  1. The problem with such short riddles is there are usually many answers that fit the provided "description." Such as, I have previously heard and seen-in-print that exact riddle with the answer being "temperature." But, no worries, that's half the fun.
  2. Temperature?
  3. Here are a few I wrote long ago for writing prompts on FanStory:
  4. The answer is different if you are discussing "shardblade on Earth" or "Cosmere AI." @hwiles did a good job covering the former. On the latter, we have these WoBs: So a true self-aware AI in the Cosmere requires Investiture and has Cognitive and Spiritual Aspects, implying that a Shardblade could damage (possibly kill) such a being. Hope that helps
  5. Please see: Site Update reports (Summary - 4th Spoiler) Setting question Mobile Pre-Site Change Hope that helps
  6. Thinking on it, it could be why Woman's Script looks vaguely like a Audio Equalizer - especially if the original Dawnchant used something similar with the letter spacing indicating the beat (Rhythm).
  7. This premise is not correct, despite what Shai thinks (she just does not have enough international experience to know better). WoBs: She likely would not have been able to Reseal, had she tried (she mentioned not trying) if Resealing uses a differnt Setting Mark (it is unclear in the text, but does not make sense that the Grands would use a MaiPon shaped setting mark for their MoI). Now, if Scadrian Worldhoppers resettled in MaiPon, and their child happened to be Twinborn. . . that may be different as the clild would have teh Metallic Arts genetic Heritage and the local heritage of being born in MaiPon. Hope that helps
  8. Yeah, I learned Korean in California to start (Native speakers though 97-99) - then went to study at Yonsei University in Seoul for a semester - and that's where I started learning Japanese (which is an experience - learning a second foreign language through a foreign language with none of your primary language involved at all). That was around 2000 - and I lived on Okinawa 2001-2005 (which may be technically Japanese, but is certainly not "TV" Japanese and very far from Tokyo Japanese as the Tokyo native spouses of two coworkers always reminded us).
  9. I think our teachers just tought differently, because we are saying the same things with different terminology. Inquisitive conjugation of any verb is "desu ka" "masu ka" etc. - just as Korean conjugation for inquisitive verbs end in Ka. The fact that Ka, as an article, has other functions when used outside fo a conjugation is immaterial because it is like English to, too, and two - homonyms with different definitions (in this case the same spelling, since that is a single letter in Hiragana). In my dictionaries (at least) I cannot find teh inquisitive ending under Ka - only under "masu ka," "desu ka," and similar conjugations because it is all part of one function. That said, part of teh disparity can also be that I learned from a Korean in Korea and Japan, not from an American (or other non-related language primary). So, it could be that Korean forms influenced the teacher's perception of Japanese.
  10. Well, in Japanese and Korean it's also part of the conjugation. "Nihongo wakarimasuka" (Do you understand Japanese?) is conjugated as a question by the "masu ka" form of the verb and simply responding Wakarimasu changes it to a statement "I understand." Korean has similar grammar, where verb conjugation makes up a significant part of the meaning. Cosmere rul choahamnika "Do you enjoy the Cosmere?" becomes a statement with one syllable change in the conjugation - "Choahamnida" (I enjoy [that]).
  11. It could be that something like this is part of the problem with the Ardent's translating the oldest Dawnsinger Chant. They've confirmed that many of the documents are from Humans during the Disapora and as regions used the only alphabet they knew to reproduce local languages. However, knowing how brandon likes connections and influences from real languages, I would note that there are IRL langage grammar's using a similar mechanism. For example: in Chinese there are markers for a sentance (Traditional Chinese also doe not use punctuation) so in the greeting Ni Hao Ma - Ni=You, Hao=Good and Ma is the question marker making the sentence "Are you good?"
  12. Welcome to the Shard. Please consider checking out the Sharder FAQ for some tips and tricks of which you may be unaware. Also, please condsider updating your first post here with a list of what you have or have-not read (whichever list is shorter) so that we can use spoilers appropriately. Not necessarily separate threads for each chapter or two, but (if you have already read them - spoilers if you have not) you may want to check out these read-along threads: Ale's I'm reading Wax & Wayne for the first time Era 2 read-along Amara's I'm Reading Stormlight Archive for the First Time read-along There are a few others around if you seach (those were just 'off t'top o mi head'. A format like that where you post completed checpaters and ask questiosn if you have any works well in a forum thread environment, and we can answer or answer-in-spoilers (this way you can come back to read the spoiler section after the indicated chapter, if desired) as needed. Hope that helps
  13. Good catch. I beleive that scene is double-foreshadowing - both about him having been responsible for unforgivable atrocities; and his subtle hint that, because the Ghostbloods have followed Jasnah to Kharbranth, they have finally realized (or are possibly about to realize) the Diagram exists - a Secret Society so small and localized they went unnoticed for a long time. WoB (as of Words of Radiance): At the time we knew of 17th Shard, Ghostbloods, and Sons of Honor. WoR is when we learn more about the Diagram. Hope that helps
  14. I made a Cosmere Guide ePub that I give to coworkers that may be interested (though it probably helps if they are already "readers") and I keep an extra copy of the first book of a few different series (Cosmere and non-Cosmere) available for people that want to borrow one and try the first book without needing to invest money to find out if they like the series (many do, and buy their own copies). Bartending might be a different environment, especially talking to customers rather than coworkers. I also have a word file of recommended reading that I print out, so I can give one or more pages to somebody that seems interested. The pages I made are: Non-Fiction, General Fiction - Stand-alone, Fiction - Series, Speculative Fiction - Stand-alone, Speculative Fiction- Series (ongoing), Speculative Fiction- Series (completed) - so if somebody indicates interest in one or more pages, I can hand them the sheet to take with them. The summaries I use are very similar to the way the Recommended Reading thread is set up (Series, Book 1 title, Author, Complete or not, and a short blurb). Example: Not sure if any of those might help you.
