I find it more of a sleuthy power than a combat power personally. I have been more interested in 'sneaky magic' than 'fighty magic' myself. Likely I am completely off-base with how gold can be used, but a Gold Savant surely would be able to be more precise in which Gold-Shadow is drawn forward. Emperor's Soul shows us that there are many many plausible cognitive-selves to draw from. The lack of use with Gold seems like such cool draw, and I'd love to know what the "unpleasant effects [wob]" of touching a Gold-Shadow are. Thanks for taking the times to theory craft with me though! I appreciate it.

Homeworld of the Ones Above

I for one like the potential of Awakening: "Teleport things" Done and Done. It seems ridiculous, but we do have Oath Gates after all. -
Arrows made of bone whittled into the shape of a bird might be rather effective.

I think gold/electrum/malatium could all be used to tell the future in different ways. As for a gold-savant, seeing how different your potential self is might give you clues to how the future might be. Ex: The next room is potentially dangerous. You decide not to go into the room ahead of you. Then, you burn gold/super-gold to check to see what Room-You's life would be like if only you'd gone into that room - you see yourself in the other room eating chouda and being super happy. Having golded a good result, you go into the room. By checking your potential other self in that room, you know more about the present. This would likely take a lot of practice, but we've never seen anyone really practice using gold to see different time-sensitive versions of themselves. This 'room-checking' reminds me of the Avian Abilities. Obviously the other metals could be used the same way, but I feel gold might give better detail.

So how did people figure out that Zahel was Vasher?

Wait, do we think life sense would allow someone to talk to a Cognitive Shadow like a certain someone in Secret History? -
The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon

I agree that metal isn't invested directly, but there must be more going on: I think they are invested in some sense. Metals glow in the cognitive realm with effect; Ruin was unable to read things etched in metal. Metals have something about them that prevents Ruin and Preservation from reading what is written on them. WOB says Harmony cannot read metal etchings as well. Maybe the potential investiture blinds Ruin and Harmony from seeing metal clearly? Seems odd that a potentiality would have such an effect? What is it about Metal that can channel so much power and can blind a God? Metal also glows the same way humans seem to glow (according to the tale in Secret History). The 2nd Mistborn arc has a character realize that all life has the same 'meatless' one senses when pushing or pulling. So what is it about metal that makes it easier to draw investiture when all matter is potentially useable? Metal must have something. The Gemstones are also not directly invested, but WOB says that different coloured gemstones have different properties because humans see the different colours as "significant". The gemstones themselves don't have any power to change the magic used - it is perception. I am trying to draw a connection between the metals and the gemstones via that route essentially. The Gemstones have no direct power but act as a gateway to allow different abilities to be performed. If writing written on gemstones were not legible to Honour/Cultivation/ETC, id be very inclined to think that they were burnable in some way (with a lot of tinkering) If an Allomancer burns not the Metal but the investiture drawn by the metal, shouldn't an allomancer be potentially able to burn Stormlight in a gem or Sunlight held in Whitesand? I am not saying out would be easy, but it should be possible given enough sciencing. If connection is the issue, then medallions are the answer. -

Well the Allomancer can burn metal because it is invested; a gemstone is also invested and might be burnable as well. If gemstones glinted the same way metal does in the cognitive realm, I bet some weird things could happen. -

What would happen if a full Mistborn attempted to burn a light-infused gemstone? Would the Mistborn be able to feel or use the investiture? Would an Identity Medallion help in any way? -
So we have seen that certain people can remove one's allomantic stores by burning aluminum while touching an allomancer. My question is, could someone boost another person's metals through the same touch-based action? If so, could you daisy-chain this by having a few duralumin listings boosting each other before firing off someone's intended metal? Even if no, medallions might be able to daisy-chain. Uses I am Interested in: Duralimun -> Duralimun -> Electrum/Gold/Malatium = Kelsier got some pretty intense past-visions when he boosted the 11th metal. Knowing what the birds of Sixth of Dusk can do, I think Gold might be a lot more useful than we imagine (assuming someone spent the time necessary to fiddle with it). Touching a Gold Shadow has "unpleasant effects" and I'd love to see what a Gold Shadow might do under a Duralimun post or a Duralimun->Duralimun boost.

We know WOB that burning Aluminum would undue the withering of a shade, but I wonder about burning silver or duralumin and silver? I'd love to see a Mistborn burn Silver (knowing full well it might make them sick) to see how that would affect nearby shades. Mistborn can burn non-allomantic metals though it is dangerous, but maybe those dangers wouldn't be so bad if the body/soul was under attack by a shade. Do it enough and maybe you could be some sort of weird Silver Savant.

