  1. Oh, voting, yes. I'll post on that. Particularly in response to Steph's recent post. I personally think Steph is innocent and haven't seen much to suspect about her so far. I don't really trust her much either, but I don't see a reason to vote on her in particular honestly. Probably my biggest suspicion is still HH (not only for previously stated reasons but also because of his one line of reasoning to join the Steph bandwagon). I'm deliberating voting on you a second time... But in my experience that doesn't end well. So instead, I'll just encourage anyone who recently acquired an investigative sort of power to consider investigating HH. Ummm I'll try and do another RP post maybe... Probably realistically I won't be able to do so until next turn though. Next turn I'll try and get a few RP posts in.
  2. Caesura is a sort of pause in the middle of a line, in poetry. Not very much unlike a comma, really. But that wasn't really the point of my joke. The joke was that in the Kingkiller books, Kvothe was given a sword that he decided to name Caesura. I loved the Kingkiller books and I might be making a lot of references to them, forgive me. Greyson sifted through the archives, looking for something, anything about these skindancers. Something to concretely define them, make them something he could deal with. Typically, the story went something like this. A very long time ago, there was much evil in all of Temerant. People lived in darkness, and were possessed by demons called skindancers. Then Tehlu came down to earth and drove out all the demons and brought people to repentance. The skindancers have never been seen since... Greyson wondered at this. Have the skindancers returned then? Why? And yet. There were stranger tales about the skindancers, if he looked hard enough. Tantalizing hints of another version of events. Some few accounts did not refer to skindancers as demons, but as "Fae." One such account attributed the disappearance of skindancers to a mysterious group known as "the Sithe." At first he thought the Sithe might simply be a reference Tehlu's angels... But the account never even mentioned Tehlu. Furthermore, it referenced substantial casualties among the Sithe in the struggle against skindancers, implying they weren't immortal angels, but possibly normal people... It was all very interesting, but not really what he needed to know. Where do they come from? And do they have weaknesses? So far, none of the accounts mentioned any such weaknesses. Not even iron, which worried him. Greyson sighed. Is there nothing I can do to ward them off? In the very least, the stories seemed to agree on one thing. Although they could seemingly discard one host and move on to another at will, the skindancers were limited to what they could do in a physical host. Mundane protection might prove to be as effective as arcane protection.
  3. Well, we have elevations finally, so maybe things are starting up... Wish I got elevated. Still, I'll probably get my elevation next cycle. Anyways... One whipping this cycle. I really wish that the voting system didn't encourage random voting to mitigate punishments... I understand why the system works like that (this will make a lot more sense when there are PC masters in charge). But... Well lets just say I'm definitely not going to be the first one to cast a vote this cycle. To those of you who got elevated: I hope you plan on using your actions productively this cycle. With the exception of burnt because she's roleblocked this cycle and can't use her elevation power.
  4. Speaking of RP tuition reductions, I'm going to continue my RP because I still have some time. Greyson struggled to create his first sympathy binding. He held a candle in one hand, staring intently at the hearth, mustering his Alar... He would light it. The candle and the fire, they were really the same, and the heat could flow from one to the other, and... Nothing. Again. He would figure this out. He wasn't going to go to sleep until that candle lit! It was going to be a long night.
  5. Some RP now. Greyson walked out of his introductory physicking class. Not my favorite field, but... Well, I guess somebody has to do it. He had a window of time between physicking and sympathy. It occurred to him that in all his time at the University, he'd never had a proper chance to visit Imre. Probably not enough time for that today, but... Maybe sometime. Instead he decided to see if he would be allowed to see Ryth in the crockery. Greyson figured Ryth had just cracked under the stress... But the masters didn't seem to think so. There was talk of skindancers again. Greyson wasn't the suspicious type, but... Well he still kept that iron poker in his room. If anywhere could secretly house skindancers, it would be the University. Anyway, he wanted to see Ryth for himelf. He stopped at the entrance to the crockery. A giller from the medica seemed to be keeping watch over the insane. "Excuse me, but would it be possible to visit Ryth? The one that went insane a few days ago." A tired expression crossed the physicker's face. "You're maybe the eighth student who's come by. I can't let you visit Ryth." "Really? Why?" "Masters' orders. Sorry." "Did any of them say why, by any chance?" "You heard the rumors... Masters've been talking about skindancers and all. Seem to be taking it pretty serious. Maybe they want to investigate." They really think these skindancers are credible? "Very well. Thank you." Greyson left the crockery in search of his next class. He wouldn't be surprised if another student cracked soon. Accusations had been flying every which way recently, and tensions were high. The accusations part might not have started except for his own big mouth... Still, he had to make learning a priority. There wasn't much he could do to fight faerietale monsters... Unless he studied them.
