Hello Holly! I hope you enjoy writing/drawing/reading/theorizing here! I look forward to seeing you around! And beware of the Admins. They like to spike people.

GAH! That question! That's exactly what we've been wondering. Although, thinking about it, that is a good question. We know that he killed Aona and Skai, but besides that, we don't really know. Has he been evaluating Shard sizes? Seeing who he can challenge? We'll see.... Yeah, I got the quote. Although we should have a list somewhere that has one question information like this. Hmmm....

All I know about Resurrection is that Endowment does it fairly often. It's probably easier for him/her, but I bet what one shard can do, any can do with enough time and energy.

I just want to say that this is fantastic. I love it. Plus Desaturation? That's totally Nightblood! And Summon a Lamp Once? We sort of see that in Way of Kings. But I still love how many of these could be done with Brandon's magic systems.

I'd like some feedback to help flesh out an idea I have.
Zas678 replied to Nesh's topic in Creator's Corner
I think that this sounds like an awesome idea. First off, I think that the populace's favorite people are always from the Original Trilogy. And that could have some nice perspective- saying "Look- this is what you have to look forward to if you win! Yaaaaay." Plus there's the whole "Kelsier had to sacrifice himself to defeat the Dark Lord" They may not be too happy about that. And Leia might be like "Wait, we were supposed to start a religion? Darn it! All those lessons about how to turn your hair into cinnamon buns down the drain!" Plus the fact that R2 & C3PO would freak people out. Unless they went to the Homeland. They could chill there without too much worry. As for sending someone into the other universe? I'd really like to see what Kelsier could do in 5 years time in the Star Wars Universe. Especially considering that The Emperor isn't nearly as overpowered as TLR is. (I bet that Kelsier would rather face a Death Star than Compounding any day of the week). So yeah! That's my two cents. I'm excited. -
Perfect, First Mate Ironeyes! Wait for my command and ready the poisoned bananas!

I would like to announce that Santorum has dropped out of the race, leaving Romney as the almost-certain Republican nominee for the 2012 election.

Congratulations to Writing Excuses for being nominated for Best Related Work category for the second year in a row. If you want to watch the announcements, you can do so here, and if you want to see the other contestants, look here. If you want to vote on the Hugos, buy at least a supporting membership to Worldcon here. But what this post is about is progress on the Mistborn Movie front! Since Brandon announced the movie deal a number of years ago, there has been very little mention of this, or of the studio, Paloppa Pictures. Brandon said today that they have been sending him drafts of the screenplay as it comes along. The most recent draft has Brandon "extremely excited." He says that it has a nice balance of staying true to the spirit of the book, while being able to be made into a movie. Now that they're more or less satisfied with the screenplay, they are now working on finding a studio that would like to produce it. So if you know someone in the business, go ahead and give Brandon an email. But something that has me way excited is the trailor that they released for the movie. It's not a "trailer" trailer, it's just a clip of a bunch of different movies that helps capture the spirit of the film. But man, it's awesome. In other news, Peter has given a recent update on Big Books (as in not YA or novellas): "Next book should come out October/November 2013. Then probably another one a year later. Then in 2015, an Elantris sequel. Then two more Stormlight Archive books. Then the second Mistborn trilogy. Then five more Stormlight Archive books. Assuming Brandon doesn't change his mind. " Brandon is also having a Q&A of sorts on Google+. Submit a question, and upvote ones that you want asked here. It'll be on Hangout at about 11:00 EST on April 17th.

