  1. From what I understand about fabrials, you need to trap a spren in a gemstone to make them work. The Parshendi took this concept and used it to make changing to a specific form easier, more predictable. Basically, fabrials do a simplified version of Surgebinding, with the spren assisting with the fabrials' function. I know of no way to do this with metals, but perhaps Hemalurgy could do it.
  2. As for if Hoid is a Herald, probably not, as I believe he denied that in WoR. However, I am quickly growing fond of the theory that Hoid is the holder of one or more Splinters.
  3. It seems that which Shards called Sel home prior to Shattering is a matter of confusion. I believe the Shards are Devotion and Dominion. The Elantrians all seem to be devoted to something: Galladon to agriculture, Aiden to numbers, Raoden to AonDor and his people, Taan with his sculpting, etc. Along with that, using AonDor requires intense devotion to learning how to properly draw the Aons and memorizing all the lines that change how that Aon works. The practitioners of Dakhor required the complete domination over others to grant powers such as transportation, a twisted version of body armor, and neutralizing AonDor. As to any argument about how they are opposites, devotion is loyalty to one's followers, dominion is loyalty to one's superiors.
  4. If someone wants to discuss Sel's Shards, you can find me on the Elantris spoiler board.
  5. I have an extremely similar question, does every shard correspond with a metal in Scadrial? Excepting atrium and latvium. With the opposites: Devotion is the process of gaining leadership through love, Dominion is the process of gaining leadership through fear. Honor is about subjecting people to all sorts of demanding circumstances, and the ones that stand like stone are the ones that survive. Cultivation is about strengthening those who are weak, protecting them, basically the difference between the standards for children and warriors. Doesn't it make sense that the opposite Shards would live on the same planet? That said, what is Odium's opposite? The wandering Shard versus the man who, every time we learn something new about him, raises more questions: Hoid.
  6. I think I know what Devotion's Shardpool is: Elantris itself.
  7. From the events in Mistborn, Shards can appear as physical beings, but they don't do it often, possibly because it's difficult, possibly because it leaves them open to being killed like Leras. This doesn't explain how Odium can shatter Shards, but maybe it's related.
  8. I can accept that he has a Splinter, though it doesn't explain much.
  9. I would like to address reincarnation. Sarene in Elantris and Shallan in Stormlight Archives are very similar: Stubborn, good in courts, witty, a scholar, etc., Raoden, Kaladin, and maybe Kelsier are all similar as well: Thrust into a situation almost worse than death, they make the best of it, becoming the leader of a group of people whose lives are dangerous and had long ago given up hope, his sole purpose being improving the quality of life his followers enjoy. There are differences, though, Raoden always smiling opposed to Kaladin's perpetual scowl, Sarene unable to make anything artistic as opposed to Shallan having, probably, the best artistic skills in Roshar. I know this reply is long, but I think that major players in one book tend to find their way into other books, though who or what in the Spiritual Realm regulates the system, I couldn't say.
  10. Hoid is known to have spent time with many of the Shardholders, such as Rayse, Ati, and Tanavast. Since he has such close association with the Shardholders, it seems very unlikely that he doesn't have a Shard. So, why shouldn't he have one? Completely gambling, I would like to suggest that his Shard's intent be mischief, because Hoid is unable to cause people physical harm, is known in his role as Wit for being harmless, but knowing too much, and Rock has met Hoid, saying that Hoid was a god of mischief, and unable to harm anybody. However, this is shaky evidence at best, and so his intent could be something else.
  11. Sanderson is known for his cryptic answers. I maintain hope.
  12. In Firefight, David finds Prof doing chemical reactions he had performed for his class, saying they seemed to push the evil Epic thoughts down, and Megan said spending time with David also helped push down the thoughts. We know Megan loves David, and it's reasonable to assume that Prof loved his students. While facing their fears was how to permanently get rid of their Epic thoughts, it seems that the things they love also help with those. This probably applies only to the Epic's that were good before they became an Epic, like Conflux, Firefight, and Prof. Also, Megan said she would strangle someone if the secret was the power of love. Let's hope David has a thick neck. Or at least some bad metaphors.
