  1. That is exactly the point though Outis. They didn't want to spend 1000 breaths to create something that would serve a definite purpose and then be used up. Of course they want to give it a nebulous target. If they gave it a specific one they have now spent 1000 breaths for nothing. Destroy Evil is a deliberately vague command but one that also puts safeguards in place to keep it from causing massive damage in their eyes. Seeing the actual quote I believe my interpretation was wrong though. It does look pretty clearly like Shashara was intending to create a sentient object. However, even with that taken into account, this was the first such experiment. No one knew what Nightblood was going to be like. No one knew how sentient or how intelligent it would be. Therefore it is still logical to give it the same kind of command you would give any other awakened object. Umm...that's exactly how awakening worked in the book. The commands given are usually vague like that. Vasher gives the command "Grab Things", not "Grab that guy over there".
  2. This is no contest. Just the presence of Fabrials alone means that the Alethi will win any seige contest because they have no need of supply lines. The Alethi have magic on their side. No one in Westeros does (at least not openly). Only possible contest I would question is whether a Shardblade could touch the Red Woman's shadow creatures. I doubt very much that Dalinar would try to take the throne directly though. He's too smart and too loyal to the idea of inheritance for that. I think of anyone he would have allied with Renly and tried to place himself in an advisory capacity (probably Hand of the King). Renly had the best army and unlike EVERYONE ELSE was actually liked by the people. Stannis had the discipline that Dalinar would have respected, but I think he would have seen his refusal to budge on anything as a worrying sign of tyranny that he wouldn't want to support. This is where my question comes in. Could a Kingsguard with a Shardbearer have saved Renly from the shadow? Stannis would have been wiped out on the battlefield that next morning without that strike. If yes, then they would have gone on to slaughter Stannis' armies and beseiged King's landing quite successfully. If not, I think they probably would have gone north to side with Rob and likely ended up slaughtered at the Red Wedding with everyone else important.
  3. It does seem to me like being an ardent is the way to go. You get to basically do whatever you want to pursue your calling while having all your needs met and following none of the usual restrictions on sex or class striations. Technically you are a slave but not really in how you are treated (seemingly usually treated far better than ordinary Darkeyes) or the devoteries will come down on your Lord hard.
  4. No worries Outis. Save your sanity. Speed bubbles are nuts. I had to spend 3 pages of a word doc and go into realmatic theory just to be able to explain system for them for a tabletop game. Dealing with them is literally trying to combine Sanderson Realmatic Theory with 4 dimensional physics. Headaches are certain to ensue.
  5. I remember it said somewhere that the division came from activities that could be performed with one hand, which then evolved into covering the safe-hand. I'll look for the quote, but if someone else can find it first that would be great.
  6. So I was thinking about the division of the masculine and feminine arts as proscribed by Vorin teachings and the division really makes no sense. It is said that the feminine arts are defined mostly by the fact that they can do them with one hand and thus they are seen as more delicate. Well this is not strictly really the case. Ever tried sewing with one hand? It is technically possible but far from practical. And yet that is seen as a feminine art. Music is supposed to be a feminine art and yet most instruments (certainly the harp which I believe is specifically mentioned) require both hands to play effectively. Even consider writing. Think about the process of writing and what you are doing with your left hand. It's there to steady the page. Can't do that too well if your left hand is covered in a giant sleeve, at least not without getting ink everywhere, particularly when writing with a quill. In fact fighting, one thing that is definitely a masculine art, is far more practical to do one-handed than many of the feminine arts, at least for Shardbearers anyway since Shardblades are so light. In examination, this division of doing things one-handed really just doesn't hold up.
  7. I always thought that the main purpose of the atium economy was really one of distraction. If the noble houses are all fighting over who has more atium, then they aren't actually fighting in the streets. It's actually really clever to create a situation where each house can never be sure if another one has more atium and thus all houses are afraid to attack directly just in case. Sure they overcome this every few hundred years and have a house war, but with the established morality of the Final Empire, I'd bet that the atium economy has prevented far more house wars from happening.
