Chapter 4 will close on Tuesday, October 18th at 8PM EST! Chapter 5 will begin two hours later! Chapter 4: The Mad Hunt Sanis caught the ionBlade with one hand, never looking away from Lumina. Then he simply… sat, watching her, as the room murmured. Several offered their support for Lumina, but eventually every voice died away as they stared at Sanis, who still hadn’t responded. The silence stretched on. All the lancers began to shift uncomfortably in their seats. Lumina didn’t move, however. Trying to outwait me? she thought inwardly, somewhat amused. She maintained eye contact with him, prepared to wait all day if necessary. He had no other options now, and he knew just as well as she did that he’d have no chance against her in a fair fight. But he was a Gold, and Golds did not back down. Sanis stared back, imagining his hands slowly suffocating the life out of her as she could do nothing but thrash futilely, out of reach of any of her precious swords, struggles getting weaker and weaker... Finally, he smiled, conceding the point. He stood slowly, gripping the ionBlade, and bowed to the room with a flourish. “Well, then. Seems my little games have to come to an end. Pity. I would’ve liked to see Tiberius die.” Murmurs around the table. Sanis grinned. Lumina smiled, just barely. Thank you for that public admission of guilt. Would’ve been awkward if you’d turned out to be faithful. But she said nothing, simply walked to the edge of the table and hopped down, walking to the clear space beside the end of the table. Sanis wasn’t finished speaking, it seemed. “But he will die, soon enough. And let’s just say that those still faithful to him will not be looked upon with favor.” He strode into the space opposite Lumina, still confident, though he knew he was facing his death. “I’m not surprised I was caught. I wasn’t precisely subtle. My compatriots, on the other hand… Well. All the rumors you all heard about me? They were true.” He bowed to Lumina, perfectly correctly. She responded in kind, though her senses were alert for any hint of movement. Killing her while her head was down would be precisely his style. “My companions are worse.” Sanis charged wildly, waving the ionBlade with abandon. Lumina waited until the last moment, then drew the katana at her waist, blocking each wild strike efficiently and precisely. He faltered for a moment, having expected her to draw her razor. That had been the idea. She kept blocking for a moment. He was nowhere near as skilled a swordsman, yes, but even beginners could have a lucky stroke, and Lumina wasn’t particularly interested in being hit by an ionBlade. So she defended. It took Sanis a while to get fatigued. He was a Gold, and a relatively fit one. But he certainly wasn’t used to holding a heavy object above his waist for extended periods of time, and Lumina was. When she judged him tired enough, she attacked back, knocking his sword out of the way again and again, landing touches on his shoulders, hands, two parallel slashes on his cheeks. With a twist, she knocked his blade completely out of his grip and put the katana at his throat. Sanis’ hand twitched. He had a knife in the back of his shirt, as always. If he could just reach it… “And they say I’m Tiberius’ assassin,” he said scornfully. “You’re worse, Lumina. You’re his executioner. How does that make you any better than me?” That her way, the other party had a chance, she thought. But she didn’t speak. Duels were not places for words, and she had a reputation to keep up, after all. Besides, there was no need. Sanis reached for his dagger, but he wasn’t quick enough. All it would take was for Lumina to twitch her fingers, and Sanis’ throat would gape open. But when she did, she saw no blood, only felt... resistance. What? His hand was getting closer to the small of his back. Surprised, she swiftly brought the flat of the blade to her shoulder and swung it at his neck, desperate to finish him before... Too late. At once, Lumina's katana struck Sanis in the neck and broke, the fragmented blade landing on Nyanah's lap nearby. At once, Sanis' own knife flew at her and burrowed into her own throat, sinister delight pulling at the corners of his lips. She could tell that the knife just barely missed her artery, but still, that did not stop the darkness from overwhelming her. The last thing she heard before her consciousness faded was Spartacus yelling "Someone wake the Yellows!" as he slipped his arms underneath her and ran for the med bay. Sanis relished in the chaos. While a few of his fellow lancers sprint ahead of Spartacus to wake the Yellows, most of them