They are uncomfortable with each other, but they don't exactly disappear. Elhokar's wording suggest that the shadows were permanently gone or at least had taken an extended leave. Pattern doesn't disappear just because Syl happens to be nearby and vice verca.

I think despite BS's and @Farnsworth's efforts - for some of us, the only way we'll know it was a good punch or not is by waking up 1-2 days later

See, I keep seeing parellals with Mistborn series. So, Ellend is a regular guy who is protected and then gets some powers. Elhokar is a central character, who I think will not get powers for philosophical reasons. Protecting from desolations is a target. But, who is symbolically being protected? Elhokar is that symbol in the book. Even Kal notes in WoR that Elhokar is Dalinar's Tien. No point giving Elhokar powers - because that way - who are the KR protecting? Themselves? Coz everyone of them has superpowers. I think the king has a very different role though. The champion will be nominated by someone and I think Elhokar will need to endorse it. My reason is that someone needs to be representing the human side accepting the grand bargain with Odium. So, think of a larger scale version of King's champion asking for boon of fight with another champion from WoR. That was rooted in tradition, which I think came from the champion fight for Honor v Odium. Then there is this bit from WoR If Kaladin's arrival scared the shadows away, then it doesn't sound like a KR spren like behaviour. PS only 13 uses of the word champion in WoR. Most reference the Honor champion, Adolin's championship fight, etc. Two non-specific ones were Dalinar calling Aladar to be a champion at the shattered plains and the below quote.

I definitely agree that the writing style is different A LOT for this book. The big difference that I see is that in every scene the focus shifts from person to person. So, the Kaladin chapters do that. But the Dalinar chapters are written differently - the individual "spotlight" on other characters is lighter. Particularly at the wedding. It happens so quickly! Yet the spotlight does come on when talking to the Ardent. On another note - "crystal like voice...." - does anyone else think of Wyndle's crystals when that's mentioned?
-
WoB - Dalinar does not die in OB, but it can be painful. As each book is revealed as a published work already, so that doesn't make sense. I am also wondering if shshsh... wrote it.

Err... well red wedding dresses are common on planet earth for some cultures, and white is a mourning colour for some. So, it didn't strike me as much as others

I am begining to wonder about a second radiant there in hearthstone. Maybe Lirin or Mara? A truthwatcher? Mara is now a surgeon apprentice...
-
I just found Kal non-sensical. How about a span reed to hearthstone instead of sending Kaladin? They could have told Roshone to keep the parents safe as an order. Then Kal punches Roshone for a traitor.... will go down well!

I just wanted to have this thread to recall what great scenes edgedancer had. There are a lot of moments in that novella. My favourite ones are:- + "I want control..." The emotion and the context really brings the emotion out. Particularly, if you are listening to the audiobook version. + The apple bite was quite a visual reference + Offering to eat Wyndle + The entire climax + Scene with Szeth + Pancakefulness + Nothing at all

This is great... so much discussion and its sunday here. So, back to a new chapter release soon!

Great stuff, Kudos. I read most of your post. I guess listening to audiobooks has left me devoid of the patience required. You can have as many paragraphs as you want. My main point is that once anyone's paragraph hits 10 lines in length - they should just break it up and continue on the same idea from the next paragraph. Helps make it more visually appealing to read.

Interestingly, Dalinar had called for Ialay on seeing Sadeas's body. I wonder if Ialay will ask Dalinar to set a punishment in advance or reward for the capture/killing of Sadeas's killer. So, I am guessing that's what will come out in the following chapters in the next week or two. And a request for some posters: I love your stuff and want to read all your words, but please break your text into multiple paragraphs. Once a paragraph hits 8-10 lines, it requires more concentration to read...

I am missing the dates at the start of chapters, as it was a bit confusing how many days had it been since the storm. I am not that worried though given that Brandon mentioned strong beta reader response. This is like the Return of the Jedi book version, so I am guessing it gets more action than scene descriptions, theories and character introductions.

Red herrings or not? Aladar is always kept 2 dimensional. No dedicated scenes with him after 2 books. Something brewing? Now the visions are interactive VR! What will Dalinar figure out using the other visions? 34 years ago Dalinar felt the thrill. When did this desolation start or did the last one ever finish? Shades of the final empire...

So, there is a km/mile range on squire-radiant link? Mobile tower/TV tower like? "Hello, can the radiant just stand still, while I walk towards it? It is south-east isn't it? Can he fly 200m further south please..."
-
Well, given Dalinar's vision at the end of the last book and the golden light, I wouldn't be surprised if it is the captured shadow of Gavilar.
-
Once Had Been? Not any more? I've said it is Shallan's book and she had the best scenes.
-
Why is that night so important? Was it because Gavilar's assasination was set up then? Anybody else notice that the three prologues are in reverse order? Gavilar's death Jasnah's awakening on that night Eshonai's realisation that the king had to die I am guessing the next two prologues for the SA4 and SA5 will go into what was the root cause in reverse order as well. Gavilar's assasination was what triggered off everything. But, Gavilar was already having visions... so there must be something that would be a precursor leading to Eshonai's meeting with Gavilar.
-
Meridas Amaram was in the room when Eshonai entered... did anyone else notice that? And Gavilar looked looney as hell. E just needed to start cackling to complete the cliche.

Yeah. Totally agree the chapter thing won't work with the full book. In any case, when the full book comes out, I'll see if I can set up a thread post book 1, book 2, and so on (ie 4 threads as the full book reactions will be up pretty early by others). Obviously there'll be other threads. But that will allow a mid book discussion without spoilering.
-
I agree with @maxal 's idea for a separate thread for each chapter/part/book? infact, once the whole book comes out, we should have a separate thread for each chapter. That way, we can pause after each chapter and discuss as a progressive MO combination read-together! Do we have an index coming out? I also think we can post all post book 1/2/3/4/5 discussions separately.
-
Is it ever going to be final? I have the audio version with WoR's original ending for Szeth's duel with Kaladin. Yet, post publication, BS changed it. Who knows what can change!
-
That was the most cliche scene of the entire book. "Thy hand"...? Talk about going OTT biblical! Made me remember my wife asking for a hand in changing the kids' nappies. I think Shallan had the best scenes - stick, final encounter with Tyn, Vatha, Boots, Chasm chat with Kaladin, final scene with her father, final scene with her mother. Truly was her book.
