I believe it has a lot to do with the current culture in society and in college. In the first, there has been a prevalent idea that fields that are heavy on mathematics/logic are better suited to the male mind and that females, in general, are not as capable in this as men. This is erroneous, there is nothing to demonstrate this aside from "the Powers that Be" say it is so. However, you are left with women constantly being bombarded with the idea that they are somehow naturally less rational than men. They are told they are failures even before they enter college. This is changing, but it's new enough that we will still see the effects of the old social order for a while yet. The other issue seems to be that college is more and more being viewed as a "job training" institute and not a learning institute. As a result, you are seeing the humanities being belittled as being "pointless" or "valueless". Essentially, the viewpoint that a class is worthless unless it directly contributes to you getting a high salary job is prevalent and getting more so. The first point probably has more to do with your concern whereas the second point is just me on my own soapbox.

Personally, I like it. You have to be somewhat direct/forward in conversations such as these, that better serves the purpose of improving or authenticating your argument. For example, I have had some philosophy classes in the university but it is not my field. I like to read some books on it from time to time, but the selection is slim, so I usually have to rely on what little I remember from class and my interpretation. Case in point: I think I've had fifteen minutes of instruction with regards to Rawl's veil of ignorance in an ethics class. We did not deal with it as being strictly about distributive justice and I have often thought of it as an improvement on Kant's first categorical imperative. One learns from forward discussion!

It seems implicit in the problem that you are responsible to convey the passengers safely to their destination. If such trust matters to you, option one it's not an option. This would be because your responsibility is the predominate moral here, since it is impossible to avoid killing anyone. The choice between the other options depends on if the immorality of killing is cumulative (killing 50 is more immoral than killing 10) or acute (killing is just wrong, doesn't matter how little you do it) . In the acute sense, it doesn't matter which option you choose, what you do will end up being immoral. In the cumulative sense, you'd be morally obligated to kill as few people as possible. And if you apply the Veil of Ignorance, you'd probably choose to run over the ten because at that point, it's a numbers game.

The important question is which group had Sanderson in it? You'll want to avoid that group. If he has the sense to not loiter on train tracks, which group has the cutest boy/girl that you would like to ask out? And if they say 'no' or 'I'm already spoken for' you can always back the train up...

Gather round, children, and I shall reveal unto you a secret! My current avatar is an engraving of Don Quijote going mad with chivalrous literature. It was created by Gustave Doré.

Everyone else is too nice to tell you, but it sounds like you've been possessed by void spern. I suggest plenty of bed rest and several glasses of fresh squeezed lime juice

So, we know Nale is going around killing awakened Radiants, but he is also completely capable of bringing them back to life, even from Death by Shardblade (like you see in the original ending of WoR. Brandon once said he wanted to show that such a thing was possible, which is why that ended up in there originally. So though Szeth's death is different now, we still know that it is possible). When Nale resurrected Szeth, he said that his death set him free of his past commitments (possibly "cleansed him" I can't remember the exact words and do not have my book present to check for exact quotes). So my ponderance is: what if Nale is not only killing Radiants to satisfy some requirement of justice, but is also resurrecting at least some of them to refound an Order of the Radiants?

That's Quijote to you! For upsetting some Cosmere theorist with your humor and thus bringing his immense wrath upon you in the form of a singular downvote! Oh, Kipper! Felled in his prime! WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE BEEN ME?!

Will Orlion finish reading his massive book on The Spanish Civil War before the end of the year? Will he continue instead to postpone it instead?

Searching with no luck. (new books)

Depends on how "deep" you want to go. Esslemont's books are more supplemental than essential to any overarching plot. I would say read Erikson's ten book series first and if you must, you can read Esslemont's books/Erikson's novellas and "prequel trilogy". -
So some evil guy unleashed a giant monster that looked like a purple Sweetums (a brown Muppet) that was destroying a town in California that consisted mostly of buildings with classic Mickey Mouses on them. I joined forces with some Asian chick that wanted to avenge her family against the evil guy and two other folks to pilot a giant robot to defeat the monster. I was in control of the arms. As we were searching for the monster, fireworks were going off and we were attacked by another giant robot that looked like Classic Gigantor, who was presumably there to destroy the monster but decided we were the enemy as well. As it lunged at us with his spear, I grabbed it from him and knocked him on his chull, to which he replied, "Don't use my spear!" I knew instinctively that if I followed his instructions, we would get an S+ rating on this mission but I also did not care. So when we found the monster, I stabbed him and whacked him a few times whilst he tried to hit us with some wet, rotten driftwood. This continued and he shrank the more purple blood he lost, until he was small enough for whoever was controlling the legs to stomp on him.

I actually secretly hope the Elantris sequel will be written between Oathbringer and Stormlight 4. T'is a dangerous hope... but it wouldn't be a Hope of Elantris if it was not somewhat perilous!- 58 replies

For being a connoisseur of bookies... and not the guys who take bets, but the small adorable book kinds!

Sorry to hear that. Whether it is sudden or a gradual drifting apart, losing a good friend always sucks. I hate those thoughts. Unfortunately, they occur when you care deeply about someone (or some pet!), you just need to knuckle through and not let them defeat you (which it looks like you're doing, so my advice is superfluous!) When I have similar thoughts about my cat, I like to Rick-Roll him.... you know, sing "Never goin' give you up, never goin' let you down..." Some endearing silliness goes a long way, and you'll find you can always put what you care about first.

It is, which is why I'm not expecting the book before 2017. If it does arrive next year: fantastic! I'll sacrifice an unblemished goat in celebration. But in my case, I find it's better to expect something later than to expect it sooner and have it end up being later.Shadows of Self being so awesome and having White Sand to look forward to also helps- 58 replies