just sat still and watched him, the War Room a mixed bag of emotions. Some stared at him with awe, others with interest, a few with plain indifference, but most of them with anger. In the end, Sanis decided he was not ready to die, and so he burst from the table and through the door closest to him, making sure to run the opposite direction of the med bay. Would anyone try to follow him? Surely. But despite already being wounded, he would escape. He had to. If he could just get outside the Aerie, Nero's men could grab him and bring him to safety until he was ready to fight again. Next time, he would win. As soon as Sanis leapt for the door, a flurry of motion erupted around Nyanah, though she hardly paid it any mind, for she was too busy staring at the blade sitting in her lap, or rather, lodged into her abdomen, to care much about anything other than her own mortality. Blood seeping through her clothes, the Bondsmith held her breath, refusing to draw any Stormlight in until there was no one left to watch her. Between her tightening lungs and the shredded nerves, she could feel unconsciousness creeping towards her, but then the last lancer was outside of the room and she ripped the blade from her gut, gasping for air, the last of her stormlight reserves flooding into her to mend the wound. Like Sanis, she would live to see another day, though this time, she reflected, I'll have to be a bit more careful if I want to get home. Hours later, when Lumina had finally awoke, she found herself fully healed, albeit a tad bit exhausted. Gently, she probed at the soft, pink resFlesh that made her neck whole again. Despite herself, despite the pain, the woman smiled, content that she survived Sanis' blade just as he had survived her own. Sadly she would not survive the assassin when they found her napping a few minutes later. Lumina didn't even murmur as the blood bubbled from her reopened throat, though her eyes did flick open to take in the face of her killer. And thus Lumina the Quiet would speak no more. Sanis was defeated in a dual, but survived! He was challenged by Lumina, who was cheered on by Spartacus, Magestar, Danii, Stick, Jefry, Nirgal, Priam, Khazad, Tia, Gregor, Nyanah and Sanis. Elbereth was Lumina au Julii, a Faithful lancer in the ArchGovernor's Employ. She was slain by an unknown assassin. Lumina's whisperGem contained the following message. Nyanah was attacked, but survived! Quicksilver's Coffers (2) holoCam(s) / holoBox(es), 10 Merit: Give your holoBox to another lancer and every action that you make or that is physically made against you will be recorded and relayed to them. (2) jamField(s), 15 Merit: Any device that is used within close proximity of you and another lancer you target is disabled (not destroyed). This can interfere with a Lunes research, but no other House ability. (2) stunFist(s), 20 Merit: Stun another lancer, preventing them from taking any further actions this Chapter. If your target is protected by a pulseShield they will not be stunned, although their pulseShield will be destroyed. Amanuensis replied to Amanuensis's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Although I hate setting a precedence of amending rules in the middle of a game, I feel that making this change is worth it, both in regards to balance and fun. There's a particular reason why I did not include an alignment-scanner role, and as it stands, the current OoA not only makes the Julii one, but an exceptionally efficient one (unless the eliminators stop posting / start reducing their posts, which I believe should never be encouraged or forced by the mechanics of a game). Additionally, having Julii as early in the OoA as I did effectively made them an Item block, which significantly lessens the purpose of jamFields and stunFists. Therefore Julii will now be going after all kills and before Purchases. New Flow holoCam → Accusation → Fabii → Cheer → Duel → jamField → ghostCloak → fleshMask → stunFist → Telemanus → ionBlade → Lune → Julii → holoBox → Purchases- 589 replies

