I searched, but did not see this covered anywhere on the forum, Coppermind or Arcanum. After rereading Dawnshard this weekend, I have an idea on what Huio's third oath was: My first inclination was "me" but "others" seems to make more sense in the context of an oath. Ideas, comments, BGCs?

I don't think they decay, if just because of Hobber: So, with at least a month passing we do know that there was never any mention of decay in Hobber's deadened legs. Absence of evidence isn't proof, but I think its a strong indiecator in this case. Also, while thinking on this, I find it interesting that when color is used in Awakeneing the object turns grey* - like a Blade deadened limb. I wonder if anyone has ever asked BS if it is the same shade of grey. It might indicate that when color is pulled from an object, it loses some "quality" that is similarly lost when a limb is severed. [Edit] WoB *Note: obviously excepting H10 - Perfect Invocation

If severing the limb with the shard blade is actually severing the spiritual connection of the limb to the individual, then Breath might restore that connection. In Warbreaker, we see indications that Breath creates a connection between the awakener and the awakened <object>.: So, if the breath creates a connection to the severed limb, then I would guess that the correct intent and command might be able to just restore the limb entirely (since we already see some investiture "heal" the severed limbs).

If the point is speculation, maybe the more relavant question might be: What do you think the Spren would be like if one or more Shard(s) other than Cultivation or Honor had gone to Roshar (E.G. "if Ruin and Preservation had settled on Roshar instead of creating Scadrial - what would Spren and Surges be like now?" or "If Invention had come to Roshar instead of Honor?")

Since we don't have a good timeline of how long after Vo the five scholars returned, nor how long they were studying Awakening before visiting Roshar, nor how long after visiting Roshar that the manywar blew up; it's difficult to say which innovations were simply discovered Commands and which were inspired by the Rosharan experience (TM - coming to a theme park near you). "Protect me" could very well have been either. However, I always thought that storing breath with an inactive Command to recover (breathe) it later reminded me of Radiants breathing in Stormlight. . .

Spook: Foreshadowed nickname 'cause I see dead people (well, a dead person) Shai: conflicted Forger - more stable version of Shallan (I'll become the version of me that can deal with this) Moash: (Elhokar alive) Revenge > Friendship / (Elhokar Dead) maybe not. . . oh well - in for a chip, in for a broam Dedelin: (Subconciously) Most families have the one person you still love, they are family after all, but you don't really like. Fortunately I can send mine to die in Hallandren Sixth: Must not share trapper secrets. "You're doing it wrong, let me help. . . " Concur. So I fixed the quote (the description is accurate though).

I think it would imply that the rhythms are a type of Cosmere Constant, even if the "pure tone" of each shard is unique
-
True. What I was curious about was if the emotion rhythms on Sel and Roshar matched. . .
-
Along with "When a Seon pulses in emotion, would a Singer recognize those rhythms?"

Very interesting theory. I'm not sure "quantity" is the defining factor here though. Is Cultivation better with Fortune because she accesses more Fortune; or is it, like Brandon has described Kell's iron and steel, a matter of facility/dexterity with the attribute? In which case, Investiture isn't ruled out because of parity in qty amongst the shards - the defining criteria would be more about how that investiture is shaped and utilized (diversity, complexity, etc.). Example: Endowment (also probably a "Fortune" shard, due to the nature of Returned and visions) manifests investiture as an end-neutral art (Awakening) and the process of Returning (can be argued as end-positive or neutral) which are fairly straight-forward at least compared to the Surges or Metallic Arts. Note: there also seems to be a connection between the number of Shards in a system and the complexity of the local investiture, as the "simpler" arts (Sand Mastery, Awakening) appear in mono-shardic systems.

I tried searching, to see if this has been discussed yet, so I apologize if this is an old idea. So, I'm re-reading Elantris for the first time since Rhythm of War, and I realized that Seons might be tapping into a "Cosmere constant" that, on Roshar, manifests in the singer rhythms. More specifically, there are a few instances of Seon's emotions being reflected in the pulsing (rhythm) of their inner light. Example: I don't know if anybody has ever asked Brandon if the Seon rhythms are similar/connected to the Singer rhythms; but this does not seem like a coincidence to me. (searching Arcanum only showed the "Selphone" pun) I thought I would post here, if just to start discussion. . .

