You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Emerald101 replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
When you wish you could be taking Calc III from @Chaos. -
Let me clarify on that WoB. From what he said, the unit of investiture will definitely be based on the breath. The hesitancy was with regard to the canon name of that unit.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Emerald101 replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
When you text your girlfriend "Women are like thunderstorms. They're nice to look at, and can be nice to listen to, but most of the time they're just plain inconvenient" (with a smile, and as a joke, of course). -
My Model of Realmatics- and speculations on aluminum
Emerald101 replied to Steeldancer's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I'll buy that the mists are Preservation's stand-in for splinters, and I agree that we do witness those effects due to the Dor. What I was saying was that the qualities we observe on Roshar that @Flash attempts to explain via a Realmatic "contraction" from heavy investiture presence aren't observed on Sel despite the heavy investiture presence there. Why would the investiture being in the cognitive instead of the spiritual affect its proposed realm-squeezing properties? Investiture transcends the three realms (source), and while its manifestations change between realms its basic properties shouldn't. I don't think spiritual investiture would have any effect one the closeness of the realms, or that at most it should have the same effect Cosmere-wide, being in the location independent spiritual.- 40 replies

My Model of Realmatics- and speculations on aluminum
Emerald101 replied to Steeldancer's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The Spiritual realm is location-independent, right? Shouldn't that render the idea of local curvature (like we see due to mass in general relativity) entirely meaningless? Further, in mistborn the mists cover the entire planet each night, yet we don't see any spren appearing or plants gaining enhanced cognitive aspects. And in Elantris we've got the Dor, containing the entire combined powers of two whole shards, sitting pressurized in the cognitive realm but witness none of the effects (leakage of cognitive aspects, enhanced cognition of flora) that you describe happening in Roshar. I like the idea, but parts of it don't seem to match reality off of Roshar.- 40 replies

Kaladin killing Syl is only proof that it doesn't work for a Windrunner. I read that as a violation of "I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right", even though he swears that later in the book. We don't have conclusive proof that a radiant acting in a manner they perceive as justified but wrong is a violation of any oaths, and the quote with reference to Machiavelli which was cited earlier implies otherwise.

Either that, or, as some have postulated, the first Ideal was added on later and doesn't actually hold realmatic weight.

You Know You're a Sanderfan When...
Emerald101 replied to Shardbearer's topic in General Brandon Discussion
But how can you claim to be a sanderfan while actively refusing to read? Reading and Sanderfanning by necessity go together. -
I am definitely interested in this. When do you think we'll know for sure on dates?

When you say "my wit is on temporary hiatus, pending review by it's colleagues sincerity and temerity" in a text to your girlfriend. -
I disagree. In the absence of Ruin I find Preservation more than capable of putting everything into stasis and keeping it that way. Ruin himself directly says that Preservation would do so, given the chance. Preservation himself describes his actions as breaking the deal. Further, IIRC the deal was that Preservation would let Ruin destroy Scadrial, which definitely didn't happen.

Except that Preservation broke the deal with Ruin . . .

Hoid knew Heralds over 4500 years before WOK
Emerald101 replied to FiveLate's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I think you're reading into this too much. Surely Hoid knows who he is and the significance of his appearance, but it's not beyond reason to assume he called Taln "my confused unfortunate friend" because he empathizes with Taln's situation and not because they actually know each other. That was what I immediately assumed when I first read the passage. It's possible that Hoid does indeed know him, considering how long Hoid's been alive and how little we understand him, I just don't think that phrase implies anything. -
I doubt it. The Stormfather tells Dalinar that he couldn't not send the visions any more than he could refuse to blow the winds, or something to that effect. I highly doubt the Stormfather could simply decide to not send any highstorms.

Unless the investiture is somehow attached to the photons from that particular star when they're generated.

I'm aware that the size isn't perfectly consistent - hence "roughly". The thing is that an object's "closeness" to human form logically shouldn't change incrementally. It should be continuous, yet the breaths required does change incrementally, because a breath is a distinct piece of investiture and doesn't divide easily - at least that's how I see it. Similarly, the amount of stormlight required to lash an object of a certain mass (or whatever else has an effect) should form a continuous curve. So to me it makes more sense that it would round up to nearest breath, just like how breaths do when awakening. The key characteristic I was thinking of wasn't the size of a breath but the fact that one breath is a discreet piece of investiture distinct from other breaths. Essentially what I'm saying is that the incremental nature is a consequence of the nature of breaths, not the system of awakening.
-
One of the interesting things about breaths is that they come in discreet packages of roughly the same size. I wonder if a lashing performed with breath as fuel would consume an uneven number of breaths (leaving the user with a partial breath) or if it would round up to the nearest breath.

oathbringer Sample Chapters Galore for Oathbringer

The entirety of part 1! I can't even convey how happy this makes me. -
The sort of things we see Renarin doing could certainly be enough to have someone committed . . .
-
There's all we know. Pattern's interest might indicate that something interesting is going on, but I don't think we have enough info to do much about it.

Those voices would happen to any in-cosmere person who went through things like Szeth did. Source

I think the location-independent nature of the Spiritual Realm makes it impossible for this to not be the case.
-
Maybe you would use an object with a lot of connection to a certain location in order to travel to that location?
-
I don't think this applies here. The right of revolution belongs to the people as a whole, and thus it can't be exercised by a single person acting alone. One person acting against a single other person - not trying to overthrow the system as a whole, not acting as the representative of the people in any way recognized by the people - is a vigilante, not a rebel acting against an oppressive government. As far as Shallan's ethics go, Adolin's actions could be considered moral but not right. "Rightness" in her terms refers to the particular actions and most immediate circumstances. Jasnah's killing in self defense was right. Morality considers intent and the greater context of the situation. Jasnah seeking out men to kill was immoral according to Shallan. And the morality of Adolin's actions is still questionable under these definitions.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Emerald101 replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I really do expect that the other realms could be accurately explained. I'd just like to know that I'm right about being able to think about the other realms in a mathematical sense.
