  1. On page 385 of Hero of Ages, I found an interesting quote: The Stormfather gives Kaladin some interesting information as well: Doesn't this sound like an interesting coincidence of words? Maybe I'm missing something entirely, but do you think there's an in-Cosmere connection to what Elend is saying and what's happening on Roshar, or do you think this is just Brandon introducing this foreshadowing as an easter egg into the Stormlight Archive?
  2. I definitely warmed up to the format as the story went along, but man did we get the smallest possible taste of this world! I had the same feeling I did when I started reading The Walking Dead comics - it was great until I caught up to waiting for new releases, but each individual volume was always a let down. It's like the story is only so good until you can see the whole picture, which, if this is all we get per volume of White Sand, will leave me let down until we get it all. Though, I agree with some of the other reactions - the ending was in a really awkward place. Anyone remember when Brandon will be releasing the other two volumes of White Sand?
  3. I'm curious if Threnody is actually a planet that exists entirely or partially in the Cognitive Realm.
  4. Hmm...as in, "the Slammer?" That's an American expression for prison. I wonder if somehow Tanavast (Honor) used Cultivation as the vehicle for binding Odium to the Greater Roshar system. Perhaps the reason we don't hear about Cultivation very much is because this wasn't completely voluntary on her part. Talk about a horrible twist on the concept of honor being dead, using the woman you love as a means to an end!
  5. So I'm curious about how much this first volume of White Sand will tell us about the greater cosmere story we're all dying to uncover. I've heard rumors about this planet Taladin and I requested a copy of the unpublished works a week or two ago, but haven't heard back (hopefully that means Brandon and crew are hard at work pulling off a surprise early release of Oathbringer along with the Arcanium Unbounded this fall!) Without spoilers, how much insight into the cosmere do you think we'll get from this graphic novel?
  6. Perhaps Hoid (and Mraise, with his Ghostbloods) are attempting to collect the cosmere's version of the Dragon Balls?
  7. This idea I like. There's a thread on here somewhere about "Rust" (of the Era 2 curse, "Rust and Ruin!") being the piece of Ruin that Sazed had to remove from Harmony to be able to balance out (as Preservation exists in all humans, making the two shards unbalanced). The idea of Rust (similar idea to Corruption) would fit with what sounds like happened to Threnody, and I can imagine Sazed sending it there to keep it's influence away being (in his eyes) a decent choice for the preservation of Scadrial. We know there's a connection between Scadrial and Threnody, as they appear close to one another in the Cognitive Realm, not just in physical space. I look forward to seeing the outcome of this great "Rust" mystery!
  8. Technically, if we think about it, Mistborn Era 1 (i.e. Kelsier, Vin, Elend) are all approximately 1,000 years after the Ascension of TLR. There's an entire Mistborn Era 0.5, or Era -1 that could possibly shed light on this. I wonder how much TLR meddled in cosmere affairs. Perhaps he sent the kandra out and about? How awesome would it be to have the kandra return to Sazed one day, incredibly confused at what has transpired since they've been gone!
  9. I've been re-reading Mistborn and something hit me as I'm thinking about these powers preparing to hit the cosmere-scale of the story. Does a copper cloud hide all active use of Investiture AND does Brass enable a Seeker to detect any use of Investiture? These skills seem like they'd be really helpful for spying knowing that Scadrial is going to eventually explore other worlds in the cosmere, I'm wondering if we know anything about these powers yet.
  10. Wait, I'm not sure I understand the reference to malatium being gold "fueled" by Ruin. Are you saying that a Vessel can directly endow some kind of specific power? As in, was malatium real or was it an allusion used by Ruin? While it seems somewhat useless as a power, I thought it was still occurred because of natural allomantic reasons.
  11. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I really thought the Biblical allusions were a pretty cool catch, but since this theory isn't getting a lot of chatter, I'm wondering if I'm missing something blatantly obvious (Like a WoB that disproves it, or an obvious reference in the books?)
  12. An odd, interesting factoid, but it seems pretty random to me. If you're connecting "odious" with "Odium," it would be odd for the number 16 to be somehow specifically linked to one shard alone.
  13. What I find interesting is that the problem with the Elantrians was their transformation was stuck, that for some reason, the power of the Dor could not pierce through the barrier between the Cognitive Realm and the Physical Realm. When Raoden became a Hoed, it seemed that his consciousness remained stuck in a place where he either experienced extreme pain or, as the alternative that most Hoed seem to take, extreme numbness. Getting dropped in the shardpool didn't seem to transport Raoden immediately anywhere, but rather "something" offered him the comfort of what I would assume would be a swift passage into the Spiritual Realm, or the great beyond. I would assume this "something" was the voice of what might be a cognitive shadow of Aona/Skai (either/or, both/and), however because Raoden resisted (which we learned from MB SH is possible for individuals with more Investiture) he was able to come back into the Physical Realm (possibly because it wasn't possible to safely exist in the Cognitive Realm at that time). Maybe this Perpendicularity wasn't functioning properly as a passage to the Cognitive Realm prior to the reboot of Elantris, which is why Hoid couldn't use it until things were fixed up (and because he was hopeful his meddling would transform him into an Elantrian).
  14. What?!? We have quotes from the final Mistborn trilogy? Could you give a source for this? I didn't know such information existed!
