  1. Posted Today, 04:36 AM Edgedancer, on 09 Jan 2015 - 10:49 AM, said: From my "Prof's weakness" thread on the Firefight spoilers board. This might just end up being my costume...
  2. I'm pretty tempted to dress in my own Instabam costume for the Philly signing of Firefight now...
  3. Yeah, it's hard to say exactly. I think that things will be much clearer after the Dalinar perspective book... Is Adolin confirmed as getting one of the ten books? I feel like I saw a list at one point, and I know that Dalinar, Szeth and Eshonai are confirmed from the SotS we got in December... I'm curious, kari-no-sugata, what did you think of my assessment of Dalinar presenting ENFJ qualities because of Tanavast being an ENFJ? \ Also, gjustice99, my best friend is an ISTP. It's a pretty fun type.
  4. Argent, that is an awesome question. I'm going to the Philly signing of Firefight; I'll ask him then. Let's hope it doesn't get RAFO'd.
  5. Curiosity, I agree with you that MBTI are general descriptions - description pairs, I'd say, with sliders on them. Like temperature, but instead of "hot" on one end and "cold" on the other, you have "intuitive" on one end and "sensing" on the other. Everybody falls somewhere on that scale, so you might have two people with the same personality type that are drastically different because of where each of their personalities fall on those four sliders. So, it's very possible that you have stronger areas of I, N and J, but your T/F is more nearly towards the center. The biggest difference between NFs and NTs is that NFs tend to be champions of ideals and focused on personal growth, where NTs tend to focus on changing big pictures (hence the "webs" I spoke of with Jasnah and Hoid) and focused on personal accomplishment. The very best resource on MBTI is David Keirsey's book "Please Understand Me II." It is not necessary to have read the original "Please Understand Me" to read II. I recommend that you read a hardcover version rather than an e-book, as it is a reference material and you will often find yourself wanted to flip back to other sections as you come to understand various aspects of the types differently.
  6. One thing that I really love about Brandon is that he not only has a closer-to-reality ratio of types (IRL, for example, SJs make up around 40-45% of the population, but they are incredibly rare characters to find in fiction, probably since fiction-writing is a job much more likely to interest non-SJ types), but he does a great job of showing that any personality type can make for an interesting and compelling character.
  7. Hmmm, ok, Curiosity, I'm going to type a few Rosharians. Here are some of the ones I've given some thought to: Dalinar: ESTJ Adolin: ESFJ Shallan: INFJ Kaladin: ISFP Jasnah: INTJ Wit/Hoid: ENTP Some of them seem pretty obvious to me (Shallan, Jasnah, Hoid), but others I'll give a bit of extra justification for. If someone asks for clarification on any of the ones I've only touched on, I'll be glad to give it. As usual, I'll spoiler up my reasons, since they will contain myriad little bits of spoilers. So there you have it. What do you think? Agree or disagree? I'd love to have some discussion about this... EDIT: I linked each of their types to pages with descriptions and examples of those types.
  8. This is the best thing I've ever seen.
  9. Thought it would be interesting to discuss the Myers-Briggs Personality Types (MBTI) for the different Cosmere characters. Since I didn't see anyone else doing this, and I'm a bit of an MBTI junkie, I thought I'd start a thread. So, since I just finished reading "Sixth of the Dusk" for the first time, and it really only has two human characters of note, I thought I'd start with typing Dusk and Vathi. Much easier than trying to type every charactert in, say, the Stormlight Archives. So, here goes: Dusk: ISTP Vathi: ENFP I'm going to spoiler up my descriptions of why, because they contain lots of little spoilery tidbits. EDIT: 1/12/XV, 10:00 PM Hmmm, ok, since Curiosity asked, I'm going to type a few Rosharians. Thank you for the suggestion, Curiosity.
  10. The forcefield did stop bullets when Abraham was shot in the Undercity of Newcago. I think it's more likely that Megan had the rifle simply shoot through the wall, it is more than powerful enough. Officially off of probation.
  11. Maybe it works like Steelheart's weakness - that is to say, only a certain kind of person can negate his powers. In Prof's case, that would mean that a person who he'd failed to beat in some kind of contest could defeat him. So, when he failed to kill David, he actually was vulnerable to David killing him. He wasn't vulnerable to Megan because he hadn't really entered into a contest with her, in his mind. He probably was afraid to do so without knowing exactly how her powers work (and rightfully so, it seems like she could effectively block most Epic's powers by employing her heart little universe switcheroo power), so he fled rather than risk actually challenging her and failing. This makes him quite formidable: As long as he keeps fighting, he cannot be defeated.
  12. The theory I'm going by now is that Prof's weakness is failing to do something that he has deliberately chosen to do. So walking down the street, etc, things that he does by instinct wouldn't set of his "contest" trigger, but making an actual decision to do something would. This also is lent some credence by the fact that he always takes so long to make his plans concrete, and had lots of open ends in them.
  13. I feel sure I can't be the only one who hears every single line of Cody's in the voice of Scooter from the Borderlands series of video games. Catch A Ride!
  14. I say Nichelle Nichols for Regalia. She is still a fantastic actress, and just the right age.
  15. Brandon did say something about a film version already in some kind of early stages right in the acknowledgements of Steelheart, so I'm guessing that they went into this with some of those pieces already in motion. YA fantasy/sci-fi is such a huge market for film right now, so it isn't too surprising.
  16. Does that make Tia Ground Control?
  17. Calamity himself, assuming that he is indeed a High Epic.
  18. Ha! Nice. Yes, both started with an action-packed Epic takedown, but it both cases it was there pretty much to kickstart the action, rather than having a proud impact on the rest of the book. I feel like Calamity can forgo this kind of hook, since we already have three High Epics that need to be dealt with, right from the get-go.
  19. And that is a terrifying possibility... Though it seems like an eventuality that they would've prepped for. Either way, I suspect that Calamity will start out much faster-paced than either of the first two books did, jumping right into the action.
  20. Yep, that's what I was thinking, ChocolateRob. As if Megan wasn't awesome enough already.
  21. Interesting. That could definitely go hand-in-hand with his dislike of contests... especially in something like a slot machine, where he's likely to fail more often than not. That could also make for an interesting moment of truth for him in his redemption (or failure therein) - having to decide to deliberately fail in order to face his fear.
  22. Same as Kurkistan.
  23. So is the screaming confirmed as RAFO?
  24. Did anybody else notice the suspicious little blurb about Prof's dislike of contests? Before Calamity, he even refused to put a quarter in a slot machine. I wonder if this could be a clue...
