How do you think first half of SA will end?

Dalinar refused. That is why I think it isn’t over. And Honor hasn’t picked a Champion yet. -
How do you think first half of SA will end?
Toaster Retribution replied to Kelevra's topic in Stormlight Archive
There has been tons of theories on this. One is @RSharas favorite idea, about resurrecting the Oathpact, and having our new Radiants become Heralds. Another one is that Roshar is destroyed. My personal thought is that the Champion thing will be resolved at the end of 5, and I think that Rayse might be done for. But exactly how it ends... no idea. -
I think she will be what she already is. The story needs someone to command the Thaylens. She fills that role, but I think that will be what she does.

If you could give them anything...

I would give Hoid what he wants so that he doesn’t need to see Roshar burn.- 40 replies

What you don't want from the next book?
Toaster Retribution replied to MistboreD's topic in Stormlight Archive
I defenitely agree that Brandon means to portray Amaram as a zealot and I also think that zealotry is bad (I think most people agree about that :-) What I mean regarding Amaram is (like you say) that the driving force behind his zealotry should be exposed. In my mind that should help make him more symphatetic. I could be wrong though. But there are defenitely things in the books that point toward Amaram wanting to be good. And I would defenitely not say no to POVs that deepens Jasnahs character either. My main problem with her though is that I feel that she is too perfect. No matter what the problem is, Jasnah can solve it. That kind of bugs me a bit. But yeah, I will most likely not get what I want in terms of Amaram. Thats fine though, since Stormlight is an amazing series both with and without him. -
I am not interested in Navani as a Bondsmith. There are far more interesting alternatives. As for Gawx, it wouldn’t surprise me.

Does Brandon Sanderson have a favorite character?

Well, I know one thing, and that is that it aint Amaram. He usually says that it is the one he is writing at the moment. -

@Pathfinder Hah, I know that I am very alone in my Amaram-fondness. So no worries. I would love to ask Brandon a bit about Amaram if he ever makes it to Sweden. But I think every villain is improved if you can feel for them, or at least understand why they do what they do. POVs from Amaram would at the very least make his character and motives more clear, even if they didn’t provide more sympathy. Also, I kinda agree with both you and @Mason Wheeler regarding Jasnah. She is defenitely no psychopath. I do think that she is kinda brutal and cold in her solutions (her first solution to Renarins problem was to kill him as well, even though she changed her mind there). I feel that the line between her and Mr T for example, is rather blurry at times. But neither one is a psychopath I think (I am not doctor though, so I can’t say for sure). I defenitely feel like Jasnah gets away with stuff more often than anyone but Hoid and maybe Kelsier, and I’m not too happy with that. -
Kaladin would probably beat Jasnah in a fight. She can’t soulcast him I think.

Brandon has had main characters with huge secrets and POVs before. Jasnah above is one example. Another one from Mistborn is I think it would have worked out great. -

It wouldn’t need to be that much build-up. And if strenghtens the books climax, and the arc of its main characters, it wouldn’t really be a waste. A lot of people has said that Amaram was a main flaw with OB. This would fix that, maybe even turn it around. I can agree with that, and I also enjoyed the BridgePOVs. The reason I suggest cutting them is that they are minor characters, and all of them dont need POVs, even though they are nice to read. But Shallan/Veil could absolutely use a little less pages as well. -

In my mind, Amaram POV-chapters would have made his arc clearer and maybe allow readers to feel symphaty for him. That would have made for a stronger ending. Now his final scenes were basically Mario vs Bowser or something of that sort. A cool fight scene, but with less emotional impact than it could have. Giving Amaram POVs in OB would also have made sense because he is the anti-Dalinar. He would have worked brilliantly as a foil. Amaram kinda went down as a boring and plain bad guy for most people, while he could have gone down as an interesting antagonist who helped flesh out the story more. -

I agree about Bridge 4. I liked their chapters in OB, but I cant help but feel that cutting Skar, Sigzil and others would have allowed for Amaram POV chapters. Considering that his story is a major complaint from a lot of people, sacrificing Bridge 4 for Meridas might have made for a stronger book. Right now, it feels like Brandon made the opposite choice. If there is a similar situation in the future, where Brandon has to choose between fleshing out a villain or minor side characters, I would say go for the villain. -

@Bigmikey357 Adolin actually did exist in WoK prime. His name was Aredor and he died in a highstorm. -

The way it works is that you cant heal something that has become one with your identity. Kaladin for example, sees his scars as part of who he is, which is why they cant be healed. Long-term doesn’t reallt matter. Lopen can regrow his arm for example, even though he has been without it for a long time. -

Edgedancer is excellent though. And she is just being set-up for her main story in the back half. But this far she is kinda annoying. -

Also, I will be legit disappointed if Jenet never shows up again. She was awesome, and had way more personality than say, General Khal or even some of the bridgemen. -

The three biggest flaws with SA are (in my opinion): -The handling of Amaram in OB. I have talked about this before, but he had potential to be great, and was thrown to side, had all his development off-screen, and was then killed off in a boss battle. The arc itself isn’t that bad, but the execution is. -The fake-deaths. Although he is fixing that one. But the effect of those are showing. It took like three WoBs to convince people about that Eshonais death was for real. -Kaladin saves the day. This bugged me in WoR, where Kaladin was constantly saving everyone. Brandon fixed that in OB though, by having him be saved. As for the ongoing Dalinar debate, I think we could see him appearing in SA5-10 as well. Brandon hasn’t said that he wont be in those. And book 5 will have tons of Dalinar. -
Neutral ideas for what I want from the next book(s)
Toaster Retribution replied to Sedside's topic in Stormlight Archive
I want to see Sadeas kill all the main characters and develop a love triangle with Jasnah and Amaram. Nah, just kidding. I want to see Axies. We have a WoB that we probably will, but I want to see him studying KR spren in Urithiru. Also, Rysn and Ishar joining the main narrative, Chana appearing somewhere, and an epic fight involving Nale. -
So, I’m interested in the fact that Brandon has Shallan see similarities between Hoid and Mraize, when she first meets Mraize in WoR. This has to mean something. Brandon has never compared another character to Hoid the way he does with Mraize. So, is this a hint about a connection between Mraize and Hoid? Or is it a hint about something?

Brandon based Kaladin off Peter Pan

I think Brandon is inspired by tons of stuff. I have not seen Hook, but it is certainly possible that he based something off that movie. Also, I love the thread you linked! -

I also don’t want to not see Vivenna. She was great in OB. More Vivenna!
