I would think that one of the Ideals of the Dustbringers would be: "I will stop the spread of evil." or "I will stand up against the advancement of evil." It fits the idea of abrasion in the idea of stopping evil in its tracks, and the idea of standing up for what is right, stopping for a second and saying, "This is wrong." It fits the idea of bravery as well. I could see Adolin saying these words or something similar when justifying Sadeas's fate.

I would think that something stuck to a wall with stormlight has a very strong perpendicular attachment to the wall in the same way weight sticks Lift to the ground while she is sliding, but the Abrasion change would allow the object to move laterally on the wall without falling off.

Highstorms originate from the Origin, which is in the East. They travel east to west, whereas the Everstorm comes from the west. Looking at the map of Roshar in the books gives the Leeward and Stormward directions that verify this.

Songs That Make You Think of Stormlight Archive
Battar replied to Random Observations R Me's topic in Stormlight Archive
Like Spinning Plates - Kaladin as he detests the highprinces' games and snobbishness while his friends die in bridgeruns. Particularly powerful. You and Whose Army - for the scene where Dalinar survives Sadeas's betrayal and forfeits his Shardblade. Just - anything with Nalan in it, particularly the Ym scene. Talk Show Host - Dalinar, when thinking about assassins in the night and Sadeas. I Will - When thinking about the Listeners who grew up under assault from the Alethi, just trying to protect their children from war. Reckoner - Makes me think about the larger workings of Honor, Cultivation, and Odium. You could say I have a thing for Radiohead... -
https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/3suo4l/oathbringer_i_think_flashback_dalinar_is_based/ In the link above, Brandon says that Khan was his inspiration for the plot in the scene, so take that as you will. It's likely just the inspiration for Dalinar's resourcefulness and practicality rather than brutality, which is something people didn't always realize about Khan.

Nale Ponderance now with WoR spoilers!
Battar replied to Orlion Blight's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't think we know enough about what Nale meant when he said Szeth was now cleansed of his past doings. I find it more likely that he said this because he knows how much Szeth was tormented by his actions and is wanting to keep Szeth from falling down the path of becoming Odium's "champion". Why would Nale kill these radiants-in-the-making if he was just going to revive them again? That question can only be answered with more info on whether this process is actually cleansing or just something he said to Szeth to make him feel better about joining the Skybreakers. -
The Surge Regrowth and Kaladin's Various Powers
Battar replied to KasA97's topic in Stormlight Archive
http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/7197-syl-but-ive-helped-men-kill-before/ This thread gives some good evidence for this theory, but it isn't a straight up WoB that she is pre-Recreance. -
Thanks, Peter. We can now sleep soundly tonight

I think it's worthwhile to hold Brandon accountable for inconsistencies of any size, as long as we do keep in mind that he's human and they aren't the worst things in the world. I'm sure he would want us to, at least. I would think that he would let his editor know if there was a conformed inconsistency and rectify it for future prints.

I agree, that is an interesting way of saying it. I wouldn't usually think of death as a spark, more like a flame flickering out, but that might just be evidence that my normal way of thinking isn't complete.

I think you're right, but that isn't the whole story. I think "death is my life" makes this pretty clearly about Szeth because of how entangled Szeth's life has been with the deaths of others. It also says to me that Szeth will become Odium's champion through how much death he has caused and how much hatred he has felt, both for himself and his enemies. I'm of the opinion that Szeth won't become a Skybreaker because of his ties to Odium, and that Nalan will have somehow solidified him as Odium's champion rather than help cleanse him. The spiritual and physical ties of Szeth to life have been broken, and that brings him closer to what I would think of as an Unmade than anything, something that will put Voidbinding to use rather than Surgebinding (which I'm of the opinion will use death as a central point of power).

Very much agree. I think the calendar and orbital patterns are much more impactful in the realm of astronomy or moon patterns, which are much more interesting. Edit: I need more info on astronomy in the Roshar system. I've read the Moons on Roshar thread, but most of that info is from early 2014 and I want to know the details of the system canonically.

As far as I know, spren don't seek out listeners for the Nahel Bond, they only seek out humans. There might be the possibility for someone like The Lopen to be a KR, but I highly doubt a listener could bond a spren other than those which give them forms like dullform, stormform, mateform, etc.

