  1. Well... I've got a crossover for my prompt for Secret Santa this year, so that one might be a little bit less... plausible. No details as of yet, because I don't want my prompter to know that I've got them, but I can say that it will be Mistborn (and... something else!) As for the length of ASMoB, I don't actually have a planned length or an ending in mind, just a string of cute scenes all back and forth. As of right now I've got... four or five scenes still in mind, though I think of more and more all the time. I'll stop when I run out of ideas perhaps, or maybe somewhere along the way I'll find a good way to wrap it up. (I didn't have an actual ending in mind when I wrote my Avengers fic and I'm actually pretty proud of that one. That fic is kind of the one that convinced me that writing by the seat of my pants is actually a pretty viable option for me. I can pull off endings without having them in mind if I'm careful!)
  2. *muffled happy sobbing* I... How... Whaaaa... That's it. I can't. I cannot even handle you guys anymore. *suddenly overwhelmed with the need to finish the 5th chapter of ASMoB*
  3. Hehehe... "A Training Session" was actually written as a gift for someone else as part of the tumblr fandom's Secret Santa gift exchange last year. So I got a prompt that asked for "something with Kaladin and Adolin" and I did my best to write them a story that they would want to read! (But my dear shipper heart couldn't help but throw in a Shallarin cameo right at the end just for fun!) I like to think that this scene might take place within the same continuity as A Strange Mix of Both, but the timelines might not actually work out, so eh, whatevs. If you guys make a fanclub thread for me I will probably cry a lot and fall on the ground out of not being able to handle that. I just... Aaaaaaah? People like my stuff that much? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh??? Do not know how to react to this! Liveblogs of my fics are basically my favorites, this is true and if you liveblog any of my writingI will love you pretty much forever. (Cosmere curses are the best, storm it!) *high pitched keening noise about my original writing* Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh I like... cannot understand that my writing would be good enough that you guys would want to meet my characters and see my stories. I'm just, this thread has taken the most wonderful turn and I hope everyone's dreams here come true and you find $20 on the ground. One one hand, I'm thinking "I've kinda shared my story around a lot" but on the other hand, it would be nice to have some people who don't ship Vanaline and Len together because the rest of my fandom is crazy and thinks those two would be a good couple. (*shudders* Vanalen shippers... Every. Single. Other. Person. Wants. Them. Together. Help.) As if I could ever compare to the perfect mastery that is David's grasp of metaphorical language. I cry every day that I will never be as good as him.
  4. I have finished IB3! I lucked out and ended up getting three weapons that were way over-leveled for Isa in my game, so she sliced through all of her opponents like they were nothing. I actually had the most trouble playing with Siris because I had to buy all of his weapons all the old fashioned way and couldn't find any good ones randomly! It certainly is a wonderful series! And so so beautiful! I know there's an expansion that came out on Halloween, but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.
  5. Don't forget about the Atium helm from the second game! Yeah, the games are absolutely brilliant, but the fact that they're only out for iOS means there's people who can't get a chance to play them because they don't have an iOS device. Which is why I made the guide, for people who still want to be able to read the novellas and experience the story.
  6. Oh but they're so good! You shouldn't let that stop you...
  7. Yeah, Marianmi, I was more responding to your assertation that Dalinar and Eshonai wouldn't need a mediator. I don't think Shen is necessarily a great choice for it though, because of the reasons you stated.
  8. I... I... I wish I could give you guys more upvotes than one at a time. (Yes, I'm rather proud of the Shardblade metaphor. I had to try a couple different drafts of that sentence to make it work just the way I wanted.) If you really want to see my fanfics, I've only got 4 fics right now, all Stormlight (which I think both of you have already read, but in case anyone else is curious): "A Training Session" "Beneath The Bells of Kharbranth" The little drabble above, which is untitled right now A Strange Mix of Both (which currently has 4 chapters but will have more eventually) If you want to see more, you should maybe follow that tumblr? Because that's where I post all my writing stuff. I tend to think that people over here don't want me bugging them with fanfics and such, so I don't post things over here. I know there's a Creator's Corner board, but do people really check it? Same for things like fanmixes or analyses. If y'all want to see more of that though, I can certainly post it over here! I mean I was wondering if I should post the Dalinar mix that I did yesterday over here, but the last two mixes I did didn't really get much response here, so I thought I shouldn't bother. Perhaps you all are growing though!