  6. damnation. Well, I'm really not one to play long odds on something like this. I guess I should change my votes to other people to spread it out. I'm regretting starting another round of pointless voting. I wish we could do... Something useful this cycle. Not having a meaningful vote or really not being able to do anything useful for the first 3 turns is irritating. I'll retract on Amanuensis and Darkness Ascendant then. One vote reverts back to HH (sorry man) and a second goes to... Arinian maybe. I don't think he has any other votes yet, and possibly I'd rather vote on a noble then a commoner. Sorry Arin. To be realistic about this, we probably aren't coming through this without somebody getting whipped. I suppose that's preferable to an expulsion. If you suspect someone even slightly, I suggest you throw their name in the hat. This is literally a raffle where the winner gets a lashing. May the RNG gods watch over you all.
  7. Goodmorning everyone (I probably should have told y'alls I would be going to sleep earlier), It looks to me like voting isn't working out? Well, fine then. I definitely had doubts about casting a vote in the first place. @Eolhondras brought up most of them. I still think it would be good to treat this like a real lynch... But maybe that's simply not possible. Hemalurgic, you can go off the hook. @Hemalurgic_Headshot As for @randuir voting on me... I mean I think my reasoning for trying to make a real lynch out of this was made clear. You express confusion that I see this cycle as different from last cycle. The distinction between why I was against voting last cycle was that last cycle people were voting purely for tuition reductions. But, honestly? This turn I'm lodging at the golden pony, so feel free to vote on me. I can take a second vote off an edema if any need it. Note that next cycle I will not be at the Golden Pony so this is a one time offer. @little wilson consider retracting your vote, 'cause I just retracted mine. You too @Alvron. If you need the tuition reduction fees that badly, vote on me instead of burnt. I can take one more vote without suffering consequences. EDIT: Also, I realize I'm changing it up kind of late. If the current votes don't get retracted, I'll be online at the end of the cycle ready to cast votes again and spread the load of DP. I highly recommend that anyone else who wants to retract their vote also be online at the end to re-cast it in the event that someone fails to retract. EDIT2: I guess we can vote on Amanuensis and Darkness Ascendant, because both are backing out of the game. I wish 'em both good luck in IRL things.
  8. Asking me to eat food??? You must be trying to poison us!!! AAAAAAAAHHH!!!!! But seriously. I'm certainly not saying I suspect you for being helpful. All I'm saying is that I know you are clever enough to come across as very helpful and still be an eliminator. Which means as of now I neither particularly suspect you nor particularly trust you. In regard to other suspicions. PK seems to be gathering some attention. I trust PK actually. They put themselves on the line to advocate a pretty risky D1 action, and I don't think that would be worth it for a skindancer. I disagreed with PK advocating that everyone vote, but I don't suspect them. If I had to say I suspect someone... Hmmm... I didn't particularly like the way HH was so ready to throw around votes on people without solid reasoning. Also, the first vote he cast was on someone who already had a vote, which could be an honest mistake, but could be viewed in a different light... Hmm... I might put a complaint on HH. I wouldn't mind roleblocking someone that I nominally suspect. HH, I'm sorry about that, because my suspicions on you aren't very strong. But I do believe that we need to start voting based on real suspicions, instead of just voting on people who lodge in the golden pony to get tuition reductions. I realize that by casting this one vote, I am precipitating more votes being sent around. I want that to happen. I'm not against a high amount of voting, but I want it to be based on suspicions, not tuition. Anyways... Time to continue RP, since I finally have some time for it. The argument outside the fishery seemed to be getting louder. Greyson stole a peak out the window. A small crowd seemed to be angry at... William, if his recollection was accurate. Greyson felt a little sorry for him. Sure, Greyson himself had disagreed with the student, but he didn't really think William was likely to be a skindancer. He didn't honestly expect anyone to be a skindancer. Skindancers... Next they'll be saying one of the chandrian was attending the University in disguise. (That little remark was for you Aman ) And anyway, if William and some other students all reported each other, that was their own business. Greyson reported noone and got reported by noone, and that was fine by him. Mostly, he was just annoyed at the argument. He needed to advance at the University, and that meant paying attention in all his classes. Especially a class in the arcane arts, like this one. He intended to become a full arcanist, and after all it took to get to the university he wasn't going to turn back. He didn't have time for distractions like that argument. Greyson directed his attention back to the front of the class. The master artificer was just getting done explaining the basic idea of how a sympathy lamp works. As the class concluded, the students were reminded to keep learning the runes of sygaldry. Greyson absentmindedly hummed the mnemonic the masters had given them to learn the basic runes. It was said Kvothe the Bloodless created it. Whether or not this was true, the masters seemed to think it would help students. "Ule and doch are both for binding Reh for seeking, Kel for finding Gea key, Teh lock Pesin water, Resin rock..." The students filed out of the fishery. Greyson wondered what class he would have next... He realized it was a physicking class, all the way at the other end of the university. He would be late if he didn't run. Greyson grabbed his bag and bolted for the door. I think I know what made Ryth crack... I bet the course schedule says it all. He was gasping for air as he barreled across the University, and around a corner... And straight into another student. Greyson lost his balance and went down, hard. The side of his head struck the stone and there was a very slight ringing in his ears, along with a splitting pain. A steady stream of cursing in Siaru escaped his lips. Anyone want to get run into?
