If memory serves, you'll get a solid answer on it later on. though the fact that there are 11 more books in the series should probably suggest something.

I think you are basically correct: a coppercloud won't prevent a tineye from hearing what is going on within, because a coppercloud blocks investiture not physical sounds. to your other question, tineyes still have limitations, and soft speech blocked by walls, or surrounded by other sounds will be harder and harder to hear. A good tineye might be able to pick out one soft conversation amongst dozens, an a savant could probably manage it, but just your average tineye would have trouble. likewise for walls and additional distance - the more obstructions and distance between the source of the sound and the listener, the harder it is to hear, same as for anyone, really, its just that the tineye has a better baseline because of their enhanced senses. Most of the crew have experience with mistbron and tineyes, and would generally be familiar with what a tineye's limitations are, and would probably be able to keep themselves unheard by any but a savant.

seconded. Denna annoys me, as does Kvothe's infatuation with her. Devi is pretty solid. I also like Auri (especially after reading Slow Regard for Silent Things) and the master namer (whose name I have, ironically, forgotten) and a few others. I'm personally also fond of the sort of themes of storytelling that pervades the whole thing. It ties together some of the more disparate elements in ways that they wouldn't quite manage on their own.

Is that how Injera is made? Spongy is definitely the word to describe it. To the pancakes thing, have a look at the "pancakes" that are served alongside Mu-shu pork in chinese restaurants. that is more along the lines of what I was imagining during Edgedancer. those, while made with flour, are much closer to a tortilla than to what I would generally term a pancake.

been a while since my last mistborn reread, but were they consistently using the swords as primary weapons, or were they picking them up, getting in a few hits, then leaving them behind? I think it was closer to the latter - hitting a koloss with the sword then dropping it and steelpushing off it to the next target - but I could be misremembering. But if i'm right, then that is a completely different sort of fighting style, and one that doesn't rely on using the sword particularly efficiently.

just wanted to point out that this specific matchup would never take place on an arena floor I actually think an arena would be to Vin's advatage - lots more places to use as anchors for pushes means more maneuverability for her, getting her closer to Kaladin's level. If they were to fight on a flat plain, she'd have more trouble.
-
With no plate, I don't see Kaladin winning. Vin can just pepper him with coins until he runs out of stormlight and stops healing. If he fought with a shield, that would change things a bit, since he could use gravitation to deflect coins into his shield, but he generally doesn't, so he wouldn't have a lot of opportunity to use that ability. Vin is already used to fighting opponents who can 1. kill with a single hit and 2. more or less fly, so while Kaladin would be better at both of those than a mistborn, i doubt the difference would be enough that Vin couldn't handle it.

Don't have time to dig up the quote right now, but there are up to 3 Bondsmiths at any time. The current assumption is that the other 2 bondsmiths each bond a different unique spren, but we don't yet know what the other spren are. The Nightwatcher is currently considered pretty likley as the 2nd and "the sibling" is often considered to be the third, but we don't know either thing for a fact, and we know almost nothing about the sibling.

I haven't been paying attention, didn't realize Peace Talks was out. Was going to say I picked a bad time to start a WoT reread, but I just went to the library website and put a hold on Peace Talks - I'm number 30 in line; though they do have 5 copies going around, so that should help.

What are some of your favorite scenes in the WOT?
Dunkum replied to Axsaul's topic in The Wheel of Time
already been metnioned, though further down than I'd have expected, but Mat's sparring match against Galad and Gawain while he is still healing. Also, Faile's induction into things where someone casually mentions that Mat blew the Horn of Valere, and she is just completely floored. Perrin in Tel Aran Riod (or however you spell that, its been a while) during his fight with slayer and Egwene's fight with Messana where he just casually blocks balefire, leaving Egwene nearly speechless. And quite of bit of the Egwene vs Elaida stuff was nice too, especially once Egwene decides to try to be a unifying force, not a sabeteur. -
Favorite: Dragon Reborn, btu the next 2 or 3 after that are pretty good too. Least: Path Of Daggers, for the reasons already mentioned. Eye of the Word and the Great Hunt are close behind though, at least partly because Mat isnt a perspective character in them either. I'm in a bit of a weird position, though: I got The Dragon Reborn for christmas one year, but neither of the first 2 books. after at least a couple tries to find them at the library, i gave up and just started in with book 3, so by the time i got back around to the first 2....they felt boring.

it gets better, but if memory serve it takes a bit.

I'd probably guess Listener Warform is higher than base Elantrian, and that a Returned is probably higher than someone holding stormlight. I also think that i'd put ferruchemist above duralumin+pewter, but at that point it really depends on how much pewter vs how much ferruchemical charge.

