Where can i find a cosmere timeline?
Dunkum replied to kaladin x happiness's question in Cosmere Q&A
there is some basic info here (Beware of spoilers): https://coppermind.net/wiki/Cosmere#Chronological_Order but the short answer to your immediate question: Mistborn Era 2 takes place a few years after Stormlight, and about 300 years after Mistborn Era 1, so Stormlight is ~300 years after Mistborn era 1. -
yea, I was considering a different analogy, closer to the one you use, but didn't feel like retyping the post. the problem with just adding more copper is that there is a hard cap on how much a misting can burn and how fast. With Duralumin it may be possible, but that's one shot and all your metals are gone, plus it requires a second allomantic ability, which complicates things. someone with both Nicrosil ferruchemy and Copper allomancy might be able to manage it as well, but in either case I don't think they could sustain it very long (basically no time at all in the duralumin case). Nicrosil Compounding + Copper Allomancy is probably the best bet, but that requires 2 types of allomancy plus a ferruchemical ability to boot, and even that depends on how tapping more of an ability that you already have actually works and/or how increasing your allomantic power actually works (does it increase the rate of burning metals or how much investiture you get from burning a given amount of metal? or both? something else?). it should increase your power cap, but might (????) increase the rate you burn through your copper as well. but rationed correctly, I think this one might be able to hold its own against a KR by flaring bronze and Compounded Nicrosil to drastically increase the coppercloud strength in short bursts against the KR powers. unless you are fighting in a highstorm, in which case you may as well just give up, because the radiant isn't running out of power anytime soon. and of course, a coppercloud isn't going to do much good against just plain old stormlight enhanced punching.

we've seen a coppercloud pierced before and it definitely does not break the coppercloud, so I don't think it would in this case either. I suspect a flare of copper at exactly the right time could maybe halt things, but only if the Radiant were using just bare minimum power (or possibly lightweaving, which seems to use less invesiture than other surges), but I think it more likely it would turn a full lashing into 1/2 of a full lashing (or whatever appropriate fraction). Basically a lot of Knights Radiant powers just use tons more investiture than anything from Scadrial other than Compounding. expecting a coppercloud to repel it is like expecting a wooden shield to repel a cannonball - technically it will slow it down some, but I doubt anyone would even notice unless they had really precision measuring equipment.

Loved the series when I read it, though I think "The Golden Compass" is better than the later books. I also read "La Belle Sauvage", the first of "The Book of Dust" novels, and while it was fun, it didn't really feel like a necessary addition to the world. haven't read "The Secret Commonwealth" yet, so withholding judgement on that one. I haven't watched the TV series, though the bits I have seen or read about it look pretty decent

I think you forget that Twilight Princess was released for the Gamecube as well as the Wii. some people played it with the GC controller first and not the janky motion controls. and for what its worth - on first playthrough I think Breath of the Wild Stands out as best, but it doesn't quite old up to repeated plays. the exploration aspect is excellent, but once you've explored the whole world once, later playthroughs lose a lot of their luster. for replayability, the 2d games hold up best, IMO

Could a nicrosil compounder become more powerful than a shard?
Dunkum replied to The First Gem's question in Cosmere Q&A
Allomancy (and compounding by extension) sources its power from Preservation. At the absolute maximum a Nicrosil compounder could only pull in all of Preservation's power. Maybe all of Harmony's power, given that Preservation is sort of merged into that. but that is the theoretical limit. the practical limit would be much, much lower than that. I don't know that we have exact numbers for how much investiture you get per gram of nicrosil compounded, but i'd wager to pull in a full shard's power you would need to burn literal tons - and not just a few; we are talking billions to quadrillions of tons. basically there is WOB comparing the power of a shard to the mass of a planet, it isn't very precise but it gives a reasonable impression of the scale of what you are talking about. so if human scale allomancy usage is a few grams of metal, then shard scale would need an entire planet's worth of metal; and even just a single mountain is going to run into the billions of tons. there isn't really a way for an individual human to acquire that much nicrosil, let alone physically burn that much metal in a short enough time to hold onto it -
yea, I said "in certain circumstances" in my post above, but I do want to clarify that I meant something like this. the circumstances may have to line up, but I don't expect that it is rare, just not guaranteed.