  9. See a man without a face? Move like ghosts from place to place. What's their plan? What's their plan? Chandrian. Chandrian! But about Randuir: He gained my trust in LG30 in a near identical way you know... And he was totally one of the unjust at the end. I'm not saying I suspect Rand at all, I'm just saying, he's been known to be inordinately helpful in PMs and end up being evil in the end. Greyson sat in his second class of the day, an introductory course on Sygaldry taught at the fishery. The master artificer described how different runes could create a permanent sympathy link between objects. It seemed like an interesting practice, although Greyson couldn't seem to bring himself to take any notes on it. He heard loud noises outside. It sounded like an argument...
  10. Interesting... I suppose the voting last cycle is your own business, seeing as I neither cast nor received a vote last cycle. But perhaps my position makes more sense now... You weren't about to eliminate the risks of RNG putting some people on the horns. As for voting this cycle... I suppose voting on a genuine suspicion this turn is a good idea. Voter participation isn't quite so critical in this game, where lynches don't reveal alignment, but actual discussion about suspicions might prove enlightening. I wouldn't vote for no reason though. Try to find a real suspicion to vote on this cycle, even if its a very weak one. We still have a chance at learning information from a lynch, if we treat it like a real lynch. I'm wondering if we have much to talk about honestly... If my read of this game is correct, it seems like the major staple of information is supposed to be abilities (well, and whatever you can speculate / extrapolate from people's general behavior, their "gut read" as it were). I'm not sure that we have very much information to work with yet (but I do recommend discussing whatever you can, 'cause that gives us more information). I guess the next step forward is... Everyone work on advancing in fields and becoming financially secure. That's probably one of the most important things a villager can do to help village right now. I'll try and cut my tuition with lots of RP... In the morning. Goodnight everyone.
  11. So it was Kipper after all? Interesting. I wasn't following too attentively but I enjoyed reading the writeups.
  12. This talk about gunsmith roles has given me an interesting idea for a reckoners themed SE game... I'll need to think about it more to iron out details, but maybe I'll post a game idea soon.
  13. Are you implying that your reasons for voting on Mage are primarily information gathering? Voting literally gives us 0 information. The best sources of information is our investigative roles, not lynching. Also, as has already been mentioned, you don't really need the tuition reduction. I know you've changed your vote, but both posts didn't seem to go into it that much. If you have the time, I would invite you to reconsider, given how few other people have voted. There's only an hour left in the cycle. Sigh... Not much chance of stopping all these votes, even if they'll have a net negative effect... And at this point, spreading out the votes probably mitigates the negative effects of the existing votes. I'm considering casting a vote, despite promising that I wouldn't... Ugh. No, I think enough votes have already been cast that you don't need one from me. I refuse to participate in this. Was this a pun?? I PMed our GMs about this before the game started. If you elevate once in alchemy, to E'lir, and then once in mathematics, to Re'lar... You only get one alchemy ability, but it is the Re'lar tier version of that ability. (you also get Re'lar level insanity bonus for alchemy) I'm not saying point-splitting is necessarily better or worse than investing all in one field. Personally, I'll be investing all in one field. But some people may want to consider point splitting. Anyways... I was planning on writing a quick RP at the end, but I seem to be running out of time. End post.