  8. I don't think there was necessarily an objective evil. "Destroy Evil" given as an entirely subjective command works perfectly well, if you go with the understanding they had at the time which is that it would not be sentient and that the interpretation would be up to the wielder, not the item itself.
  9. Fair enough. Like I said, it's been a while since I read Emperor's Soul. I couldn't remember specifically if it was "Unforgeable Metal" or "Unforgeable Mineral".
  10. That's an interesting idea, but doesn't seem to be much more than a stab in the dark. Nightblood is a completely different type of creation using a different Investiture system that is notably bad at storing attributes in in metal. Also, we don't know if Nightblood leaks at all when not being actively used even if out of the sheath. EDIT: Terms changed. If people are more comfortable with Host that's fine as long as we're all using the same terms. Also added new term Hemalurgic Construct. EDIT2: @Outis: An interesting and clearly well thought out theory. (space reserved for more in depth analysis of Outis' theory when I'm not at work).
  11. That is the best we can gather from the sparse evidence we have so far on Feruchemical nicrosil, that it can convert between types because in the storage process it stores as a neutral form of Investiture unspecific to any given arcana. However anything involving Feruchemical nicrosil is really still conjecture at this point.
  12. Given that there is not even a hint in legend 300 years later about monsters roaming the countryside, I find it highly unlikely personally.
  13. Wait, is Ralkalest even referred to as a metal? It's been a while since I've read Emperor's Soul, but I seem to remember it being referred to as a stone. I could be wrong though.
  14. While I think it is certainly more likely that this was all done by Inquisitors either as torture or just because they could, I have to say that this seems exactly the kind of unlikely easter egg that Brandon likes to bury. Let us not forget that he had already conceived Stormlight Archive before ever beginning Mistborn, so the presence of a Rosharan element in The Final Empire is quite viable on the development timeline. I'd say this has some potential. Completely unproveable of course, but certainly an interesting idea.
  15. Granted but they always give it to you in Armenian Rubles. I wish to own a printer that never jams and actually works every time I want to print something.
  16. Can you please copy the list of current players again into the summary? Thanks.
  17. Do you have any evidence to back this up or is it just a stab in the dark?
  18. @Outis: Please don't apologize for me in future. I don't mean to insult anyone personally but my points stand quite well. He made an assertion (in a rather rude and assumptive way himself) and I responded in kind. He presented an assertion and I disproved it. That's how a discussion works and doesn't mean that one of us is trying to insult the other. @Pechvarry: I do apologize if you took my post as a personal attack. It was not meant as such. I intended to spiritedly refute your points, not insult you and am sorry for any offence caused.
  19. Well we know that a large portion of it is simple percentage of the object inside. If the signal device is part of a massive network and not solely attached to this bomb, I'd say no it is not. However, if it's sole purpose was to be part of this bomb things get a little less clear. Let's start with the basic premise. If the device is attached by wire rather than remote, is it part of the bomb?
  20. EDIT: Nevermind. Ignore this post. Simple error.
  21. Investiture vs. Investiture is not that simple though. Otherwise every Invested individual would be immune to being affected by the power of any other Invested individual. It's not a simple question of strength either, otherwise Kaladin would never have been able to Lash Szeth who wielded an Honourblade. It also wouldn't stop itself at resisting harmful effects either, Investiture is not in itself intelligent enough for that. By this logic Lightsong would never have been able to heal The God King simply because Susabron held so much more Investiture than him. And the most obvious problem with this idea...it wouldn't let Elantrians affect each other with AonDor normally either while in their normal state since all are roughly equivalent in level of Investiture. Your assertion is absurd and provably false in many ways. While it might have some merit in terms of ITEMS, it is most certainly not the case in terms of people.
  22. It makes sense, it's just not something I ever considered. It would fit given that we know from her talking about breaking out that Ralkalest is a soft metal with a low melting point at least.
  23. Do we have any evidence for this? It's an interesting idea, that aluminum has null properties to other forms of Investiture, not only in relation to Allomancy.
  24. Ah. My mistake. I thought you could not Lurch yourself. Still, my vote holds. The rest of my case is compelling enough for me unless presented with new evidence.