Who are the most boring characters in Stormlight Archive
Dunkum replied to Bearer of all agonies's question in Cosmere Q&A
Depressed Kaladin. I like him most of the time, but whenever he gets to a low point, and gets more depressed, he gets introspective and inactive which is often pretty boring to read, especially when it means he is interacting less with the people around him who generally tend to be pretty interesting.. -
Postmortal consequences of hemalurgy with respect to a emotional Allomancy
Dunkum replied to Oltux72's question in Cosmere Q&A
could you become a returned under those circumstances? its entirely plausible that Endowment would simply not send you back. but my guess is that if it happened, then yes, you would be subject to control, but it might be harder to manage since the divine breath represents quite a bit of investiture, which should interfere with things. possibly it would interfere with the spikes and render it so you can't be controlled, but I doubt that. it should, however interefere with the emotional allomancy, I would think, which means you'd likely need more soothers or rioters to accomplish the control -
right, i meant specifically the hemalurgically charged portion, which will, overall, be a pretty small peice, since a hemalurgic charge isn't generally a huge amount of investiture. you can definitely burn the rest of the spike as normal
-
A couple things: 1. it would be hard to add a hemalurgic charge to a metalmind, since it is already pretty invested. but the opposite direction works just fine - using an existing spike as a metalmind, that is - so the basics are still possible 2. when burning a metalmind, it isn't quite that you have a choice between regular allomancy and compounding, it is more that for the most part the metal is not completely full of ferruchemical charge, so the charged portions can be compounded, but not burned for normal allomancy, while the uncharged portions can be burned for regular allomancy but not compounded. based on this WOB: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/98-worldbuilders-ama/#e860 3. So it seems like this should more or less work as follows: in the piece of metal, you have a portion of it storing a hemalurgic charge, a portion storing a ferruchemical charge, and an uncharged/normal portion. when attempting to burn the metal you would be able to choose which segment to burn. however since a hemalurgic spike has a piece of someone else's spirit, i'm not sure you could burn it (like trying to burn someone else's metalmind). if you can, then it seems like it ought to work similarly to compounding ferruchemy, though.

Why Radiants are incredibly overpowered, and Mistborn aren't.
Dunkum replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well, at least a few of us have been at this all day, and I don't think anyone's mind is being changed here. We're past the point where I feel like arguing further is going to persuade anyone, including whomever else is reading this thread and not commenting, so I plan to leave 1 last post, attempting to sum up my position, and leave it at that (we'll see if i manage this without gettign sucked back in): so basically, we have 2 cases, the Atium case and the non-atium case. I think I generally agree with the point that a Mistborn's abilities are generally going to have a very hard time against a radiant with plate and sword in the non-atium case. Coins alone won't crack plate. With Duralumin they probably could, though I still think it would take several hits to break a section, but duralumin is a risky move, and duralumin + steel espceically so - with no steel any mobility advantage drops drastically. regular (maybe flared) steel with a sufficiently heavy anchor might be able to manage it as well, but even so that isn't going to be enough. between stormlight healing the body, and the potential for stormlight to heal the plate itself (which I agree is likely), the radiant is unlikely to be much deterred by that. the same more or less applies with pewter with the added concern that being that close leaves you vulnerable to hits by plate and sword, either of which can be deadly. even if we add in the era 2 metals and allow them those, I don't see it changing the balance much. with some luck, and/or more or less perfect form it isn't impossible to win, but its not a fight they should take if they have any other option. way I see it, a mistborn has less than 1% chance of winning here, except maybe in a city, with lots and lots of metal around for them to use as anchors and weapons, maybe. on an empty stretch of the shattered plains they might have a slim chance as well, using the terrain to their advantage against the 8 orders that can't fly, but on an empty level plain, it pretty much is always going to go to the radiant. With Atium is a different story. as mentioned this isn't an automatic win, but I think those arguing against this are discounting just how powerful atium is, and overestimating just how debilitating a head/brain injury would be, even with stormlight healing. A skilled mistborn with atium to guide them should be able to pull off a kill shot if one presents itself. and they are going to be able to dodge just about anything that gets sent their way. and a steelpushed coin or even a dagger through the eyeslit should be disruptive enough to allow for further damage, again with atium to guide the attacks. a radiant fighting defensively may be able to avoid presenting a target until the atium runs out, in which case we are back to the above case, but I don't consider this to be especially likely - the only way to avoid presenting a target is largely to keep your eyes covered, which will render them mostly blind, not generally considered a good fighting strategy. a very clever radiant may be able to maneuver the mistborn into a no win scenario, in which case the atium won't help, but this is extremely difficult - you'd need to get them into a position where even their future sight wouldn't be sufficient to dodge or block the incoming attack. I can think of scenarios that might work - figthing inside a cave, for instance, and simply bringing the entire roof down with cohesion (i think that would be the right surge for this) - but i'm not sure how you'd get a mistborn into that position in the first place. I said before that the mistborn gets a kill 70% of the time in this scenario and survives until the atium runs out upward of 90%, and I stand by it - precision and dexterity from pewter, foresight from atium and maneuverability from steel and iron and, if needed, a burst of raw power from duralumin should be enough to get them through this fight. Even so, i think a radiant has a much better chance against a mistborn with atium than a mistborn without atium has against a radiant. I haven't touched on era 2 at all, since obviously there are no mistbron in era 2 and no atium, at least not generally accessible, but we know guns can crack plate, so if you did have a mistborn, and especially if you could give them a gun like vindication, then i think, even without atium, that they'd have a reasonable chance. with atium id bet on gun-weilding mistborn probably 95% of the time. at any rate, that's where i stand, and at this point you either agree with it or not. I doubt further dicussion will make much difference either way. -
Why Radiants are incredibly overpowered, and Mistborn aren't.

