It seems like every Shard gets one thing named after them. Aona got Aons. Ati got Atium. Leras got Lerasium. Skai gets creatures- they're called Skaze. They are apparently "evil Seons" who have a lot to do with the politicking in Fjordell. (They tell Dilaf that Elantrians can be killed). The magic name is usually Dahkor, after the Monastary that trains the monks in this magic.

Craftygames Interview Tonight! Post Questions Here!
Zas678 replied to KChan's topic in Events and Signings
I'm not sure. However, I think those of us at BYU/Provo/Orem should definitely get a game going. Anyone else in? -
You're not the only one..... Oh, and Welcome! We love new members! Which of the books is your favorite?

Brandon said something interesting. He said that WoK handled Shallan's first apprenticeship. I wonder who else she could be apprenticed to? So that's why I think another option for Shallan is when she gets to the Shattered Plains to be Navani's Apprentice. It would be great (from our point of view) to get a lot more info about fabrials and spren. But it doesn't have that same "fun" potential that being Kaladin's assistant would. And my prediction for a far-off book is that Shallan becomes Hoid's Apprentice. That would be FANTASTIC.

Let's see here. Is Marsh in the next novel? Well... AoL Intro (Note- TenSoon could still be around, and he still has Kelsier's bones. Why are they meeting? No idea.)HoA Q&A B&N Q&A As for the why? I don't know. Maybe Sazed granted it to him. Or maybe Ruin wanted a minion. Or he wanted to punish some Feruchemist, and all the other Inquisitors around had all the other useful Feruchemist powers.
-
I think part of it is a Reward to Marsh for his part in Ruining the Final Empire. Think about it- with Marsh's help, the Empire of Ruin's enemy finally fell. As to why give powers to a Seeker? Perhaps the Atium spike, which you mentioned. I also am not sure that there were any Mistborn Inquisitors. *shudders* That would be insane to have double powers though. But there are very few Mistborn, and they are so valuable that the Nobility isn't likely to let them into the hands of the Ministry. But truth be told, I'm not sure. Perhaps convenience. Marsh just ended up being in the right places at the right times.

Huh. That'd be interesting. I've got a piecemeal version working. I've got a folder on my computer with the ebook versions of Warbreaker & HoA on it, as well as the Brandonothology (check my sig) which has all the annotations, interviews & Q&As that we have access to. For the rest of the books, I just use Amazon's "Look inside" feature for their books. But it would be nice to have a big database of all that. Oh, by the way, Welcome! I've really enjoyed some of your posts so far.

Hey Songstress! Welcome to 17th Shard! I understand you're feeling about forum-readings. However, I must recommend that you Stay Away from the General Theories thread until you've read all the books. But besides that, Welcome! I can't wait to hear some of your opinions!

Which came first - Elantris or the first Shaod?
Zas678 replied to darniil's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
It doesn't say. All it says is that "they came from other lands." This could mean other Selian lands, or perhaps something else. They did already have a leader (in fact they had a King), and so they moved in and a generation or two later became Elantrians. -
wha?!?

Which came first - Elantris or the first Shaod?
Zas678 replied to darniil's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
So then the question comes- Where did the modern-day Aonic people come from? -
Catalyst21, I agree completely. Let me rephrase some of the things you have said. The only two changes that could cause the return of the Seons is the Return of Elantris, and the Restoration of the Elantrians. I don't see how Seons would be affected by the Return of Elantris, since they weren't affected by the Fall of Elantris. No, they were only affected by the Fall of the Elantrians. So, they must be linked to that. I believe that there are two sort of energies going on with Seons. I think their original energy came from the Splintering of Aona. However, I think that their Continuing Energy comes from the Humans they serve. In the book, it mentions how it seems like the Seons are always needing to serve, to have a master. I think this is partially do to the Intent of Aona, but also because their is a sort of Nahel Bond between a Master and the Seon. *WoK spoilers! (But only slightly) In WoK, Syl bonds with Kaladin, and while Kaladin gets some magical powers, Syl gets a stronger Cognitive Presence. I think that this is the Nahel Bond, and that this happens with Seons too. Seons serve their masters, helping them, guiding them, serving them. They are bonded to their masters and to their intelligence. A pre-restoration Elantrian isn't able to be targeted by Aons; indeed, this is why their bodies didn't heal all the way. So, when a Master becomes Elantrian, his Seons goes crazy, because the Seon's Bond to the Cognitive Realm is shattered, living the Seon mindless and voiceless. However, when Elantris is restored, the Elantrians can be affected by Aons again, and so the Seons come back in force. I suppose that leaves the question- what if their Master died? I suppose that tehy would bond with the first person they see, until they could find a new master. That's my theory.