  15. If by this you mean North Carolina, then nope. Fayetteville area (and I've converted a number of friends and coworkers too).
  16. Everything we have confirmed about Glyphs are on the Coppermind Page. You may also want to check out this thread where the Fandom worked to figure out the various Stormlight Archive Scripts, I think Glyph discussion starts around page 4 and is interspersed throughout. Note: Glyphs are memorized, not "read" as (especially old) glyphs have had their graphemes muddled as the glyph changed over the ages. Newer glyphs are easier to find the graphemes (example Zeras). WoI: So, without having the actual glyphs for any of those words, you may be able to craft something from the component graphemes. However, also consider that as far as we have seen, there is no grammar or conjugation for Glyphs - so far they on seem to be used for Nouns and Labelling, not sentences. Not that that should dissuade you from, for example, a Glyphpair (maybe Fleet Runs - continuous action implied). Hope that helps
  17. Being an exact duplicate, 1 minute apart, it's probably a lag-induced accidental double-post (I've seen a few of those today). I've reported it, but @Lumpspren could also hide the second redundant post (as explained in the Sharder FAQ).
  18. Affirm. Likely to reinforce the Khriss' Ars Arcanum entry. You may also notice that Hoid's lyrics were changed to a subtle hint to his identity. SA Spoilers:
  19. I think it would depend on where and how the Bond is formed. Aether Bonds are Luhel bonds, so that is unlikely because they are a Physical Realm bond. Nightblood's bond is something we do not know enough about, but I have theorized that it is a Cognitive Realm Bond (on a mechanic similar to the Koloss Bonds from Mistborn Era 1). I think it would have to be a bond in the Spiritweb (SR), and would likely also have to have a Connection to Roshar - so probably not Aviar bonds either (though we could get that answer if we ever see Mraize handle a deadeye shardblade, since he has an Aviar).
  20. I agree this is likely, but I also think it is possible that: This is also likely. We know the Bonds can trancend realms, so the two are not mutally exclusive (the bond Gem is always "touching" the SR). With the associate "10 heartbeats" imagery and the "Syncing heartbeats for a semblance of life" description - an artificial Gemheart also makes a lot of sense - located in the Pommel when the spren is summoned, and inside the spren while in the CR.
  21. Welcome to the Shard. This section is for Introductory posts (please consider including what you have or have-not read, whichever list is shorter). Also, please check out the Sharder FAQ for some important tips and info on how this forum works, including. . . Please note the Forum descriptions. (Sharder FAQ - Spoiler Section) This belongs in the Cosmere Section (Cosmere Discussion) and you posted to Introduce Yourself. I have reported the thread to ask a n Admin to move it for you. FYSA, here are the description differences from the main forum page: Basically, any topic dealing with one Shardworld should go in that specific forum, and any discussion with two-or-more Shardworlds, or general Realmatic Theory belongs in Cosmere Discussion (not including items covered by the Spoiler Policy - such as SA5 previews) Hope that helps
  22. That's the part of the assumption that is unlikely to be true. Spren allow access to surges because of Connection. It just so happens that each of the 9 Radiant Spren species (?) also happen to have a specific ratio of Honor/Cultivation (ranging from 10/90 to 90/10). The three Bondsmith Spren are also Connected to the their surges - not because of their percentage of Splinter Investiture, but because of how Surgebinding was "adjusted" by the arrival of Honor and Cultivation in the system after the Shattering. Shards do not tend to "create" their Manifestation of Investiture (Tanavast and Kora didn't decide "we want it to work this way") - the magic develops as a consequence of factors relating to the Shards, their Intent(s), the Planet, and probably other factors we do not yet know. WoBs: Hope that helps
  23. Welcome to the Shard. Please check out the Sharder FAQ for some important tips and info on thoe the forum works, including. . . Please note the Forum descriptions. 24. Fused cannot because Odium's number is nine. The 10 Radiant Surges are all a mix of Honor and Cultivation, just in different proportions (otherwise Progressions wouldn;t work with Stormlight, and would require Lifelight). Also Raboniel is very biased, so you can't take what she says as "fact" - it's only her interpretation of something she doesn't quite comprehend. WoBs: It is likely that all Bondsmiths will have Tension and Adhesion. But their application of those two surges will not necessarily be the same, just as Dalinar's Adhesion is not quite the same as Kaladin's. Hope that helps
  25. It's on the radar. Please consider using this thread, as that is where members are contributing ideas for the Admins to consider once they have time to work on the project.