  14. You can't get a negative tuition? Awww it would have been fun if you could get negative, to plan for a cycle to outdo Kvothe... Anyways! Speaking of tuition reductions, I've finished a little piece of RP. Term was beginning. Greyson waited impatiently with the other assembled students, waiting for the Chancellor to speak. "What is the meaning of life?" she began. "It’s an age-old question, and one without any simple answer. But it’s the question I wish to pose, over the next few months. We are the University, the greatest center of learning in the modern world! Can we not solve this question, at long last? There is an answer. Perhaps many. Each of you, during the upcoming terms, will consider it, until you have found an answer to your satisfaction. Consider the great philosophers, the opinions of your grandmothers, the voice of a beggar across the street. Find your answer. What is the meaning of life?" Wonderful. The opening speech is some philosophical nonsense. And here I thought the University was about learning magic. "I ask this, because it has become relevant lately. You will need that answer, many of you. Death is coming." Excuse me? Greyson looked up in disbelief at the last words. "Master Drought died last night, to a Skindancer attack." A master dead. Tehlu. A master dead... To a skindancer? Skindancers were supposed to be about as real as the Chandrian. A wave of murmering swept across the students only to be silenced by a stern wave of the Chancellor's hand. "No, they’re not fairy tales or children’s stories. Yes, they’re real, and yes, they’re here. Until they are exterminated, the coming months will be hard." Greyson's mind tried to process it, completely in shock. He wasn't sure what to feel. His skepticism battled his paranoia battled his ambition. Could skindancers be real? Could they come after me? And might the University elevate more students, with a master dead? "You cannot trust your friends, because anyone could be a Skindancer." He looked around the assembled students. They didn't look like they were possessed by anything. But then, that's sort of the point, isn't it? If the skindancers are even real... Tehlu knows there are plenty of unusual causes of death in the Arcanum. What makes her so certain these skindancer creatures are responsible? "But we are the University, are we not? The center of learning in the modern world? Arm yourselves, my students. Advance in the ranks. Find the Skindancers among you and wipe them out, until we remain, purer for the battle we have won!" Her voice seemed fake to Greyson. She had no right to sound so cheerful and confident when announcing that their University was being invaded by demons from folklore. No right at all. She paused, then continued in a more somber tone. "And consider, as you do, the meaning of life, in the case that you are one felled by the fighting." Kraem, she actually means it... Nothing was making any sense. Greyson walked back to his room. He stopped by the place that for some reason was called the fishery, and asked to borrow an iron poker. After all, everyone knows demons don't like iron. It's probably all a bunch of nonsense. But still. Best to be safe, right? He arrived at his lodging in The Golden Pony. They offered a very comfortable room, but the price was ruinous. He would need to find somewhere cheaper, at least until he could rise in the ranks of the University... The following morning he had his first classes. It would pay to get a good rest in preparation.
  15. Hmmm it is time I made a major post in this game, before the cycle ends. About reporting people... First, I think you guys are ignoring the danger that DP will cancel out some of our EP. Second, I'm not seeing enough participation in "lets everyone vote on each other equally" for it to be a good idea. If enough people got on board this movement I'd be in favor, but I do not have very much faith in last minute activity to come through and bolster our voter turnout. As it is, you are going to arbitrarily ruin some people's chances of getting master in competitive fields by poke voting some people's elevation points away and not others... And, if voter turnout doesn't pick up very quickly, you are certainly going to risk putting people on the horns for no reason. Also I suppose I should mention that the usual reasons for D1 lynches certainly don't apply in this game. We have no real chance of actually removing an eliminator, and even a successful expulsion gives us no information. I will not be casting a vote myself this turn, even though I could use the half talent reduction in tuition. I'm not nearly as desperate as a ruh, and I can totally understand why you guys in particular would be very motivated to vote. But I am only one step above the ruh, and I assure you that I'm not dismissing the possibility of tuition reduction lightly. And I understand why non-ruh would find it a good idea too. In theory, if we could get everyone to cast votes evenly on everyone else, it would be a net positive (or maybe not I suppose, since this is a competitive game and ultimately if everyone benefits equally it does nothing for your odds of winning). But I'm looking at the voting counts and I don't think this is attainable. I will also say this... For all of you tempted to cast a vote, I really hope you've made sure to send out a PM this cycle before you turn to voting. Because that has an equal tuition reduction to voting and doesn't cost you anything. If any of you haven't sent PMs yet, I would seriously have to wonder... Also, @Elbereth am I correct in assuming that the effects of these reductions aren't repeated for multiple votes/PMs? Voting twice still only gives you five jots reduction, right? And PMing thrice is still only five jots, not 1 talent five jots? I would be very surprised to hear otherwise. Which means that even if everyone voted on everyone, we actually only each save 3 jots. Also: Obviously, I am not the authoritative answer. But I can offer some guesswork. I would guess "yes" to the first question. This is because in The Name of the Wind, Kvothe received a negative tuition for his first term. I imagine it is theoretically possible for your tuition reductions to outweigh your base tuition, but I'd also guess it is astronomically difficult. To the second question... I guess that depends if tuition reductions / inflations occur after or before the 33% increase. Now, onwards to other discussion... Nope, can't think of anything else to discuss yet. We really did discuss a fair amount before the game, didn't we? In response to you're point... I've thought about this a good deal in trying to pick a strategy for EP. You are quite right about only needing 1 point. In addition, if you invest in multiple fields, you can get high tier abilities in all of your fields by advancing only once in each of them. This makes splitting your points in multiple fields potentially rather powerful. The hard part of point-splitting is finding what field you think nobody else is even trying for. And I suppose you also basically give up your chances of becoming a master if you do this, since you won't get the 5 point bonus from only advancing in one field. It's should also go without saying that advancing in multiple arcane fields is very nearly suicide. So... There are some substantial advantages and disadvantages of this approach. Of the two approaches of either investing all in one field or spreading one's points, I would be reluctant to declare one to be clearly superior. Lets try for some RP then. I believe the name I had picked was... Greyson? I'm going to make a second post so that my discussion is visible now.