The 'Power' Of Intent (Slight Cosmere spoilers)
Zas678 replied to Odium's_Shard's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I was going to respond to this, why I believe that this idea isn't correct, (and why I don't think Brandon wrote it in) but I feel like that would be counterproductive, and I don't think I can type what I mean. Instead, I will just say four things. 1. General Theories isn't really the place for this discussion, so I'm moving it to the General Discussion with a Spoiler tag. You seem to be wanting to discuss more about Noetic Science and it's connection to Brandon's works than looking for things in Brandon's books. 2. I'm not sure we should be talking about this on this forum- we've generally had very little religion and politics on this site, and I would classify this under "religion", in the same way I classify atheists as a "religion". I'll leave this decision to some of the other Admins. 3. Brandon has said before that when he writes, he just writes. He doesn't really like pushing a theme, or working in symbolism or political statements into his books. Afterword, he'll look at what he's done and see "Hey, that's similar to this thing in my background- that must be why I wrote it that way." 4. I personally believe that Noetic Science runs fairly contrary to much of LDS* doctrine. There are some things in there that I believe could be pieces of truth (think of Sazed's religions), but I think that Noetic Science takes it too far. Here's links to what Brandon has said about religion. Goodreads Warbreaker Q&A Alloy of Law Reddit Q&A *LDS- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, often called "Mormons" for our belief in the Book of Mormon. -
Oh trust me, there's tons of random Brandon facts out there. Like these ones: How many books did Brandon write before Elantris was sold? How many Brandon Sanderson books had Harriet read before deciding "He's the one"? Then there's tons of little details/tiny reveals that Brandon's made. Like this one: What's another name for Clod? (in Warbreaker) What does the x in Aon Mea represent? Where does the notion of a "safehand" come from? What book is the Shattered Plains originally from? That's off the top of my head. I bet I could pick up a lot more if I did a little research.

The Soothing problem can also be solved. You can get mental Fortitude (the spike TenSoon has), and that makes you more resistant to soothing-mind-control. It's why TenSoon was able to pull out his spike when he had four spikes- because his mental Fortitude spikes gave him enough resistance.

Brandon just announced that he is doing a Q&A (of sorts) online. Here are the details: I'll be hanging out on Google+ from the Google offices in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday, April 18th at 1:00 p.m. Australian EST. (In US Eastern Time, that's 11:00 p.m. on April 17th, and 9:00 pm MST.) If you would like to join the Hangout, post a question in the comments of this post and let me know what you'd like to hear about in the Hangout. The best questions win a place in the Hangout, with preference going to my Australian readers. Don’t worry if you miss out—this will be a Hangout on Air, which means you can tune in to watch the discussion. Make sure you’ve added me to a circle, and then watch your stream starting just before 1:00 p.m. on April 18th for details. So post a question! Or upvote someone you know! Here's the link. EDIT- clarified a detail

I'd go for 1. Here's a tidbit from an old Q&A It could be that the Alerter only looks for things that have a significant enough presence on the Cognitive Realm, and it doesn't look at things that was close to it when it was set up.

A problem with the OP theory- if Dalinar was worried about having a legitimate heir, who has the right hair (hehe), why isn't anyone else? And you can't really loose your memory of a person who is still alive, because it would become obvious to a lot of people, and because you would notice the gaps of memory you jave when your with that person. Which means that Dalinar's wife has to be dead, which makes it rather hard to then have a kid. And if the Nightwatcher just somehow magically creates a child, then everyone knows that it's NOT legitimate, because Dalinar's wife is dead.

There are many that believe that Nohadon, along with possibly organizing the Knight Radiants, may have set the Oaths Ideals of the Knight Radiants in place as well. But it is possible that the oaths existed before the Knight Radiants, but I don't think so. They're called the Oaths Ideals of the Knight Radiants for a reason. Another interesting thing- Do you remember the piece of stone that decides who Szeth's master is? The name of it? An Oathshard. It was actually the name of The Way of Kings, back when Way of Kings was the series name when Brandon published Hero of Ages. It's possible that his spren is contained in there, much like normal spren are caught in fabrials. Also, we don't know what happens when a Nahel Bond is broken, or what happens after a spren leaves their human. How long is the Nahel Bond in effect? Maybe Szeth had a spren, but it had to leave, because it couldn't bear to watch all that destroying and killing. EDIT- My bad, my brain died. It is Ideals, and not Orders.

