Oh you're right I was thinking The Name of the Wind and Wise Mans Fear were about the same length but the later is much longer. Thats impresive. Even when I had time to read 18 hours straight I couldn't have done it anywhere near that speed.
-
Wow how do you read that in 7 hours?! If I recal it's almost as long as Way of Kings. Props to your reading speed! Wise Mans Fear is worth reading but it was not as impactful for me at least as Name of The Wind. Sigh maybe someday we will get the third book...

I really liked Lightbringer Gavin is a great character. My only big issue with the series...
-
I REALLY liked Sins of Empire as well. I'm excited about this series I think it will be better than Powder Mage.

I've read a couple pretty disappointing books one being Fight and Flight the most recent Magic 2.0 book. It's like the the author ran out of antagonist so he created a completely stupid one that never really seemed to offer a genuine threat. Also tried a new author Becky Chambers The long way to a small angry planet which was billed as similar to Firefly (which I absolutely love). The character development was pretty good and produced interesting characters. The problem was the lack of plot and tension. Not sure if I'll give the next book a shot or not. Just started a biography about Elon Musk. Never thought I'd classify a biography as a page turner but man I can hardly put this thing down!

Oh wow I can't wait for you to get further along!
-
Then it may be a while before you read RPO! Man I don't think I have ever anticipated a book as much as Armada and been so let down after reading it.
-
It is pretty heavy handed with "nostalgia porn" which may not resonate with everyone especially if you did not live through the 80's and early 90's.
-
It is a very fun read. More so depending on your age and if you remember the 80s and 90s. I re-listen to it about every 6 months or so it is that fun. Unfortunately for me at least his second book Armada was a total flop.
-
Good to know I've got it on deck. Not sure if anyone else reads the Magic 2.0 books (they are my light reading when I want something easy) but the most recent book 4 is horrible. It's like they ran out of antagonist and just made one up.

I've read the Temeraire series and liked it too. Thanks for the recommendations I'll check those out.

Ok I have taken this approach on WoT when I got to points where something didn't make sense and I needed a refresher. I'd love to read it but I just do not have much time to sit with a book and do so with work and being a dad. I may give the first couple books a shot and see how it goes.

Ok I have a question. Because of my job I spend a lot of time in my car so most of my "reading" is audiobooks. I'm intrigued with the Malazan series but also intimidated because I've seen so many say it's not easy to follow. I'm the first to admit I retain more from actually reading than audiobooks. Would Malazan be a lost cause to listen to the audiobooks only?

Deaths End gets pretty deep. I like all three books and it is interesting because all three are really different.
-
It gets past that fairly quick and on to some serious sci-fi. I read the entire series it's good and gets pretty deep towards the end of the series.

Main characters from the first trilogy are Vlora and Olem. Your question is a tough one though due to possible spoilers. I can say I THINK your concern will very minimally effect your enjoyment (I even think it may change your prospective a bit on Kae-Poel indirectly it did mine). It is set in the same world just in Fatrasta about 10 years after the conclusion of the first trilogy. Interesting things are going on up there. I think this will shape up to be as good as the original trilogy. Edit: Speaking of Powder Mage I was looking for more "flintlock fantasy" and ran across Shadow Campaigns by Django Wexler (is this his real name if so this is an awesome name!). Anyone read it? Thoughts? Looks interesting and apparently I like this sub-genre.

Just finished Sins of Empire Brian McClellan's first book in his second series set in the Powder Mage world. Really good. Had a couple great twist. I think this series may end up being better than his first.

This is interesting because I thought it was just me but man I could not get in to Tigana at all. It's praised a lot and it was the first (and only) book of his I've read. I gave up about a 1/3 through I think. Is it just a slow start? I don't know exactly what it was about it besides nothing really grabbed my attention at all.

Hope this happens! I think GoT proved how well fantasy adaptations work over a TV series.
-
Same thing here. I didn't even make it to the second book though. I don't mind dark or gritty writing I just couldn't find anything to latch on to. Lightbringer is really good. Kip is a great character. I liked the last book the least (mainly just got tired of one thing not happening over and over). Really looking forward to the conclusion.

Possible my favorite sci-fi book rates right next to Dune for me. The Scholors tale is by far the best/worst thing I think I've ever read. Only worst because it hits you soooo hard in the feels. Least favorite is the Poet but even that one is good in it own way with its imperfections. The book is almost literary Sci-Fi. One of my big gripes with Sci-Fi is when the author glosses over the affect of relitivity this book handles it very well. Fair warning you may be tempted to continue with the subsequent books. The ending may not satisfy you 100% it's similar to Dune. I say stop after the first one.
-
So I stopped after Children. There are many times I think I should pick it back up. The Dune universe is almost haunting and it's killed me sometimes to think I've never seen how it ends (does it end?). I've read a few people's reviews that say you really should just stop after Dune and then just imagine the rest how ever you want.

Well yeah of course not the grasshopper hasn't taken the pebble yet. It's usually always in the "top fantasy books ever" list. I really need to read it. I've had the first book for ever. Might be up next.

@maxal I agree with your points above regarding Powder Mage. I think I mentioned when you were reading the series Borbador was my favorite character. Of course no book is perfect I still think the series is really solid.
