It is far more likely to be Lime. Lime lights were also a very common fire lit stone that burned on world stages. Being "In the Limelight" was a reference to that. Easy technology development that would be natural to a developing world.

Is Hoid too intrusive a presence in the Stormlight Archive?
1stBondsmith replied to Quiver's topic in Cosmere Discussion
@Wubdor is right about the speed of the reveal. It was years after first Mistborn trilogy that I even cared that there was a Hoid, and I read every book as they came out. At TWoK I figured I needed a reread of all the others to become "Cosmerely Aware". I've had to double read all the books since to pick up on the things I had no idea anyone would plant into books that at the time seemed disassociated. Now I want much more Wit and appreciate Sanderson's better. -
It s mentioned that a person thought it to be ceremonial, but he shows up several places where that is not needed; some with Roshar court member like Jasnah, and others that are not. So costume does not fit the whole bill here.
-
I have Wondered about this for a long time myself. It is not Nightblood, but another sword has gone missing. We were told by a WoB that Hoid did not take the Honorblade of the supposed Taln, but someone did. I wonder if Hoid's is a significant blade, or worn as part of a role to make people think he can hurt them. I think it is a very significant blade, but may not even be from these two worlds. Several prominent people (Nazh, Preservation, and others) are VERY fond of blades. This one probably is beefed up for some specific purpose, but I have no idea what yet.

Could The Nahel Bond Be Insidious? (WoR Back Cover)
1stBondsmith replied to Subvisual Haze's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It would seem to me that all of them wanting to quit is still rather unexplainable. There must have been a stronger motive than, "Hey, we are all addicted to this power and control thing. Lets all quit!" I strongly believe that there is a more honorable (pun very intended) reason for the Recreance, and that when we learn it we will also argue about whether they should have quit, as they did, or been wiser and trusted the spren. That also could go either way, but we won't know till we find out why they decided to do it together, and at that time. -
Really weird observation from BoM [BoM spoiler]
1stBondsmith replied to Capt. Goradel's topic in Mistborn
Agreed. There is no way around that...unless it is one of the powers that he gained later, (but I don't think that is what Brandon said). Like I said. But I enjoy the speculation on the worldhopper side. -
Dalinar is the only one with enough status to unite both the blossoming Knights Radiant, and probably what is left of the royalty on Roshar not ruled by Taravangian. His directive, "To unite them" seems only achievable if he has a role in keeping the peace between them. Look for this in the role of Bondsmith in SA3. I don't have inside information, but I have a big hint I referenced in my greeting on the welcome page. I think Bondsmiths keep everyone in order for the Knights, and may even focus their efforts or strategies. Who better than Dalinar?

Really weird observation from BoM [BoM spoiler]
1stBondsmith replied to Capt. Goradel's topic in Mistborn
Hmmmm...Following that line of thought; Wax got the coppermind from the coin from none other than Hoid, the Worldhopper(Singer, etc.); Hoid is a practitioner of lightweaving, so can appear like anyone he wants; Hoid can travel to whatever part of the world he want (or argue he needs to be). So what if Hoid has the ulterior motive of having everyone survive, and provides them the motivation to do it, but now takes the opportunity to do it looking like Kelsier, thus keeping the heat off of himself? Would deceiving everone about this be something Hoid would do. Would BS love to throw us off this way? This is not an argument that Kelsier did not. That is the most likely answer. But this is not beyond Brandon's there is always another secret mantra nor his misdirection talent. Hoid helping, but not interfering, and looking like someone else did it is his modus operandi. -
I guess i am a literalist in what Dalinar saw. I think that is why Dust Bringers hate being called by that name, due to it being too much like what was thrown against them in the previous Desolations. Also, I think that even more than Ruin's desire that all should end in it's entropic conclusion, the Hate of a trapped God would bring the complete devastation to the offending world-- dust swirling into the void. I guess we shall see, but the horror of the vision is what focused Dalinar on the possibility of fighting Odium. I think I'll stick with it till I get something else as a better hint.
-
All the visions Dalinar sees has the end result of the Odium/Everstorm being the world turned to dust and there being only a void left (likely why the opposition is called Voidbringers). That is not a "Hunker down and 10% live" scenario. It is the end of the world, as we know it. (or as anybody else does!) It won't matter who was there first or who kills them. It will be the end. That is worth opposing and What Dalinar is working towards. That is what he has sworn to oppose. But just like Kesier saw a God die, Dalinar says, if Honor can be Killed, so can what killed Him. I think anything else other than survival of the world is getting too deep in the weeds about loyalty to a shard nobody knows, and nobody feels loyalty to. There is no religion of Cultivation. Heck, they are just learning about spren! I think the motives are a lot more simple than the forum as a whole are making them (possibly the over analyzing Brandon accuses us of).
-
@BlackYeti , I think that there are symmetries about the glyphs, but I don't think that the spren have related symmetries. What I was excited about was seeing a spren with spiritual dimensions as well as cognitive. Still have no clue about the lines between Orders. But the languages they use (at least in writing) seem to have some repeatable patterns. I think that is about as far as I go now.