  9. Marianmi, speaking as someone who has intercultural studies as a college major, trust me, any intercultural exchange is greatly improved by the presence and "translation" of a mediator. Without one, even if both people are good people who want the best, they are going to misunderstand and misinterpret each other, because that's what happens when you speak into a culture that you don't understand. A cultural mediator can make certain that the intention of both sides is made clear to the other. So if Dalinar accidentally acts in a way that is offensive to the Parshendi, Shen can tell Eshonai, "he's human, they don't think like us and that's not what he meant by that, he was trying to convey: xxxxxxxx" Which Esh will probably think that that's a really dumb way to do things and "humans are so stupid, why would they think that's what that means" but her cultural mediator tells her otherwise so she trusts him. Or if the Parshendi way to greet a fellow warrior is really aggressive or something, Shen can tell Dalinar "no, she's not trying to attack you, this is a respectful greeting and here's how you should respond correctly." Maybe Shen's not going to be the best mediator here, but there should definitely be someone mediating if possible. Cultural misunderstandings happen even among human cultures. The cultural differences against a completely different race of people, stacked upon the prejudices of the fact that these two cultures have been at war for years, makes it nearly impossible that they would be able to speak to each other without something unintentionally going wrong.
  10. Emma posted a cool (and by cool I mean heartbreaking) theory that it's possible that Renarin already has his powers and he's hiding them throughout WoK for fear of discovery. (Spoiler cut because of length) Which... I of course fell in love with and then proceded to cry for two hours while writing a thing in some wierd present tense style because I don't know it seemed like a good idea at the time? (also spoiler cut for length)
  11. Gah, you are going to kill me with all this lovely art. I mean, I've seen most of it before, but all of it all at once? TOO MUCH GORGEOUS! (Also, your Renarin portrait may or may not be the current lock screen on my iPad...)
  12. Ooooh, Shen as a cultural mediator? YES PLEASE. That would be awesome! What a cool idea!
  13. Ah, you're right! Nice catch!
  14. Oh I have a bunch of sticky notes on my wall, all labeled "DQ2AB" aka "dumb questions to ask Brandon." Aside from Syl's safehand other gems include "Can men on Roshar do things lefthandedly, and if so, can male ardents learn to write with their left hands?" and "Does Atium still work if you can't see the shadows, such as if it were pitch black or if the Allomancer were blinded?"
  15. Ah, that's true. I'll leave that sticky note up on my wall then still. Silly Feather, wondering about the little things while y'all have your theories. I have such simple wants.
  16. I'm just going to pretend I wasn't crying all the way through that. Stormfather, this book is going to kill me. On a more lighthearted note, I think my question about Syl having a safehand covering is answered. I'm on my iPad, so I can't find my code to get into the actual page and grab the quote, but it talks about her clasping her hands together. I figure if she had a "sleeve" of some sort, Kaladin would have mentioned it there.
  17. This actually might be a good time to move this discussion over to the "Your Cosmere OTP" thread, since that one was meant to be the "shipping" discussion, and it's probably best to let this thread die for now, if that's okay.
  18. Ah, I missed the notification that this thread had updated! I just came back here to see if I could resurrect this one (so that we can move off the more... contentious thread) and saw that there were more replies! Trust me, there is now an upvote for the Shallarin shipping from me! That always gets love out of me.
  19. Tindwyl's hair color is never mentioned, as far as I know. Her hair is described as long and in a braid, and in the same sentence she is described as wearing red—if I remember correctly—and that has caused some people to associate her hair and the color red together.
  20. Okay, I was hoping this thread might die and we could all just stop talking about this, but that's apparently not the case. I created this thread so I feel somewhat responsible for its conduct and content. This will most likely be a long post. I am going to hope that maybe this can be the last post in this thread. This will probably be an uncomfortable post for some to read, but as the OP, I'm gonna buckle down and say it. @all those who don't understand why this thread's comments are under contention: DIsclaimer: I'm going to use "you" as a collective in this post; please know that I am not addressing any one person. There are quite a few people in this thread to whom this is directed and I hope that you can read this with an open mind and realize that I am attempting to be open and explain what really happened. Here's the deal. I haven't the slightest doubt that none of you meant to hurt anyone. I see your comments such as: Perhaps the reason I've waited so long to respond is because the things that you're saying sound a lot like things that I, myself, would have said even just a year ago. I'm coming to you to try to help explain what went wrong here in a way that you can understand, because I've been there, and were our places switched, this is the kind of explanation I would have wanted to receive. One of the first lessons I had to learn to understand what was wrong with the ways that I spoke was: What we intend is less important than what was understood. You did not mean for your words to be hurtful. In fact, I think that perhaps most of the people in this thread were trying very hard not to be offensive. That really is admirable and I would only hope that the members of the Cosmere fandom were not intentionally trying to hurt each other. We're a family, we're still the best fandom, and we should be able to talk about issues like this kindly. I really do believe that this is what the responders of this thread were trying to do and I applaud your intent. Unfortunately, what must be understood is that: Regardless of intent, people were hurt. Badly. It didn't come across here, because that isn't the tumblr fandom's way. They don't want to become something bad and they don't want to start flame wars. Even at a point like this, they're not going to come here and tell you what