Chapter 3 will close on Sunday, October 16th at 8PM EST! Chapter 4 will begin two hours later! Chapter 3: An Heir Abandoned Rather than sleep or lay with his wife, Tiberius spent the night carving a redwood coffin for his favored bird, Mickey. By the time news of Kavax's death reached his chamber, it was little more than a bowl with a lid, though that would do for now. Allowing his last tear to fall off the precipice of his chin, he clenched the bowl, lid, and a pair of nails in his mighty hands, and sealed it shut. Sullen, he laid the crude coffin at the bottom of Mickey's cage, then exited his chamber. Pliny waited in the hall, a nervous look on his face. The two Golds did not talk as they descended towards the med bay, Tiberius lost in thought, Pliny too wary to say a word. Kavax's death was a message, of that much the ArchGovernor was certain, and it told him that not even the head of House Telemanus, the family sworn to protect his own since... well, forever... was not outside Nero au Augustus' power to destroy. If he had a weaker spine, he might have shivered, though this news only strengthen his resolve. His only regret was that his last interaction with his stalwart friend was him having to make an example of him. No one disrespected the ArchGovernor. Not even his closest allies. It was an important point to make, but still one he wished he could change, looking back. That was, at least, until he saw a large gathering of lancers outside the medbay, some looking in at the corpse sprawled inside, others gossiping among themselves, seemingly unaware of the tragedy that had just transpired. So, they'll run when a girl screams, but not when their master, their ruler, calls for them? the ArchGovernor thought, fists tightening, golden eyes brimming with rage. One by one he looked upon their faces and, yes, even Gregor and Morsde were there... though Rylos was still nowhere to be seen. Could he be...? No, he couldn't be. Could he? Before he could consider it any further, Spartacus noticed his arrival and began to charge at him, shouting Tiberius' name as if he were a Telemanus plunging into battle. Tiberius didn't even bother trying to dodge, dip, dive, duck or dodge. He knew his friends strength better than anyone else - the small Gold had a medical condition that weakened his bones and was much to proud to be Carved stronger - and knew the result would be punishment enough. On impact, Spartacus' hand shattered, the sheer resistance of force shoving his white knuckles out into the open through skin as soft as a Pink's. Luckily for him, he wouldn't have to go far for a Yellow to treat it. Rather than answer him, Tiberius stared coldly into the man's eyes, knowing how uncomfortable the silence would make him, make everyone, as they watched the scene unfold. And then another peculiarly small Gold who's name he could not recall despite the sensation of familiarity that washed his mind when he glanced at her face stepped up, as if to intervene. A faint glow from his periphery drew his gaze to his feet... some kind of new tech developed by the Greens? he thought... and then Pliny was suddenly at his side, urging him to return to his chamber in case Kavax's killer was nearby. Nodding, Tiberius waited for the glow to disappear, and then walked off, leaving his tiny Chief Politico with the two equally tiny Golds. Suspicion glinted in his eyes as he surveyed the crowd of lancers, though his words revealed little else but anger. "It's getting late, and the ArchGovernor expects you all in his War Room bright and early. If a single one of you does not show, there will be dire consequences this time. Is that clear?!" he yells, though no one answers. He looks at the wall where that stocky menace Sevro leans and shouts once more, "Is it!?" "Registers," Sevro spits, indignation plain on his ugly, scarred face. Breathing deeply, Pliny takes one last look at the crowd. "Bring Tiberius the head of whoever murdered the Friendly Giant, and I'll see to it that you're handsomely rewarded." With that, the fragile Gold departed at a hasty pace, presumably to catch up with his master. As soon as he was gone, Nyanah, the woman standing beside Spartacus, spun towards Sevro with a pointed finger and an accusatory glance. "Where were you today?" she asks, golden eyes seeming to glow with fury. "Slag off," Sevro returned, spiteful. "That's no ones business but my own." "Oh? Not even the ArchGovernor's business? How is that anything but suspicious?" Sevro just shrugged, then feeling an itch, rudely scratched at his crotch. Horrified by the act, Nyanah reached into her cloak and pretended to draw a sword. Stormlight leaked from a sphere into her hand, coalescing into a sword of Bonded Investiture. Not quite as powerful as a Shardblade, but enough for what she needed to do. "On my honor and the honor of House Bellona, I challenge you, my good man, to a duel." Laughing as if the woman had told the funniest joke in the world, Sevro clutched his gut as he tried to walk away. Before he could get far, five lancers stepped around him and formed a wall. "You people serious? I'm not going to duel this gorydamn Pixie." "Have you no honor, Sevro?" Lumina asked, sad