  1. Okay, I am officially confused. Just to recap and make sure I understand:
  2. If it helps you work on your theory, Brandon has enumerated the various known (so far) methods of "immortality" in the Cosmere. WoB: Hope that helps
  3. As far as I know, it only factors in as much as Newton Third Law says it should - determining which side of the equation moves, and how much.
  4. This is known behaviour, discussed in the Sharder FAQ and reported in the site upgrade thread here. Basically, when this happens, the user needs to expand the top level first, before expanding any interior quotes or spoiler tags. Hope that helps.
  5. Keep in mind that Hemalurgic Iron does not steal or bestow anything Allomantic or Feruchemical. H-Iron steals Physical Strength, more specifically, it steals part of the portion of Preservation inside of people - attached to the Spiritweb portion of Physical Strength. Also, when using Hemalurgy with these raw portions of souls, the physical changes caused are increased. HoA Annotations/WoB: In the case of Koloss - they are receiving four stolen portions of the raw souls - and the changes caused by such a twisted spiritweb are. . . well, we see in Era 1 how profound the changes become (sterility, sloughing skin, changed nutrition, unstoppable growth, early death, mental stunting, etc.). They are a "new race" for a reason, and nothing human-centric should be assumed as applying to a spiked Era 1 Koloss (and we don't know enough about Harmony's changes post-Catacendre).
  6. Welcome to the Shard. I see you have been her a while, but infrequently and it's been a while. You may want to consider posting what you have or have-not read in (whichever list is shorter) in an Intro Post or your profile. Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ. Sorry you did not enjoy Sand Mastery. May I ask which version you read? Every Invested Art is impacted by technology, which is one of the reasons Brandon is building the cosmere as he is, to show how magic affects technologic progress, and how technology affects magical understanding. Understanding and application of the Scientific Method will have a profound effect on all Manifestations of Investiture (as already seen in Warbreaker - ch 46). Just because Ribbons were the primary means used in-story, does not mean they are the only use. While primarily used for work (in the context of Simple Machines), the Omnibus already shows theorizing on additional applications - not to mention the combat potential that kept the Kerztians at bay until they got an insider to poison the Sand Masters to allow them to attack. For example: (SA Spoilers) And, sure, the Mastrell's were taken out by Sabotage (Elorin) - but the same could be done with other invested arts (Mistborn, SA Spoilers): As for wider Cosmere implications (Spoilers for Stormlight Archive and Tress): Hope that helps
  7. if you want math-heavy, you should probably check out Dr.Physics' post(s). . . All I was trying to say is that Object Mass is not the only factor. My layman's understanding is that Allomantic Force (F) is roughly equal to Allomancer's Mass (M) amended by Allomantic Strength (S) and Push Distance (D): F=D(S(M)) All numbers Notional - for example only - where: - Distance of 1 is right next to the allomancer and 0.01 is the furthest they can maintain the push - Base Strength is 1 for a Misting or mistborn during Vin's time when no factors are involved Basic Coinshot shooting a coin in-hand: F=1(1(M)) - this is the common understanding Hemalurgist with no prior Allomancy and a single Spike, same scenario: F=1(0.9(M)) - as per the law of Hemalurgic Decay (decay increased if spike is not immersed in blood when outside of the body, there is always a non-zero amount of decay because that is how hemalurgy works, but any use other than body-to-body will increase that decay) Hemalurgist, as above, with spike that had not gone body-to-body: F=1(0.5(M)) - as per law of Hemalurgic Decay Lerasium Mistborn, same scenario: F=1(2(M)) - due to higher base allomantic strength Inquisitor Mistborn, single spike, Same Scenario: F=1(1.9(M)) - Due to stacked abilities through hemalurgy minus hemalurgic decay Vin, as shown her first time steelpushing over the Luthadel Wall: F=0.01(1(M)) - where this equation for a vertical steelpush would top out at the foece of Gravity, making her hover at the apex of her maximum steelpush distance I hope that clarifies what I was trying to say - which is simply that while Allomancer's weight is the primary factor, it is not the only factor because the force exerted also has to account for both distance and amended Allomantic Strength. Now, if each F is burning one mole of Steel per second (again, notional example) then Flaring may be expressed as a component of how much fuel is being used - with Duralumin expressed as consuming all available fuel at once: Total Force = Burn(Force) | Ft = B(D(S(M))) Like I said, my perspecitive is just a layman's understanding based on books and WoBs. Actual Physicists (like linked above) get into more details and weeds. Hope that helps.