My first inclination is Smoker/Archivist - Archivist because I love the idea of storing memories and Smoker because I have the feeling that copper compounding is going to be wild. But there's a lot unknown here. . . My second inclination is Slider/Subsumer - Subsumer because I love to cook, and eating/tasting whatever and just storing the energy for later sounds awesome. Slider, not because of the combat applications, but for the same reason as Archivist. Being able to read for hours of subjective time, but only spending an hour or so of objective time is appealing, and you would have to be a compounder to get that kind of time out of it (if there is even a way to reverse compound to expand the Allomantic ability) Ignoring compounding, I would probably have to go with Tineye/Subsumer to be Scadrial's "Iron Chef" - Excellent taste, and eat whatever to store the excess. . .If only because there is no F/F twinborn to be an Archivist/Subsumer.

What if the Fjordell Empire annexed Arelon?
Treamayne replied to ShardlessVessel's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
If you think back to Shai and Emporer's Soul, she says something to the effect of "the wall thinks of itself as a whole over time, the longer it is considered that way" [paraphrase] I would guess that if geopolitical boundaries changed, you wouldn't see much change in investiture geography until/unless the people living there started viewing the new situation as "normal." the text implies that Hrovell has been a province of Fjorden long enough that they consider themselves Fjordell (and long enough to develop a dialect of the language); but they are still distinct enough to have their own investiture (the potion thing) so it doesn't seem to be a quick change, if there is any change at all.- 14 replies

Elantrian Population Upper Limits
Treamayne replied to ShardlessVessel's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Sounds feasible I've always thought that the Shaod chose people the exemplified Devotion: e.g. Raoden's devotion to the people of Arelon Gallodon's devotion to Farming - including building his house with his own hands Mareshe's devotion to "Art" Taan's devotion to Sculpting Saolin's devotion to duty and Eondel etc. -
Agreed. Also, [theory] I think Scadrial-style snapping is "of preservation." More specifically: - We know that investiture requires cracks in the spirit web into which it can Connect - We know humans on Scadrial were created by Ruin and Preservation (in imitation of Yolen Humans) - We know humans on Scadrial have an extra "bit" of Preservation (which allowed sapience) - We know Preservation could hear thoughts, but not speak to people without a direct connection (Kelsier > Spook / Vin > Eland); and that Ati said that was because Preservation's power always tries to "fix the cracks" instead of using them to communicate *Therefore, if the power of Preservation naturally "shores up" the cracks investiture needs to take hold; so in TFE Snapping needed to be even more violent to get passed this effect; which is why the mists (Preservation's power) caused a violent mist sickness when trying to snap people.

Welcome to the forums. I don't know how many books you have read or if you are avoiding spoilers, so I will be fairly generic and just say: What is called "Snapping" on Scadrial isn't just an Allomancy thing. . .so I would not take that portion into account as a deterministic feature. Keep in mind that Ruin isn't just destruction - it is also entropy and change. In my "headcanon" the "Ruin" part of Feruchemy is that you must weaken yourself to get benefits later; and if you increase those benefits, Feruchemy has a rule of diminishing returns. e.g. Feruchemical Steel is not 1 hour slow = 1 hour fast = 30 minutes double-fast = 15 minutes triple fast The more you Tap, the faster you go through the storage:

We have to consider the possibility that there's a bit of "unreliable narrator" going on - we don't know that the executions were because of what Kell did at the pits (though he thought so) - it is just as likely that when Renoux was captured (though probably not exposed as a Kandra, or TLR would have just compelled answers due to the First Contract and spread the rumor that "Lord Renoux" was killed while captured) the obligators assumed that they were behind the burgeoning house war and the executions were because of that (even if they didn't connect the house war part of the plan to the rebellion part of the plan - or only connected it to "Yeden's Big Mistake"). I think this makes a lot of assumptions. What we really know is: - The perpedicularity at the Pits helped facilitate off-world trade - Felt was involved to some extent and became Cosmere aware through that exposure - At least some Worldhoppers knew the Pits could be used to access the Physical Realm on Scadrial However, we also know: - Off-world trae on Roshar happens in Shadesmar - but without being anywhere near a perpendicularity - Travel in Scadrial's Cognitive realm is . . . difficult for physical beings (especially if they have no means of applying investiture to cognitive aspects to make them solid enough to manipulate - like "Spanky" and the oar) - Drifter said "mercantile ecosystem" (which does not imply actual trade on Scadrial's CR - just that some "goods" from Scadrial were important to cosmere aware merchants and off-worlders) From this, I would guess that the pits were used to move "goods" from PR to CR (likely by Felt and a few other intermediaries); but the "market," if there was one, was probably on the solid part of Lake Luthadel (or similar location - more friendly to trade). I find it unlikely that more than a few WHs (like Hoid/Khriss) would have actually travelled all the way to the pits to access the perpendicularity themselves. This also implies that while knowledge of the perpendicularity might be fairly well-known off-Scadrial; there was not likely to be many with that knowledge on-world that could connect Perpendicularity = Pits = Atium (assuming they even knew enough about the metallic arts to know/care what Atium was or why it was important) Well, to be fair, he didn't give away the pits; merely that "House Venture mined Atium." He couldn't suspect that "rural Laady Valette" would already know about the Pits or that the Atium was mined there. TFE Ch 28

Possible continuity issue at the same location as this post. (MSH Part 6 Ch. 2 - line 80 in the epub editor) This takes place in the aftermath of Yomen's attack on the Koloss (HoA Ch 37), and he sees a vision of Penrod; but Marsh doesn't spike Penrod until HoA Ch 42. . . Passed is correct; as the adjective form of Pass (to pass) and has the definition: passed (not comparable) -That has passed beyond a certain point Past is a reference in time: "Adj.: Of a period of time: having just gone by"

I, too, thought there was a WoB; but have been unable to find it. I always imagined that TenSoon took it with him to the Homeland to add to the Trust - but I really just think it was a plot hole. . .

I'm enjoying the discussion and don't have much to add until I can get some time to mull things over. However, I thought it might be relevant to post some references for the discussion: The Dor, behaving as light upon entering the physical realm (even if it behaves more like plasma in the Cognitive Realm): The Scardrian Mists, being breathed in like Stormlight:

Szeth/Moash Parallels and Kaladin's Flute [Discuss]
Treamayne replied to Sara Stormblessed's topic in Stormlight Archive
Not only the scene in Oathbringer, we have the first indication that Nightblood's "test" still functions on Roshar back in Edgedancer If I recall correctly, For Nightblood's test, without the blade partially drawn, the effect is muted (Ref 1), repeated exposure minimizes the effect, and if Nightblood has fed off of somebody and they survived, then they are immune to the effect after that (Ref 2). Which would explain why Szeth doesn't remark on the effect much, especially after drawing Nigthblood in the Skybreaker trial. 1: In Warbreaker, we see that with the sheath on Nightblood can attract "evil," but we only see the reverse nausea effect if the blade is exposed: 2: This was a WoB: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/250/#e7404 -

I recently re-read Dresden Files, including all Short Stories, Graphic Novels and Novels in chronological order (if somebody needs a list, let me know) and it got me thinking... Could I do the same with Mistborn? Granted, it's not all discrete stories that can "neatly fit btwn novels X and Y," but it seemed possible. So this last week I set out to do just that. Has anybody else tried to do similar? I started with Eleventh Metal (Obviously), then moved on to Mistborn: The Final Empire (TFE) until Kelsier dies. I then attempted to "integrate" the chapters of Mistborn Secret History (MSH) where they take place while reading the rest of the first trilogy. Below is my attempt at codifying at which point in the trilogy I read each chapter/section of MSH. Though, in many spots the MSH chapters would need to be parsed out into scenes to be truly integrated. Thoughts, Ideas, Concerns? PS: Now starting Allow of Law for the remainder of my most-recent Mistborn read through

Actually, Stormfather all but tells him they are heralds: Dalinar's assumption, in my mind, is that the two people pointed out by Stormfather would be different orders than the seven knights he already counted. As far as Shalash being (or becoming) a Dustbringer, I'm not yet convinced. It requires the same assumption that Dalinar makes - that all ten orders were represented at the Battle of Thaylenah. Also, the argument of flashback characters, in my opinion, is moot. We learn about Radiant orders and their surges in the "present," not in the flashbacks. There is no reason that Ash's flashback book would mean she is also the Dustbringer in the book (assuming that will be the "Dustbringer" book).