Homeworld of the Ones Above

True, but when I read secret history I knew it wouldn't work before the magic was tried... Hmmm. Sorry if I am wrong. I am looking right now haha. The Ire are no clue because they have a very non-standard relationship with the cognitive realm. -

Dont we know that most magics can't be used in the cognitive realm? I will need to actually go find proof of that haha, but I thought minus certain specific powers most magics won't work there. I could be really wrong on that... -

It would be interesting if a form of Cognitive Realm science was invented to. Surely there must be rules that can be exploited to bring forward FTL ships in the cognitive realm. I know magic sort of can't be used, but the Elantrians have figured out a way to at bring extension cords of investiture into the cognitive realm (though they are unique obviously). -
Surely if the Unmade were even a little conscious they'd realize that if Odium wins then Odium will likely have no more need for the unmade. I am hoping the most aware of the Unmade is the traitor looking to extend its own existence. Then that unmade bonds with someone giving us the third bond smith. It is also possible that nigh blood could create a 4th bond smith? Being that he is very invested and is a part of another magic system? But that is just a guess.
-
Oh the child doesn't need to be under Odium's control or in any amount of pain; all Odium has to say is something like "My champion is Shallan's baby" and make that the end of it. The someone like Adolin or Kaladin need to make the call. Who knows what the parents will decided etc etc. But we know a baby will or did hold the fate of the world, and killing it will be/would have been key. Life before death.
-
I still am of the belief that Odium's champion will be an Infant just like the death rattles say. The honourable wouldn't be able to kill it and Odium wouldn't need to lift a finger.

I wonder why the isolated nation Theod seems to lack any natural magic? Perhaps the people haven't discovered how to use the geography to their advantage, or maybe the land isn't invested the same way the continent is because of the mountains that block it off?
-
I do wonder how many of these magics existed before the destruction of Dominion and Devotion, or if all these magics are post Odium.
-
There is one more confirmed magic system - Potion Making. There is a wob stating that the potions used by the priest are magical in nature..

The Reason there are no Awakening Savants.
teknopathetic replied to Calderis's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I read this WOB about two weeks ago and I will try to find it after my lunch, but Brandon mentioned that the planet does have other forms of investiture besides awakening/breath (but that could be something very minor like how the Tears function or something like that). Though this does stand to reason: awakening/the returned are a very new phenomenon. Vasher says that people only started using this system a few centuries ago. It seems like Endowment, or something else, only started letting Awakening start fairly recently in the planet's history. Who knows what Blue Finger's people used for magic 1000 years ago, or what the other continents had/have access too. It would be odd if there were no "old magics" before the arrival of the colonial fleets on the shores of this jungle continent. My personal thought is that Endowment recently decided to invest heavily in her planet in order to fight/prepare for a fight against Odium/Trell. She may have encouraged the five scholars to start thinking of ways to be battle ready as a planet. Her magic system also seems especially built to be used as an off-world ability. Breath also functions very well in other warlike ways; it might allow her people to "continue the fight" in the cognitive realm (expanded souls) with the added benefit that vaccinating her people with breath might be a way to resist something like The Trill (Nathalie people are resistant to sickness etc). Breath also isn't transferable via hemalurgy [wob], so she won't be susceptible to agents of Trell and the like. Just a guess, but Endowment has seen quite a few shards go down; I can't imagine she'd just sit around knowing that Honor and Cultivation and possibly Harmony are nearing the end of their war. Other Possible branches of magic we've seen are: Memory Wiping/Trauma Healing Fortune Telling through observing painting (though this has been described as an ability having a lot of breath will let you do, but that does not prove there aren't other ways of accessing this skill) The Tears and their colour enhancing abilities. We still do not know how/why colour is used when awakening. Seems reasonable colour can be used to other effects. Worldhopping (somehow) Scholarship (being endowed with the ability to discover things. Seems odd NO ONE discovered anything, and then 5 returned suddenly finding everything ever about awakening, world hopping, and the likes (though the Scholars did meet people from Silverlight [WOB]) Shapeshifting (used with divine breath, but still perhaps possible via other means) -
Well First of the Son has a very atrium-y power that can be granted, so it isn't hard to imagine truth watchers or other orders being granted the power. Truthwatchers seem to be able to see the future as their resonance power, since neither surge seems to be very oracle-esq. It would actually be really interesting if Larkens were somehow related to the birds of First of the Sun. The Earth-like creatures don't seem to be native to the planet, and First of the Sun is as good a guess as any for where magic birds may have come from (and been given time to evolve to the Rosharan ecosystem) *Though, First of the Sun is a late book in the series both in conception and in timeline, so maybe this isn't very likely. Personally, I felt that some of the Roshar refugee people are either from Braize or Threnody)

The Reason there are no Awakening Savants.
teknopathetic replied to Calderis's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There is a WOB saying that there are other forms of investiture on Nathalis: I for one think that Vasher's mind-wiping powers (used on that beaten/raped girl) are not something awakening gives you. Those abilities, or abilities like them, might be savantable. -
will everything about taldain be in a graphic novel
teknopathetic replied to jaddeth below's topic in White Sand
I had read the unpublished Whitesand novel and even I had trouble understanding what was going on. I really think each graphic novel should focuse on one character only, but I'm no author so ignore me haha.