that she had to take a stand against her old friend, ArchPrimus of her year, and the Gold who led her to victory in the Institute, which now felt like a lifetime ago. "Golds never walk away from a fight." "Well you know what, Lumina? This one's about to. I'm not going to answer to a crime I had nothing to do with." Sanis' urging was less gentle. With a swift kick to the groin, followed by another to his chest, Sevro found himself on his back, surrounded by a ring of Golds. Desperate, he searched for an ally, but each of them looked at him with either blood thirst or indifference. Fine, if they want a gorydamn duel, then I'll give them a gorydamn duel. It's not like there's anyway I could lose to this weak Pixie, anyway. Rising to his feet, Sevro gripped the hilt of his razor and flicked his wrist. Like a snake, his razor uncoiled from his forearm, then straightened into a thin blade. Like a wolf, he pounced on the girl, swiping his arm at her exposed throat. Like a fool, he stumbled to the side, one foot bound to the floor by light. "I'm sorry," Nyanah whispered as she stepped behind him and then, with one stroke, cut off Sevro's head. "I'm so sorry," she mumbled as she watched the blood pool at her feet, refusing to look at his head as it rolled next to Lumina. "I'm so, so, so sorry. But I really, really, need to go home." The next morning, not a single one of Tiberius' lancers were late to the meeting in the War Room. It was a large, domed chamber, the walls and ceiling displaying a digital map of the Solar System. At its very center, a long table with twenty-one seats, ten on each side and a throne at one end, was laid with intel about the Sons of Ares and Imperator Augustus, each seat filled save for the ArchGovernor's himself, though in Sevro's there only sat a severed head. Tiberius never showed. Bugsy6912 was Sevro au Bellona, a Forsworn lancer secretly working for Nero au Augustus. He was slain by Nyanah, who was cheered on by Lumina, Nirgal, Spartacus, Stick and Sanis. Sevro's whisperGem contained the following message: This is a warning that I will only count cheers in the designated color, Teal, from now on. Tiberius didn't kill Kavax. He just punched him. Why would Tiberius send someone to kill one of his most loyal protectors while he was unconscious in a med bay, especially when he's busy grieving over the death of his favorite parrot? It should be pretty obvious he was executed by either a loyal fanatic or a forsworn lancer attempting to generate chaos but I'll roleplay this later tonight when I'm at work, I'm about to go to sleep.- 589 replies

Chapter 2 will close on Friday, October 14th at 8PM EST! Chapter 3 will begin two hours later! Chapter 2: Out with the Old From the break of dawn to the cusp of dusk, Tiberius waited, and waited, and waited. Of all his lancers, three had failed to heed his call; to renew their vows. Gregor. Rylos. Morsde. Just thinking about their names made Tiberius tremble with fury. Knuckles white and jugular throbbing, the ArchGovernor of Mars burst from his High Chair and began descending towards the gardens, each step heavy and slow, resounding like the rhythm of a bass drum so loud that every man, woman and child stopped what they were doing to watch him finally join them, all except for one Gold who's own titanic voice drowned out any sound that wasn't his own. "KAVAX AU TELEMANUS!!!" the Gold shouted before becoming overwhelmed by a fit of laughter. The grizzled old war veteran had been telling a riveting war story from the Moon Lord Rebellion, in which Tiberius, Spartacus, Kavax, Lorn and even Nero had fought together to reclaim Ganymede. It truly was a fascinating tale of outrageous heroics, though his audience did not seem very entertained; not with the ArchGovernor looming behind the old man now, jaw clenched tight with rage. Though he was a head shorter than Kavax, Tiberius seemed to tower over him in that very moment, causing Spartacus to step back plaintively and begin to desperately motion for his new-old-friend to turn around. It took a good minute for Kavax to realize he was the only one laughing, but when he did cease and notice the silence, he did not hesitate to turn. "Oh, well hello there TIberius. I was just tellin' these youngins' about the good old days whe-" Tiberius decked Kavax au Telemanus so hard that not even his fortified skull could protect him from instant unconsciousness. Quiet. Not even Tiberius' cherished birds dared to sing, now. To all present, it was as if a picture was taken and they were now living in that photograph, bodies frozen in time by fear. Kavax was one