@Spoolofwhool makes two very good arguments. Namely, Why would they suddenly give up bonds, when nothing bad had happened for many more centuries than before? And that there were Desolations without the Knight Radiant. Kind of good proof that they were not causing them, and kind of easily accessed information by the Knights of the time. "Oathpact- it's gonna' be big!". I agree that this is what limits Oduim in the past, and whatever part is still in effect is what will bring the climax of the Archives.

Could The Nahel Bond Be Insidious? (WoR Back Cover)
1stBondsmith replied to Subvisual Haze's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well spoken! Have an upvote for insight and articulation. Hmmm...This might put a different spin on the Stormfather's reluctance to make new Knights, or to Change the forms of the Listeners. Not just a bitter spren, but knowing what price it will exact of the humans later. It is hard to say which is worse, having the breaking of our spirit remain, or hanving a patch which might lead you to do differently than you would want. Who would trade becoming a superhero for less individual control? Quite an exchange. I think I agree with most of what you wrote. The only reservation I have about going all in is, to what extent is following ideals a lack of individual will? and what will that make them susceptible to later? Can a person act with total free will because the oaths are part of who they are, and not limited by them? I have made oaths of this very kind. I made them of my free will, and will keep them by my free will. I am not limited, I have just articulated what I will do based on a principle or moral value. There is enough information now to make your theory very likely. I like it, but holding back just a little to see further down the road. It could be that seeking the Radiant powers brings the voidbringers power as well. We will have to see. -
Thank you for the abbreviations. Anyone else know what XD stands for? So if the Oathpact is STILL not broken at the end of WoR. I wonder what is up. That they all thought leaving the blades would end it is still very significant, but I wonder what other parts are still in effect. Can't wait to find out.

OK, this has been throwing e off long enough: What are IIRC, XD, and IRL supposed to mean? I am not up on all the texting abbreviations. If I remember reading them right, I thought the Admins said "we are all readers here", so abbreviations for non subject words was discouraged. I keep running into them and I misinterpret the intention of the post. Screaming is not a logic gate for "so it must be an Honorblade". Just a hint maybe. The only indication that he may have, is that he does not have his Honorblade any more, after arriving with it. It must be intolerably difficult to take a blade that disappears when the owner dies. I think it must have been given away. This is how the other Heralds ended their oathpact participation, so I think it is safe to say Taln did it the same way. He may have been crazy, tricked, or something else, but I think the honorblade must be given away or the owner must die for it to be left. P.S. Just remembered that there is a WoB saying that the Honorblades do not reappear when the owner dies. If this is true, where did they go in the past during Desolations when Heralds died? How did the Heralds get them back upon returning? Will we have some very surprised Stone Shamans and Truthless later?

I thought that is what I said. So He was still in tact when he arrived, but not with his blade later when he appeared more mad and broken. I suppose this was the last link to his crumbling sanity. Wouldn't it be crazy if all the shades Silence sees are past Radiants stuck in the Oathpact! I don't think Szeth goes to Damnation because he is not a Herald. And the Heralds seem immortal even without the blades, so I think the bond there is different that what spren do. I think the spren saw that a bond could be made (We do not know if Honorblades are sentient like shard blade spren are, so there is a big difference there if not). We don't have any examples of sentience in the Honorblades, but that doesn't mean there isn't. Vasher did make Nightblood after seeing the things on Roshar, so maybe your theory is sound. I think I will wait till we have some evidence of sentient Honorblades before I equivalate the spren bond to accidentally participating in the Oathpact.

Anticipated Orders (Orders you are interested in)
1stBondsmith replied to Xaklys's topic in Stormlight Archive
Hard to believe, but Bondsmiths carry my vote. We have no clue what they do. What do they bond? Can they unbond? What powers do they bring; and if they can unbind, are they the Administration of the KR? Why would a mortal without powers be afraid of a Bondsmith? Too Many Secrets!- 26 replies

We are crazy (as my wife keeps reminding me). Welcome to the Sanderson Looney Bin @Silanda ! I hadn't considered the link to Glys's form. Wow! What would that be in a new dimension? I am really hoping that the next book delves into the Bondsmith link, and we get more of the spiritual realm, since it is the realm we see the least. I'll bet nickles we get a new Surgebinding map. Wouldn't that be awesome! Frankly I think @BlackYeti has one of the most significant finds in years with this theory.