Tears of Edgli aren't Endowment's Physical Aspect?
Zas678 replied to Windrunner's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes. I'm saying that metals, normal metals are the same from world to world. I'd imagine that the Flowers of Edgli could be planted from world to world without drawing away energy from Endowment. Now the pure physical aspect of a shard, such as Atium or Lerasium, doesn't have these properties. It is purely made from the useable power of the Shard, so the more Atium there is, the less power that Ruin has. What I believe is that the Tears of Edgli aren't this way. I could have one flower, or a million, and Endowment would have the same amount of power. I think the mistake you are making is confusing the pure physical power of a shard (like Atium), with the physical aspect of a magic system (like color or metal). With Allomancy, it ends up being the same thing. Atium is a metal, and so can be burned allomantically. If Endowment's pure physical power is colorful (which it probably is), awakening with it probably has some benefits that normal colors wouldn't- for example, you may need fewer breaths to awaken using Endowment's pure physical power, or maybe you can use less powerful Commands. -
We admins don't spike that often. But if you're looking for intricate details about the magic systems, you have definitely come to the right place. What sort of details and discussions are you looking for? Cool stuff that can be done with the magic systems? More mathy stuff about how it would work if it was here in real life? Deep cosmerology about Realmatic Theory? Also, there's a very important question to be asked. Have you heard of Adonalsium? If not, you should check out the Cosmere 101 thread, or the Shard article on the Coppermind. We're glad you're here! Mistborn's my favorite series too. EDIT- Never mind it seems like you already are in the thick of General Theories! Welcome again!

Definition of Hema- blood. There probably is a term in-universe for powers that come from other people, that require either stealing or giving something you have to someone else. We see this with Hemalurgy, Awakening, and possibly Dahkor (as you've said). But the term for this isn't Hemalurgy. Hemalurgy is Ruin's magic that seems to involve using spikes to steal a piece of someone else's soul and sticking it to your own. Here's how Brandon explains it:

Tears of Edgli aren't Endowment's Physical Aspect?
Zas678 replied to Windrunner's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think what this quote means is that the Tears of Edgli isn't a concentrated version of Endowment's power. It still might be the physical portion of Awakening (like metals), but it isn't Concentrated Endowment, -
I know that there was some discussion on this, based off the Ars Arcanum of the Alloy of Law, but I don't know if it had its own thread or not. But otherwise, I think that Hemalurgy used properly could be used for almost all of the magic systems. The only one I'm unsure of is Surgebinding. That seems to take a Nahel Bond with an active spren, and I don't know if that bond can be forced. Maybe that's what Voidbinding is- forcing the cognitively active spren (like Syl and the Truthspren) to bind to Voidbringers/Odium's followers, granting them evil magical powers. Which then leads to an interesting moral dilemma when Navani finds out, because she's like "Am I a Voidbringer? I've been trapping spren!" which Dalinar would negate saying "No, my sweet [Roshar vegetable]. Those spren are dumb, besides you didn't know any of them help us." Then Dalinar would try to get Kaladin to join in helping cheer her up, but Kaladin would be ticked, because he'd have Syl gone (thus how they found out how Voidbringing works), and frustrated that Navani's been doing a similar thing for years! Conflict and Worldbuilding! Ummm, back on topic.... Besides Surgebinding, I think Hemalurgy could work in a number of peculiar ways. Since ONLY Nalthians are able to give up their Breaths, I'd imagine that is something in their Spiritual DNA that could be stolen from a spike. Elantrians the same; you have to be of Aonic descendant to become Elantrian, so that is something that is in the Spiritual DNA as well that could be stolen. Same (assumably) with ClayShan and Dahkor. EDIT- I'm merging this thread into the other Hemalurgy thread that popped up because of Hoid's Timeliness rule.

The Shaod = Snapping = Giving Breath = Acting with Honor
Zas678 replied to ROSHtafARian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Droz, I agree with you completely. The spren aren't just of Honor, they are of Cultivation as well, to varying degrees. Some are more of Honor (such as Syl) while others are more of Cultivation. Fixed it for you. Brandon said that it depended on how you counted. If you counted one way there was like 30, and if you counted another, it was more like 10. Here's the quote: This quote is also where we get the (mostly) unmentioned Travel Surge. EDIT-An example of where it's more like 10 than 30 is Jasnah and Shallan. They are from different orders, so they both Soulcast a little differently. But they both end up doing the same thing- changing elements. -
And do you remember the smoke that Nightblood emits? That dark smoke that is emitted when he kills someone? Yeah, it's related to the smoke that comes out of people's eyes when they're killed by Shardblades. Nightblood is a very very interesting magical person. I believe he holds many mysteries about cognition, investiture, accessing magic, and other unknown terms.