  8. Entirely possible. We simply do not yet have enough information. For my money, based on current data, I think the Shaod is based on: Connection to the land [1] Connection to Devotion (Examples) Raoden - Devotion to his people Taan - Devotion to his Scupting Mareshe - Devotion to "art" Galadon - Devotion to his farm Saolin - Devotion to Eondel's Legion Karata - Devotion to the Children etc. [1] - Land, as it was when Elantris was built - which does not necessarily match Arelon's current national borders, which is why people from North Duladen are sometimes changed by the Shaod. Likely a similar Connection as seen by the Malwish Translating Medallion.
  9. Interesting theory, but unlikely. The Aonic Pronuncialtion and word construction (Glossary - Pronunciation Guide) are from Raoden's people - we do not know what Language the City-Builders used, or how they pronounced the "Aons" (Meanings are tied to the Aon Forms - but pronunciation and grammar are dependant on the local language). However, Riina, Riino, Elrao, and Alonoe are all distinctly Aonic names. However, this does not preclude OG Elantrians mixing with post-Splintering Elantrians in the Ire.
  10. The Highprince's Father died at the end of WoR. Oathbringer mentioned the son became the new Highprince.
  11. This one is actually answered in-book - I do not see any WoBs about it. Hope that helps.
  12. Shorter by distance, not by time (and Jasnah was in a hurry). WoK Ch 74: They had to use a ship anyway to leave Kharbranth (no overland pass from the city to the Continent - part of why it stays independent). The overland trip Shallan took was weeks of travel - so an overland trip, even from Karanak (the closest port) would be at least three times the distance overland (and had they made it to New Natanan as intended, the overland trip would have been even shorter than Shallan's). So, even with the voyage, the trip they chartered would have been at least twice as fast as the version you are asking about, especially when you consider how many detours it would take to find bridges to span the multiple rivers and tributaries. Zoomed map: Shallan's landfall is shown here. Hope that helps.
  13. Companion WoB: Known Planets are collected in the Cosmere Page Here. Keep in mind that the 10 Core Planets do not necessarily match to books and series - they are the planets that have a wider impact throughout the Cosmere (and we have not seen them all). So, possibilites: Hope that helps
  14. More ideas added
  15. Updated links to brandonsanderson.com as it has recently been overhauled (such as removing the Deleted Scenes and Annotations sections, which are now linked from each book's respective page rather than collected all together)
  16. I can agree that Savants do gain a deeper understanding of their abilities, and we have WoBs that they can learn tecniques difficult or impossible for a normal user of that MoI. So, some things are skill-based, but not necessarily requiring Savant-level investiture warping (Kelsier's skill with pushes and pulls, and pushing on areas other than the center of gravity), some are Brute Force (the theoretical Elend learning to pierce Copper) and some may only happen to a Savant as they merge their soul with their MoI.
  17. Have you read the White Sand Omnibus? The various Ars Arcanum fit her style of scientific method as shown in her very first Ars Arcanum, though I would agree she has probably observed and talked to Savants (as seen in BoM) as part of her research. I think it's been confirmed that Wax's ability is not due to Savantism (though it was originally intended to be such). So, Wax is not a savant (and does not display Savant-like consequences like Spook and Kaza).
  18. Interesting. Looks like a slog time of checking as many brandonsanderson.com forum links as we can find to see which ones are now broken (or redirected). . .
  19. No worries, no ire. You can't know until you either ask or learn the hard way (or take the very very long road like me, who lurked for 3 years learning from reading other's mistakes and only posting in one thread the whole time; and still I managed to screw up and learn the hard way for a few things). Welcome to the Shard. Please consider an Intro Thread (or your profile) to let us know what you have (or have-not) read so that spoilers can be avoided, if necessary (whichever list is shorter). Have a great day.
