can’t access the power of the AonDor from another planet, without hacking it to enable a new source of investiture. Devotion and Dominon’s power cannot be accessed offworld without some other option (an option that comes up in Secret History). Knights Radiant are an unusual case. It is end-positive, and nothing about Honor/Cultivation’s investiture stops it being accessed from another planet. However, that magic is accessed through a spren, and we do know that it is hard to take a spren offworld. Their investiture is somewhat tied to the planet. But if you can get your spren offworld then you can continue to surgebind IF you have access to stormlight. If you have no stormlight, then you need to hack the system to enable it to be fuelled by another source of investiture. If you are a Knight Radiant and want to be an allomancer though, you can’t fake this. Allomancy is genetic (hereditary) and the only way to access the powers is through birth, through lerasium, through hemalurgy or (perhaps) through Southern Scadrian technology. Moral of the story – some magic systems can be used anywhere, particularly end-neutral ones or end-positive ones not from Sel, if you have access to that Shard’s investiture. If you don’t, a hack is required to use different investiture. But either way a magic user traveling to another planet cannot automatically use that planet’s magic system. I hope that helps. It's a quick summary so I haven't used references and a couple of those points could be up for debate, but that's a rough idea.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Extesian replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
You know you're a Sanderfan when you finally get your first heart banner, but it's for a post on the "You know you're a Sanderfan" thread, and you feel the need to go to each of your theories and pat them on the head and tell them they're important and you love them and they have no reason to be jealous, that sometimes the world needs a hero and sometimes that hero isn't the one we expect. You know, the usual. -
Yeah Braize and Ashyn came to my mind with this coz Braize, well, it's like braise. And Ashyn, I figure being so close to the sun there would be volcanic activity. I could believe scadrial as called that after the skaa unless we know it was named that for a couple of thousand years. Yolen we know is simply a dedication to Brandon's hero. Sel, no idea. It's French for salt, old English for great hall, Norwegian for seal. Direct help me Nalthis i still think could have a correction with Nalt, Trell's god- brother from the TLR's time. No idea about the etymology though. That's all i got

Unmaking the Canon - a resource for theorists
Extesian replied to Extesian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It looks like the FAQ Friday answered the automatic splintering question. A vessel can voluntarily give up a Shard and then it can automatically splinter. I see no reason that shouldn't also apply but if people have ideas why that shouldn't be the same. Otherwise i will update the OP -
I assume you've seen @Calderis but the FAQ Friday seems to have answered this, an unheld Shard can automatically splinter. That's specific to the vessel voluntarily releasing it but I can't see why it should be different for death.

From a purely textual basis I don’t think that WoB is authoritative on the question of whether Kaladin’s depression entirely constitutes the cracks in his spiritweb. But I’m also not going to argue with the person who actually asked the question J I will make a couple of points though. Firstly, I think mental illness is not required, but can cause, cracks. However I think it’s only an exacerbating factor. Look at how different main characters have dealt with hardship. Shallan – repressed it, pretended it never happened. Kaladin – depression, self-hatred, inertia. Dalinar – determination to become better, to live life the opposite to how he used to. Each of them had traumatic episodes that could crack a person. But given how differently they all dealt with it, I don’t believe mental illness causes these things. Depression, for example, is sometimes just there, but often it’s a proclivity that only comes out subsequent to a traumatic event. I think Kaladin would have the requisite cracks even if he never developed depression, because of the things that actually happened to him. But I definitely think depression exacerbates it – depression may come from terrible events but then makes it harder to deal with future terrible events, alters your thinking and, in my mind, basically shoves a wedge into the cracks already there and widens them. So I’ll disagree with all of you, or perhaps agree with all of you I think cracks are independent of mental illness, but I definitely think a mental illness will often widen them further, and can almost definitely be the sole cause of cracks in the case of mental illness that doesn’t require trauma to manifest. And yes, I think Kaladin’s mental illness widens his cracks, but I think even if he didn’t have depression, his life would’ve caused those cracks anyway.

It means you can talk with animals!! Nah that's the Robin Hobb stories the oldbloods ruled Alethkar before the current lighteyes. We don't know much about them other than one book reference and a WoB. They tattoo their faces blue. There's a coppermind article on them.