  15. I can honestly say that I fall in love with every world again each time I re-read one of his books! I like Elantris (mainly because I feel like I've got a really good hunch about the two shards' pasts there), but the Stormlight Archive is just so epic! Warbreaker would possibly be my favorite, but we have so little information about the world on which it takes place that, until we get more, will just feel incomplete to me. Mistborn will always be the book that got me started on this amazing world, and the original trilogy is just hands down one of the best progressions of plot I've ever read. If I had to put a finger on one, it'd be Words of Radiance because I feel we learn the most about greater Cosmere events from it. That back story is my favorite and I'll be enjoying Brandon's books for decades to come until it al unfolds! =) What about yours? What's the long story about cookies? :-P
  16. I realize I've been posting a lot lately, but also realized I've never said hello to everyone officially! =) One of my closest friends recommended I read the Wheel of Time a few years ago, and I couldn't make it through more than the first half of the first book. I swore I'd never allow him to recommend a book to me again. Then he recommended Mistborn to me, which I said was his absolute, final, last chance before I revoked his recommendation card forever. I can be intense like that Needless to say, it was one the of the best stories I'd ever read, and I quickly gobbled up everything Brandon has written in the cosmere (and even The Reckoners which, dang it, REALLY seem like they could be)! I was blessed to meet Brandon on his Calamity tour earlier in the year and, even though my friend moved to Alabama, I made sure he shared in the moment with me by FaceTiming him in to meet Brandon together with me. I've never been an online forum person before, but I really enjoy these stories (and theorizing about stories and puzzles a la LOST) and I look forward to being a regular poster here with you all!
  17. Do we have any kind of an update on timeline for a movie? The OP was from like 6 years ago!
  18. Brandon has done an amazing thing with the hidden story behind the story. He'll keep my attention for decades to come! May the God Beyond grant you great health and a continued passion for writing, Brandon! =)
  19. I'm curious that "adonalsium" has the suffix "ium," much like the god metals of Scadrial (i.e. Atium, Lerasium). Knowing that Adonai is a Hebrew word for God, it's possible that this idea of "adonalsium" is just the super epic power that humans attributed to God (who may exist in the Great Beyond of the Spiritual Realm in the cosmere). Think about it - over time, humans attain access to the power of divinity, they fight about it, the power is split up, epic quest to reunite the power...then they fight about it again, the power is split up...rinse, lather, and repeat. I lean more towards adonalsium being the culmination of Investiture force/power that humans discovered in the Spiritual Realm in the ancient past. Could Sazed be the one to gather the power together again? He tricked us once before by hiding his role in the narrative behind a bunch of other leading characters, so I wouldn't put it past him!
  20. In good humor to the OP, I couldn't stop laughing when I read this - "very independent and strong will(ed)" - YEP MUST BE GAY! I agree entirely. One of my favorite parts of reading stories is just that - they're stories. In real life, humans have deep and complex themes and attributes - stories only convey what of any of these are relevant to a character's role. It's up to our imagination to fill in the gaps. Jasnah ain't got time for romance - she's too busy trying to save the world!
  21. Upvote to Sitroentje! Good catch. I still think there's some kind of connection, even if it's a similar culture or from a similar era of time, between the Dawncities and Elantris.
  22. As I've been combing through old quotes from Brandon over the years (some of which go back over a decade!) I was wondering if anyone could give me a clear answer to Brandon's plans for his greater cosmere story line. It sounds like a part of his writing strategy (brilliant, might I add) is that he writes stand alone series that are works of art in their own right, but won't require people to read all of his books to understand them. Some quotes, especially older ones, seem to indicate that his plans for the greater cosmere story line will "come together eventually," but for now any hints of this in the books will only be easter eggs for dedicated fans (easter eggs that eventually show connection to everything, but nothing relevant until that point). That said, does Brandon have concrete plans to finish/explain the cosmere mythos or does he seem more dedicated to the separate stories/series that take place within it, leaving the cosmere as an enduring mystery? Letting the cosmere and the history of The Shattering and the events thereafter in a nebulous place that he'll only explain once he's written everything else? I've only been reading his work for the past year or so, but I'm not sure how his plans have changed since he started writing all of these wonderful books. Thanks for your info everyone! =)
  23. Curses Theoryland database! I do remember hearing this, however since there wasn't a notation for this quote when I found it in passing, it slipped my mind entirely. I wonder though, perhaps in the fatigue of touring, Brandon gave us a Freudian slip - that there IS a connection between Sel and Threnody. It's pretty strongly implied that the Ire are of Selish descent, and they're worried about shades from Threnody, from which they have a massive fort to keep them safe. Technically, a planet in the Cognitive Realm wouldn't be in the same Physical Realm planetary system as another, and they wouldn't revolve around the "same" star, as it seems the sun/star in Shadesmar is different than the one in the Physical Realm. What do you think Oudeis? The idea of an entire planet existing entirely in (or partially in) the Cognitive Realm just seems too interesting for me to pass up completely!
  24. The reason Elantris stopped working properly was because the shape of the land, meaning the shape of the aon on which Elantris was patterned, had changed. This obviously speaks to a very intentional design of the city of Elantris, one focused on a specific pattern. The city is obviously much older than we know (or even the people of Raoden's time know), but how old, and where did it come from? This idea of a city laid out in a specific way sparked a connection in my mind to the Dawncities on Roshar. They too had interesting, intricate patterns to them, and the cites were believed to be very, very old. I wonder, did the same group of people who built Elantris on Sel also happen to build/influence the Dawncities on Roshar?
  25. Especially since it seems like he was involved in some patriotic work, transporting supplies secretly with his band of supposed countrymen. Maybe he thought is he could show how deeply he cared about the well-being of Arleon, once Elantris "worked" again he would be transformed. I don't think his assumption is correct though, that patriotism to Arleon determines who gets taken by the Shaod. We know so little about the history of aons (and Elantris itself really) that it makes it really hard to know beyond random chance why someone becomes an Elantrian.
