  1. F-Bendalloy Compounding could theoretically negate the need for food and water stores for the crew, if it's in an unSealed form (Im picturing something integrated to the ship itself); all it requires is the metal store, which a) burns at a pretty slow rate and b) can be created whole with other magic systems (which may be available by era4). I believe there is also a WOB (cant find it) that Bendalloy could theoretically be used to "store" waste just like it does food or water, and by era4 there might be some way to convert the resulting investiture into some other useful metal's frequency.
  2. Entirely possible, though sometimes the place that you think is locked down the most is the one you loose sight of. I cant wait to get a look at his side of the curtain, and what's he's really up to...
  3. Right, and the whole point of that part of the WOB is that the organization is loose and semi-autonomous enough that it can attract some far less savory and disciplined when they are outside the radius of his immediate manipulation. He would not be the first or last leader to loose his grip on the office culture when his organization grows and spreads, and as his attention is diverted elsewhere. But Im getting nervous at the direction of this conversation, given we're in the Mistborn section. @vonnegut, where are you in the spoiler-spectrum of the rest of the Cosmere? Would you be open to moving this conversation to a broader, more spoilery section? I dont want to derail your thread, and certainly dont want to spoil anything for you.
  4. Id say that is not guarentee'd if/where he is not directly overseeing things:
  5. Agreed. And given how trace dietary metals were some of Vin's early source, it seems possible that they could burn their "natural" iron reserves in an emergency, at least until anemia sets in. Sort of a magic/Iron equivalent of a starving person's body eating their own muscle mass.
  6. Short version is that you dont need to worry about it too much, people here are very easy-going overall. I dont think anyone is going to bite your head off for asking a question or broaching a topic they've heard before. Worst case Ive seen is people just post a summary list of the similar discussion topics so they dont have to rehash. The policy says necro-posting is frowned upon, but I think that's more to say that you shouldnt feel bad about starting a new thread instead of continuing some long-standing super-thread. Nobody is likely to call you on reviving a necro-thread, and the time I did (jokingly, I swear) the mod's told me to leave it be, and that really old topics get locked anyway. Official response here:
  7. Or Iron, but yes they arent able to see normally and need to burn to see the lines, it's not a permanent/constant effect.
  8. Precisely, anything involving just Unkeyed metalminds is going to be too limited to grant Compounding; one way or another they'd only have half the Hack. UnSealed should do it if you get a matched pair, though the nicrosil eventually runs out so it's not as permanent a solution as Spikes. For example, somebody had spiked F-Aluminum into Miles, he could then produce essentially infinite UnKeyed Gold Metalminds. A Gold Ferring could tap them as if the metalminds were their own to Heal, but could not Compound more. A Gold Misting could Burn them to get LOTS of Healing, and could likely learn to throttle and Flair as other metals, but could not ReStore any of that to Compound and keep the supply going. This implies that cutting the metalmind would not be very viable without additional steps:
  9. If it's UnKeyed it is a metalmind that anyone With the Relevant Ability can access. So for the purposes of Compounding, a kind of specific combination of powers can fill them, but then anyone with the relevant Allomantic ability should be able to burn it and get a burst of the Feruchemical trait. I dont think that last person still needs to be a proper twinborn, since the UnKeyed metalmind has no Identity to restrict it. So for example any Gold Misting should be able to burn an Unkeyed Metalmind and heal. I think.... An UnSealed Metalmind grants you the ability itself, but the other base metal (the Tin or Gold or whatever) is just included in the medallion itself for convenience, and simply holding it gives you the ability to fill other random chunks as metalminds just as any normal Ferring would. So burning a metalmind would work as normal, and burning the metal in the actual coin would be kind of wasteful but might not actually break it functionally.