The Kae factor was a mistake on Brandon's part. See this thread: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/21-i-think-i-found-an-uh-oh-warning-probable-spoilers/

I never took the SAT (which is the one that is in the hundred's range). But I did take the ACT, like 5 times. Want to know what's sad? One of the times I took it, I studied like mad. I took a class, went all the way through one of those test books, spent hours taking pre-tests... and got the same score as before. The next time I took the ACT, I took only 1 practice test, and I got a better score. So though I do believe that studying does help (I'm pretty sure that that better score was partially because of my massive studying last time), know that the tests have a lot to do with luck, and how you're doing that day. Also, I've never been asked my PSAT score. Don't sweat about it. If you do well and get a scholarship, Great! If you don't, it doesn't really matter. There's a lot more local scholarships that are easier to get. @Eerongal- I'm pretty sure that you took the ACT. And 31 is a pretty nice score. (though I did better by a point! hehehe)

WARNING: slight Mistborn Spoilers My old personal theory (which I'm not sure is true anymore) was that the Dor and the Power of Preservation (which powers Allomancy) are the same thing. A (for our purposes) limitless, endless energy that magic users access that is the leftover of Adonalsium. It explains why Preservation didn't seem to be drained by people using Allomancy. However, I think a better idea would be that when Aona and Skai died, their energies were left, mostly unguided, until they eventually merged. Then anyone who tried to access it would see the same thing- the Dor. This would mean that before Odium, the two powers were separate. Where is all this unbound, wild, energy? Easy- Shadesmar. Brandon wrote in someone's book that "You wouldn't want to visit the Shadesmar in Sel." This could very well be because that's where the Dor is. Anyone who visits Sel meets this great wild energy- Sort of like a big forest fire.

In-world they think they are only used to steal Allomantic Temporal Abilities. (See the Back of HoA). But Brandon has said that if you know how, Atium could steal any of the metals. I may or may not find quotes for these in the morning. They'll be in here somewhere.' EDIT- Quote 1- Here's one from the annotations.

For Hemalurgy, don't forget that Vin was a Hemalurgist and her only spike was through her ear. There's more than one bind point for Spikes to give powers. It seems likely to me that TLR had some small spikes to augment his abilities. Don't forget that Ruin was talking to him a ton throughout his life, which seems to imply Hemalurgy. It also could be that some of it is show. I wouldn't be surprised if TLR had Soothers hidden in the crowd to help strengthen his own Soothing.

True. But I think there's a difference between partnered Shards (like Ruin and Preservation), and other shards. They have been partnered together, and they both use metal for their magic. I guess it would be possible for Nightblood to be from another Shard (magic wise- I mean look at the Shardblades), but I still don't think so. It still runs off of Breath, like other Awakened objects, it was made by Breath by a Returned in Nalthis, and Vasher considers it an Awakened Sentinent Non-Living Creation (or something to that affect).
-
The only trouble with that is that his Source of power is Breath- just like Awakening, & Returned. No where in the Cosmere have we seen one Shard use another's source, unless they were on the same planet. Breath are of Endowment, and in order to use Breath, you must be of Endowment. Nightblood still is of Endowment because he was Endowed with Breaths to be made. EDIT-Didn't make sense first time.

Question about unreleased works
Zas678 replied to MasterGhandalf's topic in General Brandon Discussion
My understanding was that the trunk novels were novels that are standalones, or maybe just have sequels. The Core novels, (Dragonsteel, Way of Kings, and Mistborn) are all series with 7-10 books in them. 7ish for Dragonsteel, 9 (well I guess 10 now) for Mistborn, and 10ish for Way of Kings. -
A possible connection between Hoid and Adolnasium
Zas678 replied to Dagorian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
We do know that Hoid is one person. The Hoid in Elantris is the Hoid in WoK, who is the Hoid in Mistborn. I'm too lazy to find the quote right now. I am pretty sure that he was pretty involved with the Shattering. He seems to know many of the Original Shardholders. -
We have been told, back before the days of WoK, that besides Ruin and Preservation, we have seen 4 shards. We were told that we had interacted with 2 directly, we had seen the influence of another, and the power of yet another. Now we have those 4. We've interacted with the Pool in Elantris (Aona), the Voice in Warbreaker (Endowment), the influence by the killing of Aona and Skai (Odium), and the power of the Dahkor monks/Skaze (Skai). That's all four, and Brandon has said that not every planet has two shards. See: Roshar, with Odium, Honor, and Cultivation. Edit: Formatting

Not Cosmere-wise unfortunately. I'm debating between Robin, Dr. Horrible, or Captain Hammer.

I made two dishes lately that I'm proud of. Okenomiyaki (or Japanese Pancake as we've nicknamed it), and Raspberry-Balsamic-Vinegar Chicken. Okenomiyaki is 1/2 a cabbage sliced thin, mixed in with some pieces of ham, and enough flour, egg and water to make a "pancake like" concoction that is mostly cabbage. You then put it all in a hot pan, wait for the first side to be done, then get a plate, turn the pan over onto the plate, and put the not-done side down on the pan. When it's done, you eat it with Mayonaise, Tonkatsu sauce, and wasabi. It's delicious, it's cheap, and it makes enough food for quite a few people/meals. Raspberry-Balsamic Chicken is really really good. First, you make the sauce. You get 1/3 cup of Raspberry preserves, 2 T of Balsamic Vinegar, and some salt and pepper, and you mix it in a hot pan till all of the Raspberry Preserve is melted. Then you pour it into a bowl and cook your chicken. You take 1/2 an onion, cook them in a pan with some olive oil, get 1/2 a teaspoon of both Thyme and Salt, sprinkle it on the 4 pieces of Chicken, stick the chicken onto the pan, cooking each side for 6 minutes. When you finish the first side, flip it, then pour the Raspberry Sauce all over the chicken. When the second side is done, eat immediately. It is heavenly.

But then again, you're asking a die-hard fan site. If you ask most people, lots of them would probably say soft-cover. Although, you know what? It depends how "into" Brandon you are. If you think he's going places, and you really like his work, go for the Hardcover. If, on the other hand, you think he's an okay author, and you'll want to buy his books, but odds are low for you knowing the release date for his next book or rerererererereading his books, a softcover may suit you just fine.