  13. It has been established that an Epic's weakness comes from their worst fear. However, we don't know where an Epic's powers come from. Prof got his powers when an Epic attacked his class. One can only imagine what he felt, seeing his class injured, some under rubble, with more rubble impending. He got forcefields to protect the children from debris, evaporation to remove the rubble, and healing and gifting to heal them. Mitosis was angry that he had to rely on the other members of the band, so he gained the ability to be a one-man band. Steelheart wanted to dominate people, to rule them with a steel grip. He got his wish with invincibility, flight, turning things to steel, and energy blasts. Epic weaknesses come from their worst nightmares, what if their powers come from their fondest dreams?
  14. To explain the Cosmere, we need to explain the Realmatic Theory, Hoid, Adonalsium, the Shattering, Odium... Basically, from a nonlinear, nonperspective point of view, the Cosmere is a big ball of wibbly wobbly, Shardy-wards...stuff.
  15. I don't believe AonDor has much to do with the Spiritual Realm, except that it is somehow related to the Spiritweb. Nobody can argue that, especially with its connection to the Cognitive Realm, Forging is simply a variation on Soulcasting. While all magic systems involve all three realms, they tend to focus on one realm. I'm not saying that the abilities are exclusive to one realm, simply that the realms are a focus for the abilities. As for the intent, Devotion is primarily in the mind, like memorizing a set of symbols that must be made perfectly, or being devoted to the study of an object to change it.
  16. Can Shallan Forge things? Like, go into Shadesmar, and change a chair into a nicer chair. Would Shallan need Stormlight for that?
  17. Morgan Freeman is Edward. No questions. Also, Justin Beiber as Mitosis. I just want to see him melt.
  18. A washing machine at a gun show
  19. Do you think that Brandon Sanderson just looks at some of these forums and either laughs or scratches his head? Being completely serious, we are talking about a Doomsday bunker created by Allomancy.
  20. Before Raoden restored Elantris, it was known that they could be killed by fire. Perhaps the term 'nearly immortal' refers to their ability to die from injuries they don't have time to heal, like decapitation. Perhaps they would keep the population down like the Returned, choosing to commit suicide by jumping in that pool, which may be a Shardpool. I have literally no clue.
  21. Three things.First, Sanderson has said that Harmony is the most powerful being in the Cosmere. It is unlikely that Rayse could defeat him. Second, isn't Rayse trapped on his own planet? I realize that the whole Desolation thing might throw that off but... Third, could we start calling Odium by his Shardholder's name, Rayse? We do that for Sazed, why not Rayse?
  22. I see no reason why they shouldn't have Realmatic preferences. Devotion's magic systems are focused on the Cognitive realm, with AonDor having Soulcasting and Forging affecting the Cognitive realm almost exclusively. On the other hand, non of the Metallic Arts on Scadrial have any Soulcasting abilities. In addition, Endowment's magic system seems to have roots only in the Spiritual Realm, with the only Physical realm abilities being better health, perfect pitch, and increased sight.
  23. It seems that the discussion has wandered away from the point (or one of them) about what makes Hemalurgy the most important Metallic Art. Both Feruchemistry and Allomancy focus on the physical realm, while touching on the other realms. From the wording that Sanderson gives in the Ars Arkenaum(pardon the spelling), he uses the term Spiritweb. I have little idea what the Spiritweb is, but it seems that that alone makes Hemalurgy the most important Art, since we know so little about the Spiritual Realm.
  24. On Scadrial, the metals are separated into physical, mental, temporal, and enhancement abilities. There seems to be some focus on different realms with different Shards: Preservation and Ruin, for example, are physical Shards, since their traits are purely physical. Honor seems to be focused on the Cognitive realm, or mental realm, given the importance of spren and Shadesmar in the story. Since there are four classes of metals, it stands to reason that we are missing a realm. Any questions? Suggestions? I would appreciate any potential insight into a possibility of a fourth realm. P.S. Oh, and for those that say that Sanderson has told us time and time again there are three realms, he also told us there were eight metals.
  25. I realize that no official connection has been made, but there seems to be too much connection for it to not be associated at some level