Cultivation, in the sense of farming for instance, generally requires killing off pests and weeds, and may in fact involve killing off entire native ecosystems to make room for your preferred ones. I suspect that once she has chosen someone/thing to cultivate that she would be capable of killing threats to that thing. what's more, over generations, "cultivation" could mean killing off poorer performing crops in order to benefit the ones that have more potential. so I think she is capable of killing in certain circumstances, but it may be more difficult if the thing that needs to be removed is also something with potential for cultivation (however she defines that), in which case her intent might drive her to preserve it for growth. that is mostly speculation though

What are you playing right now?

just finished a playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. not sure how many times i've beaten it before - at least 3 or 4, probably more. but I am pretty sure this is the first time I realized that the path leading to the boss of the 8th dungeon is a hint at how to beat him. First you cut a bush with your sword, then blow up a cracked block with a bomb, 3rd shoot a seed to light torch and finally lift a heavy statue with your power glove - each one represents the weapon you need to bet the boss's 4 forms -
given the sky islands, i'd love a cameo by Levias and/or the Windfish

the usual answer for that sort of thing is that yes it could work, but it might require some tinkering or alteration to make it work (see e.g. using allomantic Bronze to detect other types of investiture beyond allomancy)

I don't think he wanted to stick around, same as the Lord Ruler - he was done and made a conscious choice not to stay
-
well, in era 1, an infected Koloss would be weaker and would likely be killed by a rival long before an infection could run its course. not sure for era 2 - i don't think we've seen much of them but I expect they work a bit differently anyway

How can Invested healing work on the Spiritual aspect?
Dunkum replied to Trusk'our's question in Cosmere Q&A
we also have a WoB that gold ferruchemy, or compounding at least, could probably heal spiritual wounds from a hemalurgic spike- 5 replies

it wouldn't exactly be easy to spike a brute ferring, at last not if they weren't cooperating and to the original question - it depends on what nicrosil ferruchemy does to your spiritweb. we have a wob that says you could spike an ability out of someone who was soulstamped, and it would work, even after the stamp expired, but soulstamps are a pretty extensive spiritweb change, if nicrosil ferruchemy is also actively modifying your spiritweb, then you should be able to spike the ability out similarly. but if it is doing something different, then maybe that wouldn't work

Excellent book and an all around excellent author. highly recommend both the follow ups to Earthsea, as well as her Hainish cycle books if you are into sci-fi

i've only played a couple of FE games, but this is me every time. even characters I never end up using I still like to get, and I don't like my guys dying, so I end up reloading a lot. I'm pretty sure the most I enjoyed an FE game was the first time through when I eventually just let people die, but I can't make myself play it that way anymore. -
it's been a bit since I last read it, so I don't remember if the structure pays off in the end. I've seen things where that sort of thing ends up working out thematically or whatever, but right now it is just frustrating
-
I picked up The Lies of Locke Lamora for a reread earlier in the week, a book I enjoyed the first time around, but this time, I just kept getting annoyed at how choppy it is, at least at the start. the firt few chapter jump around between the present day and the past in ways that just serve to break up what would be otherwise cohesive stories. I may change my mind when I have a chance to get back into it and can see how i plays out in the longrun, but right now i'd just prefer a standard prologue/timeskip vs the jumping back and forth

Dunkum replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in Entertainment Discussion
last time around when I played it, ages ago, i was using guides extensively, because there is a fair amount of stuff you can miss. I think to make it work, you have to have Odin pretty much as soon as you can get him. but its great because you get used to the idea that Odin will sometimes show up at the start of a fight to murder everything and then you get to a storming Boss fight and here comes Odin when you least expect him! and then Seifer just kills him. -

I should probably give FF VIII another chance one of these days....once I replace my now broken PS2. it is one of my least favorites in the series. that sid, it does have on of my favorite scenes - if you have Odin prior to one of the Seifer fights (I forget which), Odin will come out at the beginning and try to Zantetsuekn Seifer, only for Seifer to just murder him. -
Been a bit since I read it, but as I recall his sort of spiral into depression acts as a way of enhancing his connection to Ruin, enough so that he can pick it up.