  20. It is a thing - All non-Canon works should only be discussed in their respective sections. At the least, since this is outside that location, the thread title should mention "[Prime spoilers]" so people avoiding it don;t even open the thread. If you are unsure how to edit a thread title, please see the Sharder FAQ. All-that-said. . . We already know the origin of the Safehand. It started with Arts and Majesty separating what activities were acceptable between women and men, and evolved into covering the left hand to ensure women primarily used their right hand (left handed Lighteyes are forcibly retrained - as still happens in some places, like Korea, IRL) WoBs: Dragonsteel Spoilers: Hope that helps
  21. Welcome to the Shard. Please consider letting us know in an Intro Post (or your profile) what you have or have-not read (whichever list is shorter). Also, please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some forum tips and tricks (since every forum is slightly different) Please rememeber how important the safety of Elend's people were to him - even back at the start of WoA. I beleive Elend smiled here, because he saw the most likely result of his death would be the safety of his remaining people and reuniting with Vin (even if it was in death). If you read SH, then know that what Elend saw with Duralumin-burned Atium was similar to what Fuzz showed Kelsier in Part 3, Ch 3 (See below) - but because Ruin's abilities with Futuresight are different, Elend's expereince would have been more immediate (short-term future) and less possibilties seen. M:SH It's the nature of Shards and Intent - Preservation has a strong affinity for the future because the Intent of Preservation is to keep things for the future. Ruin is about decay and entropy - about them expiring before the "future" so Ruin's power is less able to see the possibilities in the Future, or see as far foward as Preservation's power does. SO, Elend's expereince would have been more immediate and less ambiguous than Kelsier's - but still similar.
  22. In the specific case of Medallions, my hypothesis is essentially: Excisor implies Hemalurgy (by definition - excise is "remove") Make one Hemalurgic Spike for <ability> (Example: F-Brass, since that was key to surviving the Ice Death) Remove Identity - either from the spike, or before spiking A Soother burns the H-Keyed Brass, producing the Firesoul MoI in the form of Kinetic Investiture (X 10?) Now that you have an MoI in Kinetic Form and without identity, that gets stored in (possibly up to 10) Nicrosil Minds Resulting in 1 or more Unsealed NicrosilMinds storing the Firesoul Ability Connect that with Brass to act as the Metalmind for stored heat Result: FireMothers and FireFathers I hope that is more clear - though the real theory I am working on isn't just about Medallions, but how all three influence each other when funky things happen. . .
  23. So, this may not be entirely coherent because I am not quite done researching everything; but I will try to explain. It's based off of a lot of little bits and pieces going back to the Annotations to Era 1 (I recently reread them all, which is what started my conjecture). What we know: All three Metallic Arts were meant to interact with each other. A Feruchemical Charge in a metal changes the key, so when burned with Allomancy you produce external-powered Feruchemical power. Brandon has sidestepped all questions about Allomantically burning spikes, due to identity But he did indicate that an Inquisitor could burn their spikes (painful). A spike with a Hemalurgic Charge also cannot easily be used as a metalmind (because it is already invested) But he confirmd that Inquisitors could use their Spikes as metalminds Ruin was pushing hard on the fabric of Scadrial and that allowed Hemalurgy to accomplish things that should not normally have been possible (TLM Ars Arcanum) Which may explain why Inquisitors were exceptions to the above - but also possible that they had so many spikes that their aggregate "Identity" (with pieces of 12+ identity sources) short circuited this as well Conjecture: So an Identity-less Spike should be able to be burned with Allomancy Since a F-Keyed metal produces a feruchemical power, and Since a H-Keyed metal is not using the stored MoI - but is the ability to use the stored MoI Therefore the power produced would be exponential amount of the stored power - like what is produced by an Excisor to create medallions(?) So a Metalmind Storing H-Keyed Allomantically-burned metal seems to fit what we know about the Nicrosil portion of a Medallion It stores the MoI, which then acts as a discrete "item" tapped to access the power and stored to return that MoI to the Metalmind Which then implies that if this is created with H-Keyed metals, then normal Feruchemical use of Nicrosil would not be storing/tapping a Manifestation of Investiture Hope that makes sense to anybody other than me. . . Annotations: WoBs:
  24. That's a theory I am working on - I'll edit or respond more in depth when I have time after work. . .
  25. Or the medallions aren't really F-Nicrosil - They are (possibly) Hemalurgic Nicrosil (though the excisor) and - much the same way that storing in a MetalMind and burning that changes teh allomantic effect - stealing with Nicrosil changes the way that Hemalurgic Charge taps and stores.