I really like your thinking on this part. The Honorblades do appear to be the token or key to participation in the Oathpact. This being the case, the original 9 who left the blades are out, Stonesinew is the only one left. So when he reappears, sword in hand, is he broken? We don't know for sure, but I think (lower case) so. Then he is discovered nearly mad, AND WITHOUT HIS BLADE, but carrying a shardblade. Was it taken from him, or did he yield it u? thus shattering the oathpact. Hoid seems to think that that was the indication of the word "pissing itself", so I think it is the end of the Oathpact. As for the spren copying the bond... they did, but I don't think participation in the oathpact is voluntary or possible, since Szeth is not part of it, neither could the KR join (with or without knowing about the consequences). This did make me think of something else. With such a strong bond to the blades (strong enough that the Nahel bond is an imitation only), this bonding with Honor (we have to assume since they are the Honorblades), would seem a good reason for the assumed shattered mental capacity of the Heralds. Just as spren lose memory and consciousness when the bond is broken, the Heralds also loose some when there bond is broken. A madness (screaming comes to mind) remains, still tied somewhat to the blades. Did not Szeth hear screaming when he used his blade? Would not such a blade, with such power seem a curing to the Stone Shamans who protect the blades? Would not one who weilds these, and must be ultimately subject to the master of a Stone also be considered of the lowest status? And would that not over time reduce the users of swords to a low rank? So can the Bonds with the Honorblade and the Heralds be remade, or has that ship sailed? Nahel Bonds can, apparently. What good in the larger fight against Odium would partial use blades be? Since the Heralds are functionally immortal, I see us needing them back, now that the last one has abandoned the Pact.

Good Questions: If only one knight did this, or only separately, it is only hurting their own spren. If it is done together (alright everyone, on three...) all are part of it and they make sure everyone does it. This could also be related to the subterfuge an order continued at the expense of the others (theory that there is at least some order members left discussed on other threads). How many of us know what happened thousands of years ago? This happens in all books with long histories, and Brandon delights in making these mis-information that everyone believes in his stories. Also, then the Ardents took over, they did not want the truth to come out, and rewrote the histories. This is according to Jasnah's research and notes. (Also a but of the Ars Arcanum). I think either the Stone Shamans, Nalan, or someone in the secret groups does know. And It would appears that Taravangian knows. No clue here. We need to know lots more about the Oathpact and Oduim's binding. But we do know from Syl and Glys that the spren that are coming to bond did so without permission from the ruling (Spren). -"not supposed to come here", -committee decided to send me", etc. Something has changed, and I think things are breaking down. Probalby has to do with Taln's return and his giving into madness from the torture for so long. No idea. We haven't been given enough clues yet.

Wouldn't it be just like Brandon to have this information be only a half truth, thus, the KR did what they thought was best, but what would eventually lead to Oduim's victory. I lie given to the world early, acted upon, and then, mellenia later, the truth comes out (in book 9 or 10!).

One of the Diagram writings said to keep back the information that destroyed the Radiants, as it could be used again in the future. I think this was the knowledge of the Oathpact dilemma that the old Radiants decided needed the Receance to resolve. No matter how many times they beat Odium, as long as the powers were used by them, he could as well. Really just my speculation, but I like it.

WoW! That was both deep and insightful; all while on the Bus! I like the depth behind the splitting, and I like the explanation of why. I don't feel that this is the direction Brandon went. I think Syl was right when she said that the spren were killed by the knights breaking the bond. The Stormfather's anger against men is an evidence of this. We don't have any information that the spren or their power slowed down or lessened before the Recreance, and in fact were being used in a battle at the exact time it happened. now I'll expose myself to ridicule and share my idea. I think that they all killed off their spren to eliminate the bonds that were half of whatever Honor bound Odium with. Some deal was made in the Oathpact, involving the Heralds, that allowed powers to the Radiants, and their enemies. I still keep the belief that the KR did it nobly to end the invasions by Oduim's forces. I think they may have been lied to, or they were right, and having the powers back to men allows Odium to do the same with his forces. I think it was awful to spren and was intended to save mankind.

[Cosmere Spoilers] What to make of the Unmade?
1stBondsmith replied to 1stBondsmith's topic in Stormlight Archive
I appreciate your patience with me @PallonianFire, I was headed more toward what @Yata just posted. I am positing they were a spren (Investiture from Adonalsium or Cultivation or Honor, or a combination) originally, and that Odium's investiture was added/tainted/modified these original, self-aware investiture we call spren. There is precedence of this given, and some hinted at with other beings. But I happily acknowledge that this may be a bridge too far and that the other may just be the case. There is a lot of information there about them that seems they could be older. If I guess wrong, I happily embrace the correction you provided. -
I agree with this pet theory too. Too much circumstantial evidence not to be true about the kindgoms, cities and Heralds. I also like the Link to the dustbringers. Seems they would be great at making an underground inverted pyramid. The symbol meaning connection...hmmmright now it is as good a guess as any. Have an upvote for creativity. The generality of the locations makes me shy away from it being a just a travel connection location (Frostlands doesn't have much out there). Ship to the city seems real thin. I got nothing better. My first place theory is they are in fact connection points, but to the cognitive realm. I wonder if Jasnah last appeared at a spot with a Rose on the map? Could these be potential crossing points? That would mean they had to include oathgate cities and Urithiru, but would include a great deal more. This would also seem right with the fact that Shallan made her first jump to Shadesmar from here, and connection places where others have seen spren also had this symbol (The King at the shattered plains sees the Symbol Heads. Jasnah sees them at Kholinar, others?) Made me think, if the drawing of Karbranth was old enough to have connection to dustbringers and an oathgate, Jasnah may have been checking out whether it was locked or not, and not just researching. She told Shallan she knew all of them were locked, except one, so she knew what to look for.
