That... I don't even know. I think I like it, its simple it works, its at least vaguely plausible and is comes out of the blue like no other theory I've seen on this forum. Well played Good Sir.

So my theory is basically that the Shards were gifts to the Radiants in order to defend the world from the Desolations, and as long as they were used for that, they were cool. I'm proposing that the reason Syl now hates them is that after the Radiants abandoned them they were used to kill people and being used for the exact opposite of their purpose has effected them, their spiritual connection to their bearers has allowed the negative emotions their wielders experienced towards other men to flow into them, and that is the thrill, the built up hatred of 'the enemy' (whoever that may be) from all the people who have used the blades against people flowing back through that connection. The reason the Shardplate hasn't been similarly effected is because they don't know how to set up that spiritual connection with it. This is based on the idea that magic on Roshar has a spiritual focus, and as such the connection between bearer and blade is also spiritual.

We have no evidence that they ever didnt need gems, thats a theory, that Im not sure I agree with, also the shard blades still don't need gems, just the plate. The rest of it sort of fits I suppose although whats your explanation for Syl not hating Plate?

Theory: Shardplate Account Settings (spoilers)

Then why the emphasis on right? That makes it siginificant, from this viewpoint inside Dalinars head something worth noticing has happened that he hasnt bothered with because he was busy doing the impossible. All your examples show people doing things that arent remarkable to them, the emphasis on right, the amazement of everyone watching implies that something special is happening. -
Well it would, they are both signs of a lack of focus or concentration. Unless you aren't physically capable of speaking clearly when you arent you're rarely focused on what you're saying.
-
Is this the quote you mean: So that is clearly referring to windrunning and doesnt necessarily say anything about the rest of the magic system, I see no problem with regrowth being a surge.
-
My idea doesnt make a difference for other worlds, but on Roshar, Brandon has also said that depending on how you count it there can also be 10, I reckon there are the 10 different surges and different ways of manipulating them through the 3 different shards.

I think its more than that, he comments that it 'seemed to right' it was worth commenting on, it was abnormal. Also having some experience at throwing myself up from the ground, you know if you've gotten right, it sounds to me like he got it a little wrong and his armour corrected it, which is the same set of assumptions I think everyone else has made. -
But, is that people in universe being wrong, or are they actually different? Shallan is talking about ancient history, how much do we know about our own ancient history, how much do we think we know thats actually wrong... they have all those problems too, we've seen one set of artifacts in their history, that are associated with the heralds, the dawnshards, and we've seen one modern term of unknown origin with a name that sounds like it would be associated with the heralds, the honourblades, we also have a quote that suggests that modern scholars have forgotten about the dawnshards, that suggests to me that they forgot what the dawnshards were and needed a name for the heralds weapons and named them, the honorblades.

Im fairly sure the different gems are for soulcasters not soulcasting, and how was going into the alley not reckless, an attack against an unknown number of assailants of unknown skills, all it would have taken for her to lose was a single crossbow, or another 10 assailants, someone of her intelligence would know that and a careful someone would have made sure they had some kind of back up regardless of how unnecessary it would have turned out. Yes she is careful elsewhere, but everyone can be careful with their secrets, and even then she isnt that careful, she just doesnt let anyone near her soulcaster and always carries it when soulcasting, its pretty basic precautions, I would be taking more precautions than that, and I know a lot of people who are far more careful than I am.
-
Depending on how deep it is they could potentially just polish the etching out. And I'm inclined to believe that if Brandon says something is etched on, its etched on. He might say something that doesnt mean what we think it does, but it will mean what it says. Etched, means Etched.

The cookies are pretty amazing, you should make the most out of it. Welcome to the board, hope to see some interesting theories out of you soon
-
Thats not the issue, the issue is classifying someone who would do something that reckless as careful. You could I suppose classify it as giving, but her lack of skill at organic soulcasting makes that order incredibly unlikely and the problems with her powers makes order 2 unlikely, I can't think of another order that fits.

They were probably removed the same way dalinar removed the paint and other ornaments whoever gave him his plate had on it. After all everyone else uses plate with paint and ornaments, and no two people have armour the same, so it must be modifiable in some fashion.
-
lending credence to her being in order 2... which causes all sorts of problems for our understanding of how everything about surgebinding works. YAY!!
-
That is a good point, but wandering down into the city to fight an unknown number of experienced murderers with your only back up being a helpless little girl... really really not careful.
-
I would think so, but I feel it should also be said that thus far we have no evidence that the heralds can surgebind, we (or at least I) just believe that they must be able to.
-
People keep saying the glyphs but im pretty sure the glyphs are carved in, I think it says etched, in Dalinar's vision, Dalinar has the glow, the glyphs might mean something but they aren't spontaneous, they get etched in. The only real question about the connection to the armour is if Dalinar had the full glow or if he was only halfway.

just pointing out that the 'somehow remaining upright' is from the perspective of a non-shardbearer, all the shardbearers we see take a bit more grace a bit more power as normal thats all it would really take to jump from a galloping horse, he doesn't neccesarily have any more than a normal Shardbearer, Dalinar is actually qiute literally falling over when his armour pulls him upright and allows him to land balanced and on his feet when he otherwise wouldn't have. That, and the glow I think are the truly special aspects of what Dalinar is doing with his armour, the rest I would attribute to him drawing in stormlight and becoming stronger and faster due to that, etc basically being a surgebinder, on his way to becoming a radiant. -
Im with happyman here, but I think thats what reader is trying to say, if you can't awaken mentally you need to reinforce the thought process by saying the mental command aloud, and using different languages would intefere with that reinforcement, basically whats already been said, as he said.

Roshar is definitely a sphere but I dont think the high storms circle the planet completely I think the fact that they have origin suggests that they have an actual real origin that is in some way significant.

I like it, its simple and makes sense. When I've had more time to think I'll come to you with any objections that I can come up with. Before I go, I will ask, wouldnt it be simpler to assume that Dalinar took in stormlight and thats where the enhanced speed and strength came from? -
At this stage I think Jasnah 5, Shallan 6 is the most likely, even though Jasnah fits 2 better than 5 the powers she has shown don't fit with what 2 would have (no pressure or gravity, although this could be misinterpretation) and she fits order 5 better than Jasnah fits order 3 anyway.
-
I like Zas' theory a lot better, especially since Im pretty sure the amended theory of intent is word of Brandon and therefore far more accurate than the original theory.

Spren- which shard they are related to.