I love this WoB, and I really want to read more in future books about how this all came about. It's fascinating and largely puts our own world into context.

Are there any updates in Words of Radiance that gave us more information about the moons?

I think you are thinking of Rosharan physiology too much like that of Earth. Different cultures and physics (like having .7x the gravity on earth) have profound effects on physiology. Lower gravity means much of the body will be underdeveloped early on compared to Earth, and it would take more physical activity to have the same muscle mass as an Earth human. Societal differences might also evolve humans on Roshar to develop mentally later or earlier than on Earth. I also think Adolin behaves like a petulant child sometimes, but at others his acts much more mature and honorably (see the scene with the whore in Sadeas's camp). Kaladin certainly acts older than his age would have you believe most of the books, as does Shallan. But too many things go into mental and physical maturity that just knowing a few things about the calendar won't solve the mystery.

I'd say it's likely that Vasher simply has a ton of Breaths at this point, but it could be he uses Stormlight as well. He says to Kaladin that the Storms are "cursed things, Invested to the hilt and looking for a place to put it all." He also says he makes the decision between two equally crappy options every day he chooses to keep living, which tells me he has to use the Breaths he has stored up to keep living. Though I'm not sure, because it likely just requires something Invested for the person to feed on, which could be Stormlight, but we have no idea the "transfer rate" of Investiture within Stormlight. I'd be interested to know it, though, because it could give us a clue on how much Stormlight Nightblood will require from Szeth (likely just a bit at first and compounds exponentially as time goes on).

I think you are right in thinking that Voidbinding or the Unmade has something to do with death, like bringing death or bringing one closer to death. I think it's likely that in some way either killing or using the bodies of the dead ties into Voidbinding in some way. This would explain why the Parshendi are so protective of the dead and how wary they are of doing things they feel are close to what their gods used to do. I also think it's likely that Voidbinding is an end-negative art, similar to Hemalurgy on Scadrial. Surgebinding is definitely end-positive to me, and Voidbinding is eerily symmetrical to Surgebinding in some ways.

Brandon has said he didn't mean for there to be a trend going where the titles of his books were books in the story, it just so happened to be that way. Stones Unhallowed I would very much doubt is a book.

I agree in thinking that certain kinds of gems likely give off different colors because of the capacity or efficiency of holding in Stormlight. It might be that when glowing or using Stormlight, the way that you use it gives off a different color light depending on what surges you have access to. Sort of like certain fabrials depend on a certain kind of gem, the Surges you use that fabrials mimic would determine what color you glow.

I'm curious about this process as well, but I haven't read Elantris, so someone else might have to add in some information from that SpiritWeb/worldview regarding how exactly the magic system has changed after Splintering. What I gather from thinking about these magic systems and Shards being Splintered is that the process is both arduous and taxing. I think the reason it is that way is that it requires careful action on Odium's part to pervert or manipulate a world's SpiritWeb in a way that changes how people use or participate in the magic systems facilitated by things like the Splintering of Honor, Cultivation, Devotion, and Dominion. These actions from Odium are meant to sow chaos where he can and divide those who participate in the magic systems (such as the Knights Radiant or people practicing in AonDor or others) from the Shards that fuel them. It could be that Odium Splinters a Shard by uniting people against a Shard's true intent, effectively people "losing faith", but in a way that uses that magic system to do it. An example would be Voidbinding, as it seems to pervert the usage of Surgebinding (evidenced by the anti-symmetry seen in glyphs of the Voidbinding chart) into something that isn't at all what Honor intended. I'm really not sure about all of this, but I do feel as though the difficulty in Splintering a Shard comes from the realy gritty work that goes into sowing hatred and chaos in the SpiritWeb through perversions of things like Dominion's Intent or Honor's Intent. Honor likely Splintered himself to create the Oathpact and the Heralds that trapped Odium on Roshar during Desolations. The Oathpact seems to have been a way to use the perversion of Surgebinding to try and keep Odium Splintered in pieces he tried to use to give Voidbinding its potency.

I don't see why this woman can't be Cultivation. We know she is apparently better at foreseeing the future than Honor, which puts her more in line with Voidbinding.