A lot gin on here, so I'll take ti one piece at a time The Spiritual Realm is the Realm that the energy (technically the term here is investiture) comes from for Allomancy. when you burn a metal, you create a link to Preservation's investiture in the Spiritual Realm which flows into you in a specific form based on which metal you burnt (technically Atium works differently because ti is a god-metal, but this is true for the rest). likewise Hemalurgy interacts with it as well because that is where an individual's spiritweb (essentially soul) is located, and Hemalurgy tears off pieces of that. this basic principle is going to hold true for most magic systems - the Spiritual Realm is the source of the power, and the location of certain aspects of a person, such as their identity and connections etc. the Cognitive Realm is a bit weirder. Some magic systems have cognitive interactions that aren't specifically interactions with the Cognitive Realm. Healing, for instance - magical healing in the Cosmere generally heals you by making your physical body match your cognitive (and spiritual) version of yourself. so if you lost a limb and got used to it to the point that you see yourself as being 1-armed, then if you were to be Healed, you might not regenerate the arm, even if the healing power were capable of it, vs if you cognitively saw it as being an issue, then you could heal it, given enough power. likewise in Mistborn, a Tin Ferruchemist can store senses, but if someone spent time learning about the brain and how it processes sensory input then they might have a different view of what are senses than the traditional 5 senses, and would theoretically be able to store to a tinmind that way (e.g. sense of balance or sense of pain as separate senses). that's a cognitive thing, but doesn't really ave anything to do with the cognitive realm. On the other hand you will see (probably have seen) in Stormlight magic systems that do directly interact with the Cognitive Realm in very obvious ways. also, due to some weirdness there, the magic systems on Sel (Elantris, the Emperors Soul) get their power from the Cognitive Realm. as to whether there are always 3 arts to a planet - he short answer is No. Hemalurgy can, in theory, steal just about anything, but several of the other magic systems have additional restraints on them tat make it a bit more complicated. e.g. Awakening requires Breath, and is automatically granted if you acquire Breath, so not any point in using Hemlurgy there. Selish Magic systems, like the Aon Dor require a Connection to a specific location on Sel, and even if you get that, getting that magic to work at a distance takes additional effort. but for a simple example you could steal Snd Mastery from a Snd Master in the White Sand books, as long as you had the right metal and knew what you were doing. it is possible to get access to other magic systems, but if you weren't born on that world, sometimes it takes extra work is all. Lerasium granting Allomancy is on of the easiest. Spren granting Surges is another relatively straightforward one, though taking the Spren offworld is a challenge the main difference is that a ferruchemical charge is lost when you use it. so you can tap a nicrosilmind nd gain, for instance, Gold Ferruchemy, but once the nicrosilmind runs out you lose it. with the proper Hemalurgic spike, you would have that power until the spike is removed - and could gain it back by re-inserting the spike. the Ire are originally from Sel and their magic fades if they go to far from their home. not even just homeworld - we see Elantrian magic is weaker the further they get from Elantris. Offworld, without some shenanigans to handle this, it would be negligible. point being, this is a problem specific to the Ire and other Selish worldhoppers, not to everyone. This goes back to Realmic stuff. A cognitive shadow, by default, is just the cognitive aspect, unbound from the physical. I don't know if we have a whole lot of info on why Kelsier is different from a Shade, but Threnody has some weird stuff going on. they just happen, but the shards are able to exert some influence on them afterwards, eg. when Preservation changed how snapping worked in order to send a message

When did fandom learn about the shattering?
Dunkum replied to SarChasmFiend's question in Cosmere Q&A
Stormlight Archive, especially the epigraphs, seems to be the most Cosmere aware out of the the main novels. either that or Mistborn era 2. I know Wit specifically asks Dalinar about Adonalsium at some point in SA, probably book 1 or 2, but i'm not positive about which one. so those would be solid bets.