  16. Working on a real post, but can I just say the Kingkiller Wikia is a spectacular resource? I've read the books, but it's been a couple years...
  17. Hmmm and so the game begins! Should be interesting... It's been a while since I've read kingkiller books, I might need to brush up on the lore before I start posting RPs. Anyways... I'm typing from my phone right now, and I don't have much to say yet... But I guess we should think of something to discuss now the game has actually started I encourage everyone to make posting this cycle so we can get a lay of the land
  18. The alley cannot collapse. Ruin would never allow it. We wait in the shadows, poised to force feed an unsuspecting passerby some ruinous delicious baked goods.
  19. A new sharder, and an active one, seeing as I'm finding your posts all over. The redwall series used to be my favorite, a few years back. That was before I discovered the cosmere, but still... I too have read all the books, most of them multiple times over. Excellent books. And I am pleased to see you interested in Sanderson Elimination! I assure you, we have a quite lively mafia community here. The only thing I might not be pleased about is you're apparent vendetta against the dark alley. We'll have to work on that. But other than that! Welcome!
  20. Granted. You're judgement is now seriously impaired. The boons and banes you grant yourself are... Quite unpleasant. And nobody can intervene to help you, as per your own wish. So you destroy yourself. In theory, you could grant yourself better judgement, but since you're judgement is so bad, you immediately dismiss the idea. Power is only a good thing if it is in good hands... I wish for a dime.
  21. Granted. The sword, not the book. You are now Torol Sadeas, and Dalinar gives you Oathbringer in exchange for freeing the bridgemen... Seeing as you know how Words of Radiance ends, enjoy being Sadeas... I wish that Jezrien would stop drooling.
  22. Physicking is useful for both sides. Most of the powerful fields have pretty substantial risks to going insane in the higher levels, and physicking is the only way to reduce people's insanity points. The eliminators obviously find that appealing, because it lets them more safely create a namer that can use mass attack abilities. But that ability is equally useful to villagers, provided they can collaborate. And I believe certain features in this game make that kind of collaboration a bit easier than normal.
  23. No certainty regarding the sanity of any of us, I think... As for discussing the tactics of different fields... I applaud the discussion, but I'm going to have to refuse to participate in it. There's not much chance that I would truthfully indicate in advance what fields I am interested in. But I suppose I'm okay with declaring one field I don't intend to deal with. While I can see why the archives is an attractive option... I can agree that it has substantial limitations. I suspect the main appeal is that it doesn't require much collaboration / trusting other people (which, in SE, is not a boon to be taken lightly). It doesn't grant any risk of insanity in of itself, and it lets you learn other field's abilities. This means it is theoretically easy to act unilaterally if you advance a lot in the archives. I do recommend that someone advance in archives though. I remember in LG30, everyone was so sure that the dustbringer role would get swarmed. I correctly predicted that most people would be too cautious to actually go for it, so I invested all my means in getting the role and quickly obtained it. I consequentially lost the role and then lost the game, but that's besides the point. What I'm saying is, given the history of the last Kingkiller game, I wouldn't be surprised if nobody tried for archivist. And I think that would be a mistake. ...and I pretty much just ended up discussing roles for the last few paragraphs, even though I said I wouldn't. Sigh... I'll just hit the post button and call it a day.