  10. I think so personally, but it may also depend on what you call Awakening. Breaths can be granted to and stored in an organic host, and this can be living or dead. WOB says that the basic person-to-person transfer of breaths takes a bit of Color from the person to do it, so if that Counts then I would say "Yes". I recall (but cannot find) a WOB that also says Vasher hides his extra Breaths in his own Bones to avoid the obvious signs of Heightening's they would grant, separate from the way he suppresses his Divine Breath. On the other hand, there are fundamental limits to what you can do to yourself because of the innately external element of Endowment. Experiment: I Hypothesize that anything organic that is sufficiently Invested to resist Awakening would also be sufficiently Invested to receive Spiritual Damage from a Shardblade. Thus if it take Two strokes to cut down a living Tree the way it take two cuts to carve into an animal, then Living Plants are very likely to be resistant to Awakening.
  11. Personally I would read the SA shorts and Warbreaker to round of the most obvious Story connections. Mistborn and Elantris are good in their own right so I wouldnt skip them by any means. I would NOT read Arcanum Unbound or Secret History until you finish Mistborn Era 1, there be Spoilers in those waters...
  12. We know per WOB that Honor himself, not the Honorblades, provided a direct source of Stormlight. Now the heralds need to get sources normally via gems, and the Honorblades are far less efficient with their Stormlight usage because the Bond they utilize is weaker/shallower. We have three confirmed effects of the 5th Ideal: their Stormlight Efficiency and Healing Capabilities will both continue to progress as they have with each Ideal, and whatever means the Spren have to forcefully remove the Bond will no longer work. Speculating, I would guess the Squires would get some increase, in abilities, numbers or perhaps range from their Radiant, for Orders that get Squires. Hypothetically the Bond represents the Spren and Radiant literally merging Spiritwebs, so they might get some spren-blending abilities, touching spren like Lift, seeing spren like Rock, etc. Along the same lines I would love to see the Spren get new abilities of their own: maybe they are anchored enough that they can manifest their full Shadesmar form in the Physical Realm, or maybe they get to Reverse-Summon their Radiant into Shadesmar (doubtful but fun). Originally (ie. in the early Prime drafts) each Order had more specific connections to their associated Essence (to the point where each had limited Soulcasting the way each has limited Healing even without Regrowth) so perhaps some aspect of that manifests? I dont see them getting infinite Stormlight for a few of reasons: The spren themselves dont have that and need Stormlight to live so it doesn't make as much realmic sense. It would also give them effectively infinite Healing which gets narrative-breaking real fast. Perfect Storage is very interesting and I would entirely buy it being related to how the Bond can no longer be externally broken, so I do like that option a bunch.
  13. Awesome! Thanks! This is definitely how I experience reading, though I was never sure how typical it was.
  14. Hahah, Dozens and dozens. Everything from unfinished/unstarted stories, unfinished Art or science projects, or both. Everything from novels to fractal wood burning to painting (Bob Ross LIED, takes waaay more than a 1/2 hour) to Lightsabers to singing tesla coils to Fabrial gloves, and so many more Ive probably forgotten about. I even have all the major parts for a garage Fusion Chamber in a box somewhere (Im married now so that one may never come to be...).
  15. I dont think so, Hard to say, on one hand it seems to be a living Spiritweb-related, Consciousness thing. Dalinar was Connect to the Person. On the other hand, the relevant Connection in the Metallic Arts seems more Person-To-homeland and allow the person side to be scaled and/or transferred. But in all cases there is a living Consciousness involved that Knows the Language, and I think that is a key ingredient. I dont think you can get it from an inanimate object because I dont think Inanimate, non-sapient objects are innately Invested enough to have the appropriate sorts of Connection. I think you are more or less piggy-backing the Language region of their Spiritweb via the investiture Connection. That's precisely what Dalinar does. Im guessing it is more or less what Hoid does, so presumably it has similar limitations with idioms and certain concepts (Coin vs Sphere, etc). Correlary is that it's likely the same mechanism that was letting Dalinar speak the Dawnchant out loud while in the Visions. A corollary to that is what would have happened if Dalinar had tried his Language trick to learn to Read? Given how Spoken language and written language are supposedly* a whole different region of the brain, I suspect he would at minimum had needed to Learn A written language first. Now Im curious if he will get Both written and verbal languages with a single Connection action, or if he'll need to consciously Connect to one or the other. *(I say Supposedly because I only know this from Hollywood)
  16. Siri: Spoiled brat who stole her Sister's fiancé, ruining things for everyone. Susebron: Illiterate Man-Child entirely at the power of his caregivers. Tonk Fah: Animal Lover Clod: Walking sex toy
  17. The Trell that is referenced on Scadrial is confirmed to be a Shard, and one of the Nine we knew of at the time, per WOB. Process of elimination the strongest candidate is Autonomy. Whether there is a connection to the mortal of the same name is a topic of on-going speculation. EDIT: My personal favorite Tinfoil Theory is that Trell is some sort of splinter personality or rival Avatar to Sazed, embodying the Discord aspect. I dont think anyone else is convinced though.
