Did Hoid bring Nightblood to Roshar?
Spoolofwhool replied to Necromancer's topic in Stormlight Archive
His sword as King's Wit isn't anything special, just something all Wits hold symbolically. -
Personally I think Szeth's oathstone was just a regular stone to symbolizes his master since some of what Nale says at the end implies that Szeth stayed on his path under his own volition, and that the choice to break his oath as Truthless was within his power.

The Recreance occurred after the Last Desolation, so at that point common belief was that humankind had one and the Desolations were over. Granted, it is possible that the KR learned that the Last Desolation was a lie.

I was under the impression that the prophecies listed the Hero of Ages for two things. Firstly, they would be the ones who would use the Well to fix the world and reinforce Ruin's prison every 1000 years, and secondly the last one would be the one who took up the power of both shards to save the world. That's why Alendi was called the Hero of Ages as well, because he was chosen to take up the Well's power.

No, that's the calculation for the volume of air required to create a Shardblade, as you proposed. The amount of energy, in terms of volume of air, with an assumed temperature, heat capacity and mass of Shardblade. The soulcasting example doesn't work since we know the energy to induce the transformation is coming from stormlight in the gems, so there's no need for it to draw energy from the ambient temperature. A similar soulcasting into metal with Shardblade summoning using ambient temperature likely isn't occurring since no one ever observes an inward suction when the blade appears, one which would be obvious due to the mist. Edit: Also, 500 billion is 5 E 11, which is three magnitudes lower than what I calculated.

If that's the case though, then why hasn't Odium had a champion yet? Honor makes it sound like convincing Odium to take a champion would be the first time he has done it. Also, if said champions of Odium are on the same level of the Heralds, why aren't they still around?

how was aimia invaded in the first place?
Spoolofwhool replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
To be fair, poachers probably have the same sentiment when their animals die, and they're the cause of it. -
Right.... Tell that to the poor chull who "donated" the attribute.

Is Breeze A Good Manipulator ... Or Just Full of Air?
Spoolofwhool replied to aeromancer's topic in Mistborn
I think you're underselling what he achieved immensely. He managed to change the mindset of a people which had been downbeaten for centuries, whose every previous rebellion attempt had ended with utter defeat, and which was constantly being depressed with allomancy. That he managed to make it so that Kelsier could convince the number that he did is impressive. You make it sound like a master manipulator could've somehow magically turned the entire skaa population against TLR, and I disagree. A feat of that magnitude would be impossible in all honesty. Raising the army that he did was impressive. Also, I'm going to go back and change my earlier response. I do think that Breeze is an excellent manipulator. He can read people very well and can apply the precise amounts of changes to move them in a direction they wouldn't normally without them realizing. While he doesn't do big changes, which by all accounts seems to be what you would do, the small stuff he does do doesn't undercut his ability. Neither does his unwillingness to use his power. Besides, without Breeze manipulating them, chances are good the team would've given up long before they reached their goal. We're not saying that manipulation isn't how you defined it, but rather that the scope of your definition is too limited.- 11 replies

I know about ascending it if you become a savant for it. However, I'm more thinking along the lines of a very spread out ingestion, like once a week or once a month. Nowhere near enough for ascension as the majority of the power would leak out of you in the intervening time, but it would still continue to strength your connection to Preservation. I was just wondering if there was a limit to how strong that connection could be. Also, the way I'm seeing ascension using lerasium is that you swallow a whole bunch and burn it all at the same time, with the giant influx of investiture released being similar to what happens when you're in the Well of Ascension, ascending you for a moment, until the power is depleted.

[Theory]Reason why Odium can Splinter other Shards
Spoolofwhool replied to Temerius's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah, the connecting to the Well so that he could persist created a permanent connection to the world and the power both Ruin and Preservation had invested into him, but his actions were also very ruinous. I believe it was said that he was essentially an agent of Ruin for a large portion of his time. Killing TLR was part of it, but other setups, like with his allomancy teacher and the 11th metal, were all setup by Ruin.- 25 replies

There's a WoB that if Vin ate a bead, she would become a stronger mistborn. I presume there is an upper limit.

[Theory]Reason why Odium can Splinter other Shards
Spoolofwhool replied to Temerius's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I could be wrong, but I remember it being observed by Leras that he wouldn't be able to take up Preservation because he was also connected to Ruin through the Well of Ascension, because of how he connected to it. So while being connected to the Well would've been a huge help, the hindrance of his connection to Ruin held him too far back. Probsbly related back to the general principle that different types of investiture interfere.- 25 replies

I was under the impression that lerasium turning people into allomancers was just a side effect, not its actual allomantic effect.

The way I see it is that the matter to create the sprenblades is not being formed from surrounding energy, but rather from the physical manifestation of the spren's investiture into a metal. So there isn't really a need to draw energy from the air. Also, looking at the actual math, if all the energy was from the air, it would take around of 5E14 m^3* of air. Therefore, since it has to be pulling most of the source of the matter from somewhere other than the ambient energy, it would follow that it would pull all of it. Nonetheless, I do agree that the mist is a result of the metal forming. I guess that it has to do with the transition of investiture from the cognitive to the physical. Mistborn spoilers: *Calculations were performed for dry air at around 21 C. Since higher humidity air would have a greater heat capacity, the actual amount would probably be a bit lower, though it wouldn't change by more than a magniture. Also was assumed that the mass of a shardblade is around 2 kg. Probably a bit different, but the actual mass wouldn't change the amount by more than one magnitude.

[Theory]Reason why Odium can Splinter other Shards
Spoolofwhool replied to Temerius's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Kelsier and the Ire aren't a very good example about people needing a connection to a shard to ascend it since it seems to me more like their issue was that they already had a connection to another shard and it was interfering. I don't think lack of connection can affect your ability to take up a shard too much, but connection to another shard can be a lot more preventative.- 25 replies

A worldhopper could've caused it, but we have some sources which state that the Dor is really unstable and it's causing some weird things with Sel's land. Apparently the land itself is becoming invested and it's causing it to be sentient.
-
It's probably like their bodies are shifted into a sort of stasis while they're changed by the power of the Dor. The broken connection however didn't give them enough power to complete the transformation, just make it to the prep step.

I found it was better than Star Wars 7, but it wasn't that amazing. There were some nice point, but many holes which I didn't care for, mainly small things which broke the realism. The big thing: The hyperjump while they were near the planet. That's fairly universe-breaking enough that it killed the moment for me. List of small things:

Why does Elhokar's eye change colors multiple times?

Which merchants? Rysn and her babsk? They didn't have incredible technology, just fabrials.

Why does Elhokar's eye change colors multiple times?
Spoolofwhool replied to Paladin Brewer's topic in Stormlight Archive
Roshar genetics are a bit different than ours. Exhibit A: Adolin has blond strands of hair and black strands of hair because his mother was blond and his father has dark hair. In our world, he would just have one uniform colour. Exhibit B: The bastard son of the king of Jah Keved is the child of a lighteyes and a darkeyes, and has a lighteye and a darkeye. -
I'm of the opinion that the spren are still always in the cognitive realm except when they're manifested as shardblades. Bonding to a KR allows them to approach the physical realm, just like how Lift is closer to the cognitive realm, but they are still cognitive entities in the cognitive realm.