hmm, I remember that now that you say it, but I don't think thats related to Transportation. most likely just adrenaline and stormlight. the transformation part obviously a form of soulcasting -

can you point me to that? I dont remember anything like that happening. I do remember her soulcasting people left and right. -
Why Radiants are incredibly overpowered, and Mistborn aren't.
Dunkum replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Abrasion is good, but isnt nearly on the level of steel + iron in the hands of a skilled mistborn, especially if the hypothetical fight is set somewhere like a city or the shattered plains where there are various elevation changes and sheer sides and places to use to anchor coins. Wax, with just steel, can practically fly, and vin and kelsier do even better in most places. we don't know all that much about how the transportation surge works. pretty sure we've only seen it used twice, both times for jumps between physical and cognitive, and never from the persepctive of the person doing it. without more information, I don't think we can reliably say one way or the other how much it would help. from what we've seen gravitation is the only surge that we can be sure is a match for iron and steel in terms of mobility. and for what its worth, gravitation is better in the hands of someone practiced with it than steel/iron are. fewer limitations, more control, and less chance of interference by having someone say destroy the rock formation your coin was pushign on. -

Dunkum replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
even if they have to get up close, they will know in advance where the weapon and armor are going. and with pewter and steel increasing speed and maneuverability should be able to dodge. it doesnt matter how strong and fast the opponent is if you know where their attack is going to go in advance (up to a point anyway - the faster the opponent, the more likely they will be able to react, but radiants aren't at that level). until the atium runs out a radiant will have a ton of trouble hitting a mistborn. A good tactitcian migth be able to maneuver them into a scenario where they can't dodge - it is theoretically possible; and it is also possible that the radiant can figth defensively enough to avoid giving the mistborn a chance to hit. those scenarios can both happen. but i'd say that while they have atium, a mistborn has upwards of 90% chance of surviving (varying a little bit depending on the order they are fighting) and probably a 70% chance of being able to deliver a killing blow, varying a little based on order, but more based on how the opponent fights. that latter drops to near 0 without atium, and survivabilty depends on their willingness to just run away, which is the only way they are surviving long term without atium. -

they're burnign atium, so yes. that's like the primary benefit of atium. -
Why Radiants are incredibly overpowered, and Mistborn aren't.
Dunkum replied to Frustration's topic in Cosmere Discussion
sure, and the only way I see a mistborn having a chance is with Atium. the rest of their metals simply arent strong enough to overcome the combination of plate, blade, and stormlight healing. Any 1 of those they might be able to manage, but against all 3, they don't have much they can do. to your points: yes, a radiant would protect their eyeslit, but there is only so much you can do there - try too hard and you blind yourself and can't attack. at some point it will have to be open. to the second point, a radiant holding stormlight isn't automatically dead to most things, but a head shot would most likely do it, and we are talking about a shot straight to the eyes and into the skull. that's going to be a kill shot in almost every case - unless they are actively dumping stormlight into healing themselves in preparation, and even then it might be disruptive enough and/or difficult enough to heal that they'd die. basically, intent matters a lot in the cosmere, and its hard to have intent with a scrambled brain. to the third - it is true that the possibility exists that even with Atium there is simply no win condition. if they had enough atium, i imagine one would eventually show itself, but that stuff burns fast, so it is possible that there is simply never an opportunity to attack before it runs out, but I think in most cases there will be something, and atium enhances the mind to better take advantage of the information it provides - I don't doubt that if a mistborn burning atium sees an opening that they could take it and hit. remember we are talking a skilled mistborn - if our radiant has full plate and blade, then our mistborn has to be similarly skilled with their powers, and that is going to include aiming shot coins - again with the advantage of atium telling them precisely where and when it needs to go.
