I don't hate Gene Wolfe. I think I am not smart enough to understand what he is trying to say. He just isn't my thing.
-
I feel the same way about Gene Wolfe so while I disagree I do understand how that feels.

@Orlion On a Cob there is also Bradbury Stories 100 of his most celebrated Tales. There is not a overlap between this book and the Everyman publication we have been talking about. The other collection is stronger, but this one also has some real gems.

Its been out since 2010. It includes all of his most famous stories. Yes get it immediately!

So I am not sure if anyone else will post on this topic, but I wanted to create a place where if you feel really strongly about a particular translation of a book you could post it here and say why. Readers are often presented with many different translations of a book and it can make a HUGE difference on how much one enjoys the book. I have 2 I feel strongly about. War and Peace translated by Briggs. This is one of my all time favorite books. Most people will recommend the Volkhonsky Pevear translation, but it is just a awkward translation for me. They are too literal with the Russian and it does not flow well. Briggs does a great job finding that balance. Count of Monte Cristo by Buss. I think it is the only modern unabridged translation out there. I have read parts of other translations and Buss stands heads and shoulders above in my opinion.

If you want a really good short story collections I have a couple of suggestions: My favorite is The Stories of Ray Bradbury. Its about 1,000 pgs and published by everyman's library. Bradbury shows a lot of range moving from comedic, horror and science fiction really well. Another really good one is Galactic Empires edited by Neal Clarke. It came out earlier this year and each story is set in a galactic empire of some sort. It even has the Brandon Sanderson story Firstborn (it was a fun story that was a kind of subversion of Ender's game).

Have you read many H.P lovecraft stories? I have read several of them...he reminds me a little of Sir Walter Scott; they have great ideas , but use way too many words to get them across. Call of Cthulhu is lovecrafts most popular story if you want a stronger one.

Daniel Abrahams- Dagger and Coin Series 5 books and completed. Janes S.A. Corey-The Expanse series 6 of 9 published. Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher

@AngelEy3 In regards to your questions I will not spoil you by answering them, but I can tell you when some of them will be revealed. The question about crowd and coltain's soul is in Return of the Crimson Guard by Esslemont. The question about the raging fountains of blood is in House of Chains. Does mappo betry his friend. I'm not positive, but I think that one is in The Bonehunters.

I know right? Its like Ernest Cline wrote a sad parady of Ready Player One.
-
Wait until you get to books 6-10. I think all of those are 1/3 longer than MoI
-
I know the question was directed elsewhere, but I have read it and thought it was great. It was a "popcorn" read so dont take it too seriously; tons of fun though.

The Mhybe? I hear fans complain about it, but I thought "The Snake" and "Ghost" story in DoD were far less compelling. Did you pay attention to the Tano Spirit walker in DG? Also this prophesy in ch 2 of DG, "Two fountains of raging blood! Face to Face. The blood is the same, the two are the same and salty waters shall wash the shores of Raruku. The holy desert remembers its past!"

My facebook feed keeps on having a post that says, "Love Stormlight Archives?" And has a link for a series called Fatemarked by Estes. It doesn't look that good to me, but sometimes appearances are deceiving; has anyone read it? Is it any good?

I can't remember where, but Brandon agreed with the idea that Skybreakers were the M.P (military police) of the Radiants. It would stand to reason, I think, that they would be the strongest order. They would need to be in order to keep everyone in line and put down any resistance from the other orders trying to rebel/misuse their powers.

I hear that from others, but its still great for me. I'm sure a large part of it is nostalgia for me. It reminds me of growing up in Texas and reminds me of stuff I haven't thought of in a while. Also, as much as I love the grimdarke genre, reading Joe Abercrombie etc...it is nice to read stories like these every once in a while for a change of pace.

I'm rereading Magician:Apprentice by Feist. It's been about five year since I have last read this and the sequel Magician:Master. This is the book/series that made me fall in love with the fantasy genre and it's always a great experience getting back into this world. Pug's view from the tower in Master will probably always be one of my favorite scenes from any book.

I have. I said it appears both parties are at fault; although I have admitted there may be things I am not aware of. I find it sad you dismiss other peoples opinions. I am done with this conversation and will not be responding further. Thank you for your opinion. I promise you that I have read and considered your points. -
