  1. What do you get when you multiply six by eight? All of your beverages now taste almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea. I wish to share a beautiful moment with a small bird in front of a stadium filled with enraptured onlookers.
  2. Done. I'll PM you. Also, In The Art of the Deal, Captain Picard joins up with the Star Trek Corps of Engineers and the crew of the USS da Vinci to confront a group of saboteurs on a rapidly-industrializing agricultural planet! What do you mean, that's the wrong Art of the Deal? For your bane, you now have tiny hands. Morel season is almost here in my neck of the woods! I wish that over the next few weeks, I'll be able to bring home baskets and baskets filled with delicious morels.
  3. At some point, his predictions should be realized. An actual, living woman should say to him: "Lopen, I know that you're a Herdazian who has lost limbs in the past, but I see that you can glow. You should kiss me now." Beyond that, I see him drifting a bit out of Kaladin's orbit as he shepherds his family and cousins safely through the Desolation. The Herdazian Cousins becomes an auxilliary group providing aid and shelter to Kaladin's other squires at times of need. At some point, Kaladin does something that endangers Lopen's family, a rift forms between them, and Lopen loses his squire powers. At the last minute, Kaladin's in danger, Lopen reconciles, and a herd of Herdazians comes riding to the rescue.
  4. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=1069#9 QuestionCan you write an unknown ideal [in my book]? Brandon SandersonThey are still rough so this might not be the exact wording but: "I will stand when others fall."
  5. Philosophically, both proceed from the human desire to resolve incongruities. Comedically, both are what you're doin' while I'm showin' yo momma a good time! Strange fossils with toothed probosci are like blueberry cobbler on the first day of fall.
  6. Ulster liberals titillate regal octogenarian nanas (what, you didn't know the Queen has a thing for Irish separatists?) My favorite palindromes: Satan, oscillate my metallic sonatas Go hang a salami, I'm a lasagna hog And y'all probably already know the Sator Square, which comes out the same right-to-left, left-to-right, top-to-bottom, and bottom-to-top: SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS For the challenge, let's go with ROTATOR
  7. Since Sanderson spent a long time in Korea, I assumed it had to do with Buddha's teaching on reincarnation. When Vacchagotta asked Buddha about how the soul travels from one body to another, Buddha answered "Which way does the fire go when it goes out? Does it go north, south, east, or west?" When fire goes out, it doesn't go anywhere. But when you start a new flame, exactly the same thing (fire) appears once again. When you combine this with the "words on a page" bit, I'm assuming that Hoid is his own lightweaving. He survived the Shattering of Adonalsium by creating a weaving that perfectly cloned himself, and reincarnated himself into the new cosmere. Since Yolish lightweaving uses dust, Runyan's quote works with this interpretation as well.
  8. Huh. So, like transubstantiation. Communion wafers act like bread physically, but spiritually they act as the body of christ. Wasn't atium even referred to as the "body" of Ruin somewhere in HOA? Instead of a supercollider, I'd have to use a priest...
  9. Since Era 2 Scadrial has electricity, we know that electrons are a thing in the Cosmere. Therefore, we can probably assume that normal matter in the cosmere is made up of atoms, and the atoms are made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons. What about god metals? Are they also made up of electrons, neutrons, and protons? If they aren't, then why do they act like normal matter when they aren't being burnt? If they are made up of electrons, neutrons, and protons, then you should be able to take some normal matter, stick it in a supercollider, and make new atoms of the godmetal (for instance, we can manufacture ununoctium by colliding californium and calcium). Could you strengthen a Shard with this method? Ruin was looking for the Atium cache to strengthen himself. What if TLR had built a supercollider, manufactured a large supply of Lerasium, and offered it to Preservation? This raises all sorts of questions. Is Investiture conserved? If you manufactured a godmetal, and thereby strengthened a given shard, would their increased strength come by weakening the other shards? Or would you be increasing the total amount of Investiture in the Cosmere?
  10. Irishmen would rather drin wine than either of them ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/03/17/irish_turn_to_wine/). The snakes of Ireland are like my hopes and dreams...
  11. Scribbled sketches of those two things fill the pages of thousands of rat-gnawed notebooks crammed in my attic. The only other things in those notebooks are detailed sketches of YOUR left elbow, and the repeated inscription "I gAzE tHrouGh thEir BoNes!" Fat puppies dozing in the shade are like squirrels chittering in morning dew.
