@McKeedee: You might be interested in reading up more about back burning. It's a technique sometimes used for clearing land, or preventing uncontrolled fires from arising.

Mailliw, could you elaborate? I'm not completely sure I understand. gwslow & McKeedee: I've edited your parts of the map. Please check if it's acceptable.

Yes, but Series 9 isn't split in half like Series 6 & 7 were. So unless she disappears mid-series, she will tie with Amy Pond for series count. (I think they shortened the episode count in each series from 13 to 12, so she might be slightly less by episode count, however.)

Okay, for the 'Who gets what' map, I have a few things. (And Lindel, it will be a while until we start doing individual work, I'm just trying to make sure that we're ready to go at the end of the group planning stage) Mailliw: I think the area that you mentioned is technically steppes, not desert (but I think it could still work for herding otters). If you have an issue, just say something. gwslow: Can you see the map to confirm that you're happy with those areas? Edgedancer: I've temporarily placed you the top half of the main mountain ranges. If you're not happy with that, just let me know. (If you are happy with that, let me know anyway.) Winter: I need a lot more information than that, Winter. There is dark brown (steppes) and light brown (desert). Then, you can still decide whether you want to be near the coast, etc.

@Mailliw: Do you still want mountains in your area, or not? (I know the general area you're talking about, I just need to sort out details.)

I'll start a poll about all of this as soon as a Diaemus subforum is up, just for clarity. I know that a lot of people are tossing around ideas at the minute, but there seem to be more theories than people at the minute (which is perfectly fine, by the way. Early stages, and all of that.) In response to this specific theory, I'd just like a clarification. Do the lumuoles 'leak' magic into the minerals, plants, etc. or do they just stand nearby. I think the former would be better, as it allows the magic to influence the biology to a certain extent, which seems to be a popular idea on this thread. But if that's the case, then it seems to imply that the lumuoles have either create magic from somewhere or gather it. Gathering it would require it migrating from - somewhere, and creating it would require a process sort of similar to photosynthesis, where you input a number of properties, and get... magic.

This is a fairly major events, and it seems likely (if Brandon sticks to his current format) that we will see either 5 or possibly 10 versions of what happened that night. So I was surprised to see that there was no page on it on the Coppermind. Either: a ) I'm blind; b ) Someone's working on it on their user page, or; c ) Someone needs to get to work on it Is there an 'Assassination of Gavilar' page in the works, or should I start on it? (Is there any way of telling whether a user is creating a page on their user page?)

Yes, but the area you originally indicated wasn't jungle, it was rainforest, which made me slightly confused. Do you want me to put you in the rainforest instead? (Just a note, rainforests are dark green, jungles are blue-green).

Okay... In terms of lumuoles vs. minerals, how about this? (P.S. This is just an expansion of what Sir Jerric said.) So lumuoles, for whatever reason, have gained access to 'magic'. It's not one particular kind of magic, it's just sort of... there. However, when it dies, it's magic begins to 'leak' into the ground surrounding it, eventually reaching mineral deposits. From there, depending on what kind of mineral it reaches, it alters the form of magic to whatever. I know that sounds a bit Mistborn-y, but I think that's as good a compromise as we're going to get. It means that theoretically, people still have access to lumuoles and minerals without them being mutually exclusive. What do you guys think? Also, Venture, is this the area you wanted? I haven't given you the whole area of the yellow just yet, but if no-one else puts their hand up for that, I'll adjust it.

While I speak English as my native language, I do speak a secondary language (German), and I would be terrified at the thought of trying to write in that language. I would recommend you write in your native language, and maybe if you have a finished first draft, you can start translating during your editing process. That's just me guessing, however. Being honest, I've never been in your situation, and I don't know whether I have the best answer.

I'll create a map for who is getting what chunks of the world (though I won't spend too much time or effort on it for now - there might be some version errors between our cartographer and me if he decides to make changes). So far, only Mailliw has claimed a chunk (I'm not counting people who mentioned regions before the map was made. I would prefer something more specific). Just to clarify, Mailliw, was this the bit you were thinking of? It was the only place where jungle, mountain and forest collided that I could see. If you'd like to adjust, just say. P.S. My underground caverns could fit anywhere, preferably in a D section, but I'll add it in last.

I agree. Everybody else in fantasy seemed either permanently gloomy or completely naive and irritating. Sanderson's characters are more immediately relatable, without the sole purpose of backstory simply to make the character relatable in the first place. Sanderson just makes them like that without thinking about it (or if he does, he does it very, very cleverly).

Don't start talking too soon, Quiver. They said almost exactly the same thing for after the last Christmas Special, and that turned out to be false information. Even if those rumors did have slightly less detail.

Permission to ask Chaos to make a subforum for this? I think by the end of this we'll have enough pages to warrant this. As it is, we could probably do with a species page, a map/ worldbuilding page, a magic page, a general Q&A/miscellaneous thread, and that's before we start the actual writing itself. (We could have it all on one thread, but I think it will get confusing very quickly.) Perhaps overboard right now, but I think it will be necessary later on.

Please note: Anything stated here is open to negotiation, depending on how it fits in with the world. Magic: I think everyone's gone with rare here, so I'll go with the flow. Though, at risk of asking a premature question, what kind of magic should it be? Climate: If we're dividing the world into small chunks, why don't we have a universe where the world has localized weather? So, you could be in a jungle, but walk 50km to the east, and you're in a desert. Potential theory to how this might work... Maybe the abundance of magic in a particular area changes the weather? So, Type A magic in abundance increases temperature/ humidity, while Type B magic decreases temperature/ humidity? My choice of climate for my chunk: Underground caverns. At risk of being cliched, I think they have a lot of potential. The reason in my head for this at the moment is that the surface was somehow unsafe, maybe from extreme temperatures or something. I read somewhere that deserts get extremely cold by night, while remaining hot by day, so maybe if we magnify that effect? Also, what era is the tech in this? Or does it depend on the species/ area you're in?

I see. Would the Anti-Bakery League be on this alley, perhaps?

Please, please, please... That sounds awesome! (Also, did anyone think of "the Hall of the Kobold King" when you read that description, or am I just a huge classical fan.)

worldbuilding Cosmere City: Worldbuilding thread

Is going into backstory allowed? I was thinking about it, but decided against going into too much detail before. Also, did you forget to post the backstory itself? Or do you want someone else to post now? -
Who is in the books covers?
Young Bard replied to Hoid Is Dead's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I don't think it's usually intentional to have a real life person be a model for a character, it just so happens that the cover artist paints what they think of in their head for the character, and that is usually subconsciously based off someone in real life. For instance, Brandon has mentioned the increasing likeness between Waxillium and Tom Cruise, but that wasn't intentional on Chris McGrath's side, just something he had in his mind when he drew it.