  18. I am very much not going to argue with her, for all kinds of reasons
  19. True, though the Dor magics are all wildly different that many other things, mostly from being sourced in the "wrong" realm. Bloodsealing for example has no Spiritual component like other Healing; it's a brute force approach where you have to actually cognitively Know the routing of every nerve, tissue, and blood vessel. The closest correlating example I can think of is Shardblade damage where a Spiritual wound at a given body location has a direct effect on the same body parts, indicating a correlation between the structure and physical Location of the Spiritweb. A bit of a stretch I know, but I would have said the same about metal s and fabrials before RoW
  20. And Im very sure Wyndle will have strong opinions... For a Chair Id go with "likely to break under stress" because a Chair is fundamentally "a thing to Sit on" so it will fail at that task and become two "irregular pieces of wood" with their own beads (presumably the eventual fate of that statute). It was one piece and becomes more likely to become two, in the most literal sense. A Stick would become two Sticks that happen to be stuck together. Maybe, and I do have thoughts about things like plants being observed vs not and it's possible implication on Color in the Cognitive Realm. But we're talking about a Statue vs a Chair, both Intentionally hand-crafted items; they have been conceived & Observed in that process at least.
  21. The middle ground is that it is weakened in the physical realm, as in the chair is now weakened, faulty, and likely to break under stress. I like this over full Nightblood style annihilation because I think he's converting the literal Matter to Investiture and drinking it down (on top of his other realmic damages). Think of it as the opposite of the Statue, where the Cognitive Self lagged behind the physical Damage. Instead of the statue wanting to be whole because it identifies as a single item, we have the chair that wants to be broken because it identifies as the pieces now, even though the Whole is still intact in the Physical Realm.
  22. Chasing that: The beads are the object's Cognitive Aspect, which is what is negotiated with and eventually rewritten in Soulcasting, yes? So what happens when such as thing has a sudden Identity Crisis from external "cognitive" damage?
  23. Fun! This is really two separate and equally fascinating questions: 1) what happens to the physical Object if you manage to damage a Bead? 2) What happens to... Everything else if you dramatically alter the "stone" landscape of Shadesmar? For #1, Do they Pop, or Split? I wonder if that might schism the Conitive Identity of the object. Break that Mansion of Shallan's into two distinct Wings of a Building, or some such? Something that might happen naturally if it were, for example split into a duplex, or the home of a particularly strong feud. On the other hand, we may be underestimating how durably these individual beads are to pop. For #2, the natural landscape that would take damage (rather frictionless flowing beads) is the Water-equivalent. But on the other hand if the coastline were significantly altered/destroyed and the beads flowed in, that could imply a raising of the land in the Physical world to maintain the balance, something Crem could accomplish simply enough.
  24. Closest thing I can think of is is an apparent need for physical contact. But then we've also only seen a very few examples of the power at all and most were the base/amateur level applications, so those effects my be less discriminatingly on the contact point required than your Oathpact-level applications.
  25. Cinematic Superman-style Field effect protecting her clothing? There are some (not many) other examples of field effects, like with Aluminum. On the other hand, I also dont think it's out of the realm of possibility for her to have been blurring the lines between Speed and straight Temporal abilities, given Wax's All is One metal-line epiphany moment. There could be multiple effects being used in concert there subconsciously.