of the most powerful Golds ever to be bred and here he was, sprawled out on the floor with a head cracked open by a single punch, ground drinking the blood leaking from an impossibly large gash behind his left ear. Somewhere nearby a Forsworn sweat, thinking to himself "This is the god we are expected to topple?" A gasp from across the garden caught Tiberius' attention as Sophocles, Kavax's pet fox, leaped from the arms of his youngest son, Pax. Just before landing, the devilish creature knocked into a Brown carrying a tray of alcoholic beverages, causing him to stumble and drop a few of the glasses on the ground. While most people watched the glass shatter, Tiberius' eyes lingered a few meters elsewhere, where has youngest daughter, Tarna, and her new best friend, "Tia" were talking with lancer Lumina, who had the most peculiar mass of colors taped to her back. It was a familiar pattern to Tiberius, though it seemed distorted, somehow, and just a bit too dirty... "MICKEY?!" the ArchGovernor shouted as he charged towards the three young ladies like a rhinoceros in heat. All three of the girls flinched as he approached. Eac expected the man to make an example out of them just like he did Kavax, but instead the they were surprised to find him his knees, gently tugging at the tape that held his favorite bird to the stoic lancer's back. "Tarna..." he said, voice shaking with grief. "How... how could you... Mickey, no..." In an instant, Pliny was at the ArchGovernor's side, desperately trying to convince the man to hand over the bird's corpse. Instead Tiberius just hugged Mickey into the crook of his neck, sobs racking his chest as a torrent of tears streamed from his eyes. Glancing at "Tia" sternly, Pliny commanded she "bring Tarna to her room immediately" and "wait there until Tiberius is ready to talk with them both." For Lumina, he only asked for her to help him get Tiberius to his own sleeping quarters. "And someone get Kavax to a Yellow!" Pliny shouted for the first time in his life, voice cracking from the pressure. When no one moved, he yelled an even louder "Now!" then finished with "And spread the news! This party is over! Tiberius expects every. Single. One of you in his war room at zero-six-hundred on the dot. Understand!?" Whether stricken by fear, or awe, or perhaps even pity for their ArchGovernor, each lancer nodded their heads in agreement. Later that night, Kavax awakened with a moan, a sharp pain throbbing from a bright pink lump on the side of his face. "What.. what happened?" he asked out loud, despite him seeing no one in that dimly lit room along with him. And yet... "You made a grave mistake this evening, insulting our beloved ArchGovernor," a young Gold said as he stepped out from behind a curtain hanging across the room, head tilted just right so that his face was obscured by shadows. "Eh? Who are you now? Where are my sons, Daxo and Pax? Step into the light, boy, so I can see your face." "Light? What light?" the young Gold said with a smile, and suddenly there was only darkness. Darkness, except for the distinct glow of the ionBlade in his hands. Before Kavax could leap from his bed, the young Gold was suddenly on top of him, jabbing it once, then twice, then a third time into his torso, the first in his gut, the second between his ribs, and the third in the center of his chest. "Why?" Kavax asked with his dying breath. The young gold answered with a shrug before the old giant's body finally went limp. "Haven't you heard? It's out with the old, in with the new." The shops are now open, and dueling may now commence! Feel free to send PMs again. You will be receiving updates on your Merit and Items shortly. (3) holoCam(s) / holoBox(es), 10 Merit: Give your holoBox to another lancer and every action that you make or that is physically made against you will be recorded and relayed to them. (2) fleshMask(s), 25 Merit: Disguise yourself as another lancer, preventing any action that would be used against you at the cost of potentially becoming the target of an action that would target the lancer you disguise yourself as. Likewise, any further action you take will be observed as being executed by the lancer you impersonate. (2) ghostCloak(s), 25 Merit: Stealth yourself, causing any action that targets you to fail. In addition, you can stalk another lancer to discover the targets and actions they make, but you yourself are unable to take any more actions. (1) pulseShield(s), 30 Merit: Passively protects you from a single death (includes duels). (1) ionBlade(s): 40 Merit: A generic, energy-based weapon that's perfect for assassinations.