they're feeling. They talk amongst themselves about how hurt they were and then decide that they're going to try to stay away from this so that they don't get hurt again. I applaud them, really and truly, for their maturity and discretion. It takes strength to realize that you are too emotionally involved in a topic to respond constructively and to hold yourself back for the sake of the fandom. I'm not going to link to their reactions here, because they specifically made them in a way that they wouldn't be found by others. They didn't want to yell at you all and fight. Even in the midst of deep hurt, their conduct has been incredible and I am very, very proud of them. Suffice it to say, many, many members of the other fandom have—because of the views expressed in this thread—decided that 17th Shard is not a safe or welcoming place for them and their lives will be better if they never see or hear of this forum again. That leaves the diplomacy to someone like me. Someone who isn't emotionally involved. Someone who sees things from both sides of the issue. Someone with interest in seeing reconcilliation. I am the child of both worlds, the member of both fandoms. I will do my best to use my position to bring about understanding and a peaceful termination to this incident. You say that "you didn't mean to upset anyone" and that "that wasn't what you intended," but please hear me when I say that that really doesn't matter. What determines whether or not your words or views are hurtful is not whether you were trying to hurt someone, but whether or not someone was hurt by them. And they were. You all did not try to hurt anyone, but the views and opinions that you were expressing drove people to emotional excess, pain, and upset. When you have hurt someone, even unintentionally, there is one correct response: apologize, attempt to convey that the hurt was entirely unintentional, and what you can do to not hurt people in the future. Don't try to defend that "you weren't trying to be offensive." Whether or not you were trying to be, you were offensive. People were offended. That's a fact that's not disputable. The person who is offended is the one who decides what's offensive, not the one who said it, okay? What you need to do now is accept that and try to learn from it. If we continue to fight here about what is and isn't offensive, you're just going to convey to those who have been hurt that you don't care about the fact that you hurt them and you don't have any intentions to change that. At which point, those who have been hurt realize "I cannot trust this person. They are hurtful and they don't care that they're hurtful. So, I'm going to try to stay away from them because I cannot trust that they will not attack me, whether they mean to or not." I am not upset by what has happened here and I'm not mad. But I don't want it to happen again. Both of these groups are my friends and I love both sides. The fact that one side would feel so strongly about the other is painful for me to go through, and as someone who understands both of the sides, I want to be the mediator and make that everyone understands what went wrong so that we can avoid something like this in the future. If you disagree with what I'm saying here or you still don't understand what I mean, please send me a PM and I will be more than willing to try to explain further. I will not be mad at you. I am not mad at anyone here. I am not mad at anyone on tumblr. Heck, I don't really ever get mad at anyone. If you message me, I am going to try to explain with the utmost kindness and care, because I believe that disagreements are borne out of misunderstanding and that openness and kindness can go a long way to helping people understand. TL;DR: Here's what I'm going to ask. Please don't argue with this post. Like I said above, if you feel you must respond, please do so to me privately. It is the wish of those who were hurt in this that this discussion simply die and that this conversation stop. My advice to those involved here: if you must post, write a small apology, whether you understand or not, and leave it at that. Whether or not you think what you did was wrong, you can at least express that you were sorry that people were hurt by what you said. After that, let this thread die, please. I don't want to have to ask that this thread be locked and closed down, but it's a very real possibility at this point. I hope that we can all be mature enough here to stop before that becomes necessary. Thank you.
  21. That's... kind of a not very kind attitude, Gloom. I mean, we say that the purpose of the rep system is to encourage good kinds of posts and discourage bad ones, right? Therefore the posts that get lots of upvotes are the ones which are "good" and should be emulated and the ones that get downvotes are "bad" and those behaviours should be avoided. Right? I make my posts for other people. I talk about Renarin and make theories and posts in the hope that what I am writing can improve someone else's understanding or make them happy. I like when people give me upvotes because that means they thought I contributed something good or that they enjoyed. My writing made someone else happy enough that they wanted to show that to me with the feedback enough of an upvote? That's one of the best feelings I can get. So when I see other people doing the same thing: making posts that they know I will enjoy - like talking about Shallarin or affirming how awesome Renarin is - I'm gonna show them that I appreciate that by giving them an upvote, obviously. Even if they say: "I am writing this because I know Feather will like it," that is super awesome that people are trying to make things that they think I will like, and storm it, I'm gonna tell them that I love that they're doing that with an upvote. And if someone were to make a post that they thought people would like, and then it gets no upvotes, they're going to wonder what they may have done wrong and why people didn't like it. This thread, insofar as the discussion of Renarin has gone, is in my opinion a lot of people talking about a character that makes them happy and by doing that they're making other people happy, so they're given upvotes for that. Let's not be disparaging and dismissive of people being nice to each other and enjoying the forum, please? Can we assume that people are doing these things because they want to do them and that it makes them happy instead of presuming that they're doing this out of an empty, selfish greed for something as silly as rep?