  12. Attractive to invertebrates (santhids and psyllid flies, respectively). Strangely enough, when I first introduced grated carrots into this thread, I was grating them...for a soup. I like to lightly sautee the finely-grated carrot mush--it seems to bring out the sweetness. Then I add broth, garlic, carraway, and dairy, and have myself a nice cream of carrot soup. Listening to Guatemalan gospel music is like removing perfectly good carrot fiber from your soup...
  13. Done, akasketch. I agree with Khyrindor: Shallan's activities seem to access the spiritual aspect via the cognitive aspect. As I understand it, Shallan somehow percieves what a person wants to be, or what they percieve themselves as in moments of pride. She then makes a sketch that emphasizes the aspects of that idealized self that she herself wants to accentuate in the person. She shows the sketch to the person, the person percieves what they could be, and are nudged on the path to becoming that. Malatium's forkpoint is a decision made in the past, and the image it shows is a different possible present. Shallan's forkpoint is a decision made in the present, and the image it shows is a different possible future. There wouldn't be perfect correspondence between the two. However, malatium could definitely give Shallan useful information.
  14. Best treated caustically (green olives are cured in lye). Reading ancient texts is like grating carrots.
  15. Whispering horses are truly horrifying. Ashen venal equines invoke demons, ominously neighing evil. ITISALIE
  16. Brussels sprouts. cantaloupe. Foraged foods: black trumpets, mulberries, smilax sprigs, poke sallet. I lived in Xi'an China for a year almost a decade ago, and I still dream of the street food there. There was an incredible tofu porridge in gravy, and danbing eggy flatbreads, nd big fat biangbiang noodles in broth. The things they could do with an eggplant! I made some baozi stuffed steamed buns about a week ago, and they sparked so many memories that I ate three days' woth in one sitting.
  17. Probably the most useful phrase I've ever learned: 出门如见大宾--Go out the door as if greeting magnificent guest. -- Kongzi
  18. A voidbringer is a parshendi plus a spren, with the spren contributing more to the voidbringer's nature than the parshendi does. If a dawnsinger is an aimian and a spren interacting in the same way, it wouldbe more correct to call them "spren" than "aimian".
  19. I doubt that industrial-scale TP production is a thing anywhere except maybe W&W-era Scadrial. I've always assumed that the safehand taboo hints that Roshar uses the Indian left-hand-and-water method. http://www.roadjunky.com/1585/the-left-hand-toilet-technique-and-spitting-world-hygiene/ In Shinovar, of course, they would have enough fowl handy to follow Rabelais' advice and use the neck of a goose. http://knowledgenuts.com/2014/08/11/why-you-should-wipe-yourself-with-a-gooses-neck/ if things start sticking together, you're in trouble. my writing is like a cob with all the corn eaten off.
  20. http://www.theoryland.com/intvsresults.php?kw=safehand nterview: Mar 4th, 2014 WoR Signing Report - Leinton (Paraphrased) Leinton Oh something I forgot to mention when I went over my Q/A session with Brandon. Someone else's question was about the safehand and Brandon gave new information on it. Brandon SandersonSo that essay he told us about? The one that defined masculine arts as being ones with two hands and feminine needing only one? That was in order to let men secure power over Shardblades.
  21. Figberts, through most of human history, hunter-gatherers and nomads had honor cultures, where the proper resonse to an affront is revenge. Cultivation of land led to more stratified and larger societies, where revenge (honor) was progressively replaced by retribution and law. From the Mesolithic until fairly recently, the world was divided between honor-cultures and cultivation-cultures.
  22. One completely off-the wall thought: Since roshar orbits a young white star, the spectrum coming from the star would be more blue than it would be in other systems. So, light coming from other stars would look "red" as compared to the light from your own star. Roshar and Threnody might be receiving the same spectrum from Taln's scar, but while Threnody would perceive it as "bright", Roshar would percieve it as "red". There are problems with this, of course, since colors on Roshar seem to match colors on earth. Plants are "green". I guess they could actually be what we'd call blue-green, and use a different type of chlorophyll than we do, but--probably a stretch. edit:yep, I was an idiot about Threnody and Sel. edit 2: and crud, it's alled the "red rip" on Scadrial, too. Forget this whole post!
  23. One theory of the Stormfather is that he is a frankenstein combo of Honor's spren and Jezerezeh's cognitive shadow. I'm not at all sure if I agree with that interpretation, but if it were the case, we'd have already seen an example of a cognitive shadow in a nahel bond.
  24. I'm pretty sure that there's a consensus that this rattle is referring to Shallan and Kaladin coming out of the chasms with the gemheart of the slain chasmfiend. edit:ninja'd