  22. @Gamma Fiend: I take credit/blame for the Renarinaissance (which is a term that I just came up with and that I am sticking with from now on). See, here's the thing about Renarin: he's awesome/tragic/heartbreaking/incredible, but he isn't obvious about it. So people read WoK through once and miss his amazingness because he's not a PoV character and he stays in the background of most of the scenes that he's in. The main characters get the spotlight in a first readthrough, for obvious reasons. They're the ones you focus on. However, after a few readthroughs, you start to pick up on the background stuff. Renarin struck me in my first few readthroughs as "quiet and sweet." I didn't look much more into it. Then... I started to pay attention to him. And I just kept falling more and more in love with his character and who he was as a person. I tend to try to tell people now to watch out for Renarin when they pick up the book, because his is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it sort of characterization. When you're watching him though, there is so much that we can interpret from his character and all of it simultaneously breaks and warms my heart. The Cosmere Fandom over on tumblr kind of all just started to fall in love with him together and we all built up off each other until the whole fandom has become a huge mess of feels and protective instincts for this quiet younger Kholin brother. So, then I come back here, full to the brim with analysis and and headcanons and quotes about him, and... see that people around here haven't realized the stuff about him that I have. Of course, I am happy to share my thoughts, knowledge, and research, as seen throughout this thread. And when it's explained to people and the quotes are all compiled side-by-side, my dear sweet Renarin makes a pretty compelling case for character that we should all be appreciating. People jump on board. And I celebrate that Renarin's starting to get the attention and fans that he deserves. RE Rock: I think it's possible that Rock could see Renarin's spren. The quote says "sees a spren that nobody else does." That does not say, if you will note, "that no one else can." I think it's possible that Rock could see the spren, but he and Renarin don't ever cross paths in WoK, so there isn't an opportunity for him to see Renarin's spren.
  23. Yeah, as a female Sanderfan, including a reference in any kind of relationship proposal is very, very effective. The one and only time that I've ever actually been asked out (and unfortunately it didn't work out) was with this:
  24. @marianmi I... I... I can't... I think I just got usurped as the fandom monster. That's it. Congratulations on having the worst possible headcanon for how that scene is going to go. I just...
  25. Okay, I will officially say that I have probably lost my ability to accurately respond to this thread, because I simply can't keep up! However, "Too Many People Talking To Me About Renarin" is basically the exact opposite of a problem. So, in honor of the fact that I'm wearing a Soulcaster, and I'm much too stubborn to give up now, let's do this: In case you haven't already noticed, "excessive" is a bit of an understatement in regards to my feelings on Renarin. "Ruffled feathers." Har har. You are slightly forgiven for your earlier indescretion because of your artifabrian!Renarin headcanon (which I've been pushing for YEARS) but you are still on the major watchlist because what is all of this Kalarin doing in here all of a sudden? *squints at screen* Gloom, have you been talking to Kogi? You did manage to get an upvote from me for that. Other people having new Shallarin headcanons? YES. However, I'm gonna differ with you. I really, really want Shallan to keep her Shardblade. I could see this happening where she thows it to him in the heat of the moment (though throwing a Shardblade seems ill advised...), but I wouldn't want her to give it to him permanently. My endgame Shallarin would be Shardbearer!Shallan and artifabrian!Renarin. In fact, I want to see Shallan develop her own one-handed style of "feminine" sword fighting. After all, if "true feminine pursuits and arts were those that could be performed with one hand, while masculine arts were those performed with two hands" then couldn't a one-handed style be considred a feminine art? I mean, Shardblades are light enough that it could be possible. Also, can you imagine it? Fencing with a sweeping Shardblade style? How awesome would that be? In regards to that first comment: COULD YOU NOT? You did say that Renarin probably won't die which is probably why I haven't sent my assassins after you quite yet, but by the Survivor, what is this? Why is there Kalarin? Are you going Kalarin too? Like... the fact that Renarin might remind Kaladin of Tien is one of the very reasons that the Kalarin shippers throw around as support all the time. Whaa... are you and Gloom in this together? Did Kogi get to you both? Or is this simply a new strategy... You know that I can bring around the wrath of tumblr for any talk against Renarin, but if you two start using Kalarin against me instead...they'll probably just join you. Harmony's forearms... that's devious. And there you are completely incorrect. My spies informed me days ago about your bonded cakespren. However, I also know that you are no match for me and my bonded coffeespren. I said the First Ideal aloud when reading WoK accidentally, and a few weeks ago I even figured out the Second Ideal of my order: I will procrastinate on all of these essays and cry at three in the morning when I still haven't done them. So now, as a fully realized "Dreamscorner" I can now control the surges of Restfulness and Hope, which I can use to stay up for days on end and push the soul-crushing emotional despair of not finishing assignments onto my enemies. You're going down.
